2012-13 mid-season round-up

With the New Year, I devote the usual post to the high scores for both the men and women at Westgate Lanes during the season in-progress at the unofficial halfway point of the winter season. It will be based on the league standings sheets I have available at press time. High average will be for a minimum of 36 games, and youth bowlers will be included with the adult bowlers if they otherwise qualified.

Dec. 30 league standings update

After managing just a point from “WTF!!!”, “Spare Parts” were in a tie for 9th with that team and “Angry Birds.” “The Incredibowls” will be our position week opponents, with a finish of no worse than 13th assured, and a finish of 8th possible. “Dee’s Boys III” just need to win one point from “Sweet Rolls” to secure the roll-off position, with the latter team needing to sweep to force a one-game roll-off for the first half title.

Dec. 26 league night recap

My Week 17 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I had been sick the last few days, so I was unsure until this afternoon that I’d be bowling, but my fever did break, so I felt I could give it a go, and ended up doing enough to raise my average. Even with that, the only spare I seemed to be lined up for was my single 10, and that only after missing the first two and making an adjustment with the next one I left.

Result: 212-163-183=558
Average (51 games): 176
Average for last 9 games: 183
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 558

Team took the first game, but then we got stomped on in the other two.

Dec. 25 league standings update

Yes, a meaningful post on Christmas Day.

After taking a point from “Kickin Ass,” “Spare Parts” are in a tie for 8th place with “The Mustangs,” with this week’s opponents, “WTF!!!”, two points behind. With just a week left until the position round for the first half, “Dee’s Boys III” lead “Deadwood,” “Sweet Rolls,” and “Heavy Metal” by seven points and will only have to win one point in the last two weeks to qualify for the roll-off without help from other teams.

Merry Christmas everyone! 😀

A ball to “Marvel” at

I recently re-evaluated my arsenal, after learning about technical details of the core like RG and differential, and noticed that a hole in my arsenal was a stronger pearl. I addressed the hole (with the ball being acquired tonight) by having Ray order me a Marvel Pearl. The new IQ Tour Pearl was under consideration too, but I wanted something I could use on a heavier volume house shot and have the reaction of my weaker balls. With that in mind, I considered the layout options and, liking the layout of my Fast, decided to put the pin in my ring finger.

Trying the ball out, I found I could cross a lot of boards with it, but it was pretty much as expected. There may not have been as much oil as I wanted, but it allowed me to also work, during the one free game I got, on playing inside third arrow while targeting further down the lane. On my good shots, I left a couple of flat 10s, but also had a couple of solid strikes, so I am now more confident I can move more inside when I need to.

My Week 16 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I thought back to a previous lesson with Ray, and thought my release would improve if I targeted further down the lane than the arrows, and it largely helped. I left no splits, but my spare game was still “meh,” although a bright spot was making three of four single 10 pins.

Result: 225-163-172=560
Average (48 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 181
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 534

Tenth frame heroics by me again won my team a point (first game), but that would be all my team would take on the night.

December 2012 People’s Tournament results

On Dec. 8 & 9, The People’s Tournament held their biggest event ever, with a $32,000 guaranteed prize fund and $10,000 guaranteed to the champion, at Westgate Lanes, and had a tournament record 312 entries. The TPT reported Daniel Nazzaro (Town Line Ten Pin, 174 avg.) as taking home the top prize, having defeated Jason Breeden (Strikers East [NH], 184 avg.) by a score (with handicaps) of 234-203. The TPT reported the Westgate Lanes cashers being Jim Ferguson (5th, 204 avg.), John Jemison (19th, 190 avg.), Terrance Williams (20th, 185 avg.), Hans Cheung (23rd, 182 avg.), Rich LeCain (25th, 210 avg.), Danny Khuu (26th, 218 avg.), Eric Durden (29th, 177 avg.), Ying Mok (30th, 170 avg.), Josh Skuby (31st, 170 avg.) and Scott Wolkovich (32nd, 204 avg.).

Co-champions declared in Fall 2012 virtual league

Because a technical error in one bowler’s score submission was discovered, and the bowler’s scores as he posted in the forums would have resulted in different champions had I received them, I declared “Cold Turkey” co-champions of the Fall 2012 virtual league. Congrats to users “BOSStull,” “dgordon0408,” “Russ I.,” and “slaterracing”.

Dec. 12 league night recap

My Week 15 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Most of the spares I missed tonight were again on the left side, but I feel I’m starting to get that side figured out, as I had reasonable spare game games in the first and third games while leaving mostly spares on that side.

Result: 196-154-186=536
Average (45 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 177
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 566

We ran into another hot team, but they gave me a chance to steal the third game, and, perfectly capable of doing so, I did with the XX9 in the 10th.

Dec. 10 league standings update

“Spare Parts” fell to a tie for 6th after failing to take points from “Dee’s Boys III,” sharing the position with “The Mustangs,” “There’s 3 and 2,” and “The 5 G’s.” The 6th place tie is nine points behind “Dee’s Boys III,” who lead “Split Happens” by four points. My team bowls against “Heavy Metal” this week, which will be our “Christmas Bowl” week (same deal as the Thanksgiving “Turkey Shoot,” with a prize for the bowler who is the most over his/her average in each division).

Fall 2012 Week 12 virtual league results (with final standings)

“Fantastic 4” picked up a net win over Team 2, but the 4-3 result was not enough to move up in the standings, so my team ended in 4th place, seven points behind the champions, “Front 9”; congratulations to team members “Chuck,” “ijohn83” (who is now a two-time champion), “Rocket” (the father of one of my teammates this season), and “sk8shorty01” (a long-standing forum and chat buddy). 😀

Dec. 5 league night recap

My Week 14 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

On a night I thought I bowled worse than I did, Brian Egan (who I believe was seeing me bowl for the first time) told me he thought I was throwing the ball well and just getting bad breaks. Maybe I’m just too hard on myself. 😀

Result: 197-173-167=537
Average (42 games): 174
Average for last 9 games: 171
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 529

The aforementioned Brian Egan threw a 781 at us tonight, and was the biggest part of his team’s sweep. To be fair, though, I could have had a strike or two in the 10th third game and probably won; that didn’t happen.

Fall 2012 Week 11 virtual league results

“Fantastic 4” took five of seven from “Schnitzengiggles,” but with “Cold Turkey” and “Front 9” sweeping their matches, we couldn’t move closer to the lead, and the latter two teams remain tied for the lead and will bowl against each other this week. The championship is also possible for Team 2, but they would have to sweep us and have a team go 4-3 for a share, and the points split 3.5 each to win outright (I would declare co-champions if there’s a tie for the championship.). A second place finish is possible for us if we sweep and one of the teams in first place win six or seven. We are 4 points ahead of the teams in 5th and 6th, so a finish of no worse than 5th is guaranteed for us.

We had two of the four high individual games of the week in the third game, including a 299 from “Rocket Jr,” but our team game was only the third highest team game of the week; I want to think a record team game was out there for us.

Jimmy Fund note: The monthly fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund will take place this Thursday, with registration at the usual 6:30 PM time.

Dec. 2 league standings update

After losing all four points, “Spare Parts” fell to 4th place, five points behind “Dee’s Boys III,” who lead both “Sweet Rolls” and “Split Happens” by four points. My team has a chance to close ground on the lead, as we have “Dee’s Boys III” as opponents in the coming week.

Virtual league note: The virtual league was given Thanksgiving week “off,” so scoring in that league resumed this week. I will have the usual results post tomorrow.

Tri-City tournament note: The Tri-City Women’s Bowling Association’s city tournament scheduled for this weekend at Westgate Lanes was canceled.
