My day at the People’s Tournament, Jan. 31

My qualification attempt, frame-by-frame (Link to series on BowlSK)

My own comment to the series pretty much sums it up. I had never seen the “Dead Man’s Curve” prior to today, but I felt I threw a few decent shots on it, especially in the second game. More importantly, however, I didn’t give anything away with single-pin misses…it was when I left more than one pin standing on the deck that I ran into trouble, especially with 5 splits (one, a 3-10 in the 10th frame of Game 3, made) and a couple of washouts. All-in-all, if I could be happy shooting in the 490s, today would be one of those days.

Edit to last 2 league series made: As Harry Thibeault, Jr. told me that it was “Main Street” now out on Wednesday nights, I have edited the last 2 league series on BowlSK to reflect the new oil pattern.

The payoff

My brother and I had our first bowling outing of the new year today, which I used to try out some things on the new house shot. What made today’s outing particularly satisfying, however, was something that happened in the 2nd frame of our last game. I left a 6-7 in the frame, after which my brother said, “I’ll give you $20 if you make this.” I told him, “You’re on!”…and proceeded to convert the split, whereupon my brother dug a couple of ten-dollar bills out of his wallet to pay up. The extra cash came at a good time, as I wanted to take down the surface of my Hy-Road in preparation for the tournament tomorrow, and part of it will also pay for side pots tomorrow when I bowl.

Virtual league results, Week 3

“Size 11’s,” my team, could only take 2/7 points from “4 Marksmen,” but we remain in a tie in points for 4th with “Fantastic Four,” and “4 Marksmen” now hold a two-point lead over “Drunken Masters.” Please note that averages for those bowlers with 9 games were recalculated, and the new averages seemed to be included in the handicap calculations.

Individually, “Russ I.” had a 300 game in the league he submits his scores from last week, so congratulations to him. 😀

My Week 21 bowling, frame-by-frame (Link to series on BowlSK)

I thought I played better tonight, at least to start, but it’s clear that more practice on the modified shot is in order. Transition usually forces me to move more inside, but with only one other real hook bowler on the right side, I had to move outside because of carry-down. A problem with the scorer in the third game also broke everyone’s rhythm because it forced a move to a different pair, though I found something on the new pair to salvage a 157.

Result: 201-168-157=526
Average (63 games): 188
Average for last 9 games: 188
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 583

Team only managed to take one point again, as none of us were very consistent.

Jan. 25 practice

Today, I had my (becoming) usual pre-tournament practice session with Rob, but, as is unusual, I decided not to take practice on the tough shot and instead focused on getting my house shot game in order with the recent change to the shot. I concentrated on playing a tighter inside line with the Hy-Road, but was having mixed results, mostly due to not having my speed control “down” on the line yet. Rob, for his part, had a third game in the 250s, but he plays more down-and-in than I do, so he may have had a better “look” at the pocket than me.

Tournament note: The annual Brockton, Foxvale, and Tri-City mixed doubles tournament is scheduled for Feb. 27 and 28 at Westgate Lanes. Entries close on Feb. 11.

Jan. 24 league standings update

My team may have only taken one point last week, but it was enough to stay out of the basement, as another team got swept for a second week in a row to start the second half. “The Dynasty” and “The Generations” have each taken 8 points to start the second half. My team faces the team immediately ahead of us, “The Wild Samoans,” this week.

Individually, Ed Godino III was the star last week, as he had a 276 game and a 728 set, both high on the week, and the 276 game is the second-best in the league this season.

Ohio bowler rolls perfect game after accident claims part of bowling hand

This is one of those inspirational bowling stories I like to post to this blog…

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer

Mike Sirna, 51, of Bedford, OH, lost two fingers and much of his bowling hand in a work accident involving a five-ton steel drum roller, but rolled a perfect game at Pawnee Lanes on December 27, which was only the second 300 at the center since Labor Day. He used a ball fitted to his thumb and his two remaining fingers.

Cross-training #125

The Pittsburgh Penguins Wives Association held their second annual “Pens and Pins” fundraiser for the Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia Make-A-Wish Foundation last night at the Crafton-Ingram Bowling Lanes. 85 Make-A-Wish donors and 11 Make-A-Wish children bowled alongside Penguins players at the event, which raised about $35K. The page linked above has a link to video of the event, any you may view a photo gallery from the event here.

Meet “The Flintstones”

Knowing we might get out early tonight, I decided to bring my camera for the now-tradtional team photo, so, without further ado…

The Flintstones
L-R: John Ruhl, Eileen Ruhl, Richie, Carl Benson, Patrick Padula

My readers will be familiar with Carl and Patrick, but you may now put faces to John and Eileen. The photo will be copied to the scrapbook page, as always.

My Week 20 bowling, frame-by-frame (Link to BowlSK)

As I note in the BowlSK comment, I was told after bowling tonight that the “High Street” pattern was modified by shortening it 2′, and the change caught me somewhat by surprise during warm-ups, as I noted my Hy-Road was useless and I had to switch to my High Voltage. I thought I was coping with it OK, but the shorter oil pattern length also had an effect on my spare game, as even my plastic ball hooked in the shorter oil. As a result, I missed more spares than I’ve been accustomed to recently.

Result: 193-169-178=540
Average (60 games): 189
Average for last 9 games: 194
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 605

Team took only one point (first game), even with Bobby Geddes absent, as our performances were spotty.

Virtual league results, Week 2

Things did look brighter in my virtual league, however, as my virtual team once again took 5 of 7, this time against a “real” team, Team 9, which included “General Pounder,” one of my friends from the BowlingFans.com chat. Two weeks in, the “Size 11’s” are tied in points for third place with “Drunken Masters,” two of the members of whom are “MikeHL” and “lmfcoa,” two newer chat buddies of mine. “4 Marksmen” and “Fantastic Four” are the two teams at the top of the current virtual league standings, both having only lost 2 points each after two weeks.

Jan. 18 league standings update

As I mentioned in the most recent league night recap, my team was one of three that failed to take points to open the second half, and the three teams that executed the sweeps could be considered “usual suspects”: “The Dynasty,” “The Generations,” and “The Mustangs.” The round-robin starts all over again this week with my team facing “VAKINC.”

Virtual league update, Week 1

According to the BC Mixed Virtual League blog (linked in the sidebar, click header to go to home page if you’re viewing the individual article), my team (named “Size 11’s”) took 5 of 7 points in the first week of a 12-week season against the “Bye” vacant team (under the rules of the league, a team must bowl its average or better to take points against the bye team). As a result, the early going finds us in a three-way tie for 3rd place. From the BowlingCommunity.com forums, I have two “real” teammates, “leftykev” from Spokane, WA, and “Don_Ebarb” from California, along with a 187 vacant score.

My Week 19 bowling, frame-by-frame (Link to series on BowlSK)

I’ve been making a habit of bowling 600 (this was the 4th week in a row I’ve done so), but last night was more of the consistent variety than the spectacular one. I chalk the night up to 2 things:

  1. A 2&2 move I made on lane 38 after having 2 shots go basically through the nose, and finding something playing that line.
  2. I’ve been applying what I do for my right side spares (keeping the target pin in my peripheral vision, drawing a line from my feet, though my target spot on the lane, and the pin, and trying to keep the ball on that line through the pushaway) to my left side, and I’ve noticed an improvement on that side, as well. In particular, I ran a spare percentage analysis on BowlSK again, and I am now over 50% on the season shooting the single 7 pin, which has been a trouble pin.

Result: 206-189-215=610
Average (57 games): 189
Average for last 9 games: 208
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 575

While I was having a decent night, my teammates weren’t necessarily (except for Carl, who also had 2 games over his average), and our opponents were enough over their average to take all 4 points. I didn’t feel so bad about the sweep, however, when I learned that 2 other teams also lost all of the points to start the second half.

A trend through the first half

Thanks to the new reports feature of BowlSK, I was able to run an analysis of my spares left and made both all of last season and through the first half of this season, and a trend caught my eye:

Single 10 pin in 2008-09: 51/79 (64.6%)
Single 10 pin through first half of 2009-10: 44/59 (74.6%)

I’m on pace to leave the single 10 pin 118 times by the end of this season, well more than last season, but I am also picking up the pin a greater percentage of the time. Combine this with the fact that I’m getting strikes at a slightly greater rate (46.6% through first half compared to 42.4% last season), and it’s little wonder that my average is 9 pins higher through the first half compared to the same point of the season last year.

My Week 18 bowling, frame-by-frame (Link to series on BowlSK)

The skinny: I hit my AVG+1 yet again, but I was hoping for more after the first game. Splits and washouts mostly did me in, but I missed a makeable spare in each of the last 2 games, as well.

Result: 243-160-198=601
Average (54 games): 189
Average for last 9 games: 210
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 615

The younger Ed Godino was back tonight, and he keyed a net win for his team against us tonight. Judging from the finish of the other matches, I think we ended the first half in 6th place.

I have also joined the virtual league that has been formed on the BowlingFans.com site, and I will be putting up a link in the sidebar to the league page/blog (look for “BowlingCommunity Mixed Virtual League”) in the “Author’s links” category. Tonight was my first night of bowling for the virtual league.
