Fall 2013 Week 7 virtual league results

“X-Factors” won five of seven points from “5 Fingers of Destruction”, but the standings are interesting heading into the first of two position weeks: We are just six points behind the leading “All Balls On Deck”, but in a three-way tie for 5th with last week’s opponents and “Off Constantly”, and we sort by scratch pins into the bottom match with “2 Lazy 2 Choose”. “All Balls On Deck” is three points ahead of both “Professional Amateurs” and “Turkey Hunters”, and will “bowl” against “Professional Amateurs” this week.

Oct. 16 league night recap

My Week 7 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

This was another night where I couldn’t put much together. For the most part, I was still making everything…everything except the 10 pin, that is, which I missed four times (while still making more than I missed). In fact, I fared better when there was more than one pin on the deck.

Result: 183-165-157=505
Average (21 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 169
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 542

Team ended up doing enough to win all four from the vacant, with Carl doing most of the “heavy lifting”.

Kevin Thibeault throws perfecto in Gardner; Stephen Major makes “Big 4”

Congrats to Kevin Thibeault on a 300 game in the eight-game marathon Sunday at Gardner Ten Pin, a sanctioned adult tournament for which he signed a waiver to compete in. I was told they had Kegel’s “Route 66” pattern out for the tournament.

Also, Stephen Major told me last night that he converted the “Big Four” (4-6-7-10) while competing for Westgate Lanes in the youth travel league at Wonder Bowl. 😀

Oct. 15 league standings update

After failing to win points from “Spare Me”, “Crazy Eights” fell to a tie for 11th with “Bowling Stones” and “3 Plus 2”, eight points behind the leading Team 16, who are a point and a half in front of “Anger Management” and two ahead of “Split Happens”. My team has the vacant tomorrow night; to review the league’s vacant team rule, we’d just have to bowl within 50 pins of our team average to win the point each game.

Fall 2013 Week 6 virtual league results

“X-Factors” lost all seven points to “All Balls On Deck”, the first place team, and we’re now 11 points behind them in 5th place. First place is six points ahead of “Off Constantly”, the second place team.

Individually, “Fin09” of “Off Constantly” had his second honor score of the league, an 819 series that was the second highest individual series recorded in the virtual league.

Oct. 12 practice

With the exception of last week, I’ve been able to get into a regular Saturday morning practice routine (bowling by the desk while the kids are bowling closer to the high end of the house). My feet are usually an issue in the morning, but they felt better this morning, and I’m happy to say my practice session today didn’t feel like I was wasting my time. After my “throwaway” first game, I was able to put some good shots together and average around 200 (with a clean 211 second game), and what started as wanting to see what my Nano could actually do on the house shot ended up being work on footwork and swing plane, because I was able to get the Hy-Road to the pocket after paying attention to those physical game points.

Sept. 2013 People’s Tournament results

The People’s Tournament reported Michael Reed (Boston Bowl, 175 avg.) as the winner of the event held on Sept. 15 at Westgate Lanes, defeating Dale Doody (Bradley Bowl {CT}, 181 avg.) by a score of 225-197 (with handicap) in the final match. Westgate Lanes cashers were Paris Cook (203 avg.), Linwood Cowen Jr. (171 avg.), and Al Chorney (180 avg.); if I haven’t mentioned it before, I’m happy to say Al Chorney is a bowler in my league. 😀

The People’s Tournament also announced that the December tournament on the 14th & 15th of that month will feature a guaranteed $20,000 first prize. Westgate Lanes has been running $10 sweepers into this tournament on many league nights, so you may have a chance to win an entry into this tournament through your league. 🙂

Brunswick to run demo days in November

Brunswick, in conjunction with USA Pro Shop, will be conducting a series of demo days at Westgate Lanes on Nov. 14 through 18, with the schedule below:

  • Nov. 14: 6 PM to 10 PM
  • Nov. 15: 6 PM to 10 PM
  • Nov. 16: 10 AM to 5 PM
  • Nov. 17: Noon to 5 PM
  • Nov. 18: 6 PM to 8 PM

Demo balls of the latest offerings from Brunswick, as well as their subsidiary companies, DV8 and Radical, will be available to try free during open bowling, league practice, or league play. Interested bowlers may see Ray DiSanto in the pro shop for more information.

FYI, there will be a bowling celebrity on hand for these; I will only say that I’ve blogged about his visits before. 😉

Oct. 9 league night recap

My Week 6 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I really bowled better than my score tonight; I just couldn’t avoid 9 third game, and missed more than my share of the resulting single pins. My assessment of the night was confirmed by my opponents, who all said I deserved better.

Result: 189-168-137=494
Average (18 games): 176
Average for last 9 games: 173
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 540

First game was close, but that was all that could be said for my team tonight, as we lost all four.

In brackets last week, I made it through three of them, losing two to Shawn and one to Liz, but the $2 for coming in second in each meant I turned a dollar profit on the week.

Chris Major throws 11 in a row 290 in His & Hers

Congrats to Chris Major on her 11 in a row 290 game tonight in the His & Hers league, and it’s been posted on the Brockton Bowling Association Facebook page; as some of you are aware, I’ve been gradually shading the page to include news about the women and youth bowlers in the association’s centers. 😀

EDIT: Chris’s first two games were a 234 and a 193 for a 717 set. Congrats again! 😀

Oct. 8 league standings update

After winning three of the four points from “We Split 4 No 1”, “Crazy Eights” are now tied with that team and “3 Plus 2” for 7th place, five points behind a tie for the lead between “Split Happens” and Team 16, with “The Doables” a point behind them. “Spare Me” will be my team’s opposition tomorrow night.

Oct. 2 league night recap

My Week 5 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

It was another night of grinding out spares…I just wasn’t as successful at it third game as I have been.

Result: 181-187-157=525
Average (15 games): 178
Average for last 9 games: 192
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 539

Making spares was enough for my team to get the first two games and total. I was also the high man on the night on the pair.

Sept. 28 league standings update

After taking a lone point from “The Incredibowls”, “Crazy Eights” stand in 10th place, five points in back of a tie between “Split Happens” and Team 16. The leaders are a point in front of “The Dynasty Is Back” and “The Doables”. My team faces “We Split 4 No 1” in the coming week.

Sept. 28 practice

I was able to get up to the alley again this morning to practice, but my left foot was balkier than usual, so I give my first game a pass. As I was leaving plenty of spares, I was able to work on improving getting lined up on my left side (the miss of the 7 the other night was worse than usual), and I think I succeeded; just so I could get some work on my 7, I even intentionally went after only the 7 on a 1-2-7 leave I had. I’m hoping today’s spare work pays dividends down the line.

Sept. 25 league night recap

My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

This was an over-average night that felt more like I was managing a bad night. I had a better night on my multi-pin spares tonight, and that was what really saved me.

Result: 180-176-187=543
Average (12 games): 179
Average for last 9 games: 183
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 542

Much of our opponents’ (and it turned out to be “The Incredibowls”, after all) night was Ken Snow putting up a 630, with my team only winning the second game.

Sept. 24 league standings update

After winning all four from “SR Spares”, “Crazy Eights” stand in a tie for 6th (out of 17 teams now) with “WTF Over” and “Sweet Rolls”, five points behind “The Doables”, who sit three in front of a tie between “The Dynasty Is Back” (yes, that team), “Split Happens”, and Team #16. My team bowls against the aforementioned “The Doables” tomorrow night.

Individually, my 259 and 665 would have been in second in even the men’s “A” division (naturally, it was high in the “B” division), and Brian won everything except for scratch series for the week in the men’s “C” division.

Sept. 21 tournament notes

A couple of notes about upcoming state association tournaments:

  • The 2013 Massachusetts state senior tournament, open to bowlers age 50 and over, will take place at Brunswick Lowell Lanes on Oct. 26 and 27, with mail-in entries closing Oct. 25. More information and an entry form is available on the Greater Lowell Bowling Association’s website.
  • The Mass. USBC Youth Association’s annual singles tournament, with handicap and scratch divisions for boys and girls, will take place on Nov. 10 at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford. Entries close on Oct. 14, with an entry form available here.

Sept. 21 practice

Trying to establish a practice routine (sort of), I went today while the kids were bowling, using some of the time before practice to go over stuff for the Junior Professionals Tournament with Stephen Major and his mother (Chris). The practice itself was rather pedestrian, as it seemed the only thing I could do right was make my 10 pin (and even then I missed one of them), leaving more clusters and buckets than I care to remember. An average practice session may have nothing to do whatsoever with how I perform in league, as my 665 the other night followed a rather mediocre session in its own right.

“LongLiveBowling” added to sidebar

It may appear to be just another online pro shop, but “LongLiveBowling” is owned by USBC Gold level coach Sean Klug, who happens to be one of the first Gold level coaches as well as a former member of the Team USA coaching staff. What Sean will do on his site is pretty neat: He will answer any bowling question you submit on his site, and all for free. It was this that had me decide to add it to the sidebar, but I saw it as a fit in the “Other Equipment Sites” category; just bear in mind his offer to answer any bowling question you have.
