“Mr. 900” Hakim Emmanuel now has six 300 games to his credit after posting one in qualifying today for the Bay State Open event. The surprise is that this one was not on lanes 47 & 48, as the Bay State Open’s video below shows:
As a personal note, this was also Hakim’s first one that I was actually there for. 🙂
This is a surprise, but not really one: A youth bowler has bowled the first 300 game of the season at Westgate Lanes, albeit one of our best, Stephen Major. The score, of course, came in the Saturday morning league. WTG! 🙂
It wasn’t quite a 300 game, but the first honor score of the new season at Westgate was bowled tonight in the Patriots league, and the congratulations go to Steve Ferguson, with a 299 game. Steve is the brother of Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Jim Ferguson, who is also Steve’s teammate in the league. WTG! 🙂
Wasn’t sure if the Monday Summer Doubles league sanction included their end-of-season sweeper, so I didn’t post it on the Brockton association page on Facebook, but Sean Richard reported a score in the sweeper that was worth mentioning on the blog, anyway, Danny Khuu’s 300 game. WTG! 🙂
Per Nick Dean’s Facebook post (below), “$eany Ka$h” had games of 289, 279, and 289 for an 857 set last night in a sweeper at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford. WTG! 🙂
I don’t remember if they’ve ever bowled 300 on the same night, but two of Westgate’s best, Danny Khuu and Sean Richard, nearly did so last night in the doubles league when the former bowled a 299 and the latter 297. Good job! 🙂
I got word from Stephen Major that one of the newer adults in the Adult/Junior league, Kenny Lei, bowled his first 300 game tonight, and Stephen also told me he himself had a 290 game. WTG, both of you! 🙂
Paying the usual Wednesday summer visit, I saw Ray had a couple of new 300 games on the wall from the other night in the doubles league. One was for Danny Khuu’s, but I had to pay closer attention to the other one, as it was “Mr. 900” Hakim Emmanuel’s, and I did note it was on lanes 47 & 48, the pair the 900 series was on, so that’s now five career 300 games for Hakim, all on that pair.
I was watching Ryan Yelle and Mike Botelho’s pair most of the night the other night, but I did see in the standings today that Tina Gannon shot 212, 276, and 233 in her first three games that night for a 721 award set. WTG Tina! 🙂
Striking a compromise between timeliness and my wish to not post about a tournament until I get something official from it, I’m reporting on the honor scores from Sunday’s NAT first, which were the 300 games bowled in qualifying by Keith Kaestner and Mark Paradis. Danny Khuu got video of the last strike of Keith’s game, which I share below:
Congrats to both, particularly Keith, as he bowls in my Wednesday league. I hope to have results soon. 🙂
With 13 entries in the no-tap tournament last night, Sean Richard won with an 875 score, TomTom Hedding second with an 854, and Danny Khuu third with an 847.
Also, I usually don’t mention 300 games bowled in the no-tap tournament because of the nature of the tournament, but I need to note here that Jewell Wilson managed a natural 300 game in the second game. Good going!
Mike Botelho converts 7-10 split: There may not have been many great scores tonight in the league, but Mike Botelho, who I know from the Coke and Westgate Mixed leagues, did something very notable tonight by converting the 7-10 split. I knew he was shooting the split, but looked up just in time to see the second pin fall. To my memory, it was the first time I had ever seen a 7-10 converted in person. WTG Mikey! 🙂
If there’s one bowler in my Wednesday night winter league who can post some big scores, it’s the younger Ed Godino. He’s actually bowling on Wednesday night this summer, and had himself a 290 game in the league last Wednesday night. WTG Ed! 🙂
While stopping in on the Monday doubles league tonight, Kevin Thibeault told me he had a 300 in the NEBA event yesterday at AMF Auburn Lanes, which I confirmed with his mother was his first in NEBA and 11th overall. WTG Kev! 🙂
Junior Gold week has started off well for Stephen & Aaron Major, as, according to the current standings, they are leading U20 scratch doubles with a 1,439 score at the Bowling.com Youth Open, which runs for the next three weekends at Expo Bowl in Indianapolis, IN, the Junior Gold host city. In the last game of the event, Aaron had a 300 game (Tim Major’s video of the last strike of the game is below) and Stephen added a 279.
There’s still a lot of bowling left, but most of the best youth bowlers in the nation are in Indy for Junior Gold this week, so we have some hope that the Majors’ score holds if they can get through this weekend.
I saw another 300 game video on Sean Richard’s Facebook and immediately thought it was in the doubles league tonight, so I asked him to confirm it. He said his 300 was not in the league, but told me Mark Zimmerman did have one in the league tonight. WTG Mark! 🙂
I’ve already mentioned Greg Andrews’ 300 game on Wednesday night, but a look at the updated standings for that league alerted me to another nice game, Sean Richard’s 290. WTG! 🙂
The lack of posting about the Westgate Warriors from me is indicative of a disappointing Underground Bowling Association season for them, but they did end it on a high note today at Hall of Fame Silver Lanes in E. Hartford, CT by winning 32 of 40 points against Norrage in their position round match. The bowler doing the most damage in the match was James Bessette, who had 22 strikes in a row bowling in the scratch portion of the match en route to an 814 series that had a 300 game in it.
Of course, I’m hoping for a better season next year. Something I can already post about next season is that there will be two UBA districts in New England, North and South, with the Westgate Warriors set to bowl in the North district.
Greg Andrews was in the Coke league briefly, but regularly bowled at AMF Taunton Lanes until it closed two years ago. When that happened, he joined the Westgate Mixed and Patriots leagues, and is now bowling the Wednesday night summer league. The other night, in that league, Greg bowled what a league source told me was his first 300 game. Congrats Greg! 🙂
Finalists of the Northeast Amateur Tournament doubles event on May 15, 2016 at Westgate Lanes (L-R): Runners-up Barry Muise & Jim O’Neil, champions Dale Doody & John Bekish (Photo courtesy of NAT)
The Northeast Amateur Tournament’s current newsletter reports Dale Doody & John Bekish as the champions of the regular season-ending doubles event at Westgate Lanes, defeating Coke league bowler Barry Muise and his partner Jim O’Neil by a score of 984-886 (with handicap) in the two-game final match. Other Westgate bowlers cashing were Stan Lewis & Tom Hedding, Paris Cook & Ralph Dahlgren, Tina Gannon & Bill Briggs, Chuck Paige II (with partner Jim Handy), and Matt & Sean Richard.
There was a 290 game during qualifying, bowled by Jeff Wilson, but it needs to be noted that he had the first 11 rather than the more normal back 11.
The NAT has also announced on Facebook that their August 14 tournament will take place at the brand new Wamesit Lanes in Tewksbury, with qualifying taking place in the main bowling center and the head-to-head finals in the Pow Wow Room. Unless I miss my guess, this will be the first tournament Wamesit Lanes hosts.
This year’s edition of the Adult/Junior summer league got started with a bang tonight, and the Major family was heavily involved, as cousins Stephen and Aaron both had 297 games. Stephen is returning to Westgate for the summer after his freshman year at Curry College.
Danny Khuu & Jim Ferguson, who bowled a 600 doubles game in the state tournament on May 1 at Greylock Bowl & Golf (Photo by Sean Richard; taken at Westgate Lanes)
A big day at the Massachusetts state tournament at Greylock Bowl & Golf in N. Adams for Danny Khuu began with a 289 game in doubles, but really picked up steam when he and his partner, Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Jim Ferguson, bowled what is thought to be the first 600 doubles game in state tournament history in the second game, after which Danny finished with a 222 for an 811 series. Combined with Jim’s 770, the pair took the doubles lead with a 1,581, which was one pin shy of the state tournament doubles record, set by Steve Blanchet & Jim Sicard two years ago at Brunswick Lowell Lanes.
The day was not over for Khuu, however, as he proceeded to post games of 300, 279, and 236 for an 815 in singles, which may have taken over the lead in that event. He came up relatively short in team, with a 721, but that was still good for a 2,347 all-events score, breaking the state tournament record held by Jeff Fields, also set two years ago in Lowell.
Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Bill Major shot most of his big scores before this blog existed, and has been in the Coke league for most of its existence, so I haven’t mentioned many scores he’s bowled, but he gave me an opportunity to do so last night in the Patriots league, with games of 258, 268, and 278 for an 804 series. That was not the only big number from last night, however, as “TomTom” Hedding, a potential future Hall of Famer, had games of 246, 268, and 297 for an 811.
I didn’t see which pin he left, but a good “shout-out” to Ken Gerraughty tonight with a 299, which is either the fourth or fifth score I’ve been able to mention from my league this year. 🙂
Proud mama Sandi Litchfield posted on Facebook that her son Shane started off his singles event in the youth state tournament at AMF Holiday Lanes in Somerset today with a 290 game and finished with a 696 in the event. WTG Shane! 🙂
I’m not sure how many times Tina Gannon has bowled a 700 series in the Coke league this season, but she did it again Monday night with a 713, which had a high 254 game in it. WTG Tina! 🙂
Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Bob Hamilton has had many big nights in his bowling career, but none better than tonight, as he threw games of 300, 289, and 267 for an 856 series. Of course, this is now only a personal high series: It would have tied the house record until last year.
I left early tonight, and didn’t get this score until I checked Facebook, but Sean Richard had career perfect game #70 tonight in the Westgate Mixed league. Atta boy, Seany! 🙂
Ray Fischer already has a couple of 800 series this season, and he added a 300 game to that list of season accomplishments tonight in the His & Hers league. It was just his 7th in a Westgate Lanes career that spans decades, and he’s had a number of 11-in-a-row type of awards as well as 800 series.
Finalists of the inaugural BBA Madness tournament (L-R): Champion Mark Ames, runner-up Chris Carter
The Brockton Bowling Association held its inaugural BBA Madness tournament today at Westgate Lanes, and Mark Ames, bowling out of Trade Center Bowl in Falmouth, defeated 2011 Brockton Bowling Association Bowler of the Year champion Chris Carter, out of North Bowl, 256-250 (with handicap) in the title match. Ames reached the final match by defeating Eric Derosiers 241-206, while Carter defeated Buddy Wilt, the top qualifier, 256-213 for his spot in the finals. The tournament used what we believe is a new format for qualifying, which was based on wins in each game against the field. There were 31 entries, with the top qualifier getting a bye in the first round of the match play bracket.
Congrats to everyone who cashed, including Sean Lyons, Tim Major, Paul Eklund, and Jeff Carter, the latter who had his second 300 game of the week in the round of 16 in match play. I hope to follow up with full results, including a bit about how we pulled the format off.
