June 2010 People’s Tournament results

The People’s Tournament reported that Ed Greene (Westgate Lanes, 193 avg.) was the winner of the June event held at Westgate Lanes. Greene defeated Dave Sloane (North Bowl Lanes, 154 avg.) by a score of 236-217 (with handicaps) in the title match. Roland Sandefur (191 avg.) was the only other Westgate Lanes bowler in the top 8, but I should recognize my buddy Rob Dickens (161 avg.), who made it to the round of 16.

Note: The TPT has decided to cancel the July and August tournaments, so the next TPT event will be held at AMF Silver Lanes on Sept. 25 and 26.

Jonathan Van Hees cashes in 2010 PBA Regional Players Championship

The PBA reported that Jonathan Van Hees of Charlestown, RI was one of the cashers in the 2010 Regional Players Championship, held on Memorial Day weekend at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, MI. Van Hees was the top qualifier for match play, but lost in 4 games of a best-of-5 match to Chris Hibbitts of Ft. Worth, TX in the match play round of 32. The tournament was eventually won by Riga Kalfas of Florence, KY, who defeated Chris Collins of Savannah, GA 236-216 in the championship match.

Two other bowlers from the BBA cashed: John Hayes, Jr. (Westgate Lanes, 200 avg.) was in the semifinals, and Herb Brown (Kingston Lanes, 170 avg.) was in the top 16.

May 2010 NEBA results (Westgate Lanes)

As reported on NEBA’s homepage, Mike Lichstein added to his record total of career NEBA titles by winning the event held this past weekend at Westgate Lanes. Lichstein defeated Bill Green by a 259-236 score in the title match. For the “locals,” Richie Fulton made the quarterfinals, and I’m fairly certain the other local cashers included Alex Aguiar, Danny Khuu, Sean Richard, and John Ellis.

Rich Fulton defends Hall of Fame Tournament title

As reported by the Brockton Bowling Association, Rich Fulton successfully defended his Hall of Fame Tournament (also known as “the plastic ball tournament”) title Sunday at Boston Bowl Hanover. Fulton won a three-way title match, which also included Keith Tantillo and Rob Young, by shooting a 279 scratch, 299 handicap game. Tantillo took second w/ a 202/239 score, while Young was third with 153/194. Mike Trent and John Hayes Jr. were the other cashers.

Mar. 2010 People’s Tournament results

The People’s Tournament reported William Trudell (AMF Cranston Lanes, 215 avg.) as the winner of the event held on Mar. 20 & 21 at AMF Cranston Lanes. Trudell defeated James Ryan (Lanes & Games, 178 avg.) by a score of 203-198 (with handicaps) in the championship match. Representing the Brockton local area, Will Cabral (Westgate Lanes, 179 avg.) and Judith Yankee (North Bowl Lanes, 141 avg.) both made the semifinals.

2010 Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Fame Weekend

The Brockton Bowling Association will hold its annual Hall of Fame Weekend on April 10 and 11, with the events as follows:

  • The Hall of Fame Dinner will be held on that Saturday evening at the Brockton Holiday Inn (across from the Westgate Mall). Bill Major is this year’s inductee. Tickets will be available at the Westgate Lanes and Boston Bowl Hanover locations of USA Pro Shop, and may also be available at AMF Taunton Lanes, North Bowl Lanes, and Kingston Ten Pin (I’ll try to confirm).
  • The Hall of Fame Tournament will be held that Sunday at Boston Bowl Hanover. The format is the same as last year: a handicapped eliminator with bowlers allowed to use only plastic or rubber equipment. Entry forms should be available at participating centers.

Alex Aguiar stopped by Ritchie Allen in second round of Match Play Championship

Alex Aguiar’s run at the Go RVing Match Play Championship ended in this morning’s second round when he lost to the #36 seed, Ritchie Allen, in six games. The match was even after four games, but Aguiar lost a very close fifth game, 241-239, and Allen closed it out with a 201-193 game. I’ll comment when I know if Alex cashed because of winning in the first round (he should, but I want to make sure).

Alex Aguiar upsets Chris Barnes in first round of Go RVing Match Play Championship

Alex Aguiar of Dartmouth, MA pulled off one of the major upsets of the opening session of the PBA Tour’s Go RVing Match Play Championship at the Norwich Bowling and Entertainment Center in Norwich, CT, defeating former Player of the Year Chris Barnes, the defending champion of the tournament, in five games of a best-of-seven match. Aguiar advanced to the main field by finishing 5th in yesterday’s Tour Qualifying Round, pairing him against Barnes when the final bracket was released. The two bowlers split the first two games before Aguiar took command of the match by throwing games of 279 and 268, then won the clinching game by a score of 254-213. The tournament is being contested on a mixed pattern, with the Shark on the left lane and the Cheetah on the right lane.

I will continue to follow Alex’s progress and post either at the end of Alex’s run or as events warrant. Interestingly, this match may have been a preview of Saturday’s installment of the Chris Barnes Challenge, as Aguiar had the high bid of $1,500 yesterday, but the three-game, total pinfall match had not been finalized at press time.

Jon Van Hees makes final 8 in PBA Mt. Greylock Open; Ed Roberts leads Westgate cashers

The PBA reported that Jonathan Van Hees of Charlestown, RI was one of the final eight bowlers in this weekend’s PBA East regional tour opener, the Mt. Greylock Open at Mt. Greylock Bowl in N. Adams, MA. Van Hees was eliminated in two straight games in a best-of-three match by the eventual winner, former exempt player Dave D’Entremont of Middleburg Heights, OH, who defeated Jeff Zaffino of Warren, PA 257-217 in the title match. The tournament was contested on the Cheetah oil pattern.

A few bowlers from Westgate Lanes competed this weekend, and I’m happy to say that four of them cashed: Ed Roberts, Danny Khuu, John Ellis, and Rich Fulton. Congrats guys! 😀

Brockton/Foxvale/Tri-City Mixed Doubles results

The results of the annual Brockton-Foxvale-Tri-City mixed doubles tournament, run by the Tri-City Women’s Bowling Association at Westgate Lanes on Feb. 27 & 28:

  5. Debbie & Dave Randall 1409

Congrats to all the cashers (especially my cousins). 😀

Mixed doubles notes

I spent the early part of this afternoon watching the mixed doubles tournament, and wanted to note a couple of things:

  1. Kerry Garcia, who was on the pair my cousins Dave and Debbie were on, started with the first 7 before leaving something, after which I turned my attention to John and Eileen.
  2. Later, in that same grouping, Dave shot a 245 for a new personal best game. 😀

Not related to the tournament, but Dave shared before bowling that their daughter Melissa recently bowled her first 200 game in the TNBA league. 😀

New England crowns first high school bowling champion

The USBC reported that, by winning the New Hampshire state individual championship, Gilman Chamberlain out of Raymond High School became the first high school bowling champion in New England history. New Hampshire started sanctioning tenpin bowling as a co-ed varsity sport this winter season, with certified matches by high school teams leading up to this week’s state individual championship at Strikers East in Raymond, in which Chamberlain defeated top-seeded Nick Stilian of Pinkerton Academy by a score of 221-208 for the title in the Championship Flight, for bowlers with averages over 150. The Medal Flight, for those with averages under 150, was won by Jacob Martineau of Keene High School by a score of 145-119 over Nishon Radhakrishman of Souhegan High School.

Alex Aguiar cashes in February High Roller at Sam’s Town

Congrats to Alex Aguiar, who, as reported on the High Roller blog, cashed in the February High Roller at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas. Aguiar lost in the first elimination round to Craig Auerbach of Sunrise, FL by a 227-194 score. The event was won by Rick Miller of Lincoln, NE, who defeated Larry Hoffman of Fountain Hills, AZ by a score of 168-162 in the title match. Better luck next time, Alex.

Thanks to Brian Gaskill, who brought Alex’s performance to my attention.

Jonathan Van Hees finishes 22nd at USBC Masters

Jonathan Van Hees, a name some of my readers are familiar with, cashed in another major tournament this week, being listed in 22nd place in the standings of the USBC Masters, going on at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, NV. Van Hees qualified for match play in 40th place, with a 212 average for 15 games, and defeated Mike Fagan in the first round of double-elimination match play before losing to Pete Weber in the second round of the winner’s bracket. He defeated Fagan again to advance to today’s match play, then defeated Tony Reyes in his first match today before being eliminated from the tournament by Tom Smallwood, the winner of the PBA World Championship this season.

2010 Brockton Bowling Association Championships unofficial results posted

The unofficial results

Just a couple of things to note:

  1. Nate Abdow’s 836 in singles helped him to also win the scratch all-events title.
  2. Tina Gannon, being part of the winning scratch and handicap doubles pairing, is, to my memory, the first female champion in Brockton Bowling Association history. I shall try to confirm this with Bob Young next week when I see him.

EDIT: A check of the BBA website’s list of previous champions yielded the fact that Mo Morrison was the handicap all-events champion of the tournament in the 1999-2000 season, so she may have been the first female champion in the history of the tournament.

Jan. 2010 People’s Tournament results

(Note: The following is a recap of an event in which the author of this blog participated.)

The People’s Tournament reported Ed Miller (Westgate Lanes, 170 avg.) as the winner of the event held on Jan. 30 and 31 at Westgate Lanes. Miller defeated Lucindo Rosa (AMF Cranston Lanes, 208 avg.) by a score of 195-175 (with handicaps). For the “locals,” Cindy Cabral (155 avg.) was also in the semifinals, while Brian Alleyne (160 avg.), Bill Major (214 avg.), and Greg Hudson (200 avg.) were also in the final eight.

2010 Brockton Bowling Association city tournament, Day 2

I had to miss doubles and singles this morning due to the buses not running until close to noon, but I did make it over for the team event. A quick query of Bob Young yielded the fact that Jim Burt had a fourth 300 in this tournament today in the singles event. I watched all of the team event, which started with Bill Major coming only a stone 7 shy of a fifth 300 in the first game. When all was said and done, “Dazed and Confused” (Sean Richard, Rob Young, Jason Sherwood, and Pat Carrara) ended the tournament in first place in both the scratch and handicap team event. Congrats to these four.

Rob Young told me the unofficial standings would be online Tuesday, so I shall post a link to them then.

2010 Brockton Bowling Association city tournament recap, Day 1

I couldn’t make it down to the lanes today because of family matters, but Sean Richard gave me a recap of Day 1 of this year’s city tournament via Facebook. The tournament is being contested on the new USBC Blue oil pattern, making Westgate Lanes (I believe) the first center to use one of the color patterns in a regularly-scheduled event. Highlights of the day included 300 games by Tony Bennett and Tina Gannon in doubles, and Nate Abdow added one in singles en route to a 268-300-268=836 series. Congrats to all three on their performances.

My day at the People’s Tournament, Jan. 31

My qualification attempt, frame-by-frame (Link to series on BowlSK)

My own comment to the series pretty much sums it up. I had never seen the “Dead Man’s Curve” prior to today, but I felt I threw a few decent shots on it, especially in the second game. More importantly, however, I didn’t give anything away with single-pin misses…it was when I left more than one pin standing on the deck that I ran into trouble, especially with 5 splits (one, a 3-10 in the 10th frame of Game 3, made) and a couple of washouts. All-in-all, if I could be happy shooting in the 490s, today would be one of those days.

Edit to last 2 league series made: As Harry Thibeault, Jr. told me that it was “Main Street” now out on Wednesday nights, I have edited the last 2 league series on BowlSK to reflect the new oil pattern.

The payoff

My brother and I had our first bowling outing of the new year today, which I used to try out some things on the new house shot. What made today’s outing particularly satisfying, however, was something that happened in the 2nd frame of our last game. I left a 6-7 in the frame, after which my brother said, “I’ll give you $20 if you make this.” I told him, “You’re on!”…and proceeded to convert the split, whereupon my brother dug a couple of ten-dollar bills out of his wallet to pay up. The extra cash came at a good time, as I wanted to take down the surface of my Hy-Road in preparation for the tournament tomorrow, and part of it will also pay for side pots tomorrow when I bowl.

Jan. 25 practice

Today, I had my (becoming) usual pre-tournament practice session with Rob, but, as is unusual, I decided not to take practice on the tough shot and instead focused on getting my house shot game in order with the recent change to the shot. I concentrated on playing a tighter inside line with the Hy-Road, but was having mixed results, mostly due to not having my speed control “down” on the line yet. Rob, for his part, had a third game in the 250s, but he plays more down-and-in than I do, so he may have had a better “look” at the pocket than me.

Tournament note: The annual Brockton, Foxvale, and Tri-City mixed doubles tournament is scheduled for Feb. 27 and 28 at Westgate Lanes. Entries close on Feb. 11.

December 2009 People’s Tournament results

(Note: The following is a recap of an event in which the author participated.)

The People’s Tournament reported Brian Gaskill (Westgate Lanes, 218 avg.) as the winner of the year-end event held on Dec. 12 & 13 at Westgate Lanes. Gaskill defeated Jayme Silva (Wonder Bowl, 200 avg.) in the title match by a score of 197-164 (with handicaps). Westgate Lanes bowlers dominated the top of the prize list, as Brian Egan (213 avg.) and Linwood Cowen, Jr. (180 avg.) also made the semifinals, while Maya Christie (120 avg.) was also in the final 8. Gaskill, in addition to collecting the $5,000 first place prize, won the tournament director’s strike jackpot in the Saturday squad (for $500), as did Bill Major in the first Sunday squad (for $1,000).
