Just a minor edit to the link to Dexter in the “Equipment Sites” category…the link now points directly to the bowling shoes section of their site rather than their front page. This should be more convenient. 😀

Link to 900 Global added to sidebar
A visitor in the #BowlingFans IRC channel alerted me to the existence of 900 Global, another manufacturer of bowling balls and shoes, so the link to 900 Global’s site has been added to the sidebar in the “Equipment Sites” category. I don’t think 900 Global’s stuff is selling anywhere online, but the site has a pro shop listing (look on the bottom of the menu on the left) where you can pick the state you reside in from a drop-down list and get a listing of pro shops carrying 900 Global equipment in that state.
Standings update for Aug. 8
The sweep of the “Killer Bees” this week helped my team jump up to 5th place in the league standings. However, we are still 14 points behind Team 18 for the lead with only 2 weeks left. We bowl against another team behind us, Team 9, next week, then it will be the position round, which, if it were to be next week, would put us up against Team 12, which took 6 points from us earlier in the season.
BowlSpace exclusive: “Best series ever!”
As I would like to do whenever I have a notable event, my full post on my new best-ever series has gone up on my BowlSpace blog rather than here. I will sum up that the new best-ever series is a 694, narrowly missing my first 700 series.
I will repeat the additional note I made in the post here, however: Dan Monahan nearly had the first 300 game of the league tonight, getting the first 11 before leaving the 6-10 (as a lefty) for a 298. Great game Dan! 😀
EDIT: The “About” page has also been edited to reflect the new high series, and I also took the time to make additional edits to make the first paragraph more concise.
Thoughts on PBA 2008-09 Tour format announcement
Overall, I like that there will seemingly be something different every week during the season. Especially interesting will be the Ultimate Scoring Championship (in which the pros will bowl on a condition similar to that which most of us league bowlers see on a weekly basis) and the Plastic Ball Championship (which will take the equipment factor out of the equation).
I also like that several tournaments will be contested on two of the regular PBA oil patterns instead of just one. The intriguing tournament with this format will be the National Bowling Stadium Championship, which will be contested on the Cheetah and Shark patterns…there couldn’t be two more different oil patterns to use. For the TV show in these events, I believe that starting lane strategy has the potential to be important, as if you have the advantage of choosing which lane to start on, you could choose to finish on your stronger pattern, and a versatile player like Tommy Jones or Mika Koivuniemi could choose to have his opponent finish on his weaker pattern.
Needless to say, I’m very much looking forward to this coming PBA Tour season. 😀
Link to “Petersen Classic” added to sidebar
I had heard my two Chicago friends from the BowlingFans.com gang talk about this scratch tournament, and I finally found the tournament’s site today, so I decided to add a link to it in the “Bowling Sites” category of the sidebar. I don’t know if I’ll ever be good enough to have a chance in this one, but it is one of the better-known tournaments, so that led me to include the link.
Also, as my friend who runs the bowling scorekeeping site wants to have the site known as “BowlSK”, I have renamed that link. It is my plan to start using the site for my fall league so I don’t waste blog space on stating what happened during the night, as I can just link the series sheet on BowlSK.
A mixed bag
There was some good and bad to take out of today’s practice. I had some nice shots in my first game mechanics work, but missed a couple of 4 pins, which held my “score” down to the 190s. I was really struggling in my corner pin work, as I threw at least three attempts at the 10 in the gutter, and missing the 10 carried over into my game for score, as I left 2 10s in the game, a weak one and a ringing one, making only the ringing one. There was also a weird attempt at the 2-4-5 where I thought I had a shot that made the spare, but it only took out the 2 and the 5. I could’ve still saved a game in the 190s with a double in the 10th, but my shot in the 11th frame missed badly right, and I was left with a picket-fence type leave, which I made for a 186.
One more league night, then the tournament Sunday (assuming Sherm gets my entry this week).
July 2008 “People’s Tournament” at E. Providence Lanes
The People’s Tournament’s site reports that Phil Hall (186 avg., Brunswick Zone Lowell) was the July tournament winner at East Providence Lanes, defeating Ryan McPartland (199 avg., AMF Auburn Lanes) in the final by a score of 245-172 (with handicaps). For the locals, Stephanie Girouard (145 avg., AMF Taunton Lanes) led the way in 3rd, and Sally Toppan (166 avg.) was the top bowler from Westgate Lanes (5th).
The site notes that Hall suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle accident about a year ago, so I hope I can provide a similar story next week. 😀

Standings update for Aug. 1
The six point night this week allowed my team to move up one position to 8th. Team 18 still leads the league by a healthy 6 point margin over Team 5 with three weeks left. The remaining schedule until the Week 13 position round has my team facing two teams currently behind us in the standings: the Killer Bees and Team 9. If the standings remain more or less the same, Team 18 will not face Team 5 until the position round.
The check is in the mail
I am about to spring a surprise…
My entry into the August 10th “People’s Tournament” at Westgate Lanes is on its way to Sherm Cowan, and I have also emailed him to let him know my average can be verified through LeagueSecretary.com. I knew when I decided to make my comeback that if I became any good again, I would very much like to compete in tournaments again, so I’m very much looking forward to this.
I will post the day before the tournament with pre-tournament thoughts, so if you want to wish me well, wait for that post to do so (if you can…hehehehe!)
Another great night
My night started strangely enough with a shot that had my thumb stick in the ball and left the 1-2-7, however, I did make the spare. Following that with a 6-10 make and a strike, I missed the 10. I then sandwiched a strike between a couple of single pin spares before chopping the 2 off of the 1-2-8. I got myself straightened out to end the game by taking it off the sheet (4 in a row) to save a 191. Brian and Ralph had decent games, but Joy really struggled, leaving 5 splits in the game and we lost the first game by just a bit more than the handicap difference (about 60 pins).
I doubled to start the second game before my last major mistake of the night, leaving the 4-6-7 split on a slightly pulled shot and whiffing on it. I recovered with another double, but was coming in light, which meant to me that my line was experiencing carry down, requiring a move outside. I didn’t quite make the adjustment all the way, as I left the 2-4-5-8 “bucket” (which I made), then a single 2 pin (also made). I struck on the next shot, but then got a couple of bad breaks with a ringing 10 and a 7 (both made), striking on the fill for a 195. Ralph had a game in the 230s, Brian had a 200, and Joy recovered with a decent game, with our opponents struggling, resulting in us winning the second game by more than 100 pins, meaning that we were about 40 pins ahead for total starting the third game.
I started with my ball creeping high again, leaving first a 4, then a 6 (both made) before getting a strike. Getting a fast 8 (4-7) in the 4th frame by going high again meant to me that the lanes were breaking down, as I knew I threw decent shots. Therefore, I determined to make a move back inside. The move paid off in spades, as I very nearly took it off the sheet with 7 in a row before leaving a 10 on my final shot of the night for a 258, my best game in competition since coming back. The huge third game also meant two things: 1) that I broke 600 for the night, and actually fell 9 pins short of matching my personal best sanctioned series from last week with a 644; and 2) with Ralph also shooting in the 200s, Brian going over his average again, and Joy having her best game of the night, that we took third game as well for 6 points on the night. As a note, 634 was my high sanctioned series going into this league…I have beaten that score three times (not counting my near 700 in practice) just this summer. 😀
Result: 191-195-258=644
Average (30 games): 194 Last 9 average: 206
Next week’s AVG+1: 587
With the green light for winter league given by my brother, I informed Donna Bickel that I would be joining the Westgate Mixed League on Wednesday nights in the fall. I had hoped to hook up with Brian and Ralph again on Tony Attardo’s team, but their team of five was full save for the required female, so I told Donna that she could feel free to put me on any team that needs me.
Edit to “BowlSpace exclusive: “My tournament win story””
Been meaning to do this for a bit, but I finally edited the link in the “BowlSpace exclusive: “My tournament win story”” post here to point directly to the post on my BowlSpace blog. Some of you may have already seen the post, but the edit was done for the archives.

This Maryland newspaper article on third-year Baltimore Ravens cornerback Derrick Martin mentions that the offseason camp that he started in his native Colorado included a bowling event.
A downer
I had had an achy-all-over feeling most of the weekend, so I was actually thinking about taking today off from practice to rest, but I needed to go into the local SuperCuts (which is nearby Westgate Lanes) for a haircut, so I decided not to go against my Monday practice routine. I had a practice that I felt was a cut below normal (probably because I was still not feeling 100% right), but it did have its moments. I was pulling a lot of shots in mechanics work, but my last shot in that game was dead on, and probably the best of the day. My corner pin work was off, as well, but I did have a shot where I picked the 10 right out of the rack and no other pins, so I was pleased with that. In the last game, bowled for score, I did shoot my league average (and somewhat saving the practice in my mind), but if not for a mental error attempting a 4-7 spare, it would’ve been clean and in the 200s.
Getting the green light: My brother and I had a brief discussion about my finances over the weekend, and, with my health services once again stable (with my “insurance” still picking it up, at least for now), my brother saw no problem with me bowling winter league this season. Therefore, I will inform Donna Bickel, the secretary of the Wednesday night Westgate Mixed League in addition to the Wednesday Summer Mixed League, that I intend to bowl Westgate Mixed when the new season begins. 😀

This Canadian newspaper article on Calgary Flames defenseman Rhett Warrener mentions the Warrener and Friend Celebrity Bowl, held every January for a local children’s charity in Calgary. Warrener said he got the idea for the event when he was introduced to bowling by NHL great Doug Gilmour while Warrener and Gilmour were with the Buffalo Sabres.

The Chicago Cubs released information on closer Kerry Wood’s Strike Zone Celebrity Bowling Tournament, which will take place on Aug. 6 @ the 10pin bowling lounge on N. This LA Times item notes that Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer was in Los Angeles for (former USC teammate) Matt Leinart’s charity bowling tournament, as well.
Standings update for July 25
According to the updated league standings, my team is still in 9th place, but taking 6 points from us helped lift the Lounge Lizards from the league’s basement. If we’re going to make a run at the league championship, it will have to start next week, as we’re 14 points off the pace and there are only 4 weeks left.

Blog updates
Just a couple of updates to the blog for tonight…
- Given tonight’s accomplishment, the “About” page of the blog has been updated to reflect the new personal best official series.
- I got a photo of my cousins’ team after we finished bowling tonight, and that has been uploaded to the “scrapbook” page.
BowlSpace exclusive: “New personal best official series”
Given the fact that I established another new personal best official series tonight, I made the full post about the night a BowlSpace exclusive, and that link will take you directly to the post. I have one more regular post to make, and I will be doing so momentarily. 😀
A feel-good practice
Today’s practice was definitely better than the one I had last week. In my mechanics work, I had several excellent shots, and, if I was going for score, it would’ve been a good deal over my average save for a couple of open frames. In the corner pin part of practice, I only missed a couple again, but I didn’t think I missed them by very much. As I noticed the 8 pin was only sporadically going in the rack during my corner pin practice, I asked to be moved to an adjacent lane for the game I wanted to score in. It was a good one…a 212 w/ only a “Woolworth” (5-10 split) in the 10th frame keeping it from being clean.
Tony Attardo was in the building as I arrived for practice, and I learned from Marcia at the control desk that he had had a 300 in his own practice. Talking with Tony before that, however, I learned about a surprise related to one of my teammates that I think I’ll just keep under my hat until Wednesday night.
More “Equipment Sites” links added
I added a few more bowling ball companies to the “Equipment Sites” sidebar list, but two other sites have been added that are worth mentioning…
“Buddies Pro Shop” is, of course, the popular online pro shop, so now you can do a little comparison shopping with Bowling.com.
“Video Ball Reviews” is not necessarily a review site, but more like a video demo site where they tell you the lane condition, the drilling info, and pin placement for each ball, and then you can see for yourself how the ball reacts on the lane.
Follow-up to “A good recovery”
Just a few things I forgot to mention in the “A good recovery” post…
- Before bowling, Ralph told me he had won a golf tournament that day. I told him I hoped he didn’t leave his energy on the golf course, and I wish he didn’t, now.
- Also before bowling, Joy mentioned that she had bought a house in South Carolina. She will still spend her winters in Florida, but will make South Carolina her summer home, as her business partner lives there. Therefore, there’s now no chance of my team returning intact next summer.
- Lastly, I had forgotten to mention that my team had a chance to win the third game if Ralph could string together strikes in the 10th frame, but left a weak 10 (and he’s been leaving a lot of those this summer) with the first ball, giving our opponents the 8 point sweep.
Cross-training #47
This web report notes that New Orleans Saints (and former USC) running back Reggie Bush (with actress Kim Kardashian in tow) was a participant in Arizona Cardinals (and also a USC alum) quarterback Matt Leinart’s second annual charity bowling event at Hollywood’s Lucky Strikes Lanes. If I can find a more complete report on the event (with other sports stars in attendance noted), I’ll post a follow-up.
“Equipment Sites” category and links added to sidebar
I figured it was time I added a new sidebar category for bowling equipment-related links, so I have done so. A couple of links, “Bowling Ball Reviews” and Bowling.com (the online pro shop), have been moved from the general “Bowling Sites” category to the new category, but mostly the links in the new category are to equipment manufacturer sites, including popular bowling ball and shoe lines. This is by no means an exhaustive list, so try to supplement this listing with a web search. As an additional note, Storm’s site was slow in responding at press time, but they haven’t gone out of business, so be patient.
Standings update for July 18
As I thought, our poor performance the other night pushed my team back to the middle of the pack, as we are now in 9th place out of 18 teams. In fact, we actually helped our opponents, Team 18, grab the league lead. Looking ahead, one of the teams ahead of us, “Shake ‘N’ Bake,” will be our opponents in two weeks.
Follow-up to “Cross-training #45”
According to this press release, the PBA has announced the 5 pros that will participate in the Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational, all competing under an Ebonite brand (as it seems Ebonite will be a sponsor): Chris Barnes (Columbia 300), Tommy Jones (Ebonite), Jason Couch (Ebonite), Doug Kent (Hammer), and Mitch Beasley (Track). Chris Paul is the only confirmed NBA star at this time, but participants in previous celebrity bowling events put on by Chris Paul include Team USA members LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Carmello Anthony, and Dwight Howard.
