My spare game wasn’t quite where it needed to be tonight, but I was better on first ball tonight, so, overall, it was a step in the right direction. I had two games over average and was just under in the other game, but, on my league’s “Turkey Shoot” night (cash prize for most over average in each division), I don’t think I was enough over average (though it was my third such night this season to date) to win men’s “B”. I might be OK for brackets, however.
Result: 181-163-194=538 Average (36 games): 171 Average for last 9 games: 164 Next week’s AVG+1 score: 528
Team lost the first two games by over 100 pins each, but we did win the third game by over 100.
There is a lack of a published report about this tournament, but Danny Khuu did state on his Facebook timeline that he was one of the cashers in this year’s Miller High Life Scratch Challenge at Strikers East in Raymond, NH. The tournament, part of a weekend benefiting the High Hopes Foundation, attracted several PBA Hall of Famers, probably the best-known names being Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Parker Bohn III. The only other information, which I’ll add to by way of comment when available, was that John Furey was the winner.
BowlingDigital.com reported that Ed Roberts, the lone American in the field, cruised to a 145 pin victory over Dave Montgomery of England in the round-robin finals of the Rock Masters senior tournament at King’s Bowl in Gibraltar. Roberts averaged 236+ in his best eight-game qualifying squad (Under the rules of the tournament, for seniors, an age bonus of a pin for every year over 50 was given.) and continued his best form the rest of the way. Angie Brown of England dominated the women’s field in similar fashion.
After winning just one point from “Anger Management”, “Crazy Eights” are officially last (other than the vacant), a half-point behind “Nucking Futs” and 15 points behind the leaders, Team 16. Team 16 leads “Anger Management” by 2.5 points and “The Mustangs” by three. “The Doables” bowl against my team tomorrow night.
Individually, Pat had the high handicap game in the men’s “C” division last week.
“X-Factors” won only the third game in the scheduled rematch with “Professional Amateurs”, but the good news in the results was that “5 Fingers of Destruction” lost all seven, while “All Balls On Deck” won five to leapfrog over the former two teams for the lead, with the tie for second only two points behind.
The mentioned third game happened to be the high team game of the week in the league. 😀
BowlingCoupons.com is an offshoot of the Kids Bowl Free site which allows users to register to receive coupon deals at participating bowling centers (Westgate Lanes being one of them) by email. With my home center participating, it was only natural to include the site in the sidebar, in the general “Bowling Sites” category.
As posted by the Greater Lowell Bowling Association (link is to Word document), Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Ed Roberts was Division A champion of the recently-concluded Massachusetts state senior tournament at Brunswick Lowell Lanes, averaging 240+ for the six games. It’s probably not a wild one, but I’m guessing that this is not the first time Ed has won at the state senior tournament. 😉
I thought to try a weaker ball tonight (my Fast), and it seemed to work well, as when I was dead in the pocket, it usually carried, but I’m still struggling with inconsistency. I think I did pick up on how one of my opponents was releasing the ball, and that helped me at the end of the third game. A bright spot: Missing only one of 12 single pins (the miss was a 4 that I left outside of my mark).
Result: 151-144-172=467 Average (33 games): 170 Average for last 9 games: 159 Next week’s AVG+1 score: 514
Team won the first game, and we were only down two pins for total after two games, but couldn’t win the third.
After failing to win points from “The Dynasty Is Back”, “Crazy Eights” fell into a tie for 14th place with “WTF Over”, 13 points behind Team 16, who are 2 1/2 points ahead of “Anger Management” and three points ahead of “The Mustangs”. Due to a shift in the schedule because of teams being added to the league, we bowl “Anger Management” for a second time in the first half tomorrrow night.
Tri-City raffle note: The Tri-City WBA will run their annual Christmas dinner basket raffle (the basket includes a supermarket gift card for the ham or turkey) from Nov. 17 to Dec. 17 (drawing on the last day), and will benefit the Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL). Tickets are $1 each, and can be purchased from any Tri-City board member or at the desk (For the Kingston bowlers reading this, raffle tickets will also be available at the desk there.).
I’ve been missing posting this, but I did want to note that, through Thursday, PBA Hall of Famer Larry “The King” Lichstein will be at Westgate Lanes for meet-and-greets and lessons, so if you can swing time off for lessons this week, you may want to do so. 🙂
“X-Factors” won five of seven from “Off Constantly”, but the team we were tied with for first going into the week, “5 Fingers of Destruction”, won all seven from “Professional Amateurs”, so we’re now two points behind the lead, but still in second, a point ahead of “All Balls On Deck”. The top three are getting some separation in the standings, because the next closest teams are six points behind third.
NEBA reported that Steve Wagoner won his second career NEBA title, which was also his second of the year, this past weekend at Westgate Lanes, defeating Rich Fulton, of Westgate Lanes, by a score of 244-228 in the title match. Other Westgate Lanes bowlers cashing, as reported in the match play results, were Gino Beniamino, Danny Khuu, Ryan Yelle, Jim Ferguson, Brian Egan, Bill Briggs, Tim Major, and Eric Durden.
There were two honor scores posted in the open tournament, both 11 in a row games in the 12:30 squad yesterday: Frankie Calca with a 299, and Tony Reynaud with a 290.
Congratulations to Tony Reynaud on winning today’s senior NEBA event at Westgate Lanes, defeating John Camara 238-200 in the title match. I thought this tournament might have also been on the pattern chosen for the open tournament, but the senior tournament was on the Westgate Lanes house shot. Tony’s photo is on NEBA’s Facebook page, for anyone interested.
There were also two perfect games thrown in the senior tournament, one by John Kirker during qualifying and the other by Ralph Dahlgren during match play. I missed getting video of Kirker’s 300, but I did get Dahlgren’s, which is below:
As for the first squad of the open tournament, there weren’t any scores that were too crazy, but I believe Rich Fulton and Brian Egan from Westgate Lanes made the squad cut, so they’ll be back tomorrow for match play. Good work, guys! 😀
My 665 third week is starting to look like “fool’s gold”, because I haven’t really had a decent week since. The only thing I could seem to do right consistently tonight was make the 4-5, and I had the leave twice, once with the 7 pin in it, as well (I managed to make that one). About the only thing I haven’t tried is my weaker balls straighter, but I don’t know when I’m going to be able to get practice time before next Wednesday.
Result: 170-152-156=478 Average (30 games): 172 Average for last 9 games: 165 Next week’s AVG+1 score: 534
It was another week with no points. With Carl absent, Berta and Pat were the only ones on the team with a game over average. One of my opponents did mention at the end of the night that the lanes seemed tough, so perhaps I’m being too tough on myself.
After losing all four points last week to “WTF Over”, “Crazy Eights” dropped to 13th place, 10 points behind the leading Team 16, who are two points ahead of “The Doables”. “The Dynasty Is Back” will be tonight’s opponents.
NEBA tournament note: I forgot to mention that NEBA will have a senior (50 & over) tournament on Saturday afternoon before the regular 6:30 squad. It should be on the same lane condition as the open tournament.
Junior Professionals note: Planning is already underway for our second tournament, tentatively scheduled for Mar. 23, again at Westgate Lanes. We’ll be working on some new stuff, so stay tuned!
NEBA announced on their website that the lane condition for this weekend’s event at Westgate Lanes will be the Kegel “Route 66” pattern. Celebrating their 50th anniversary, NEBA has set a $50 entry fee for this tournament, so we at Westgate Lanes hope there’s a good turnout for this tournament. 😀
“X-Factors” won five of the possible seven points from “2 Lazy 2 Choose” to start the second half of the virtual league season, and are now tied with “5 Fingers of Destruction” for the lead, with “All Balls On Deck” just a point behind in third.
Individually, “sk8shorty01”, a member of “Professional Amateurs”, submitted a 300 game last week.
Before I go into the results, I’d like to say as a member of the Junior Professionals Tournament committee that the tournament was a learning experience for all of us. We’d like to do this again, and will bear in mind what we’ve learned today to make the next tournament better.
Now, the results (scores in the handicap division are with handicap unless noted as scratch):
Handicap Division

Special congratulations to Tiler Levesque, who threw his first 300 game in the first game of the match play portion of the tournament.
Congratulations to all who won prizes, and to Tiler again! Thanks again to Ebonite International for sponsoring the tournament. 😀
I’ve become aware of a new URL for Lane Masters (bowling ball maker), so that company’s sidebar link has been updated. I think the site only features new Lane Masters balls, but buzz is that they may bring back the Legends brand, as well.
Congrats to Rob Dickens, who had his first career 300 game tonight in the Westgate Mixed league. You will know Rob as one of my earliest new bowling friends in my return to league bowling, a summer league teammate a couple of times, and we’ve also had the pleasure of bowling together a few other times in various settings (including bowling on the same pair in People’s Tournament qualifying). Rob, you deserved this one, buddy! 😀
I was all over the place tonight; I had a double in each game, but there were just too many bad shots otherwise. I don’t want to make it an excuse, but more than a few of us in the building may have been a bit distracted by what was going to take place in the World Series at Fenway Park tonight.
Result: 170-164-156=490 Average (27 games): 173 Average for last 9 games: 168 Next week’s AVG+1 score: 523
Pat was the only one of us over average in all three games en route to losing all four points.
In brackets last week, I did manage to make it through one bracket, beating Ed Godino Jr. (the father) for the break-even $5.
I also did want to note here that, because we didn’t have the table space at our pair (23 & 24), I left my laptop at home and, instead, did my BowlSK stuff on my smartphone. I was using the site in the Dolphin Browser Android app, and a lot of it seemed in many ways easier than using my laptop. This was especially true at the end of the night, because I could just sign out of the site, close the browser, and I could leave my phone on. I’ll probably be leaving feedback on the site with the developer (whom I know online) to let him know I had a smooth experience.
File photo of Westgate Lanes youth team (L-R: Chris Silveri, Kevin Thibeault, Nick Sauve, Stephen Major, coach Steve Hamilton)
I previously reported on Kevin Thibeault’s 300 game on March 16, but little did I know how big the day really was…Marcia first brought it to my attention, and I was sitting on it until I saw a news article about it on bowl.com, but with the bowlers involved having already been recognized for it at the center, I thought I’d go ahead with it now:
One of the leaderboards on bowl.com shows that the bowlers that form one of the travel league teams (file photo of the team above) rolled what turned out to be the high series of the 2012-13 season in the nation for a team of their age group and playing strength (four-man, ages 17-20, as determined by the age of the oldest bowler) on the day I mentioned in the youth league at Westgate Lanes, doing so with games of 1,037, 942, and 945 for a three-game total of 2,924. In the first game, Kevin Thibeault’s 300 game was joined by a 289 game by Nick Sauve, with Stephen Major also throwing a 235 and Chris Silveri a 213. Kevin had the high series on the team that day with a 760, followed by Stephen Major’s 743, Nick Sauve’s 732, and Chris Silveri’s 689.
It should also be noted that the 1,037 game was also the second highest in the nation, bettered only by Island Tree Varsity of Levittown, NY, who threw a 1,054 game on Jan. 21.
My formal congratulations to this team on this achievement. 😀
Note: This article was also filed in the “Honor Scores” category due to the nature of the post.
After splitting 2-2 with “Sweet Rolls”, “Crazy Eights” sit in a tie for 8th place with “3 Plus 2”, seven points behind the leaders, Team 16, who are leading “The Doables” by a point. Tonight’s opposition for my team is “WTF Over”.
I thought the look and feel of this blog was getting stale, and I wanted a fresh look but not too radical a change. I saw that the theme, “Contempt”, was a more professional version of the “Kubrick” theme I’d been using. I’d lose the header graphic with this theme, but, at the same time, I would gain the ability to have the sidebar on all posts and pages, which was what I really wanted. The new theme has been activated and will be the theme for the foreseeable future. I hope everyone likes it; you can give me feedback on the “Contact Rich” page. 🙂
EDIT: My comments to this post note some of the other changes I made, but a big one, one that I hope improves user involvement, is the inclusion of a “User links” widget in the sidebar, enabling the user to register on WordPress.com (if they don’t already have an account), log in, or subscribe to the RSS feeds for posts and comments. There is also a link to the main WordPress.com page. Remember, you can also comment on posts right on the blog by logging into your Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ account from the post you wish to comment on.
If I didn’t mention the correction earlier, my virtual team, “X-Factors”, actually “bowled” against “Off Constantly” last week in the first position round, and my team won all seven points, enabling us to climb into 3rd and only a point behind “Turkey Hunters” and “All Balls On Deck” for first.
Individually, “Joe Bowler”, a member of “5 Fingers of Destruction”, submitted a 299 game last week.
Three missed singles (but only one of those was a 10) in the first game hurt, but hurray for putting it together later, because I only had one split open in each of the other two.
Result: 150-175-200=525 Average (24 games): 175 Average for last 9 games: 169 Next week’s AVG+1 score: 545
My strong ending was important, as it enabled us to win the third game by enough to win total by three pins.
After winning all four against the vacant team, “Crazy Eights” are now in a tie for 6th with “The Dynasty Is Back”, “Mustangs”, and “3’s Company”. This logjam is 5 1/2 points in back of “Anger Management”, who are a half point in front of Team 16 and “The Doables”. Tomorrow night, my team bowls a team I always look forward to bowling, win or lose: “Sweet Rolls”, Shawn’s team.
Individually, Carl had the high scratch game and series of the week in men’s “C”.
