Sept. 29 league night recap

September 29, 2010

My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame (Link is to series sheet on BowlSK)

We ended up bowling for forfeit points tonight, so my gutter ball in the 3rd frame of Game 2 had a lighthearted feel to it. I had hoped to make the spare after that, but couldn’t carry the 10. Overall, though, I think the forfeit situation allowed me to relax, and it showed in my consistency: this is the closest I’ve ever been to a triplicate (one pin over a 224 triplicate), and this is the first time I’ve been over 220 in all three games of a series. :D

Result: 224-225-224=673
Average (12 games): 198
Average for last 9 games: 212
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 600

As well as I’ve been bowling, I didn’t need much help to take forfeit points, and we were over our team average in all three games tonight (forfeit rule is that a team must bowl within 50 pins of their average to win points by forfeit). Carl gave me good support tonight, as he had all three games over average, and John and Eileen had over-average totals, as well.

Links to league secretary application homepages added to sidebar

September 29, 2010

As an assist to future league secretaries, I thought I’d add the links to the homepages of the two best-known league secretary applications, BLS and Perfect Secretary, to the sidebar. BLS may be more familiar to the average bowler because standings sheets generated by that application can be uploaded to the well-known LeagueSecretary.com site. However, my virtual league procured Perfect Secretary for my use, and I generally found favor with it; if a league doesn’t want to upload to LeagueSecretary.com and is satisified with uploading standings to Bowl.com, I would definitely recommend Perfect Secretary, but this shouldn’t be taken as though I think BLS isn’t good…Shawn uses it and is very happy with it. I included both so league secretaries in need of software can visit both sites to compare price and features and make an informed decision. :D

Trey Coy achieves perfection in Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen

September 29, 2010

I got my first look at the standings for the Tuesday Scratch Sportmen league today, and I noted that Trey Coy posted a 300 game in the early going. I’ll comment when I find out what lane condition the league is starting on. Still, congrats Trey! :D

Sept. 28 league standings update

September 28, 2010

Posting this pretty late, because the updated standings weren’t posted until tonight…

“Babe And Balls” is now tied with “Vakanczz” (three-fifths of the league champions of two seasons ago) in points for the league lead, though my team holds the pinfall tiebreaker. “Creative Threads” are tomorrow night’s opponents…I see that they’ve been wearing almost matching bowling shirts (the team’s captain wears a differently-styled shirt of the same color scheme), so I’m probably going to wear my tournament shirt (just to show off :D ).

As for the week’s individual honors, I had the high scratch game and series for the men this week, of course, and it wasn’t even close, with Ed Godino Jr. having the second high scratch game with a 247, and Shawn Coles posting a 635 for the second high scratch series. Eileen broke a 200 game and 600 series with her share of our team’s handicap, good for the women’s second high handicap game and series.

Also, the internal (to the league…the Bowler Express standings are done by Westgate Lanes) standings sheet is now up on LeagueSecretary.com, so the link to that will be going back up in the sidebar, and the summer links taken down. The summer BowlingTracker.com stat sheet will also be archived on that site.

Fall 2010 Week 3 virtual league results

September 27, 2010

Despite my big night and good back-up from my chat buddy, “Dennis Michael,” “5 Blind Squirrels” only managed to take two (out of seven) points from “Five Fingers of Death” last week, and we now stand next to last in the standings, four points ahead of Team 7. “Furious Five” continues to lead the league by a point over “AAA.”

Cross-training #162

September 27, 2010

Atlanta Hawks forward Marvin Williams recently told the Journal-Constitution that he played host for a bowling event (the word local was used, but I couldn’t determine if he meant Atlanta or Chapel Hill, NC, where he spends his off-season) for Special Olympics, which he’s been a volunteer for since his sophomore year in high school.

Award notes

September 24, 2010

I was notified by Shawn through Facebook today that my performance the other night qualified for both a 275 game award and a 700 series award from the USBC, and I will be receiving these, as well as a 225 game award for last week’s 247 game (USBC awards go by current average rather than entering average early on, and my current average was fairly low because of my early struggles in the season.), at the league banquet next May. I also told Shawn that I was expecting a code to access an online certificate for 100 over average, but it turned out that the award certificates on Bowl.com don’t need any special codes, and all I needed to do was supply the website with the information (mostly my name and the date I bowled my 100 over average game) and it would create the certificate, which I not only downloaded (as a PDF file) and backed up to my thumb drive, but also printed it out and taped it to the wall near my dining area. I hope the next award I qualify for is in the honor category.

EDIT: As administrivia, the “About” page has been edited to reflect the dual accomplishment.

My first (real) 700 series!

September 23, 2010

And almost had my first honor score in the same night! I had hoped to make this a BowlSpace exclusive, but they changed the blog feature there so that new posts require moderator approval (likely an anti-spam measure), and I didn’t want to keep my regular blog readers waiting too long for this. I’ve expanded on what I wrote on BowlSpace, however, so consider this a treat. :D

My Week 3 bowling, frame-by-frame (Links to series sheet on BowlSK)

The night started innocently enough, and it looked early on like my run of bad games would continue, but I had four in a row in the middle of the game after moving inside; however, I limped home with a couple of splits late for a 174. I felt on the second ball of the 10th frame that I was losing my feel for my timing while trying to concentrate on being good with it, and that caused a “Big 4,” I thought.

I bore down on my concentration on my timing after that end, however, and it paid off, as I ran off the next ten in a row to start the second game. I actually thought I had my nerves under control on the 11th shot, but my heart was still racing, and I couldn’t completely keep from throwing the shot a bit fast, and left a wide 2-7 as a result. I converted the split for a 288, 20 pins better than my previous personal best game. It took me nearly 20 years to improve on that 268, but keep in mind the length of time that I had been away from bowling, as well.

I still needed a strong game for my first 700 series, however, and I calmed down enough after my honor score threat to throw four of the first five strikes. A miss of a single 10 gave me pause, but I didn’t panic, as I continued to throw well, and came up in the 10th needing the first two strikes to virtually cinch 700. The first shot in the 10th was light, but I got one of those “mixer” type strikes that I like. I then flushed the second shot, meaning I only needed to keep it on the lane for my goal, and I threw another good shot, but left a blow-out 7 for a 245 final game and a 707 series. :D

After the 288, and again at the end of the night, I made it a point to thank Tony Attardo, who brought up the timing issue the other morning, and I also received congratulations from my other friends in both Wednesday night leagues, as well as Ray, who was in the pro shop last night. I certainly hope this isn’t the only 700 I ever throw.

Result: 174-288-245=707
Average (9 games): 190
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 580

As for the team, John and Eileen backed up my 288 by both being over average themselves, and they continued that in the third game, as well. Our opponents had one bowler who was averaging in, so looking at the recap and estimating the result using the “over average” method, I think we took the last two games and total.

Rai Doblmeier wins Brockton Bowling Association 2010 Bowler of the Year

September 20, 2010

As reported by the Brockton Bowling Association, Rai Doblmeier became the 10th Bowler of the Year after defeating Pat Carrara 208-185 in come-from-behind fashion in the title match. Doblmeier was the first Bowler of the Year winner to win three matches in the stepladder final round, first besting Steve Huntress 247-176, then defending champion Ryan Yelle 223-216 in the semifinal match. The other cashers were Sean Richard, Harry Thibeault Jr., Dan Esdale, and Keith Tantillo.

Sept. 20 practice

September 20, 2010

My practice routine has had to change, as bowling on Monday is no longer half-price from opening to 5 PM. It has been replaced with a $2.25/game weekday morning rate (before 1 PM), so, though I’ll continue to bowl on Mondays, it will be in the morning, with me catching the 10 AM bus up.

Tony (Attardo) was finishing up his practice when I started, and he happened to pick up on a timing issue: I was getting the ball into its swing too late, causing me to drop it behind the foul line at release. The rest of the practice concentrated on me starting the ball on my third step. When my timing felt good, I generally had better shots, as it turned out, and I picked up a four-bagger by the end of it. Of course, I hope the session carries over into Wednesday night.

Fall 2010 Week 2 virtual league results

September 20, 2010

News for my virtual team was better last week, as we took our first points of the season, grabbing five from “AAA,” and it was enough to move up a spot to 6th in the standings. “Furious Five” holds a three-point lead on “4 + sk8 = #1,” the latter team which was paced by my chat buddy “sk8shorty01,” who submitted the Bowling Community league’s first-ever 800 series with an 802. The team also set the 5-man team scratch game and series records.

Mike Monteiga throws first 300 game of 2010-11 season

September 19, 2010

Congrats to Mike Monteiga, who posted the first 300 game at Westgate Lanes this season Tuesday night in the Brockton Ten Pin league. The honor score helped him to a 733 series. :D

Sept. 19 league standings update

September 19, 2010

To my surprise, “Babe And Balls” only lost one point last week, and we now stand in first place by a half-point over “The Incredibowls.” Eileen seemed to be our top performer, as she had the women’s high game with handicap in the league this week. “Bowling Stones,” a team that includes a neighbor of John and Eileen’s who returned to the league (he was on “Double D” last season), are our opponents this week.

A friendly rendezvous

September 19, 2010

I alluded to the fact that I had a previous engagement in my last post, and that was a meeting of the Massachusetts Imperial Syndicate, a chapter of the international Star Wars fan club called FanForce, which was held at Pinz in Milford. The place was picked because it was close to a friend I’ll call Chris, who is one of the co-chapter representatives, but I knew the place wasn’t USBC-certified, so I didn’t want to risk bringing my “good” equipment. I did bring my shoes, though; Sean Richard told me I may not be able to use my own shoes, but brought them anyway, and was, happily for me, notified that I could. One of Chris’ friends, Jim, brought his own balls, but did admit that the last time he used them was the last time he was at this establishment, which was a year or more ago.

We rented a lane for an hour, and we managed to complete one game, with me throwing a game in the 160s with a 12 lb. house ball and a conventional grip. Even though I was trying to throw it like I normally throw my own balls, I couldn’t hook it much, and the best line for me was a more direct line. I had a double in that first game, but then lightened up and struggled (I even tried to throw thumbless at one point, which met with ill success.) My best friend Ed, who accompanied me, surprised me by getting a double in the incomplete second game. I knew Jim was a league bowler himself at one time, and it showed in his form, but he was actually hooking it too much and may have been experiencing some fit issues, as well.

Most of the time afterward was spent talking about an annual convention that is coming up, and our group usually does a collectibles raffle for some charity at the event, so I made sure to bring my donations with me. I don’t know if I’ll be able to attend this year’s event, but I wished the group well with this year’s effort, and told them I would join them if able. As a parting word, I suggested North Bowl in North Attleboro for the next bowling meet, as it’s pretty much between most of the people that made it to Pinz today.

“Bowler of the Year” note

September 17, 2010

The Brockton Bowling Association’s annual “Bowler of the Year” tournament is scheduled for this Sunday at Westgate Lanes. As I have to miss it due to a previous engagement (which I’ll write about later), I’ll post a recap once the details are up on the association’s website (which will, as always, include a link to the article).

Sept. 15 league night recap

September 15, 2010

My Week 2 bowling, frame-by-frame (Link is to series sheet on BowlSK)

There’s a disturbing trend two weeks in: I’ll have one good game, and two pretty ugly ones. Tonight, it was too many single-pin misses in the first game, and not being able to make the 3-6 for the life of me all night. I’m having the feeling a coaching session with Ray is in order to get my consistency back.

Result: 143-247-140=530
Average (6 games): 167
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 507

We took on a team of new bowlers tonight (including a couple of bowlers that joined the league tonight), and the difference in handicap was too much for us to overcome even despite my 247 second game, so the team lost all four points tonight. Patrick was pretty consistent all night, and Eileen threw in a 165 first game.

Sept. 15 league standings update

September 15, 2010

“Babe and Balls” was one of three teams that took all four points on the first night, along with “Bowling Stones” (a team with a couple of newcomers to the league) and “Butz N Gutz” (the Coles’ team, with Liz and Mike DiBenedetto joining them). My team was third in pinfall, with the other two teams listed in their pinfall order. My team faces “After Thoughts,” another new team, tonight, although I’m not sure about the lane assignment, as it seems to be in conflict with the Westgate Mixed League, which is using 41 & 42 this year. As the “administrivia” for this post, the link to the Brunswick Mixed League standings will be added back to its usual place in the “Author’s links” list in the sidebar.

Cross-training #161

September 15, 2010

The Chicago Bears noted that wide receiver Devin Aromashodu hosted a “Stars and Strikes” charity tournament Monday night at the Pinstripes bowling lounge in Northbrook, Ill. Proceeds will be used to take 25 children from the Chicago Housing Authority on a shopping spree at a local Target store.

Fall 2010 virtual league results, Week 1

September 14, 2010

Unlike my real team, my virtual team struggled and failed to take points against “Furious Five,” who share the lead in points with “AAA” after Week 1. A chat buddy of mine, “sk8shorty01,” had the high game of the week, submitting a 298.

Link addition note: I’ve been putting it off, but the stat sheet for the new Brunswick Mixed season is now in the sidebar list under “Author’s links.”

Sept. 13 practice

September 13, 2010

As I seemed to be having trouble handling transition last week in league, today I did a little drill I made up that simulated a whole night. First game, I used my baseline 30/10 shot, 2nd game I moved in to 33 looking around 11 or 12, and the third game was a move in to 36 looking around 13. It actually seemed I got better as I moved in, as I struggled with a 151 first game, but then had a 210 second game and a 220 third game (each of the latter two with only one open frame). I also got my spare game with my repolished spare ball figured out, and that also improved with each game. Now I just hope this carries into Wednesday night. :D
