Northeast Amateur Tournament announces USBC certification

Since joining the board of directors of the Brockton Bowling Association, I’ve had a self-imposed avoidance of non-sanctioned tournaments, meaning I haven’t bowled in the People’s Tournament in some time, and never the Northeast Amateur Tournament, and the only sanctioned events in the area I knew about were anything the Brockton Bowling Association runs (Bowler of the Year is invitational, I don’t have a team for our championship tournament, and there was no Hall of Fame Classic last year), the state tournament (which is again a case of not having a team), NEBA (which is a scratch tournament, and I still consider myself a handicap bowler), and the TNBA’s singles tournament at Westgate Lanes in the fall (which I never entered).

This may be changing, however, as the Northeast Amateur Tournament announced on their Facebook page yesterday that they have obtained USBC certification for the remainder of the Northeast Amateur Tournament season. This will include tournaments at Westgate Lanes in March and April, so I’m very much looking forward to bowling the NAT in the future.

December 2012 People’s Tournament results

On Dec. 8 & 9, The People’s Tournament held their biggest event ever, with a $32,000 guaranteed prize fund and $10,000 guaranteed to the champion, at Westgate Lanes, and had a tournament record 312 entries. The TPT reported Daniel Nazzaro (Town Line Ten Pin, 174 avg.) as taking home the top prize, having defeated Jason Breeden (Strikers East [NH], 184 avg.) by a score (with handicaps) of 234-203. The TPT reported the Westgate Lanes cashers being Jim Ferguson (5th, 204 avg.), John Jemison (19th, 190 avg.), Terrance Williams (20th, 185 avg.), Hans Cheung (23rd, 182 avg.), Rich LeCain (25th, 210 avg.), Danny Khuu (26th, 218 avg.), Eric Durden (29th, 177 avg.), Ying Mok (30th, 170 avg.), Josh Skuby (31st, 170 avg.) and Scott Wolkovich (32nd, 204 avg.).

Dec. 2 league standings update

After losing all four points, “Spare Parts” fell to 4th place, five points behind “Dee’s Boys III,” who lead both “Sweet Rolls” and “Split Happens” by four points. My team has a chance to close ground on the lead, as we have “Dee’s Boys III” as opponents in the coming week.

Virtual league note: The virtual league was given Thanksgiving week “off,” so scoring in that league resumed this week. I will have the usual results post tomorrow.

Tri-City tournament note: The Tri-City Women’s Bowling Association’s city tournament scheduled for this weekend at Westgate Lanes was canceled.

Nov. 2012 NEBA honor score note

Meant to mention this earlier, but Jon Van Hees, just back in New England from the World Series of Bowling in Las Vegas, posted an 11 in a row 290 game in the fifth game to get into the 9:00 AM Sunday squad cut.

Also wanted to mention that the tournament was contested on the Kegel Boardwalk pattern, a pattern Alex Aguiar historically has excelled on at Westgate Lanes.

Alex Aguiar wins 4th NEBA title of year, 14th all-time, at Westgate Lanes

As I figured out that the video of the title match could take some time in being posted, I decided to go ahead with the results and post the video later.

NEBA reported that Alex Aguiar won his 4th NEBA title of 2012 this past weekend at Westgate Lanes. The title is his 14th all-time, tying him for 2nd on the all-time list with Chris Rebstock, Barry Warshafsky, and Bill Webb (who cashed in this tournament). Alex defeated Bill Holota by a score of 212-192 in the title match. The posted prize list and match play results also show that Westgate Lanes league bowlers Stephen Dale, Jr., Jim Ferguson, Danny Khuu (who was high qualifier), and Brian Gaskill cashed in the tournament.

Alex Aguiar throws pair of 300s in NEBA at Westgate Lanes

The highlight of tonight’s 6 PM NEBA tournament squad was a pair of 300 games, the second and last games of the five game qualifying block, thrown by Alex Aguiar. The video I got of the last strike of the first 300 game is below (The original video was shaky, but has been corrected by YouTube, for the most part.):

Boy, do I love having my new phone! 😀

Ryan Yelle wins 2nd BBA Bowler of the Year title; Jeff Carter throws 300

Finally posting to my blog after an exciting day of bowling in the Brockton Bowling Association’s Bowler of the Year tournament.

First, during qualifying, Jeff Carter provided the fireworks with a perfect game. I should mention at this point that I recently bought an HTC EVO V 4G smartphone (the repackaged EVO 3D for Virgin Mobile), and, using the built-in camera, I was able to get video of Jeff’s last strike, which I then posted to the association’s Facebook page, the first of what I hope will be many posts to the page from my new phone.

In the end, however, it was Ryan Yelle who came away with the title, becoming the first two-time Bowler of the Year, after defeating Bob Hamilton in the final match by a score of 194-184. The stepladder finals got off to a dramatic start when Hamilton tied Chuck Gerlach at 214, sending the match to a 9th and 10th frame roll-off, won by Bob 40-27. Bob then defeated Nate Abdow to get into the final match. A photo of Ryan and Bob after the match is also on the association Facebook page.

The association will have a more detailed recap on our website soon.

Oct. 2012 NAT doubles results

The Northeast Amateur Tournament reported that George Jones and Mike Major (the latter a Westgate Lanes league bowler) were the champions of the doubles tournament held on Oct. 7 at Westgate Lanes. The pair defeated Jonathan Thomas and Jayme Silva by a score of 920-891 (with handicap) in the two-game championship match. Other Westgate Lanes league bowlers cashing in the event were Paul Loberman & Eric Durden, Brian Gaskill (with Louis Petrillo), Hakim Emmanuel & Devon McGregor, Alex Aguiar (with Jon Van Hees), and Tony Bennett (with Paul Smith).

Oct. 2012 TNBA tournament note

The Boston Bowling Senate of the TNBA will run a handicapped (100% of 220) singles tournament on Oct. 13 & 14 at Westgate Lanes, with squad times of 12 PM, 1:30 PM, and 3 PM both days. Entry fee is $25, and all bowlers must be certified by both the USBC and the TNBA (TNBA cards may be purchased at the tournament site). Entry forms are available at the desk.

August 2012 People’s Tournament results

The People’s Tournament reported Sean Wolf (AMF Lang’s Lanes [RI], 164 avg.) as the winner of the event held on Aug. 12 at Westgate Lanes. Wolf defeated Gary Maharne (AMF Silver Lanes [CT], 176 avg.) by a score (with handicaps) of 237-208 in the title match. Other cashers included “Hawk” Earle (Westgate Lanes, 193 avg.) and Charles Donovan (North Bowl, 190 avg.)

The People’s Tournament is planning a big tournament for December at Westgate Lanes. How big? Visit their homepage to find out. 😉

“From the archives”: My LBT win

The LBT (League Bowlers Tournament) I won took place on the weekend of Oct. 21 and 22, 1989. I had cashed in one previous LBT tournament, so this would be my second appearance in an LBT stepladder finals. To get there, I had to qualify first, however, and I took my shot in the late squad (10 PM) on Saturday; late squads back then generally agreed with my body clock because I was working evenings and would be at my peak performance late. I was entering with a 147 average, so was getting the maximum 45 pins per game handicap.

I started qualifying with a 170 scratch game during which I had a turkey in the 7th, 8th, and 9th frames, and just kept improving, with a 194 second game, and capping it off with a one-open 220 game, which would stand as my best tournament game until my comeback. The 584 scratch series translated to a 719 handicap set, and I would learn when the results were posted that I knocked Steve Travers (one of my best bowling friends to this day) out of one of the qualifying spots and I would return the next day for the semifinals. I told a friend on Facebook many years later that I don’t know how I managed to get sleep for that Sunday, but that it would be fortunate that I did.

My spot in the finals was set up by a 211 game (that number would be important later on, as well) in which I had a five-bagger from the 4th frame. I had to hang on with games of 161 and 148 following for a 520/655 series that would put me in the third spot in the stepladder, meaning I would face the winner of the match between “Hawk” Earle and Bob Hamilton, won by “Hawk” with a 218 scratch game.

I decided I would go first against “Hawk” because I liked being in a position of knowing what I needed to win, and starting first meant finishing last. The match turned out to be nothing too special, as I had a 162 scratch game, but “Hawk” only threw a 188 scratch game himself, which was not enough to overcome the difference in handicap. Back then, “Hawk” was one of the better bowlers in the house (and is still pretty good today), so knowing I survived against him provided a shot of confidence.

My second match would be against Jim Yost, who had the same average as “Hawk” did (or at least as much handicap). Jim left four straight single pins to start the match, when I would really get going with a five-bagger from the third frame. Jim doubled in the 5th and 6th, but the roll I started on prompted the scorer to provide “commentary” by first switching our handicaps on the scorer, then making Jim’s handicap “+145”. I had not a single spare in the match, but I did shoot 190 scratch and 235 with handicap to Jim’s 179/187 to advance to the title match.

The title match would be against Joyce Bernard, and I’ll post the scoresheet below (click to view full-size):

Coming up in the 10th frame, I only needed the first strike, a five in count on the second ball, and make the spare. However, in an error probably caused by me wanting to be aggressive, I thought I needed the double to win, and still got it, punching out on the fill to put the icing on the cake. The top part of the item attached to the telescorer sheet was how Dick Roche wrote up the event for the Thursday bowling column in the Enterprise.

A couple of other items worthy of note:

  • I threw a used original black Angle throughout the tournament, and I believe that was the first ball I ever had drilled fingertip. I believe the ball was lost a couple of years later.
  • In the days leading up to the tournament, I could visualize in my mind my name in big red letters on the back-end wall (as was custom for Westgate Lanes back then), and I share this only to show a little positive thinking really does help. 😀

My 5th high school reunion was just a month later; you can imagine my joy in telling my friends of my accomplishment. My mother was proud, as well. 😀

Danny Khuu posts 300 game in NEBA at E. Providence Lanes

Keith Tantillo was kind enough to inform me that Danny Khuu threw a 300 game this weekend at East Providence Lanes in the NEBA event. The match play results posted by NEBA showed that Khuu finished in the top 16, with Dave Debiase of Wallingford, CT defeating Alex Aguiar 258-225 for the title. In addition to Aguiar and Khuu, Donie Corneau and Rich Fulton were the other Westgate Lanes league bowlers that cashed in the event.

Ed Roberts, USA dominate Super Senior division of 50th Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas

Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Ed Roberts led Team USA in a domination of the Super Senior division of the 50th annual Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas this week at Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac, FL (outside of Ft. Lauderdale), winning four of the five possible gold medals and a silver medal in the event he didn’t win. Roberts lost his first event, men’s singles, to Hilton Nunez of the Dominican Republic, but rallied in the other events, winning men’s doubles with Jerry Teel and mixed doubles with Lucy Sandelin before capping off the tournament with the gold medals in the team event (Carol Teel was the other team member) and men’s all-events.

The Tournament of the Americas is an annual invitational tournament conducted by the Pan-American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) and its member bowling federations. For full results, please visit the tournament website. As full final team and all-events standings had yet to be posted at press time, a Miami Herald report was also used in the preparation of this post.

Alex Aguiar, Johnny Petraglia Jr. combine to win NEBA doubles @ E. Providence Lanes

NEBA reported that Alex Aguiar teamed with Johnny Petraglia Jr. to win last weekend’s NEBA doubles event at East Providence Lanes, tying Steve Violette and Eric Copping at 471 in the title match and winning a 9th and 10th frame roll-off 89-66. The title was Alex’s 13th and Petraglia’s first in NEBA. The match play results also reported Westgate Lanes league bowlers Donie Corneau (with Jon Van Hees), Rich Fulton (with Randy Hagemoser), and Danny Khuu (with Todd Lathrop) as also cashing in the tournament.

EDIT: I originally credited the PBA and USBC Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia with being Alex’s partner, but forgot that he has a namesake son.

June 2 outing with brother

Just a quick note about today’s outing with my brother: It was a morning visit to the lanes, and my left foot is often balky in the morning, but maybe more so today because of the rain. That said, I was still in the 160s and 170s for all three games despite my footwork suffering. I switched back to my Tropical Breeze after starting with the Fast, so if I bowl next week (and that is in doubt…I’ll “cross that bridge” next week if I have to), the Tropical Breeze will probably be the only ball out of the bag other than my spare ball.

Note: I’ve noticed some viewers finding this blog on a search for the oil pattern for the USBC Youth Open. Those people should probably check Bowl.com by clicking “Tournaments” in the menu, then the “Youth Open” link; if the pattern for this tournament is published, it will probably be there.

Bob Hamilton, Sean Richard throw perfect games

Two different perfect games to tell you about…

For the first, Bob Hamilton threw a perfect second game tonight in the Wednesday Summer Mixed League, and was actually threatening the house record after a 279 first game, but only threw a 200 third game (this may be corrected later in a comment) and only came away with a 779 series.

The second happened away from Westgate Lanes on Memorial Day, as Sean Richard had one in the Phat Doubles Tournament at AMF Silver Lanes.

Congrats to both Bob and “Seany Kash”! 😀
