The Bay State Open posted about their event yesterday at Walnut Hill Bowl in Woonsocket, RI, where the winner was Sean Richard, defeating Randal Dunbar by a 234-223 score (with handicap) in the final match. The video is below:
Sean Richard also had a 296 game in qualifying, and he and Danny Khuu both had 300 games during the head-to-head finals.

I set out for today’s practice with the knowledge that the shot has already been changed from Stonehenge, and Kevin Thibeault confirmed for me that the shot is now 2 ft. longer (42′) with a little more volume. As I practiced, I found that my Marvel Pearl was my most playable ball, even with me dragging my Hy-Road out of the closet. I had a 173 with a double in the game I sort of was bowling for score.
Doing some other things in the area after practice, I bumped into my teammate Barry and brought him up to speed on the lane conditions, suggesting his Brunswick LT-48 might still be playable.
As planned, I bowled in my league’s no-tap tournament after the meeting, and found, with the higher surface (the 4000 Abralon), my Fusion was playable. However, some splits and washouts left me under 200 for each the first two games, with a third-game 244 getting me to 614 for the series. I doubted that score would cash, seeing some of the scores on the other lanes.
After bowling, I did learn that it was felt by some (not mentioning any names, because I don’t know them) that the oiling machine wouldn’t be able to put out a consistent shot week-to-week, so they’re going to try a different pattern, one named Stonehenge (link is to top graph), which will have 8 ft. more backend. This probably takes my Fusion out of consideration for this year, but, fortunately, I have plenty of weaker, polished stuff, and my plan is for another practice session this weekend.
Knowing that the new shot was going to be out, I took part of today to begin my preparation for the coming season. Faced with the longest pattern I’ve bowled on to date, one of the suggestions I was given was to take the surface of my IQ Tour Fusion down. Brian Egan thought I’d do well with 3000 Abralon (meaning Abralon pad at 3000 grit), but when I tried that surface on the lanes, I found it a struggle to hold line most of the time (though I had a few decent shots), so I brought the Fusion back into the shop and asked Kevin (Thibeault) to bring it up to 4000 Abralon. I told him I’d pick the ball up tomorrow, but the test of the higher surface will come in my league’s no-tap tournament after the meeting Wednesday.
It was probably a foregone conclusion, but, with the recent publication of the Brockton Bowling Association yearbook for this past season, it became official that Sean Richard, with his 237 in the Patriots league, which was a new Westgate Lanes record average, had earned association high average honors. The 4th page in the linked file has the list of high averages for the season.

Westgate Lanes has announced some of the lane conditions being used by the leagues, including the first third Coke league shot and what will be used for the “house” shot, on their Facebook page. While I don’t know where to find the Coke league’s shot (yet), I can say that Great Wall of China, which is being used for the house shot, is one of Kegel’s new Landmark patterns, and a graph of it can be viewed here. Note: The Facebook post linked above also has information on when the shots will be available for practice during the next week or so.
I can’t say I’ve ever heard of Drew Wilder until today, but, last night, he had a 300 game on the last night of the Monday doubles summer league. Shirley Major didn’t stop at her 300 game, either, as she added a 279 game for her season to finish.

Normally, I don’t post about a tournament away from Westgate Lanes unless a local bowler either wins or does well (in a national tournament), but, this being the first tournament in one of the other Brockton Bowling Association centers in recent memory, I had to make an exception.
Randal Dunbar was the winner of the Bay State Open event yesterday at North Bowl Lanes in N. Attleboro, defeating Corey Hanson by a score of 268-187 (with handicap) in the title match. Kyle Egan and Stan Lewis, both representing Westgate Lanes, were semifinalists. The Bay State Open staff posted the video of the championship match, which is below:
Dunbar and Egan were competing as youth bowlers, so their winnings will be deposited into their SMART scholarship accounts.
The Underground Bowling Association has released the season tour schedule for this season, and I’ll list the Westgate Warriors’ schedule below (if following link, click on “CT-NE” at the bottom for schedule):
The Warriors’ home match on the linked schedule is an error because the schedule is listed as Dec. 6, but it is actually the day before.
Playoff details will be posted here if the Warriors qualify.
Spare Us ended up tied for 14th with Wild Samoans in the final league standings, so, as normally happens, the money involved in 14th and 15th place will be combined and divided equally. This means about $1.25 more per man than we would have received if we didn’t move up at all; you could say my clutch bowling the other night meant $0.625 per game I won for everyone on my team.

This was not such a bad way to end my summer league. I started slow, but made few mistakes once I had the right ball in my hand. As shall be explained below, the end was better than my start in some ways.

My clutch bowling was tested tonight, as I had to double in the 10th second game and mark the third game for the points in those games. I was high on the pair, with only one other bowler on the pair shooting over 400.
I need to see what the result of the match ahead of us was, but I can report that Lost Empire won the league by one point, so congrats to the members of Lost Empire: Joe Tam, Sammy Wong, Dave Chin, Paul Dang, and Ricky Chan (who was a sub for the team).
Checking the BowlerExpress standings (now that Westgate is able to upload again), I saw that “$eany Ka$h” had a 298 game last night in the doubles league, and Dani Barros a 276 game for the women. Good job, you two! 🙂
The Coke Classic league has, in the past, had an 840 cap on teams’ entering averages, but, in a move announced last night on the Westgate Lanes Facebook page, the league will remove the cap on entering averages this season, which they hope attracts more teams to the league. Team entries will be taken right up until the league’s opening night on Sept. 14.
I’ve been waiting for a good time to mention this, but the Westgate Warriors have a friendly rivalry with another Underground Bowling Association team, Mop Nation Militia, which also has some Westgate bowlers in the franchise (Steve Dale Jr., Chuck Paige II, Roland Sandefur, Eric Durden, and Rich Fulton are the Westgate bowlers on the team known to me). Mop Nation Militia was bowling for the UBA Season Tour Championship this weekend at the UBA’s signature event, Battle Bowl, at Brunswick Zone Carolier in N. Brunswick, NJ, eventually finishing runner-up to Synergy.

After earning a 4-4 split with Team 7, Spare Us is in 15th and will bowl against Pinheadz Wednesday night in the league’s position round. We are 16 points clear of our opponents, so we’re assured of not finishing last. With a sweep and a favorable split of the points in the match immediately ahead of us, we can tie either Wild Samoans or Team 7 for 13th.
At the top, Full Strength leads Lost Empire by two points and Doesn’t Matter by four, so the latter team needs to sweep and get a favorable split of the first place match to tie for first.
I peeked my head in briefly this morning, and Kevin Thibeault told me he shot a perfecto last night in the youth doubles league. But it was not the only honor-caliber score in this league: Wonder Bowl’s Tyler Perry, already a legend for what he’s accomplished as a youth bowler, made the Friday league (one of) his summer leagues and, although I don’t have an exact date on it, had a 299 game in the league before he went to Junior Gold.

There was still one bad game, but I did improve with every game, and the third game was clean, so that’s the positive I’ll take out of it.

The 6-10 chop in the second game cost us the points, but I was happy to get out of there with the third game (by 133 pins) and total.
Congrats to Sean Richard and Shirley Major, both with 300 games tonight in the Monday Summer Doubles league. I can’t say definitively, but I believe this to be the first time a male bowler and a female bowler both had perfect games in the same league on the same night at Westgate Lanes. 🙂
After failing to win points from Lost Empire, Spare Us is in 15th (out of 16 teams), and Lost Empire took the league lead based on that, now leading Full Strength by four points, Team 10 by six points, and The Minions and Doesn’t Matter by eight points; our deficit to the lead is 30 points. We bowl against Team 7 next week, the last week before position round. At the top, Lost Empire bowls against Oops, Full Strength against The Minions, Team 10 against Pin Laws, and Doesn’t Matter against Pinheadz.

This was the reverse of last week: Bad first two games, decent third game. Opening up the lane a bit in the third game gave me my best chance, but I made more spares in that game as well.

A lot of the Westgate crew was back at Walnut Hill Bowl for the Tournament Players Series doubles event yesterday, with Kevin Thibeault & Matt Richard besting Danny Khuu & Sean Richard in the title match 460-426 (with handicap). Although I don’t have the scores, Kevin also said on Facebook that he threw his third 800 series (but not sanctioned) during qualifying.

After winning four points from The Minions, Spare Us are in a four-way tie for 12th, 26 points behind Full Strength, who lead Lost Empire (our opponents for this week) by four points and The Minions by six points.
Westgate Lanes will be holding a free Kids Day event on Sat. Aug. 15 from 10 AM to 2 PM, where children ages 5-19 will be able to receive basic instruction from Westgate’s certified coaches, and there will also be an information session for the kids and their parents about the Saturday morning junior program, which begins on Sept. 12 at 9 AM (though everyone is asked to arrive at least a half hour early). As the photo below spells out, registration fee is $15 and league dues are $10/week, with pre-registration (before first day of bowling) getting the first week of bowling free (registration on first day of bowling is $25, including first week’s bowling).

The Northeast Amateur Tournament reported on their Facebook page that Brian Egan won the NAT’s debut at Walnut Hill Bowl in Woonsocket, RI Sunday after defeating Dave Jones 489-477 (with handicap) in the two-game final match. Congrats Brian! 🙂

I did OK early, but with the approaches having been resurfaced, footwork was tricky, and by the time I figured that out, I ran into splits, combined with a cold spare game on other spares.

Teams split the first two games, with our opponents having the advantage for total, and if I had made a pretense at average third game, we win six points, but we did escape with that game for four points.
Noting a couple of high scores by women on July 20, Tina Gannon had a 278 game and Shirley Major a 275 in the Monday Summer Doubles league.
Congrats to John Furtado for a 299 game last night in the summer doubles league.
After winning six points from Has Beens, Spare Us is tied for 12th with Team 8, 24 points behind Full Strength, who lead Team 10 by two points and Lost Empire and The Minions (our opponents Wednesday night) by four points.
With nine entries today, Sean Richard took first with an 843 series, and Tim Major second with 833. I want to say there could be one Monday night, but Junior hasn’t told me.
