July 30 league night recap

My Week 11 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I was very happy with tonight’s set: No letdown in the third game, and, indeed, only one open frame after the first game (on a split in the third game, which I actually came close to making).

Result: 188-202-196=586
Average (33 games): 176
Average for last 9 games: 183
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 533

Team won the first two games, then the elder Ralph Marple put up a 267 to help his team take the third game by enough for total and a 4-4 split. Teams 1 and 5 each won six, so we’re now tied with Team 1 for first with Team 5 six points behind in third.

July 23 league night recap

My Week 10 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Lou spotted a probable flaw in my form in the third game, suggesting I try to stay lower at the foul line. I kept that in mind, and made some better shots after he told me, but had some bad breaks on stone 7s. I’ve had much better nights on my single pins, as well, mostly butchering my 10, but missing a couple of others, as well.

Result: 187-180-150=517
Average (30 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 177
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 555

Team took it on the chin, losing all eight, but Team 5 also lost all eight. Team 1 did win all eight, so our lead is two points over Team 1. The next standings update, if needed, will note other teams moving near the lead after tonight.

Long-time BBA manager Robert J. Young dead at 72

The Brockton Bowling Association has already announced it on our Facebook page, but I decided to wait on the Enterprise posting to note here the passing Sunday of association Hall of Famer, and long-time secretary and manager for the association, Robert J. “Bob” Young. Among his many bowling accomplishments, he was notably the first bowler with a perfect 300 game at Westgate Lanes (and in the association), as well as, as his bio page on the association website shows, the first 200 average in the association. Also, in addition to his duties in the local association, Bob was manager of the Massachusetts state association.

I need to say that it was Bob who recommended me for the board after I came forward with the offer to start the Facebook page, and all I’ll say is that I hope to continue to serve the association with the same dedication Bob showed.

Link to Bay State Open added to sidebar

I got wind of a new tournament, called the Bay State Open, on Facebook, and, now that I know that they have a website, I threw the link to it on the sidebar under the “Local/New England” links category. Zach Thompson, the tournament director, was bowling in the Coke league toward the tail end of last season, so I want to wish him the best in this endeavor. 🙂

EDIT: Zach told me they’ve booked Westgate for Oct. 18, so that date has been placed on the calendar.

Stephen Major posts top 100 finish in Junior Gold Survivor

There are plenty of side events at the Junior Gold national tournament, and one of those was a “Survivor” tournament for those who did not make the first cut. As evidenced here, Stephen Major placed 93rd out of 585 boys in the Survivor tournament, which, I’m told, is good enough for not only scholarship money, but also a paid entry into next year’s Junior Gold tournament, to be held in Chicago. WTG Stephen! 😀

July 18 league standings update

After winning six points from “Lucky Thirteens”, “It’s Jim’s Fault” now leads Team 5 by eight points and Team 1 by ten. Team 2 are our opponents next week.

Individually, Jim had the high scratch game (245, tied with Tony Attardo and Don Nelson) and series (716) for the men last week. As a team, we had the second high scratch series.

Kevin Thibeault makes first cut at 2014 Junior Gold

According to the posted standings after qualifying on Bowl.com, Kevin Thibeault, as he did last year, has made the first cut (in 137th position) in the under-20 boys division at the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships this week in Buffalo, NY. I will list the other New England bowlers who made the cut in the tournament, by division, below:

U20 boys

Bryan Bourget (Woonsocket, RI)
Tyler Perry (New Bedford, MA)
Qwadaris Rembert (Providence, RI)

U20 girls

Jadee Scott-Jones (E. Providence, RI)

U15 boys

Nicholas Flake (Pomfret Ctr., CT)
Tom Hankey (Great Barrington, MA)

U15 girls

Jewel Dumond (Pawtucket, RI)

U12 girls

Madison Gentes (Manchester, NH)

Congrats to everyone, and good luck & good bowling the rest of the way! 😀

July 16 league night recap

My Week 9 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

The takeaway tonight was the third game, with the turkey in the middle helping me avoid the letdown I’ve been having in that game recently. I could not get lined up on my single 7 until the third game, or this could have been better.

Result: 194-178-179=551
Average (27 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 180
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 544

Mirroring the team’s recent trend, we lost the first game, then won the other two and total comfortably. The teams immediately in back of us all had bad nights, as well, so we probably widened our lead.

July 11 league standings update

As we expected, “It’s Jim’s Fault” moved back in front of Team 5 by two points, with Team 1, who was bowling against Team 5 this week, eight points behind us in third. “Lucky Thirteens” will be our opponents next week, and they are 11 points behind us.

Individually, Jim, with a 688, had the high scratch series this week.

Congrats to all of the women’s state champions! 😀

2014 Mass. state open tournament results

The open state tournament results posted on the website of the Greater Lowell Bowling Association are still in an unofficial state, but I’ve received word that checks from the tournament have been sent out, and I will try to deduce the state champions from the posted unofficial results, with the champions given below (champions with Brockton Bowling Association bowlers involved will be noted with an *):

Handicap

Team: Kash Krew I* (4,024)

July 9 league night recap

My Week 8 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Always a bad one in the bunch, it seems, and, lately, the bad one has been third game.

Result: 202-186-145=533
Average (24 games): 174
Average for last 9 games: 180
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 540

Team won first two games and total again; we had a view of the first place team’s match, and, as near as we could tell, they only won two points, so tonight should have put us back in the lead by two.

Arsenal GIF updated

Just a quick note…I have updated the GIF with my arsenal to include the IQ Tour Fusion, and dropped the Hy-Road from the rotation. The latter ball may come out of “retirement” down the line, but I’m studying my options with the surface (I had noted a loss of back-end motion even after its latest cleaning and polishing.).

7th anniversary post

This post is coming a few days after the day I usually do it on (June 30, the day of the bowling outing with my brother that started my comeback to competitive bowling), but, where my first post to this blog was on a July 4, it falls within the “in time” range for my anniversary posts.

All I really want to say this year is that I continue to be blessed with the bowling events I get to post about here, including a couple of state records (Tyler Perry’s youth record, and Jim Lovewell’s adult state record), a couple of records in the state tournament (the singles record, and the doubles record falling twice in one weekend), and, certainly not least, Ed Roberts and Alex Aguiar’s 600 doubles game in my city tournament in April.

Thank you to the usual, and I hope to be able to make an announcement here within the next week or two.

July 2 league night recap

My Week 7 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Third game had a “woulda, coulda, shoulda” feel to it, b/c it was possibly in the 180s with better spare shooting, but I’ll take the high game of the summer so far, the second game.

Result: 184-216-141=541
Average (21 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 189
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 524

Team won first two games, but then had to hang on for total by three pins, with Jim needing, and getting, two strikes in the 10th third game to save total.
