Ed Ashbaugh bowls 814 in Hyannis

You can make a safe assumption that the David Smith Memorial Classic league in Hyannis is the best tenpin league on Cape Cod. Here’s how I’ll back that assumption up: I’ve mentioned Dave Kullas’ scores in that league before. Now, Ed Ashbaugh, Dave’s teammate in the Pepsi league, joins him, as he had 256-278-280 for an 814 last night in that league. Nice bowling! 🙂

Dec. 20 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 16 bowling, frame-by-frame

Tonight was a weird night overall, as I wasn’t great, but I seemed to welcome the fact that we had to move after the first game due to a scorer issue (right lane wasn’t picking up second-ball scores consistently). I did well enough after the move to eke out my 500 and keep the damage to my average to a minimum.

Result: 145-177-179=501
Average (45 games): 181
Average for last 9 games: 189
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 567

Composite average (90 games): 181

Tom had our only 200 game in the second game, which we won, losing the other two and total. Second place won three points, so they moved into the lead, with my team in second, a point behind (I will still formalize this in a standings update.).

2017-18 Week 15 league standings update

Updating my league standings after Week 15:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning no points from Spare Change, Let’s Mix Em Up leads by a point over Dawg Pound, 1.5 points over Creeden’s Mustangs, and four points over Stuck With Us. Tomorrow night’s opponents are Gutt Er Done, which has three of my four teammates from last season.
  • Sunday Niters: After winning eight points from We Don’t Give a Split, The Three Stooges finished in 5th place for the first half. Ten Is Enough are the first half winners, by six points over Here for the Beer. The league will not bowl on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, so the second half will start for us on Jan. 7 vs. We Don’t Give a Split (yes, again).

Aaron Major wins JBSC at Auburn Lanes

As posted in their Facebook group, Westgate’s Aaron Major, on his Christmas break from Wichita St., won the U20 boys division of the Junior Bowling Sport Challenge yesterday at AMF Auburn Lanes, having defeated Xavier Bamford in the final match (score not available). Congrats Aaron! 🙂

Update: As posted by Tom Hankey Jr. in the JBSC group, the lane condition was the 2016 Junior Gold Woodland Bowl 36′ pattern.

Danny Gauthier bowls 300/800, Adam Johndrow 300 in BBA Holiday Doubles

There were a couple of scores from yesterday’s Brockton Bowling Association Holiday Doubles tournament, the biggest one being a 300-265-235 performance by Danny Gauthier. While he didn’t get an 800, Adam Johndrow also had a 300 game, and we got video of that, which is below:

Congrats guys, and we hope to have full tournament results posted soon.

Dec. 17 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 15 bowling, frame-by-frame

After a tournament day that didn’t go according to plan, I was eager to take my frustration out on the pins, and did it to the tune of my second high series of the season, the high of which also came in this league. I didn’t get off to a good start in the third game, or this might have been better, and you can also point to my single-pin misses as another reason.

Result: 215-243-194=652
Average (45 games): 181
Average for last 9 games: 202
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 589

Composite average (87 games): 181

I carried my team the first two games, and Peter and Ed shot 246 and 200 respectively to help us take the third game by over 100 pins. It was the end of the first half, so we’ll see where we finished.

Link to Tri-State Bowlers added to sidebar

Via the Digital Bowling Society, Justin Sorel’s new Tri-State Bowlers site came to my attention. It appears to be a Timely calendar with bowling events in southern New England, which can be subscribed to (for your own calendars), and events can also be added to it on the site. I gave it a “Local/New England” sidebar link, not being sure if I can merge it with the calendar on this site.

Darrell Guertin wins year-end SEMBA at Westgate

As noted in the above post, Darrell Guertin won a close 207-204 final match with 1999 ABC/USBC Masters champion Brian Boghosian to come away with the title in SEMBA’s year-end event last Sunday at Westgate Lanes. Of 26 qualifying bowlers (needed 4 SEMBA tournaments in 2017), 23 came out to bowl, with SEMBA taking 12 out of qualifying. Lane condition was Kegel Broadway on one lane of a pair, Route 66 on the other.

The post also mentions John Kirker’s 300 game, the second in SEMBA’s brief history, and I had a video, but decided against using it due to extenuating circumstances.

Ryan Yelle rolls 300/805 in Westgate Mixed

I’m not sure if he’s had 300 games here in tournaments (or what is now the Pepsi league), but two-time association Bowler of the Year and Hall of Famer Ryan Yelle had his first one in the Westgate Mixed league last night. Mark Condon recorded the video below for Snapchat, which Sean Richard arranged to have sent to me:

Congrats Ryan! 🙂

Update: An updated standing sheet showed that Ryan Yelle’s 300 game was also part of an 805 series, but the scores were removed from the scoring system by the time I made my inquiry. If the other two games can be determined, I’ll update this.

Update: The three games were 247, 300, and 258.

Dec. 13 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 15 bowling, frame-by-frame

Halfway through the first game, it looked like it would be a disaster, but I managed to take it off the sheet from the 6th frame for my 211, which was enough for an over-average night after a couple of small under-average games. There were a couple of single-pin misses, but I was back to over 80% on those for the night.

Result: 211-176-177=564
Average (42 games): 182
Average for last 9 games: 195
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 567

Composite average (84 games): 180

We had the “one hot opponent” problem tonight, as, if said hot opponent just bowled average, we would have won all four, but lost all four instead. Second place won three, so we’re still in the lead by a point, which will be formalized in the next standings update.

Stephen Major bowls 300 in His & Hers

Stephen Major’s first season as an adult bowler now includes a 300 game, as he posted on Facebook that he had one last night in the His & Hers league. The post included a video by Kevin Thibeault, but, not being sure if I have permission, I’m not sharing it; this post will be updated if I get it.

Update: Stephen gave me permission to use the video (Kevin recorded it on Stephen’s phone), so it is below:

Good bowling! 🙂

2017-18 Week 14 league standings update

The customary Tuesday league standings update:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning three points from Knock Em Down, Let’s Mix Em Up leads by four points over Dawg Pound, 5.5 points over Creeden’s Mustangs, and six points over Stuck With Us. Spare Change will be our opponents tomorrow night. For weekly highs, I had the high handicap game of the week for the men (division highs weren’t available at press time), and I can also report that Ed Miller, a member of both of my leagues, bowled a 706 last week for his first 700 series. 🙂
  • Sunday Niters: After failing to win points from Suzy’s Crew, The Three Stooges are in 6th place, 18 points behind Ten Is Enough, who are two points ahead of Here for the Beer, eight ahead of Suzy’s Crew, and ten ahead of Ball Busterz and We Don’t Give a Split, the latter whom are our opponents Sunday in the second and last position round of the first half.

Dec. 10 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 14 bowling, frame-by-frame

Pretty much regressed to the mean tonight, and, as usual, my spare game didn’t really help, with three missed single pins, two 10s and a 7, and ending the night with three open frames (two splits).

Result: 166-179-152=497
Average (42 games): 178
Average for last 9 games: 190
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 560

Composite average (81 games): 180

Team lost all eight points, with Peter bowling our only deuce game (212) in the third game.

Dec. 6 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 14 bowling, frame-by-frame

If I didn’t already have a 646 earlier in the season, this would have been my high series of the season in this league. I really feel I’ve been rolling it better than ever, and I really haven’t been missing single pin spares (there was one tonight, a 4 pin), as I’ve been near 80%, maybe over, in this run. That has helped me throw first ball with confidence.

Result: 255-204-184=643
Average (39 games): 182
Average for last 9 games: 195
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 582

Composite average (78 games): 180

Ralph’s 202 helped us crush the first game (we won by 186 pins), but we needed to win another game to be sure of three points, and that came in the third game, thanks to Tom’s 230.

2017-18 Week 13 league standings update

The customary Tuesday standings update:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After splitting 2-2 with Sweet Rolls, Let’s Mix Em Up leads by three points over Stuck With Us, four points over Dawg Pound, and 6.5 points over Creeden’s Mustangs. Knock Em Down are tomorrow night’s opponents.
  • Sunday Niters: After winning six points from Ball Busterz, The Three Stooges are in a tie for 4th place with that team and Suzy’s Crew (Sunday night’s opponents), 16 points behind Ten Is Enough, who are 10 points ahead of Here For Beer and 12 ahead of We Don’t Give a Split. The end of the first half looms with a position round next week.

Update: I forgot that I usually post the leaders’ opponents as the end of a half approaches. In Sunday Niters, Ten Is Enough will bowl against Broads With Balls, Here For The Beer is against the vacant Adam & Steve, and We Don’t Give a Split is against Ball Busterz.

Steve Delph wins Bay State Open at Westgate

As noted in the above post, Steve Delph, a bowler out of Kingston Ten Pin, won Saturday’s Bay State Open event at Westgate Lanes, 281-256 (with handicap), over Mike Williams in the final match. The event drew 45 entries, with a number of UBA bowlers staying to bowl it after the matches.

Update: Zach Thompson gave me the list of cashers, and the ones from Westgate were Stan Gibbs, Jim Ferguson, Sean Richard, Jon Hester, and Stan Lewis.

Brian Pinard & John Doran win NAT doubles at Westgate; Chuck Paige shoots 800, Sean Richard 300/804

The Northeast Amateur Tournament posted on their Facebook page that Brian Pinard & John Doran won their handicap doubles event yesterday at Westgate Lanes after defeating Westgate bowlers Chuck Paige & Matt Richard, 448-442 (with handicap), in the final match. Among the other teams qualifying for head-to-head match play were Sean Richard & Jim Ferguson, AJ Voisine (with partner Jayme Silva), Ed Grossett & Mike “Sensae” Reed, and Stan Gibbs & Stephen Major.

In qualifying, Chuck Paige put up a 245-287-268 effort for 800 on the button, which was his first 800 series, and Sean Richard posted 279-225-300 for an 804. Sean’s 300 was his 93rd, and my video of the last strike is below:

In that game, Sean teamed with Jim Ferguson for a 558 doubles game, over the USBC team score reporting threshold.

Congrats all around! 🙂

Jim Ferguson rolls 802 to lead Westgate Warriors over Machine

The Westgate Warriors’ home match against The Machine was Saturday, with the Warriors coming away with a 30-10 net victory. Jim Ferguson played the biggest part in it, going 279-268-255 for an 802 set in scratch, and Danny Khuu (scratch) and Jon Hester (handicap 2) adding a 299 game each.

In a match against the Silver Lane Express, Mike Farrah of the Auburn Maulers had a 300 game at Westgate on Saturday, as well.
