My league wasn’t going to wait for me last week, and I missed a 289 game by one of the “usual suspects”, Chris Zalewski, as a result (see high scores). Good bowling! 🎳😎
Month: March 2021
My COVID absence
As many of you have noticed, I’ve been away from Westgate for most of the last couple of weeks. This has been due to my possible COVID exposure two weeks ago, which was with a bowling contact. I was fully vaccinated at the time, but felt it my responsibility to stay away once I found out about the positive test in order to avoid possibly exposing anyone further, and that was just lengthened due to delays in my own testing.
The good news I have today is that I have tested negative, which means I can return today, which would have been two weeks out from the exposure. My bowling life was impacted, as I missed not only one Brunswick Mixed league session, but also one night of Patriots league brackets and two nights covering the Pepsi league as secretary, as well as the Northeast Amateur Tournament event here on Sunday. But I am looking forward to getting back to my bowling family.
Rene Thompson rolls 298/750 in Rhythm & Bowling
Rene Thompson got close to one a week ago Sunday in the Rhythm & Bowling league, with a 298 sandwiched between a 205 and a 247 for a 750 set (see recap, Lane 45). WTG! 🎳😁
Ray Fischer tosses 300/761, Brian Egan 289, Jon Hester 279 in Patriots league
Ray Fischer has been a great competitor at Westgate for many years, and continues to be one even today, proving it last Thursday night in the Patriots league, capping off a night in which he started 215-246 with a 300 for a 761 set (see recap, Lane 49). Brian Egan also had a 289 game that night, and Jon Hester a 279 (see high scores).
Stephen Major, Ray’s grandson, recorded and sent me the video shown below:
Congrats Ray, and nice bowling Brian & Jon! 🎳👏
Sean Richard takes RtR match play title at Lang’s
The Ripping the Rack Bowling Tour reported in their Facebook group (public post) that Sean Richard was the winner of their Mayhem Match Play Championship event Saturday at Lang’s Bowlarama in Cranston, RI after defeating Justin Burrows, 212-188 (with handicap; match play brackets can be viewed on TournamentBowl.com). Congrats Ka$h! 🎳🏆👏
Stephen Major shoots 300 in EP Tuesday Trios
Time to give a nod to a Westgate bowler who brought an accomplishment away from Westgate to my attention: Stephen Major shot a 300 game in the Tuesday Trios league at East Providence Lanes (see league’s high scores for week). Nice bowling, Stephen! 🎳😎
Jose Garcia fires 289 in TNBA league
Here’s a different name to post about this week: Jose Garcia checked in Friday night with a 289 game in the TNBA league (see high scores). Great bowling! 🎳👌
Ed Grossett rolls 763, Ethan Reyes 278 in Patriots league
Ed Grossett is probably the best back-up bowler (back-up = right-handed, but ball moves left-to-right) in Massachusetts, and maybe in New England. This will be my first mention of him here (at least for a score) since his first 300 game, which came here at Westgate six years ago at the state tournament, as he turned in a fine 255-253-255 for a 763 set Thursday night in the Patriots league (see recap, Lane 41). Also, Ethan Reyes posted a 279 game last week (see high scores).
WTG guys! 🎳👏
Mar. 23 Brunswick Mixed update
For various reasons, I’ve missed posting my own bowling the last couple of weeks, along with updating my league’s standings, so I’ll post my last two BowlSK sheets first:
My bowling was markedly better last Wednesday, particularly the first game, which was my best in quite a while, as it was clean (and you know how I treasure my clean games)! Some of the difference last Wednesday was biting the bullet and getting the Tropical Breeze detoxed and polished, but my spare game was also a bit better than the previous week, particularly where I didn’t miss any single-pin spares. A reset of my averages (overall and moving) and tomorrow night’s +1 score target follow:
Average (66 games): 168
Average for last 9 games: 170
Tomorrow night’s AVG+1 score: 556
Interactive standings after Week 23 (Week 7 of 2nd half)
The team only won one point in the last two weeks, the first game last week, so we remain in 11th (virtual last place). As tomorrow night is a position night, we’ll be bowling the vacant. BBOB have assumed the league lead by a half-point over Last Empire and Never Lucky, with 4 On 9 Man a point behind in 4th place.
Chris Zalewski bowls 275 in Rhythm & Bowling
I’m only noting this score now because this league’s standings sheets lag the others in posting: Chris Zalewski started the month of March in the Rhythm & Bowling league with a 275 game (see high scores). WTG! 😎🎳
Aaron Major 300/807, Brian Egan, Jon Hester 300s lead Mar. 11 Patriots scoring
If you thought Chris Zalewski’s 809 series last Wednesday night was something, the Patriots league wasn’t going to be outdone, as Aaron Major had 300-268-239 for an 807 of his own (Lane 47). While this wasn’t a bigger set than Zalewski’s, it was the scoring by the other bowlers that was the outdoing, as Brian Egan and Jon Hester both threw 300 games in the first game as teammates (see recap on Lane 50), with only Mark Zimmerman’s 224 preventing it from being a team award game (by a pin). All of this made Jim Ferguson’s 278/762 night look paltry by comparison (recap linked on Lane 47 above; see Lane 40).
Great night guys! 🎳😎👏
Chris Zalewski slams 809 in Brunswick Mixed

800 series have historically (at least in my time in the league) been elusive. The other night, however, Chris Zalewski, the gentleman in the photo above, posted 256-278-275 for an 809 set, the recap at the end of the night which is shown below (indirect thanks to Chris’ mother, Tina):

Congrats and great bowling! 🎳🔥👏😎
Peter Colombo throws first 700 in Patriots league

I wanted to call attention to the above recap because another notable Patriots league bowler, joining the league for the first time this season, now has a higher series than me. While not notable as a bowler, this bowler is Peter Colombo (on Lane 37), the head football coach at Brockton High School, who, last week, bowled his first 700 series with a 710, beating my high series ever by three sticks. Peter used to only be able to bowl in the summer because of his fall football commitment. With the football season in some doubt this year due to the COVID pandemic, however, he could join a fall league, and chose the Patriots league because he’d bowled the Monday doubles league and many of the Monday doubles league bowlers were Patriots league bowlers.
As it turned out, Brockton High School will start a football season Saturday with a trip to Durfee in Fall River, and I want to wish Peter and his Boxers the best this season. 🎳🏈❤🖤
David Chin posts 765, Bobby Geddes 752 in Brunswick Mixed
Saving my own league for last in the week’s league posting: David Chin went 249-269-247 for a 765 (recap, Lane 54) and Bobby Geddes 244-265-243 for a 752 (Lane 52). Good bowling, guys! 🎳👏
2020-21 Brunswick Mixed Week 21 standings update
Interactive standings after Week 21 (Week 5 of 2nd half)
Creeden’s Mustangs is in 11th, 11.5 points behind 4 On 9 Man, who are a point ahead of BBOB, 2.5 points ahead of Spare Us, and 5.5 points ahead of Last Empire and Never Lucky. 10th Frame Magic will be the opponents tonight.
Steve Miller rolls 277 in Pepsi league
A different name to post about this week in the Pepsi league: Steve Miller put up a 277 game Monday night, per the high scores. WTG! 🎳😎
Rene Thompson fires 279, Curtis Jordan 277, John O’Donnell 270 in Rhythm & Bowling
The Rhythm & Bowling league ended February with Rene Thompson posting a 279 game, Curtis Jordan a 277, and John O’Donnell a 270 (see high scores). WTG guys! 🎳👍
Taylor Sinkler shoots 265/666, Paris Cook 279 in TNBA league
Taylor Sinkler has easily been the best woman at Westgate this year, and showed why again last Friday night in the TNBA league, going 202-199-265 for a 666 set (see recap, Lane 58). For the men, Paris Cook wasn’t about to be outdone, chipping in a 279 game himself (see high scores). Good bowling! 🎳👏
Keith Kaestner rolls 299, Joe Bourhill 287/781, Sean Richard, Jim Ferguson 279 in Patriots league
Recapping a big Patriots league night last week, Keith Kaestner had the biggest game of all, with a 299 (see high scores, but Joe Bourhill the biggest night, going 257-237-287 for a 781 (see recap, Lane 33). Wrapping it up, Hall of Famers Sean Richard and Jim Ferguson also had a 279 each as teammates in the first game (see recap, Lane 47). Nice bowling guys! 🎳👏
Mar. 3 Brunswick Mixed recap
Wednesday night’s bowling, frame-by-frame
The splits were the story of the night, particularly the 4-5-7, which I couldn’t seem to get away from. If those balls finish like they’re supposed to, I definitely save the 500, and maybe have a chance to improve my average again.
Result: 159-185-152=496
Average (60 games): 167
Average for last 9 games: 174
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 514
Because this post was delayed, my recollection of my team’s night is a bit sketchy, but I think my team won the first game. That was it however. This may be edited.
Shawn Coles bowls 279 in Brunswick Mixed
Always happy when I can write this guy up: My league’s secretary, Shawn Coles, posted a 279 last week. Nice game, sir! 🎳😎
2020-21 Brunswick Mixed Week 20 league standings update
Interactive league standings after Week 20 (Week 4 of 2nd half)
Creeden’s Mustangs are in 11th, nine points behind 4 On 9 Man, who are a point and a half ahead of BBOB, two ahead of Spare Us (our opponents tonight) and four ahead of Never Lucky.
Chris Zalewski shoots 278 in TNBA league
Chris Zalewski had another good game last Friday in the TNBA league, with a 278. WTG! 🎳👍
Brian Egan shoots 290/782, Danny Khuu 756, Omar Butcher 277 in Patriots league
Two of these names will be familiar, but one not so much: Congrats to Brian Egan, who ran the back 11 in the first game, and followed by games of 260 and 232 for a 782 set last week in the Patriots league (see recap, Lane 46). Danny Khuu also went 251-247-258 for a 756 (recap, Lane 34), and Omar Butcher threw a 277 game (see week’s high scores).
Nice bowling guys! 🎳🔥👌
