2016-17 Week 30 league standings update

Updating my leagues after Week 30 of the season (including, as always, the virtual league):

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning four points from Minds in the Gutter (my post of Spare Us as last week’s opponents was in error), Lane Ducks are in 10th place, 12.5 points behind Eileen On Me, who are four ahead of Creeden’s Mustangs, six ahead of Sweet Rolls, and seven ahead of Livin’ on a Spare. Has Beens will be tomorrow night’s opponents. I was just a pin short of tying for the high handicap game of the week in the men’s “B” division (Michael Simmons was high with a 270 handicap game).
  • Sunday Niters: After winning six points from OSIMAS, The 3 Stooges are in 3rd place, 13 points behind Here For Beer, who lead We Found “B” by eight points, and Adam & Steve are in 4th, 14 points behind the lead. Avengers will be Sunday night’s opponents.
  • Virtual league: Lane Rangers won all seven from High Flush; with Splits & Washouts winning five, our lead over them increased by eight points, with The Unbowlieveables and Big Guns 2.0 tied for 3rd, 12 points behind.

Kevin Thibeault bowls 300, Rob Young 276 in Coke league

There were a couple of games of note last night in the Coke league, one of them by Kevin Thibeault with a 300 in the third game. I have the video below:

The other was an unusual 11 in a row 276 game bowled by association Hall of Famer Rob Young, in which he left the Greek Church (4-6-7-9-10) in the first frame, picked only a pin out of it, and then had the last 11. Rob actually had 21 in a row, as he followed the 276 up with a 289, but the 800 bid fell short in the last frame of the night. Note: 21 in a row without a 300 game is hard to do.

Good bowling guys! πŸ™‚

Apr. 2 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 26 bowling, frame-by-frameΒ (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My third game was definitely better than my first two, particularly because I couldn’t seem to buy a spare in those two. A bright side is that I did better on my splits than usual, converting one (the 4-9) and picking four out of another (Greek church).

Result: 154-146-181=481
Average (78 games): 174
Average for last 9 games: 161
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 566

Composite average (165 games): 173

After losing the first game, we won the other two and today, with the third game win coming on Harry’s double in the 10th. Harry had a one-open (a 7-10) 761.

More about tonight in the league to come.

Felix Chan wins Bay State Open at Wonder Bowl

I mentioned there was more coming about today’s Bay State Open, and that is that Felix Chan bested a field of 47 for his first title, defeating Jayme Silva Jr., 247-199 (with handicap) in the final match. I shared the video of the final match on the Facebook page as it was streaming live, but it will be below, for those who either may not be on Facebook or may have missed the stream.

The event was a special “Throw the Low” event, with the bowlers bowling five games of qualifying and throwing out their lowest score.

Good bowling today, Felix! πŸ™‚

Link to Monster Bowling added to sidebar

The “Ball Sites” sidebar links category is something I try to take pride in, and I made an addition to the list tonight with Monster Bowling, which I found via Facebook. The Loch Ness Monster appears to be their maiden offering, and they’ll apparently have a list of honor scores bowled with their equipment on their website in the future.

Mar. 29 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 30 bowling, frame-by-frameΒ (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

It was looking like a more or less ordinary night for me after two games, but, after a spare to start, everything just “clicked” and I started carrying, going five in a row, single-pin spare, big-ish split, and then two Brooklyn strikes, which loosened me up enough (particularly knowing the game was in hand) to throw the last two flush. The 244 was my highest game in over three years, the last time I had a game that good coming on Sept. 18, 2013, in which I had both a 259 and a 244 in bowling 665.

Result: 161-162-244=567
Average (87 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 173
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 581

Composite average (162 games): 174

My spare in the 10th first game was important, because we won by a pin on the fill. The second game was not as close, and, as I mentioned, the first strike in the 10th meant the third game win, for all four points.

2016-17 Week 29 league standings update

Updating my leagues after Week 29 of the season (with the virtual league result):

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning two points from Striking Gentlemen, Lane Ducks are tied for 11th with Knock Em Down, and trailing the leading Eileen On Me by 14.5 points. The leaders are ahead of Creeden’s Mustangs by five points, Sweet Rolls by seven points, and Livin’ on a Spare and Has Beens by nine points. Spare Us will be the opposition tomorrow night.
  • Sunday Niters: After winning two points from Bowling Stones, The 3 Stooges are in 4th place, 15 points behind Here For Beer, who lead We Found “B” by 10 points and Adam & Steve by 14 points. OSIMAS are Sunday night’s opponents.
  • Virtual league: Lane Rangers won two of seven from Big Guns 2.0, and Splits & Washouts also only won two, so we maintained our six point lead, with Big Guns 2.0 sevenΒ points behind in 3rd and The Unbowlieveables nine back in 4th. The two points from Big Guns 2.0 came despite Fin09 of that team bowling 268-300-258 for an 826 series. BowlerBill, a member of High Flush, had a 300 game himself, and it was only the second time in the league’s history that two different bowlers posted a 300 game in the same week.

Kyle Egan wins JBSC at Westgate

A post in the Junior Bowling Sport Challenge Facebook groupΒ reported that Westgate youth bowler Kyle Egan was the U20 boys winner in their event yesterday at Westgate Lanes, defeating fellow Westgate youth bowler Stephen Major, 211-165, in the final match. I did get the scores for the stepladders in the four divisions, and the results are below:

U20 Boys

Match 1: Ryan Stolakis def. Andrew McGovern 201-192
Match 2: Stolakis def. Ryan Stanard 204-164
Match 3: Kyle Egan def. Stolakis 182-158
Semifinal: Egan def. Andrew Hall 255-234
Final: Egan def. Stephen Major 211-165

U20/U15 Girls

Match 1: Kaitlynn Crawford def. Madison Gentes 193-170
Match 2: Crawford def. Danielle McKerracher 224-202
Semifinal: Crawford def. Rachel Bamford 199-169
Final: Kasey Kosier def. Crawford 204-203

U15 Boys

Match 1: Xavier Bamford def. Randal Dunbar 203-175
Match 2: Bamford def. Jason Simmons 243-224
Semifinal: Bamford def. Nate Purches 189-162
Final: Bamford def. Bradley Baybutt 204-176

U12 Boys/Girls

Semifinal: Jaden Gagner def. Dennis Goulart 162-158
Final: Andrew Robitaille def. Gagner 149-130

Additionally, Bradley Baybutt, a bowler out of Yankee Lanes in Keene, NH, bowled a 290 game in qualifying, which Sharon Evans reported was the highest game bowled in the JBSC since the tournament went to all sport oil conditions five years ago. The JBSC reported that 54 bowlers, a record for them, came out for the event, including a record eight in the U12 division.

Congrats to all. I’ll update the post when I find out what the lane condition was.

Update: Sharon Evans conducted some research on past game scores in the JBSC and found that Andrew Hall had a 299 on a sport lane condition their first year. Also that year, Allen Halacy had a 300 game, but that was on a modified house shot (as not every lane machine could put out a sport condition at the time).

Update: Per Kevin Thibeault, the lane condition was the 2007 Weber Cup Day 2 pattern (40′).

Mar. 26 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 25 bowling, frame-by-frameΒ (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My match had to be moved to the end pair (61-62) because of a breakdown, and the lanes were playing very differently, as I was well left of where I’ve been playing the last couple of weeks. I had a decent first game, but I was mostly done in by splits in the other two, with three in the second game and two in the third game.

Result: 182-158-155=495
Average (75 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 173
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 600

Composite average (159 games): 173

Harry and Ed both had a 200 game (Harry first & second, Ed third), and with a bowler averaging in (he joined the team that lost Curt Layton), I think we only won the first game.

Greg Andrews shoots 300 in Westgate Mixed

Greg Andrews is getting comfortable in his second full season at Westgate, as, tonight, I’m mentioning him for the fourth time in the season and third in connection to the Westgate Mixed league, as he put up three bills in the second game. Good bowling! πŸ™‚

Update: Thanks to Kimmy Paige, we have a video of Greg’s last strike, which she uploaded to Facebook and I share here:

Mar. 22 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 29 bowling, frame-by-frameΒ (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My night was pretty much saved when I got the idea to play up the track, as I started the third game with four in a row playing that line and hung on for my deuce game. There was no blaming myself for single pin misses tonight, because I only saw four single pins on the night. Of the multi-pin spares, five were splits, one of which I converted.

Result: 189-136-207=532
Average (84 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 166
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 539

Composite average (156 games): 174

Team got crushed in the second game, even with Barry’s 212 (and a deuce was a long time coming for him), but we did win the other two to split the points.

2017 USA Bowling New England qualifier results

The USBC held the New England qualifier for USA Bowling last weekend at Westgate Lanes, and the result sheets (PDF format) are linked below:

U15 division
U12 division

In the U15 division, New England Strikers went 7-1 with 1,810 total pins for the victory, and KTP All Stars went 7-1 with 1,309 total pins in the U12 division. USA Bowling games are Baker format, with four bowlers out of a maximum roster of six bowling. Both teams mentioned have qualified for the national tournament, to be held during Junior Gold week this July in Cleveland.

Update: There was also a double-elimination match play component to the competition on Sunday, and a source told me BuddiesProShop.com All-Stars prevailed in the U12 division and will be the actual New England representative in Cleveland. I’ll endeavor to determine the U15 winner.

Update: New England Strikers also prevailed in match play on Sunday and will be representing New England in the U15 division. Photos of both winning teams were posted on Instagram.

2016-17 Week 28 league standings update

Updating my leagues (including virtual) after Week 28:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning two points from Solid 10, Lane Ducks are 12th place, 14.5 points behind Eileen On Me, who are leading by seven points over Creeden’s Mustangs, eight over Minds in the Gutter, and nine over Sweet Rolls and Has Beens. Striking Gentlemen are tomorrow night’s opponents.
  • Sunday Niters: After winning six points from Pinknockers, The 3 Stooges are in 4th place, 11 points behind Here For Beer, who are 10 points in front of We Found “B” and Adam & Steve. The 3 Stooges face Bowling Stones Sunday night.
  • Virtual league: Lane Rangers won four points from Team Square Balls and are now leading Splits & Washouts by six points, and Dream Team and Big Guns 2.0 by 10 points. Lane Rangers also had the high team series of the week.

Brian Egan, Keith Tantillo perfect in Coke league

The last quarter of the Coke league season started out pretty much the way the third one did, with a couple of 300 games, one in the first game by Brian Egan, and the other in the third game by Keith Tantillo. I tried to get the video of Keith’s game, but forgot to switch my camera back to video mode and took a still photo instead.

Nice bowling guys! πŸ™‚

Update: Thanks to Rich Fulton, I do have a video of Keith’s 300, which is shared below:

Mar. 19 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 24 bowling, frame-by-frameΒ (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I didn’t get the start I did last week, but I was at least better in the other two, with my spare game keeping me hanging on in the third game. I had two missed single pins, but one was an unexpected 8.

Result: 125-184-166=475
Average (72 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 177
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 567

Composite average (153 games): 173

Harry’s 286 first game proved important, as it kept us close, and we won the other two games by enough for total. Harry finished with a 745.

Mar. 15 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 28 bowling, frame-by-frameΒ (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Except for the end of the first game, I was never really comfortable, and there were plenty of missed spare opportunities. Corner pins, especially, were a problem, as I missed six of those.

Result: 173-140-147=460
Average (81 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 164
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 552

Composite average (150 games): 174

We lost the first game, but I was hoping my punch-out in the 10th that game would pay off for total later, and it almost did, as we won the other two games, but lost total by four pins. Barry (514) was high on the team, and both Si and Jeff were also over average on their nights.

Link to Average Joe Reviews added to sidebar

It’s been a while since I added a new YouTube bowling channel to the sidebar, and I came across Average Joe Reviews on Facebook. Most of the current videos in the channel are reviews of recent EBI and Motiv balls, but they’re also venturing into bowling tips, with the first one featuring PWBA Tour player Sandra Gongora on spare shooting. The link is in the “Bowling Streaming/Videos” sidebar category.
