The other teams in the top three have already been noted in my last recap, but I did want to note that Jim had the second high scratch game of the week this week (259). We bowl against Tobman Insurance in the coming week.
Stephen Major bowls first 300 in Adult/Junior
No sooner did Stephen Major get home from the Junior Gold tournament in Buffalo than, on his first league night since, he bowls his first 300 game, in the Adult/Junior league. Congrats buddy! 😀
Sean Richard also managed to capture the final two strikes of the game, and the video is embedded below.
July 23 league night recap
My Week 10 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
Lou spotted a probable flaw in my form in the third game, suggesting I try to stay lower at the foul line. I kept that in mind, and made some better shots after he told me, but had some bad breaks on stone 7s. I’ve had much better nights on my single pins, as well, mostly butchering my 10, but missing a couple of others, as well.
Result: 187-180-150=517
Average (30 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 177
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 555
Team took it on the chin, losing all eight, but Team 5 also lost all eight. Team 1 did win all eight, so our lead is two points over Team 1. The next standings update, if needed, will note other teams moving near the lead after tonight.
Long-time BBA manager Robert J. Young dead at 72
The Brockton Bowling Association has already announced it on our Facebook page, but I decided to wait on the Enterprise posting to note here the passing Sunday of association Hall of Famer, and long-time secretary and manager for the association, Robert J. “Bob” Young. Among his many bowling accomplishments, he was notably the first bowler with a perfect 300 game at Westgate Lanes (and in the association), as well as, as his bio page on the association website shows, the first 200 average in the association. Also, in addition to his duties in the local association, Bob was manager of the Massachusetts state association.
I need to say that it was Bob who recommended me for the board after I came forward with the offer to start the Facebook page, and all I’ll say is that I hope to continue to serve the association with the same dedication Bob showed.
Link to Bay State Open added to sidebar
I got wind of a new tournament, called the Bay State Open, on Facebook, and, now that I know that they have a website, I threw the link to it on the sidebar under the “Local/New England” links category. Zach Thompson, the tournament director, was bowling in the Coke league toward the tail end of last season, so I want to wish him the best in this endeavor. 🙂
EDIT: Zach told me they’ve booked Westgate for Oct. 18, so that date has been placed on the calendar.
Stephen Major posts top 100 finish in Junior Gold Survivor
There are plenty of side events at the Junior Gold national tournament, and one of those was a “Survivor” tournament for those who did not make the first cut. As evidenced here, Stephen Major placed 93rd out of 585 boys in the Survivor tournament, which, I’m told, is good enough for not only scholarship money, but also a paid entry into next year’s Junior Gold tournament, to be held in Chicago. WTG Stephen! 😀
July 18 league standings update
After winning six points from “Lucky Thirteens”, “It’s Jim’s Fault” now leads Team 5 by eight points and Team 1 by ten. Team 2 are our opponents next week.
Individually, Jim had the high scratch game (245, tied with Tony Attardo and Don Nelson) and series (716) for the men last week. As a team, we had the second high scratch series.
Thibeault finishes in top 100 at Junior Gold; appears on BowlTV
The posted standings after the first advancers round showed that Kevin Thibeault placed 99th (out of nearly 1,100 entries) with a 194+ average for the 20 games bowled. Kevin also bowled his fourth game this morning for the BowlTV live stream, which I’ll embed below:
Congrats Kevin! 😀
Kevin Thibeault makes first cut at 2014 Junior Gold
According to the posted standings after qualifying on Bowl.com, Kevin Thibeault, as he did last year, has made the first cut (in 137th position) in the under-20 boys division at the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships this week in Buffalo, NY. I will list the other New England bowlers who made the cut in the tournament, by division, below:
U20 boys
Bryan Bourget (Woonsocket, RI)
Tyler Perry (New Bedford, MA)
Qwadaris Rembert (Providence, RI)
U20 girls
Jadee Scott-Jones (E. Providence, RI)
U15 boys
Nicholas Flake (Pomfret Ctr., CT)
Tom Hankey (Great Barrington, MA)
U15 girls
Jewel Dumond (Pawtucket, RI)
U12 girls
Madison Gentes (Manchester, NH)
Congrats to everyone, and good luck & good bowling the rest of the way! 😀
July 16 league night recap
My Week 9 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
The takeaway tonight was the third game, with the turkey in the middle helping me avoid the letdown I’ve been having in that game recently. I could not get lined up on my single 7 until the third game, or this could have been better.
Result: 194-178-179=551
Average (27 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 180
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 544
Mirroring the team’s recent trend, we lost the first game, then won the other two and total comfortably. The teams immediately in back of us all had bad nights, as well, so we probably widened our lead.
July 11 league standings update
As we expected, “It’s Jim’s Fault” moved back in front of Team 5 by two points, with Team 1, who was bowling against Team 5 this week, eight points behind us in third. “Lucky Thirteens” will be our opponents next week, and they are 11 points behind us.
Individually, Jim, with a 688, had the high scratch series this week.
Brian Egan throws perfecto in Adult/Junior
Brian Egan told me once that he thought he’d never carry 12 strikes at Westgate Lanes, but he did it tonight in the Adult/Junior league. Congrats buddy! 😀

Congrats to all of the women’s state champions! 😀
2014 Mass. state open tournament results
The open state tournament results posted on the website of the Greater Lowell Bowling Association are still in an unofficial state, but I’ve received word that checks from the tournament have been sent out, and I will try to deduce the state champions from the posted unofficial results, with the champions given below (champions with Brockton Bowling Association bowlers involved will be noted with an *):

Congrats to all of this year’s state champions! 😀
July 9 league night recap
My Week 8 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
Always a bad one in the bunch, it seems, and, lately, the bad one has been third game.
Result: 202-186-145=533
Average (24 games): 174
Average for last 9 games: 180
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 540
Team won first two games and total again; we had a view of the first place team’s match, and, as near as we could tell, they only won two points, so tonight should have put us back in the lead by two.
Arsenal GIF updated
Just a quick note…I have updated the GIF with my arsenal to include the IQ Tour Fusion, and dropped the Hy-Road from the rotation. The latter ball may come out of “retirement” down the line, but I’m studying my options with the surface (I had noted a loss of back-end motion even after its latest cleaning and polishing.).
July 5 league standings update
After winning six points from “Budweiser”, “It’s Jim’s Fault” still fell behind Team 5 to second place by two points, with “Lucky Thirteens” seven points behind us in third. Team 10 will be our opponents next week.
Individually, Eileen had the women’s second high scratch series this week.
7th anniversary post
This post is coming a few days after the day I usually do it on (June 30, the day of the bowling outing with my brother that started my comeback to competitive bowling), but, where my first post to this blog was on a July 4, it falls within the “in time” range for my anniversary posts.
All I really want to say this year is that I continue to be blessed with the bowling events I get to post about here, including a couple of state records (Tyler Perry’s youth record, and Jim Lovewell’s adult state record), a couple of records in the state tournament (the singles record, and the doubles record falling twice in one weekend), and, certainly not least, Ed Roberts and Alex Aguiar’s 600 doubles game in my city tournament in April.
Thank you to the usual, and I hope to be able to make an announcement here within the next week or two.
July 2 league night recap
My Week 7 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
Third game had a “woulda, coulda, shoulda” feel to it, b/c it was possibly in the 180s with better spare shooting, but I’ll take the high game of the summer so far, the second game.
Result: 184-216-141=541
Average (21 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 189
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 524
Team won first two games, but then had to hang on for total by three pins, with Jim needing, and getting, two strikes in the 10th third game to save total.
June 28 league standings update
After winning two points from Team 1, “It’s Jim’s Fault” fell into a tie for the lead with Team 5 (whom we split 4-4 with to start the season), with “Lucky Thirteens” three points behind in third. We bowl “Budweiser” in the coming week.
Shawn Hagan throws perfecto in Lilac City
Congrats to Coke league bowler Shawn Hagan, who threw a 300 game today in the well-known Lilac City tournament at AMF Terrace Gardens Lanes in Rochester, NY. It is the second perfect game (that I know of) that Shawn has thrown in the current USBC year. 😀
Kevin Thibeault throws 300 in Adult/Junior
Congrats to Kevin Thibeault on a 300 game tonight in the Adult/Junior league. I want to say this is his last league as a youth-eligible bowler, so anything he shoots until the league ends in August will be his last youth honor scores.
June 25 league night recap
My Week 6 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
Tonight’s highlight for me was definitely the first game, in which I saved what might have been a disaster by first converting the 4-10, and then running the next five strikes for a 206. I still can’t help but think it could have been better with better spare shooting, however.
Result: 206-173-171=550
Average (18 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 185
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 522
The team lost points for the first time in four weeks tonight; indeed, it was our first losing night of the season, as we only won the first game.
June 25 eliminator tournament note
I need to note that Devon McGregor has decided to add a second qualifying squad to his eliminator tournament, and, as a result, the tournament on Aug. 24 will now begin at 10 AM. The calendar has been updated to reflect the change (but it may take some time for the change to appear).
Strikeability.com added to sidebar links
Once again, hanging on the BowlingCommunity.com forums has yielded a useful link, this time Strikeability.com, which is the website of well-known bowling coach Susie Minshew, who has written for Bowling This Month. One of the forum members recently had an in-person lesson with her that helped him get his first sanctioned 800 series, but the “Learn” section of her site has many mini-tips for your game.
The link has been added to the sidebar, in the “Coaching/Tips” list.
June 21 league standings update
After winning all eight from “Shake ‘N Bake”, “It’s Jim’s Fault” now leads by five points over “Lucky Thirteens” and by six over Team 5. We will be bowling against Team 1 in the coming week. Also, although none of us individually were in the top two, we did have the high scratch team game and series this week, and both the game and series are second best scratch on the season.
June 2014 People’s Tournament results
The People’s Tournament reported Ryan O’Grady (AMF Cranston Lanes, 174 avg.) as the winner of the June 1 tournament at Westgate Lanes, defeating Robert Dacri (AMF Auburn Lanes, 161 avg.) by a score of 231-199 (with handicap). Kris Higgins (3rd place, 206 avg.), Tina Gannon (215 avg.), Phil Spera (172 avg.), and Mike Major (208 avg.) were the Westgate Lanes cashers.
June 18 league night recap
My Week 5 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
What could be said for tonight was that things were more or less together, for a change. I’d probably would like the 10 pin misses in the third game back, but I had enough strikes to cover for my mistakes, with the result being three deuce games. 😀
Result: 200-211-203=614
Average (15 games): 170
Average for last 9 games: 181
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 517
Jim was absent again, but a bowler on the other team was, as well, so it was a wash. The three of us present all had over-average nights, with Lou leading the way with a 701. Team won all eight for the third week in a row.
Westgate Lanes to host handicap eliminator on Aug. 24
Westgate Lanes will host a handicap eliminator singles tournament on Sun. Aug. 24 at 1:00 PM. Bowlers wishing to obtain details should either call Devon McGregor at 617-201-5569 or email devonmcg_at_msn_dot_com. The tournament has been added to the calendar.
June 13 league standings update
After winning all eight points from Team 9, “It’s Jim’s Fault” leads by four points over “Ghetto Stars” and by five over “Lucky Thirteens”. “Shake ‘N Bake” will be our opponents next week.
