Alex Aguiar wins two events at 2016 BTM Tournament

As Jeff Richgels posted on Facebook (look in first comment), Alex Aguiar of Dartmouth, MA has unofficially won Open Singles and Open Doubles (with Alex Cavangaro) at this year’s BTM (Bowling This Month) Tournament, which has been running concurrently with the USBC Open Championships at Coconut Bowl in Sparks, NV. Alex shot 739 in singles and combined with Cavagnaro for a 1,463 score in doubles. According to the posted program sheet (PDF), the lane condition was Sport-compliant (40′, 25.83mL, 1.92:1).

Update: Official final standings from this year’s BTM Tournament have been posted here.

July 11 No-Tap Shootout results

The no-tap tournament last night had 19 entries, the most we’ve had for it recently. Ed Roberts ended up winning with an 877 (and had the no-tap 900 series alive until the 6th frame of Game 3), Sean Richard was 2nd with 857, and Stan Lewis 3rd with 832.

There will be another one soon, but not next week because of a few bowlers being in Indianapolis because their children are bowling Junior Gold.

July 2016 SEMBA Century Doubles results

The Senior E. Mass. Bowlers Association held its inaugural Century Doubles (sum of the ages of the bowlers on a team must be at least 100) tournament at Westgate Lanes today, with John Kirker & Todd Lathrop winning the final match, 446-335, over John Hayes Jr. & Brian Egan, as reported on the SEMBA website, which also has the other cashers (eight total).

There were 26 entries, which I believe was better than expected, and I might have been able to run some brackets if SEMBA management had known they were going to get that turnout.

2016 Mass. state tournament results

The North Adams USBC Bowling Association has made results of the 2016 state tournament, recently concluded at Greylock Bowl & Golf, official, and the results can be found on their website (links to PDFs of event standings and prize list on linked page). As usual, I’ll recognize the state champions below (association represented in parentheses):

Handicap Team: Live Free or Die (Worcester County) 3,815
Scratch Team: The Bearded Beasts (North Adams) 3,583
Handicap Doubles: Jim Ferguson & Danny Khuu (Brockton) 1,639
Scratch Doubles: Buddy Wilt & Rob Young (Brockton) 1,499
Handicap Singles: Lou Rosa (Southeastern Mass.) 872
Scratch Singles: Danny Khuu (Brockton) 815
Handicap All-Events: Dan Morse (Brockton) 2,437
Scratch All-Events: Danny Khuu (Brockton) 2,347

Recognizing the team champions as individuals:

Live Free or Die: Dave Rice, Valerie Calberry, Eric Frost, John Bercier, Mike Klosin
The Bearded Beasts: Tom Mongeon, Josh Sweet, Rob Carter, Dave Rice, Scott Demarsico

As previously reported, Danny Khuu’s scratch all-events score is a new state tournament record.

If the Brockton bowlers who usually read this don’t know Dan Morse, he’s actually, as Mike Violette told me, a first-year North Bowl bowler who actually started in one of the leagues in Rhode Island and was convinced to join a league at North Bowl. Mike said Dan has really improved in his first year, already threatening honor score level at times.

Congrats to all! 🙂

May 15 NAT doubles results

May 2016 NAT doubles finalists
Finalists of the Northeast Amateur Tournament doubles event on May 15, 2016 at Westgate Lanes (L-R): Runners-up Barry Muise & Jim O’Neil, champions Dale Doody & John Bekish (Photo courtesy of NAT)

The Northeast Amateur Tournament’s current newsletter reports Dale Doody & John Bekish as the champions of the regular season-ending doubles event at Westgate Lanes, defeating Coke league bowler Barry Muise and his partner Jim O’Neil by a score of 984-886 (with handicap) in the two-game final match. Other Westgate bowlers cashing were Stan Lewis & Tom Hedding, Paris Cook & Ralph Dahlgren, Tina Gannon & Bill Briggs, Chuck Paige II (with partner Jim Handy), and Matt & Sean Richard.

There was a 290 game during qualifying, bowled by Jeff Wilson, but it needs to be noted that he had the first 11 rather than the more normal back 11.

The NAT has also announced on Facebook that their August 14 tournament will take place at the brand new Wamesit Lanes in Tewksbury, with qualifying taking place in the main bowling center and the head-to-head finals in the Pow Wow Room. Unless I miss my guess, this will be the first tournament Wamesit Lanes hosts.

Ed Roberts wins May 2016 SEMBA at Town Line

Senior E. Mass. Bowlers Association tournament director Eric Lam reported to me that Ed Roberts was the winner of their event today at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden, going undefeated (two wins and two ties) in match play for a 1,932 final pinfall. Darrell Guertin (1,896) was second, Steve Ferraro (1,843) third, and Jimmie Pritts Jr. (1,776) fourth. Cut scores were 886 (Senior) and 844 (Super Senior), with David Gordon (Senior) and Dennis Pienkowski (Super Senior) high out of the money. There were 14 entries.

May 21 No-Tap Shootout results

The bowlers actually decided to run more than one no-tap tournament today. There were just six entries in the regularly-scheduled one, and the bowlers decided to still pay two places instead of making it winner-take-all. Ed Roberts won with an 815, while Hakim Emmanuel was second with a 775.

I couldn’t stay for the second go-around.

Ferguson & Khuu 600 game follow-up notes

We knew Jim Ferguson & Danny Khuu’s 600 doubles game at the just-concluded state tournament was going to be the high doubles game in the nation, but, as the Bowl.com leaderboard currently shows, it is the only such game to have been reported so far in the nation. I did help with the reporting process, mostly making sure Jim & Danny got the appropriate USBC form.

Jim also reminded me that he and Danny won doubles in the city tournament, and he believes it’s the first time in Brockton Bowling Association history that the same pair won doubles in both the city and state tournaments in the same year, as unofficial final results are now up on the North Adams Bowling Association website (under “Handouts”).

Sean Richard wins 2015-16 Bay State Open Bowler of the Year

The Bay State Open reported on their Facebook page that Sean Richard has won their 2015-16 Bowler of the Year title, thanks to his early-season wins at Walnut Hill Bowl and Town Line Luxury Lanes, as well as finishing second in the recent regular season finale at East Providence Lanes. I should note that lefties have won both Bay State Open Bowler of the Year titles, as Bill Sheehey won the inaugural title last year.

Congrats Seany! 🙂

2016 Mass. state youth tournament results

The Massachusetts USBC Youth Association has posted official results from the state tournament, concluded last weekend at AMF Holiday Lanes in Somerset, on their website (link is to front page; individual event results linked on front page). As always, I concentrate on Westgate Lanes’ state champions in the post body, below:

Doubles, 321-360, scratch: Jonathan Gerraughty & Phillip Gottfried 1,148
Singles, 161-180, handicap: Phillip Gottfried 732
Singles, 181+, handicap: Shane Litchfield 747
Singles, 121-140, scratch: Dylan Waldmyer 610
All-Events, 101-120, handicap: Ashley Major 2,157
All-Events, 161-180, handicap: Phillip Gottfried 2,194
All-Events, 121-140, scratch: Dylan Waldmyer 1,640

Congrats to everyone who placed in the tournament, whether mentioned here nor not. 🙂

Joe Chamrin & Dan Esdale win CMN Tournament of Champions

Neward Yee, organizer of the Children’s Miracle Network Tournament of Champions, for which in-league qualifying was going on for the last month, relayed to me that Westgate Mixed teammates Joe Chamrin and Dan Esdale won the 8th annual event yesterday, which was the first held at Westgate Lanes after being located at Boston Bowl in previous years. Chamrin and Esdale defeated Yee and Joe Chan, 429-390 (with handicap) in the final round. Twelve teams qualified, but three were no-shows.

Mr. Yee would like to thank everyone who participated, and hopes the event grows next year.

Danny Khuu sets new Mass. state tournament all-events mark; Khuu, Ferguson bowl 600 game in doubles

Danny Khuu & Jim Ferguson, who bowled a 600 doubles game in the state tournament on May 1 at Greylock Bowl & Golf (Photo by Sean Richard; taken at Westgate Lanes)

A big day at the Massachusetts state tournament at Greylock Bowl & Golf in N. Adams for Danny Khuu began with a 289 game in doubles, but really picked up steam when he and his partner, Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Jim Ferguson, bowled what is thought to be the first 600 doubles game in state tournament history in the second game, after which Danny finished with a 222 for an 811 series. Combined with Jim’s 770, the pair took the doubles lead with a 1,581, which was one pin shy of the state tournament doubles record, set by Steve Blanchet & Jim Sicard two years ago at Brunswick Lowell Lanes.

The day was not over for Khuu, however, as he proceeded to post games of 300, 279, and 236 for an 815 in singles, which may have taken over the lead in that event. He came up relatively short in team, with a 721, but that was still good for a 2,347 all-events score, breaking the state tournament record held by Jeff Fields, also set two years ago in Lowell.

Congrats Danny and Jim! 🙂

Bill Briggs wins NAT One-Ball at Westgate

2016 NAT One-Ball finalists
Finalists of the Northeast Amateur Tournament One-Ball event on Apr. 17 (L-R): Champion Bill Briggs, runner-up George Boudreau (Photo courtesy of NAT)

The Northeast Amateur Tournament, in its updated newsletter, reported Bill Briggs as the winner of the One-Ball event last Sunday at Westgate Lanes after defeating George Boudreau, 239-237 (with handicap), in the final match. The rules of the event required that the same ball be used for first ball and all spares, with re-entries allowed to change balls (but still the same ball in the re-entry squad). Bill Briggs used a Brunswick LT-48 (the re-issue) in his winning effort. Bill was just over a month removed from a Bay State Open doubles win with Tina Gannon at Westgate Lanes.

EDIT: Forgot to add the other Westgate cashers, as I usually do with tournaments at Westgate: Jim Ferguson, Mark Zimmerman, Chris Mark, Mike Litchfield (who was the defending one-ball champ), Eric Lam, Al Donato, and Danny Khuu.

Stephen Major wins JBSC Super Challenge in Auburn

Stephen Major reported to me, and it can be corroborated on the JBSC Facebook group, that he won the U20 boys division of the Junior Bowling Sport Challenge’s year-end Super Challenge Sunday at AMF Auburn Lanes. He defeated Hunter Kempton 190-159 for the title. The tournament was on a very demanding pattern, the 2016 European Youth Championships pattern.

WTG again, Stephen! 🙂

Amie Goodspeed wins RI Ladies Classic at Westgate

RI Ladies Classic Finalists Apr 16 2016
Finalists of the RI Ladies Classic event at Westgate Lanes on Apr. 16 (L-R): Champion Amie Goodspeed, runner-up Shirley Major (Photo courtesy of RI Ladies Classic)

The RI Ladies Classic reported on their Facebook page that Amie Goodspeed, a bowler out of North Bowl Lanes, won the event today at Westgate Lanes, which was rescheduled from January because of weather. Goodspeed defeated the defending champion of this stop, Shirley Major, 216-167 (with handicap; both bowlers were bowling scratch), in the final match. Tina Gannon, seeking a “threepeat” after wins at Alley Katz and Holiday Lanes in Westport (the latter having been previously unreported), was third. There were nine entries.

2016 BBA Madness follow-up

The Brockton Bowling Association has posted the full results from the inaugural BBA Madness tournament on its website, including qualifying results and the full match play bracket.

As for how you can run a tournament with this format, I’m not sure how a tournament bracket can be done in Excel, but qualifying certainly can, with the wins against the field calculated with the formula COUNTIF(A1:A20,”<“&A10), with the range A1:A20 representing the field’s scores in one game and A10 representing one bowler’s score in that game. Ties against the field are similarly calculated (using = instead of <), but be sure to subtract 1 from the function’s result, as the function result will include the cell containing the bowler’s score.

Mark Ames wins inaugural BBA Madness

Exif_JPEG_422
Finalists of the inaugural BBA Madness tournament (L-R): Champion Mark Ames, runner-up Chris Carter

The Brockton Bowling Association held its inaugural BBA Madness tournament today at Westgate Lanes, and Mark Ames, bowling out of Trade Center Bowl in Falmouth, defeated 2011 Brockton Bowling Association Bowler of the Year champion Chris Carter, out of North Bowl, 256-250 (with handicap) in the title match. Ames reached the final match by defeating Eric Derosiers 241-206, while Carter defeated Buddy Wilt, the top qualifier, 256-213 for his spot in the finals. The tournament used what we believe is a new format for qualifying, which was based on wins in each game against the field. There were 31 entries, with the top qualifier getting a bye in the first round of the match play bracket.

Congrats to everyone who cashed, including Sean Lyons, Tim Major, Paul Eklund, and Jeff Carter, the latter who had his second 300 game of the week in the round of 16 in match play. I hope to follow up with full results, including a bit about how we pulled the format off.

Sean Richard bowls 299 in NEBA non-champions at Apple Valley Bowl

Sean Richard related to me before Coke league last night that he had a 299 game in the first round of match play on Sunday in NEBA’s Bowl Winkles Pro Shop Non-Champions at Apple Valley Bowl in Plantsville, CT. I also found it worth noting that the soon-to-be Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer threw the game against another association Hall of Famer, Ryan Yelle. Good work, Seany! 🙂

Shawn Hagan wins NAT doubles in Malden

Mar 20 NAT doubles finalists
Finalists of the Mar. 20 NAT doubles event (L-R): Champions Shawn Hagan & Jeff Fields, runners-up Tyler Scott & Matt Fredette (Photo courtesy of Northeast Amateur Tournament)

The Northeast Amateur Tournament reports in its current newsletter that Coke league bowler Shawn Hagan, with his partner Jeff Fields, won the doubles event held on Mar. 20 at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden after defeating Tyler Scott & Matt Fredette, 1041-979 (with handicap), in the two-game final match. Good work, Shawn! 🙂

8th annual Children’s Miracle Network Tournament of Champions

I’ve never known about this until now, but, for the 8th year, the Children’s Miracle Network is running a Tournament of Champions at Westgate Lanes. It is open to all Westgate Lanes league bowlers, with in-league qualifying running through April 29 and an eliminator finals running on May 1. Entry is $10/team (doubles, with cross-entries allowed), with a grand prize of four loge box tickets to a Red Sox home game. 100% of the proceeds will go to Boston Children’s Hospital through the CMN. You may email Neward Yee for details. Teams should be members of the same league, as the league name will go on the trophy.

Brian Egan wins doubles title in Northeastern Open

The Northeastern Open Bowling Championships, recently concluded at Yankee Lanes in Keene, NH, has posted their unofficial prize list (Word format), and Brian Egan is a presumptive scratch doubles champion with his partner, Chris Sole, and has also placed second in scratch all-events. Some other Westgate bowlers did well, notably Team Khuu (members other than Danny Khuu unknown at this time), which placed second in the scratch team event.

Congrats guys! 🙂

UPDATE: Danny Khuu told me the other members of his team were Sean Richard, Brian Egan, Jim Ferguson, and Dave Chalifoux.

Stephen Major wins JBSC at Cove Lanes

The Junior Bowling Sport Challenge reported on its Facebook group that Stephen Major, a Westgate Lanes product, won the U20 boys division of the event held yesterday at Cove Lanes in Great Barrington. Stephen reported that he defeated Tom Hankey Jr., the U15 boys Junior Gold champion from last year, 202-183, on a modified US Open pattern, which Hankey created for this event.

Congrats Steve! 🙂

Ryan Graywacz wins first NEBA title at Westgate

The New England Bowlers Association reported on their Facebook page that Ryan Graywacz won his first title yesterday at Westgate Lanes after defeating Matt Janas, 254-204, in the final match. Westgate bowlers cashing were Danny Khuu, Sean Richard, Brian Egan, Steve Dale Jr, and Ryan Yelle.

Also, Eric Frost and Nicole Trudell both had 300 games during the 9 AM squad, and Brian Egan used an 11 in a row 290 last game to get into the 9 AM squad cut.
