Fall 2011 Week 14 virtual league results (with final standings)

“JaMMeRs” had an immediate rematch against Team 13 in Week 14, and again took all 7 points, enabling my virtual team to finish the league in 9th place. “Bipolar Rollers,” consisting of “Joe Bowler,” “slaterracing,” “TominNJ,” and “Upriser,” won all 7 points from Team 12 to take the league championship. “Upriser” is on a championship team for a second time, the first virtual league participant to have done so.

“Rocket 5,” consisting of “Doogie,” “jbungard,” “mkhawk21,” and “Rocket,” set a league record four-man series in the last week.

Jon Van Hees wins 5th career NEBA title at Westgate Lanes

NEBA reported that Jon Van Hees won his 5th NEBA title at Westgate Lanes this past weekend, defeating Matt Brockett in the championship match by a score of 245-200. As noted in the posted results, the Westgate Lanes league bowlers who cashed are as follows: Tony Bennett (who was in the semifinals), Ryan Evans, Danny Khuu, Stephen Dale Jr., Rich LeCain, Ed Roberts, Steve Travers, Alex Aguiar, Rai Doblmeier, and Ryan Yelle.

Congrats to Jon, Matt, and all of the Westgate Lanes cashers. 😀

Dec. 2011 People’s Tournament results

The People’s Tournament reported that Rich LeCain (Westgate Lanes, 205 avg.) was the winner of the event held last weekend at Westgate Lanes. Rich defeated Zach Leverant (Westgate Lanes, 170 avg.) by a score (with handicaps) of 227-189 in the title match. Also representing Westgate Lanes, Paris Cook (198 avg.) was also in the semifinals.

As a side note that I neglected to mention previously, Danny Khuu won the tournament director’s strike jackpot by posting a 299 game during Saturday’s qualifying. Congrats to Danny on the honor score (though he can’t get an award for it).

Dec. 14 league night recap

My Week 15 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My line was there pretty much all night, but my execution let me down for most of it. Particularly disappointing was a bad spare game night; I had worked it up to being something of a strength in recent weeks.

Result: 156-179-147=482
Average (45 games): 170
Average for last 9 games: 163
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 514

Berta had a solid night, but that was pretty much it. The point we did win is in question because it was close enough for a scoring error last week for this week’s opponents to have a say in the outcome when the error is corrected and averages adjusted.

Fall 2011 Week 13 virtual league results

“JaMMeRs” executed a much-needed sweep of Team 13 in the fall virtual league’s penultimate week, doing so despite “Rocket Jr” of the latter team putting up a 290 third game, which was a good enough 11 in a row score for recognition on the league’s “Honor Roll” page.

A quirk in the standings has my virtual team involved in an immediate rematch against Team 13 in this week’s positon round. The worst we can do is finish in a tie for our current position, 12th, and we can conceivably move up to 8th. Three teams, Team 12, “Bipolar Rollers,” and Team 4 can still conceivably win the league’s championship, with Team 12 having the advantage in points.

Link to Mark Baker’s site added to sidebar

Found this site on Facebook…Mark Baker is sometimes called “Coach For The Pros” because he works with many of the PBA’s stars, with his most successful student seeming to be Chris Barnes, who happens to be my favorite pro on tour. Barnes, in fact, wrote a testimonial for Baker’s website, which is now linked in the sidebar in the “Coaching/Tips” category. I don’t know if he’ll ever be in New England for a camp or clinic, but his schedule is on the website if you’re ever wondering (or are thinking about traveling to one of them as a sort of bowling vacation).

Dec. 7 league night recap

My Week 14 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

After a couple of weeks under the mark, I finally got back over 500 on a night. It was far from an artistic success, with only one double, but I got better as the night went on. I was slightly worse on my spares tonight, with four missed “makeables,” including a couple of single pins, but I was still near 80% on those, so my spare game improvement continues to be a bright spot on this season.

Result: 143-172-192=507
Average (42 games): 171
Average for last 9 games: 159
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 528

Tonight was a watershed night for Carl. In his fifth season of bowling, he finally threw his first 200 game with a 204 in the second game. As for the rest of the team, Pat was solid, and Brian also had 2 games over his average. The result was the team taking all of the points.

Wing Pau wins Dec. 2011 Northeast Amateur Tournament at Westgate Lanes

The Northeast Amateur Tournament’s site reported that Wing Pau, whom I was able to determine is a bowler in the Coke Classic League, was the champion in their event held last Sunday at Westgate Lanes. Wing Pau defeated Paul Loberman, a bowler in the Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen league, in the title match by a score (with handicaps) of 241-237. Also, for the Westgate Lanes bowlers that I know, Steve Travers and Azriel Nguyen were also in the top 8.

The NAT also reported a record 152 entries for this event, so we think they’ll be back. 😀

Fall 2011 Week 12 virtual league results

“JaMMeRs” lost the lion’s share to “Legends,” taking only the second game, and allowed the latter team to creep closer to getting out of the cellar, as we’re now only 7 points ahead of them in 12th and 5 points ahead of “Silicon Stewart” with two weeks left. There is currently a tie at the top between Team 12 and Team 4, with “Bipolar Rollers” two points behind and “Wrecking Balls” four points behind.

Dec. 4 league standings update

After taking one point from “The 5 G’s,” “Pinfall Wizards” are now tied for 6th with that team and “Dee’s Boys II,” 14 points behind “The Mustangs,” who widened their lead over “Outta Da Guttah” to 4.5 points. My team bowls against “Warren’s Girls” this week.

Nov. 30 league night recap

My Week 13 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Tonight was less of a case of the ball being bad and more one of “operator error.” I just couldn’t put two good shots together, and, when I finally did, a blower 7 greeted me. I am happy with my performance on “makeable” spares, and particularly single pins, but that latter category should have really been perfect, as I just went right of a 3 pin.

Result: 153-157-170=480
Average (39 games): 171
Average for last 9 games: 170
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 519

Team only took one point out of a match in which every game was decided by less than 30 pins. For my teammates, Berta was good again, and Brian was a pin shy of a 107 triplicate.

Alex Aguiar wins Ebonite NEBA Tournament of Champions

NEBA reported that Alex Aguiar claimed his tenth NEBA title Sunday in the Ebonite Tournament of Champions at AMF Lang’s Lanes in Cranston, RI. Alex, in convincing fashion, threw games of 277 and 267 to defeat Jon Van Hees in the two-game, total pinfall championship match by a score of 544-357. The posted standings and match play results also noted that Ed Roberts cashed in the tournament.

On Saturday, NEBA held a non-champions event, and, according to those results, Sean Richard, Dave Chalifoux, and Danny Khuu were the cashers who bowl in a league at Westgate Lanes. The event was won by Jim Bosse, who defeated Fero Williams, who was competing in his first NEBA tournament, 243-214 in the title match.

Nov. 27 league standings update

After taking one point from “Bowling Stones,” “Pinfall Wizards” stand in 6th place, 11 points off of the pace set by “The Mustangs.” The latter team, however, has lost most of their lead, and now stand just a half point ahead of “Outta Da Guttah,” with “The Incredibowls” just three points back in third place.

“The 5 G’s” (with Nick Gomes rejoining after the girlfriend of one of the bowlers on that team lost interest and quit) bowl against my team this week.

Nov. 23 league night recap

My Week 12 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My comment on BowlSK:

Chalk up tonight to stubbornly staying with a ball that seemed to lose its reaction and needed maintenance until it was too late to save the night, as my weaker Fast was better than the Hy-Road. The bright side was going 4/5 on my single 10 pin.

Result: 119-145-184=448
Average (36 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 169
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 522

Brian has a personal goal of having a better score than his wife at the end of a night, and he almost pulled it off tonight with a tie at a 396 series score (in which he had a 178 first game, which may have been his personal best). Carl and Pat were both well over average in the third game to help me secure the third game point, our only one of the night.

Cross-training #201

An Arizona sports blog reported that Zabian Dowdell, backup point guard for the Phoenix Suns, hosted a bowling event at the Phoenix Lucky Strike Lanes last night to raise money for the Association of Arizona Food Banks. Ironically, his team would have been scheduled to play the New Orleans Hornets and Chris Paul, a well-known celebrity bowler himself, if not for the NBA’s lockout.

Nov. 21 league standings update

First, with the team, the three points we won from “Dee’s Boys II” enabled us to climb back up to a tie for 5th with “Bottoms Up”, 12 points behind the pace set by “The Mustangs,” who are still 3.5 points ahead of “Outta Da Guttah.”

As far as the “Turkey Shoot” went, I won my division’s prize, as the bowlers in my division ahead of my scratch total typically needed 700s to match my +92 (Ed Godino III had the high series with a 687, but had a 204 average going in), and Berta won hers, having the high scratch series in her division with one of the lower averages in the division.

“Bowling Stones” is the next opponent on my team’s schedule.

AWBA site link added to sidebar

Being that they visit Westgate Lanes every few years for their national tournament, and wanting to support all kinds of bowlers, I found the site of the American Wheelchair Bowling Association back in June when they were at Westgate Lanes, but, at the time, it looked like it hadn’t been updated for some time; happily, it has (even noting Al Uttecht’s election to the USBC Hall of Fame), so I can now add the site to the sidebar (under the “Bowling Sites” category). 😀

Link to Mass. Women’s Bowling Association site added to sidebar

I’ve been searching for local association links for Bob Young to add to the Brockton association’s website when I came across an important site in the Google results: the women’s state association homepage. I didn’t have to think twice to add it to the sidebar list in the Local/New England category. FYI, the Foxvale women’s association will be hosting the women’s state tournament this season at North Bowl, so good luck to them in their effort to organize it.
