Kind of an up and down practice session today, as the title of this post indicates. I had a clean 224 in my first game, but then it was downhill from there, a good deal of it because I was missing a lot of corner pins, especially the 10 pin. I think I’m going to devote the entire practice next week to just shooting corner pins, as those have been hurting my league performances, as well.

I started "The Tenth Board" to chronicle my experiences during the road back to league bowling after my heel fractures in 1999 (it took me 7 years before I started thinking seriously about it). I now use the blog as a combination of a personal bowling journal and a news site mostly about Westgate Lanes (Brockton, MA) and its bowlers. View all posts by Rich

Just wondering; are you leaving a lot more corners in games 2 and 3 compared to game 1? Is this a sign of something?
cheers, p-skooner
I guess my spare shooting comes and goes, Gar, but my corner pins are something I need to work on. I threw 2 10s in the ditch, missed a 7 right, and chopped the 6 off of the 6-10 today. I make my corner pins at times, I just need to make them more consistently.
Hi Rich,
I know you’ll do a good job practicing your corner picking.
You are probably aware of the 3-6-9 sparing system and here is a link that explains it. http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art16382.asp
From a mental stand-point I try to treat bowling like golf. No matter how good (or bad) the last shot was, I have to prepare for the next shot in a manner that will give me the best chance of making a good shot.
cheers,
Gar
Gar, I think I also need to learn a release that will kill the hook, allowing me to shoot straighter at the pins. If I can do that, then I can just use the 20 board’s arrow as a spot and go cross-lane at them. “CoachJim” suggested learning this release, and you know what kind of help he’s been so far. 😉

Spot on, mate!
