Jan. 13 league night recap

January 14, 2010

My Week 19 bowling, frame-by-frame (Link to series on BowlSK)

I’ve been making a habit of bowling 600 (this was the 4th week in a row I’ve done so), but last night was more of the consistent variety than the spectacular one. I chalk the night up to 2 things:

  1. A 2&2 move I made on lane 38 after having 2 shots go basically through the nose, and finding something playing that line.
  2. I’ve been applying what I do for my right side spares (keeping the target pin in my peripheral vision, drawing a line from my feet, though my target spot on the lane, and the pin, and trying to keep the ball on that line through the pushaway) to my left side, and I’ve noticed an improvement on that side, as well. In particular, I ran a spare percentage analysis on BowlSK again, and I am now over 50% on the season shooting the single 7 pin, which has been a trouble pin.

Result: 206-189-215=610
Average (57 games): 189
Average for last 9 games: 208
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 575

While I was having a decent night, my teammates weren’t necessarily (except for Carl, who also had 2 games over his average), and our opponents were enough over their average to take all 4 points. I didn’t feel so bad about the sweep, however, when I learned that 2 other teams also lost all of the points to start the second half.

Link to BowlingBallReviews.com changed to BallReviews.com

January 9, 2010

The site, BowlingBallReviews.com, was recently forced to shut down, so, wanting to keep a site with ball reviews done by bowlers in the sidebar, I found BallReviews.com and changed the link formerly pointing to BowlingBallReviews.com to that site. BallReviews.com looks like a pretty good site, so I hope my readers considering a ball purchase will make at least one visit there.

Jan. 9 league standings update (final first-half standings)

January 9, 2010

My team finished tied for 7th place in the first half with “The Wild Samoans” at 34 points apiece (out of a possible 72). “Butz-N-Gutz” won the first-half title comfortably (4 points) over “The Mustangs.” The second half of the season gets underway for us against “The Generations” next week.

A trend through the first half

January 7, 2010

Thanks to the new reports feature of BowlSK, I was able to run an analysis of my spares left and made both all of last season and through the first half of this season, and a trend caught my eye:

Single 10 pin in 2008-09: 51/79 (64.6%)
Single 10 pin through first half of 2009-10: 44/59 (74.6%)

I’m on pace to leave the single 10 pin 118 times by the end of this season, well more than last season, but I am also picking up the pin a greater percentage of the time. Combine this with the fact that I’m getting strikes at a slightly greater rate (46.6% through first half compared to 42.4% last season), and it’s little wonder that my average is 9 pins higher through the first half compared to the same point of the season last year.

Jan. 6 league night recap

My Week 18 bowling, frame-by-frame (Link to series on BowlSK)

The skinny: I hit my AVG+1 yet again, but I was hoping for more after the first game. Splits and washouts mostly did me in, but I missed a makeable spare in each of the last 2 games, as well.

Result: 243-160-198=601
Average (54 games): 189
Average for last 9 games: 210
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 615

The younger Ed Godino was back tonight, and he keyed a net win for his team against us tonight. Judging from the finish of the other matches, I think we ended the first half in 6th place.

I have also joined the virtual league that has been formed on the BowlingFans.com site, and I will be putting up a link in the sidebar to the league page/blog (look for “BowlingCommunity Mixed Virtual League”) in the “Author’s links” category. Tonight was my first night of bowling for the virtual league.

Gaskill defeated Jayme Silva (Wonder Bowl, 200 avg.) in the title match by a score of 197-164 (with handicaps). Westgate Lanes bowlers dominated the top of the prize list, as Brian Egan (213 avg.) and Linwood Cowen, Jr. (180 avg.) also made the semifinals, while Maya Christie (120 avg.) was also in the final 8. Gaskill, in addition to collecting the $5,000 first place prize, won the tournament director’s strike jackpot in the Saturday squad (for $500), as did Bill Major in the first Sunday squad (for $1,000).
