“Gutter To Glory” added to blogroll
“Gutter To Glory” is a Roto Grip-sponsored blog written by Timmothy Merath, a web development/social media specialist for the company living in Milwaukee who is bowling in his first league this season (not counting those occasions in which he was a sub). I think his experiences as a neophyte league bowler should be interesting reading, and, as such, I have added the link to it to the blogroll.
Fall 2011 Week 3 virtual league results
“JaMMeRs” took only two points again, winning just the third game against Team 8. My team now sits in 11th place (out of 14 teams), 12 points off the lead held by “Wrecking Balls,” who lead Team 4 by 2 points and Team 12 by 3 points.
Alex Aguiar throws 11 in a row 290 game in Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen action
Congratulations to Alex Aguiar on an 11 in a row game of 290 last Tuesday in the Sportsmen league. I’m going to assume he had the last 11 strikes with that score. 😀
Oct. 2 league standings update
After splitting with “Yes – We Have A Girl,” “Pinfall Wizards” stand in 4th place, 2.5 points behind “Warren’s Girls” (our opponents this week). The latter team holds a half-point lead on “The Mustangs.”
Correction made to Sept. 28 BowlSK sheet
I realized that, in the BowlSK sheet for my latest league night, when I changed balls (to my Hy-Road), I noted the change in the first frame with the ball, but not the second frame, so I had to go back to the sheet and reset the ball to the ball I was using in the frames that still had the ball I started with (my Reign of Fire). The sheet now gives a truer account of the night.
Cross-training #195
An Arizona Cardinals blog noted that the team will participate in a “Kingpin Challenge” charity event on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Brunswick Kyrene Lanes in Chandler, AZ. The post did not mention which charity(ies) the event would benefit.
Sept. 28 league night recap
Sorry for the late post, and I’ll explain why after I link up the BowlSK sheet…
My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame
As I sort of alluded to on Facebook, I did not get very much sleep the other night, so my performance last night suffered. That said, missing 3 straight easy spares in the second game was inexcusable. I did, however, figure out something that helps me pick up spares on the right side: I need to walk toward the middle arrow instead of my third arrow target, which should put my swing’s line through the target…if I drift right, it usually ends up in the gutter.
Result: 169-137-174=480
Average (12 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 170
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 527
Just about everyone else on my team had at least 2 games over their average. We might have picked up another two points, but our opponents, particularly their bowlers later in the order, got hot in the third game, and we lost that game by enough to also lose total, so it was a 2-2 split.
As a final note, Lou, my teammate from the past summer, gave me a suggestion on how to play these lanes, so that’s something I’ll try next week, preferably in practice first if I can make it in.
Fall 2011 Week 2 virtual league results
“JaMMeRs” won the first game again last week; however, this time, the margin was not by enough to take series total from Team 12, so the result was 5-2 in favor of the latter team. My team stands in a tie for 8th (out of 14 teams) with Team 13 (whom we trail on scratch pinfall). The deficit to the lead is 7 points, with the lead being held by “Wrecking Balls,” “Trip 6s,” and Team 4 (listed in order of scratch pinfall).
Sept. 25 league standings update
After taking all four points from “Bowling Stones,” “Pinfall Wizards” moved into a tie in points for third place with “The Mustangs” after the third week of the season. “Warren’s Girls” took over the league lead, a point ahead of “Outta Da Guttah” (the tie for third is just a point and a half off of the lead). “Yes – We Have A Girl” provides my team’s opposition this week.
“All Ten Back” added to blogroll
I was contacted today by the owner/administrator of the site, “All Ten Back,” who notified me both about his main site and his blog. Giving both a perusal, I noted that that blog had a nice collection of ball reaction video, mostly of Storm/Roto-Grip and Hammer balls. Where he does have other videos, I decided to add the blog to the blogroll rather than make it a site in the “Ball sites” listing. The addition of the blog is with the understanding that people can find the blogger’s main site through the blog.
Sept. 21 league night recap
My Week 3 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
The skinny on my night tonight was that I actually found something I liked with the Hy-Road; I just need to get more consistent with that. My spare game continues to be spotty, but I made more than I missed in the first game until I went sheet from the 9th frame.
Result: 189-168-167
Average (9 games): 176
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 536
Berta and Brian overcame their first night jitters to both go over their respective first night averages in all three games. Team took all four points, getting the first game with me knowing I needed at least the first strike in the 10th.
Fall/Winter 2011-12 links transition
I had meant to note it in previous posts, but the links to my winter league’s standings sheets on both LeagueSecretary.com and BowlerExpress.com are back up in the “Author’s links” sidebar listing with the start of the new season. More importantly was the real reason I waited on this post: I had created a new sheet on BowlingTracker.com for this year’s winter league, but it had problems showing the correct AVG+1 after Week 1 (it just repeated my Week 1 series score instead of that score plus 6 pins, as it should have been with my series evenly divisible by 3). I am now satisfied that the AVG+1 score (which I note in most of my league night recaps) is correct after Week 2, so the new sheet has been added to the links listing. I will probably take down the summer league links tomorrow, so if you want to view anything from that, you have one more chance. 😉
Fall 2011 Week 1 virtual league results
Thanks to a big 289 game from “metguy,” “JaMMeRs” won the first game over “The Angry Birds”, however, we lost the other two. The first game was still enough to win the point for series total, so the split was 4-3 in our opponents’ favor. Largely because we had the second high series of the first week (in which we had high game), we stand on top of the teams with 3 points in 8th place. Team 13, “Wrecking Balls” (different team than last winter, but still with one of the members of last winter’s team), Team 4, and “Trip 6s” all won 5 points in Week 1 to stand at the top of the standings, and they are listed in order of scratch pinfall.
Sept. 18 league standings update
After the Sloanes’ averages were figured in, “Pinfall Wizards” ended up taking three points from “Dee’s Boys II” (renamed that night). This gives us four points after two weeks, tying us for 5th in points with “Mustangs.” “The Incredibowls” swept their match last week and hold a single point lead over “Yes We Have A Girl” (last year’s “5 G’s” minus one of their male members and bringing in a female friend). “Bowling Stones” provide the opposition for my team this week.
Ed Roberts among 4 local cashers in September 2011 NEBA event
Ed Roberts finished in the top 16 in the September NEBA event held last weekend at Nutmeg Bowl in Connecticut, with Greg Flamand, Rich Fulton, and Danny Khuu also representing the Brockton association among the cashers. Storm DeVincent won his first NEBA title, defeating 13 time champion Bill Webb by a score of 234-196 in the title match. Full match play results can be found on NEBA’s website.
Fall 2011 virtual league ramp-up
I just wanted to note before the first week’s results became known that, unlike the two virtual leagues that ran last season, this fall’s edition is just a four-man league running for 14 weeks (still with more bowlers than either league last season). My teammates for the fall virtual league are “JW123”, “Matrix900”, and “metguy”, and the team name is “JaMMeRs” (combining the first initials of all 4 team members).
Gino Beniamino opens Coke Classic season with 298 game
Congratulations to Gino Beniamino on an 11 in a row 298 game on Monday night in the Coke Classic League. This may have been the first honor score of the new season not only at Westgate Lanes, but in the entire Brockton Bowling Association…I’ll have to wait until I see standings from North Bowl to know for sure and note it on the association’s Facebook page.
Cross-training #194
Like their NFL counterparts before them, the NBA players haven’t let a lockout keep them from engaging in charitable activity, as the Orlando Sentinel notes that Magic guard Chris Duhon will host the Ten Pins for Kids charity tournament Saturday at the World Bowling Center. Proceeds will benefit the Families In Transition (FIT) program of the Seminole County public school system.
Sept. 14 league night recap
Tonight saw two new teammates, with the names Brian and Berta Sloane. Much of the early night was spent helping them navigate the process of filling out their USBC membership forms, but we settled into the night nicely afterward. I don’t know if these were the people Carl said he might bring in, but I’m happy to at least have a full team again.
My Week 2 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
I continued the process of feeling out the new shot tonight, and, while it was a mixed bag, punching out to end the night was encouraging. My 10 pin was a problem tonight, despite making the pin on my first try at it.
Result: 190-166-171=527
Average (6 games): 177
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 538
We weren’t bowling with five tonight despite the new team members because Carl was seeing his folks in the Midwest this week. Berta settled down after a bad first game, so I was hopeful of taking some points tonight.
Sept. 13 league standings update
“Pinfall Wizards” ended up taking just one point; with 5 teams taking three points and 5 teams taking a single point in Week 1, that meant my team is in the bottom half of the standings, but not quite dead last, as we had the third best pinfall of those teams that took a lone point. “The Incredibowls” picked up where they ended last season…at the top.
I got the standings from Bowler Express, so the link for that will go into the “Author’s links” list in the sidebar. I will check LeagueSecretary.com after posting the Bowler Express link for the sheet there, and put the link up if there’s a new sheet there. The only reason why there’s no BowlingTracker.com sheet linked yet is that there’s a bug on the site in calculating AVG+1, so I don’t want to link it until I’m reasonably sure the stats are fully accurate.
EDIT: Forgot to look for it initially, but I can also report that “Pinfall Wizards” bowl against “Double D’s” (last season’s “Dee’s Boys”) tomorrow night (now actually this evening).
Aug. 2011 People’s Tournament results
The People’s Tournament reported that Ricky Brigham (Sparetime Lanes {CT}, 167 avg.) was the winner of the event held on Aug. 7 at Westgate Lanes. In the title match, Brigham defeated George Jones (Hanscom Lanes, 209 avg.) by a score (with handicaps) of 219-194. For Westgate Lanes, Tyrone Thornton (188 avg.) and Mike Major (208 avg.) were in the final eight. Elsewhere in the Brockton association area, Herbert Brown (Kingston Ten Pin, 180 avg.) and Charles Donovan (North Bowl, 190 avg.) were both semifinalists.
Sept. 7 league night (start of 2011-12 season)
Eileen decided to join her husband on another team, so my team was just myself, Carl, and Patrick tonight. Carl may get a couple of co-workers to join, but we’ll have to take 2 vacant 140s for now if they don’t. “Borrowing” a name from my buddy “MikeHL” via one of his virtual league teams, my team’s name this year is “Pinfall Wizards.”
My Week 1 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
I had made a “New Bowling Year” resolution to have every ball with me every league night, and I was sure glad I did tonight, because there is a new house shot. It places more oil across the lane, so those with pearlized balls are going to struggle. With my entire arsenal with me, it didn’t take me long to go to my Reign of Fire, which had been a tournament-only ball until tonight. My low game (the third) was a mix of bad shots and missed spares.
Result: 182-199-156=537
Average (3 games): 179
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 543
I won’t have an idea how my team did until I see the first standings sheet. Our opponents happened to be John and Eileen’s new team.
The visitor, revisited
I got to play host to my friend from the BowlingCommunity forums, “MikeHL,” again today. If I wanted a challenge, I could’ve had the Coke shot on one of the 5 pairs by the desk today, but I really just wanted us to relax and have fun, so we only took a pair with the house shot. This time, Mike got to see me at my best for at least one game, as I threw a clean 236 out of the gate. It was downhill after that however, but Mike liked to say afterwards that he dragged me down to his level (his problems bowling have been well-documented on the forums, as I may have said in my post about his first visit). He managed to beat me in the last game when, needing a double in the 10th, I failed to get the first strike. I missed a number of multi-pin spares, but only one of my single pins, and that the 7 pin, which I had been making more consistently; I made all of my 10s, but did manage to leave the pin standing after chopping the 6-9 off of the 6-9-10. Afterward, I introduced him to a couple of the other bowlers I knew, my friend John Hayes, and Tyrone Thornton, who was one of the cashers in the Hall of Fame Classic last season.
Cross-training #193
The Huffington Post notes that Kerry Wood of the Chicago Cubs will run his 6th annual celebrity bowling tournament on Sept. 18 at the 10pin Bowling Lounge in downtown Chicago. This year, the proceeds will benefit the Wood Family Foundation, which was started by Wood and his wife Sarah this season as a general children’s charity.
2011 Brunswick Mixed meeting and no-tap tournament
There wasn’t much for the officers to discuss at the league meeting, as there were no rule changes and the house did not go up on lineage. I was given the floor after the officers were finished, during which I mentioned the Brockton Bowling Association’s Facebook page, and also stated my wish that a couple of teams from the league enter this season’s championship tournament, which will be our 50th annual tournament (and why I hoped my league will support the association).
John stated his desire to mix it up a little and bowl with different people, but, later in the evening, I found out it was just John and not also Eileen that wanted to do so, so I’m going to try to stay with the same base team. Carl said one of his co-workers may be interested in joining, and said co-worker may be our fifth bowler.
As for the no-tap tournament, a bad 166 first game pretty much killed my chances of cashing, but I used the other two games to work on some stuff, and I bowled rather decently, with games of 223 and 244 and most of the strikes being of the natural variety. There were also conversions of the 3-6-7-10 and the 2-4-10 thrown in there, which Eileen particularly enjoyed. I wound up using the Tropical Breeze on the left lane and the Fast on the right lane; the difference was that the left lane was hooking a lot more, so I thought the Breeze would tame down the back-end more.
The night belonged to our league president, Jim Blyth, however: he had two no-tap 300 games and was really just one shot away from throwing a perfect no-tap 900 series (an 8-10 split in the second game ruined it). His “partner in crime,” Keith Kaestner, had a no-tap 300 game himself, and I was told Liz DiBennedetto was doing well, also, so, with only four places cashing, it didn’t look good for me.
Cross-training #192
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune notes that Minnesota Twins center fielder Denard Span will be the host of the annual “Twins & Pins” charity event on Thursday, Sept. 15 at Brunswick Zone XL in Lakeville, MN. The event benefits the Jeremiah Program and Friends of St. Paul Baseball (part of Major League Baseball’s RBI program).
Irene update
As those of you who know me on Facebook know, I was without power for 50.5 hours due to what was Tropical Storm Irene when it hit the area. Westgate Lanes was without power for about the same amount of time, but power there was also restored today.
My league will be meeting at the originally-scheduled time of tomorrow night at 6:00 PM, but some other leagues may be delaying their meetings, so please check with your league officers, particularly your secretaries, about alternate meeting plans. The meeting of Westgate Lanes management and the Brockton and Tri-City associations with the league secretaries had to be postponed due to the storm, but I have yet to hear about a reschedule of the meeting. I’ll try to pass along information (in the form of a comment to this post) when I get it.
Aug. 27 outing with brother
With my brother in Brockton helping my other folks get ready for Irene, he thought he could use a little diversion, so a bowling outing with me was again in order. We had been over my sister’s doing work, so neither of us brought our “A” games, but I did have 2 games in the 180s. My problem today was making anything with more than one pin (though I had a nice conversion of the 3-6-9-10 in the third game), and I also missed a couple of 10 pins. By the end, I was trying to bomb it up the outside because moving inside wasn’t really working, and, although I wasn’t completely effective doing that, I got better at it near the end and was clean after the 6th frame of Game 3.
Cross-training #191
This is something I try to post every year. 😀
The Boston Globe noted on their Red Sox blog that Josh Beckett will hold his fifth annual “Beckett Bowl” for the Josh Beckett Foundation and Children’s Hospital Boston on Monday at the Lucky Strike Lanes on Ipswich St. across from Fenway Park. The post linked above has the number to call for tickets.
