One off (June 12 league night recap)

Sean Richard kind of spoiled this on Facebook for most of you…

My Week 5 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

It’s amazing what happens when you concentrate on the simple things, and all I was thinking most of the night was “Ring finger. Ring finger.” The result was a night that was my third 700, one pin off of my personal best series, and with my best league game since Apr. 20, 2011. Would have liked to have covered two of my 10s, but I had only one open in each game (the other a light 7-10 that got no messenger love). And it was a rare night in another way: All three games were over 200, and I hadn’t done that in a few years.

Result: 203-257-246=706
Average (15 games): 187
Average for last 9 games: 198
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 579

We had another strong team tonight, and with me going so well, I didn’t need my teammates much, but I still got at least one game over average from everyone. Team took seven of eight after tying the first game, and I got the tie by striking out in the 10th (and knowing I needed to to tie, which provided a shot of confidence that carried me the rest of the night).

  1. A few afterthought-type notes:

    • When he heard about the 257 game, Ray came out of the pro shop and said to me, “257 game? It’s about time, Richie!” I think he knew that I needed to get my game sorted out before I could put up bigger numbers.
    • Bob Young, my association’s office manager, who doesn’t bowl during the summer, was on hand behind an adjacent pair and saw it. He was in the building for my first 700, too, but he bowls in the Westgate Mixed league on Wednesday night and was likely down the high end of the house (I was also not yet on the board at the time.). Mostly, though, he was watching his son Jim bowl. While I was making my run at 300 in the third game, Jim was making a run at one himself and put up the first ten before a 10 pin derailed him for a 289; I had my cellphone out in the 10th frame in case I needed to record his 12th shot.
    • I will have now received every special achievement award (with the exception of high score awards) I was eligible for this year except for 275 game, with my receiving the 200 game award largely because of my poor start in winter league (I was averaging 163 after six weeks {18 games} and I had a 227 and a 211 game in Week 7, which earned me 225 game as well.).
