Oct. 14 league standings update

After winning one point from “The Doables”, “Turkey Hunters” are now tied for 8th place with “The 508 Boys”, 4 1/2 points behind “Knock Em Down”, who lead “Bowling Stones” and “Striking Gentlemen” by a half point and “Ebony and Ivories” by a point and a half. “Anger Management” will be our opposition tomorrow night.

MyBowler.com added to sidebar links list

I rarely do consecutive administrivia posts, but today I also added a site I learned from through Mike Rose Jr., the 2007 USBC all-events champion (who I met around the time I returned to bowling when he was at Westgate Lanes for a NEBA tournament), via a Facebook post: MyBowler.com, which is a good, personalized bowling calendar site. Being also mainly geared toward allowing tournaments to promote themselves, I thought the “Tournaments” sidebar category was the best fit for this link.

Sidebar list for bowling videos & streaming added

With bowling’s trend toward “narrowcasting” over the web, I figured it was about time to have a list of sites and such that regularly do bowling streaming, as well as other bowling videos, and that list, named, of course, “Bowling Streaming/Videos”, is now in the sidebar. Of course, I moved Xtra Frame to that category, and also added a few other sites, one of the lesser-known ones being MichiganBowler.TV, with that being added mostly because they’ll do a live stream next month from the Miller High Life Scratch Challenge at Strikers East in New Hampshire.

Oct. 8 league night recap

My Week 6 bowling, frame-by-fram (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

On a night when scoring was low across the leagues, I was actually in play for over average after two games, but then the wheels came off the wagon in the last game, with a pocket 7-10 in the 9th frame of that game being the unkindest cut. In the second game, I couldn’t avoid 2-10 combinations, but struck out in the 10th to go over average in the game.

Result: 176-167-135=478
Average (18 games): 161
Average for last 9 games: 164
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 488

Team won only the first game, with my bad third game wasting Donald’s personal best one (148).

Brackets started a week late because of Shawn’s vacation with his family a few weeks ago, and I was fearful my second game last week cost me in those. However, I was in two finals, beating Jo-Ann (Coles) and Marsha Jones in those for a $5 profit on the night. The administrivia for this post will be me throwing up a link to the profit-loss sheet for this year in the “Author’s links” sidebar list.

Oct. 7 league standings update

After winning three of four from “Bowl Pack”, “Turkey Hunters” are now tied for 7th with “The Doables” (who we bowl against tomorrow night), four points behind “Striking Gentlemen”, who lead “The Incredibowls” by two points and “Knock em Down” by two and a half points.

Individually, I had the high scratch game and series in my average class last week, as well as the high handicap scores.

Vin D’Aleo throws 300 with son at Lanes & Games

I think everyone knows I’ll post about stuff Westgate bowlers do away from Westgate, and an instance of when I’ll do it happened last night, when Coke league bowler Vin D’Aleo threw a 300 game in the third game of his Thursday league at Lanes & Games in Cambridge. It was actually made even more memorable for him with his son, Michael, having bowled a perfect game earlier that night. Congrats to both! 😀

Oct. 1 league night recap

My Week 5 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Finally broke the deuce ice for the season tonight, but don’t ask me what happened in the second game.

Result: 201-137-183=521
Average (15 games): 162
Average for last 9 games: 164
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 498

My team got the better of a 3-1 split of the points. This was the first night of the five so far in which both Barry and I were over 500 for the night.

Quick night, as both teams had two vacancies, and a bowler was absent on the other team. There are still bowlers on the lanes in all three leagues (I’m guessing at the deaf league) as I post this.

Oct. 1 league standings update

After winning all four points from Team 16 last week, “Turkey Hunters” moved into a tie with them and “Bowl Pack” (who we bowl against tonight) for 7th place, three points behind “Striking Gentlemen”, who are a point ahead of “Bowling Stones” and “Ebony and Ivories”.

Individually, Barry had the second high handicap series for the men last week.

Link to USBC Bowling Academy added to sidebar

The USBC has recently launched their Bowling Academy site, replete with advice and video tips from Team USA and certified Gold level coaches. Being that this is an official USBC site, I had to add it to the sidebar (under the “Coaching/Tips” list). While there is a “premium” membership available, much of the content is free…an example of your USBC membership dues at work, which is why I shared it on the Brockton Bowling Association Facebook page first.

Fall 2014 Week 3 virtual league results

“Pin Seeking Missiles” won five of seven (2nd & 3rd games, and total) from “Triple x-X-x”, and moved back up to 4th place, three points behind the leading “The Whole 9 Yards”, who are now a half point ahead of “Wrecking Balls” and one ahead of “Probable Cause”.

The league saw its first individual honor score of the season in “sk8shorty01’s” 290 game.

Sept. 26 BowlSK edit note

It hit on me tonight that I might not have noted on the BowlSK sheet for my league night on Sept. 24, 2014 that I took a re-rack in the 2nd frame of the 2nd game prior to a strike in that frame, and I had wanted to, so I made the edit after confirming that I hadn’t made that note. The note can be instructional for some of you: It can pay to pay attention to how the pins are spotted in the full rack.

Sept. 24 league night recap

My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

By all rights, I should have gotten out of there with a 500 tonight, but three straight easy spare misses in the third game cost me that.

Result: 155-178-144=477
Average (12 games): 159
Average for last 9 games: 165
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 485

Barry had the best night on the pair tonight (570), and was the biggest reason my team won all four. He told me he couldn’t remember his last 200 game in Taunton (2nd game tonight was a 210).

Sept. 22 league standings update

After failing to win points from “We Split 4 No 1”, “Turkey Hunters” stand in a six-way tie for 10th, five points behind the leading “Lickety Splits”, who are a point ahead of “Ebony and Ivories” and Team 16 (our opponents Wednesday night), and two points ahead of “We Split 4 No 1”, “Striking Gentlemen”, and “Bowling Stones”.

Fall 2014 Week 2 virtual league results

“Pin Seeking Missiles” ended up winning only the first game from “The Whole 9 Yards” and now stand in a tie for 6th with Team 7, four points behind “8 Ain’t Enough”, who lead “Wrecking Balls” by a point and by two over “Probable Cause”.

Speaking of two of those leading teams, “Probable Cause” (Team members “bigcall”, “General Pounder”, “ijohn83”, and “vdubtx”) had a top 3 all-time game (972) and series (2672), and “8 Ain’t Enough” (Team members “Chuck”, “Mikestormbowler91”, “VampyreBowler”, and “Vic44”) also settled into 3rd all-time game (the aforementioned game by “Probable Cause” was 2nd all-time).

2014-15 Westgate Lanes house shot

I’m amazed that, in my 7+ years of writing this blog, this post will be a first. I actually had a chance to do what I’m about to do last year, but didn’t want to impose on Ray for his copy, but he did allow me to take it home to scan this year (I did promise I’d bring it back tomorrow). I am about to reveal the Westgate Lanes house shot for the season (click on image to display full-size):

House shot at Westgate Lanes for 2014-15 season
House shot at Westgate Lanes for 2014-15 season

If you’ve never seen one of these before, the important thing to remember is that blue = oil, and the deeper the blue, the more oil there is. This is probably typical as house shots go, with a ratio of 8:1, though I’ve seen house shots in the 10:1 to 15:1 range. The ratio is just a measure of how much friction is available on the outside, and the smaller the ratio, the less of it there is. A “challenge” shot that the Coke league might be on is more on the order of 5:1, and any pattern 3:1 or less is considered USBC Sport Bowling-compliant.

Youth program dates of importance posted: When I picked up the pro shop’s copy of the house shot tonight, I also saw on the bulletin board that dates of importance for the youth program, such as Adult/Junior doubles tournaments, travel league dates at Westgate, etc., have been posted. I’ve jotted them down and added them to my calendar. Remember, the full calendar is linked in the “Local/New England” sidebar list, and events will eventually appear in the “Upcoming Events” list in the sidebar as they approach.

Sept. 17 tournament notes

Just a couple of items I picked up tonight:

  • Devon McGregor will run his next Eliminator on Oct. 19, with squad times at 10 AM and 12:30 PM.
  • The Junior Bowling Challenge, a youth tournament series that started at AMF Auburn Lanes, will be coming to Westgate Lanes, also on Oct. 19, at 2 PM. Kevin Thibeault has bowled this, and you can visit him in the pro shop for more details.

Both tournaments have been added to the blog’s calendar.

Sept. 17 league night recap

My Week 3 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

The second game was my undoing tonight, as it became a “strike or nothing” game with a whole lot of nothing between the strikes. I didn’t help myself missing consecutive 7 pins on the same lane in that game, however.

Result: 172-141-171=484
Average (9 games): 159
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 482

The other team got a solid night from their anchor, who I want to say was clean until the very last frame, and won all four.

Sept. 11 CATS training note

Ray in the pro shop has announced that Larry Lichstein will be at Westgate Lanes with the CATS system on Sept. 15th (this coming Monday) through the 21st, and again Oct. 4th through the 12th. As a special, if you schedule a two-hour full lesson for either period, it will be discounted $40 to $120 (regularly $160). Appointments can be made with Ray in the pro shop.
