Apr. 24 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 34 bowling, frame-by-frame

I mostly struggled early, but when I did find my good ball and line, I reeled off five in a row for what was close to my high game for the season.

Result: 137-156-230=523
Average (93 games): 167
Average for last 9 games: 167
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 536

Composite average (102 games): 169

We had our full four, but Eric had to leave after two games because of a family emergency. We lost the first game big, but won the other two to split the points.

2018-19 Week 33 standings update

After failing to win points from Livin on a Spare, Let’s MixEm Up is in 14th place, 22 points behind Last Empire, who lead Stacked by three points, and Sweet Rolls, 10th Frame Magic, and Creeden’s Mustangs (our opponents tomorrow night) by nine points. This being the last week before the last position round of the second half, I’ll run down the leaders’ match-ups below:

  • Last Empire vs. Great Balls of Fire
  • Stacked vs. Livin on a Spare
  • Sweet Rolls vs. Tuckin’ Fenpin
  • 10th Frame Magic vs. 5 Spares

Si had the high scratch game and series in his division last week.

BowlingDigital link, RSS feeds restored

Seeing that BowlingDigital.com was still in operation, I’ve restored everything (link and RSS feeds) I had before, and, as a bonus, added their industry news feed.

The surprise was seeing a Facebook page plug-in available, and, after some experimentation, a feed of The Tenth Board Facebook page is now in the sidebar, so that blog readers who aren’t on Facebook can see what I post there. Hope everyone enjoys it. 🙂

UPDATE: Only one of the RSS feeds, the “Top Stories” one, was visible, and that one appeared out-of-date, so I’ve removed the RSS feeds, but the link to BowlingDigital.com remains in the bowling media sidebar list; after all, no one covers international bowling like BowlingDigital.com.

Apr. 17 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 33 bowling, frame-by-frame

Strikes were elusive after my turkey in the first game, but I did make most of the easy spares, with motivation actually involved in my single-pin miss to end the night. And what might have been my best shot of the night left a Westgate 7-10.

Result: 189-141-158=488
Average (90 games): 167
Average for last 9 games: 146
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 555

Composite average (99 games): 169

Eric was absent, and we won no points.

The BowlSK notes refer to a notable league event, which will be in the separate post that follows.

Sean Richard fires 290/838 in Spring Holiday Doubles; team shoots 558/1579

The real story of the BPUSBC Spring Holiday Doubles tournament yesterday came in the first squad, in which Sean Richard went 259-289-290 for an 838, which, with Jim Ferguson’s 227-246-268=741, was good for a 558 high team game and a 1,579 series, both of which will be reported to USBC headquarters.

There was one other score yesterday, a 290 bowled by Mike Morrissey. Good bowling to all! 🙂

Apr. 14 Sunday Niters recap

Eric, one of my Wednesday night teammates, gave me one last opportunity to sub on his Sunday night team, for which I was a regular member for a couple of years, last night.

My Week 30 bowling, frame-by-frame

My night was really made in the third game, when I made a drastic move out, and a subtle hand position change after leaving a couple of 10s led to a six-bagger to end the night.

Result: 164-159-211=534
Final average (9 games): 191

Composite average (96 games): 169

Team, with my help, won the third game by enough for total and four points, with Peter telling me they hadn’t won more than two points against our opponents all season.

Ethan Reyes, Corey Major win Mass. Pepsi tournament

According to the final scholarship list (PDF format) posted by the Mass. USBC youth committee, Westgate bowlers Ethan Reyes and Corey Major won their respective divisions of the state Pepsi tournament, held last Sunday at AMF Somerset Lanes. Along with their scholarships, the two have earned the right to compete at the Junior Gold Championships this summer in Detroit.

Congrats! 🙂

My Week 32 bowling, frame-by-frame

I was pleased to have a 183 triplicate alive after two, but it’s hard to score well when you fall off the virtual cliff, as I had no marks after the 5th frame in the third game.

Result: 183-183-126=492
Average (87 games): 167
Average for last 9 games: 149
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 539

Composite average (93 games): 169

With Si absent, we were assured of his average minus five bowling against the vacant. We barely lost the third game point, but won the other three.

The Northeast Amateur Tournament  reported on Facebook (must be logged in to view) that Shawn Hagan defeated Jim Ferguson, 255-254 (with handicap) in the title match of  yesterday’s “Throw the Low” event at Westgate Lanes. In this format, the bowlers bowled four games of qualifying, with the high three only counting toward the total. It was Hagan’s first NAT singles title.

Congrats also to Kevin Kelliher, who had a 297 in qualifying.

2018-19 Week 30 league standings update

After winning one point from Tuckin Fenpin, Let’s MixEm Up is in 14th place, 17 points behind Last Empire, who are four points ahead of Sweet Rolls, five ahead of Creeden’s Mustangs, and six ahead of Stacked. My team is scheduled to bowl against Great Balls of Fire tomorrow, but they’ll be without me, as I’ll be at a meeting for a project I’ve helped lay the groundwork for, some of which will be bowling-related.

Finalists of the NAT One-Ball Doubles event on Mar. 17 at Westgate Lanes (L-R): Champions Tom Hedding & Danny Khuu, runners-up Mike Macedo & Stephen Major (Photo courtesy of NAT)

The Northeast Amateur Tournament reported on Facebook (must be logged in to view linked page) that Tom Hedding & Danny Khuu defeated Mike Macedo & Stephen Major, 469-437 (with handicap),  to win the One-Ball Doubles event on Mar. 17 at Westgate Lanes.

The One-Ball format required the contestants to use one and the same ball for first ball and all spares during competition. The NAT has run singles events with the format in the past, but this was the first time they tried the format for a doubles event.
