It turned out that Jason Sherwood’s 11 in a row last night wasn’t the only one in the Patriots league, as Sean Richard alerted me to one by his son Matt; Matt did get the spare in the first frame for a 290, however. Congrats Matty! 😀
Jason Sherwood throws 11 in a row 279 in Patriots
Tonight, Jason Sherwood shot a 279 game probably the hardest way you can, by missing a 10 pin in the first frame and following that up with the last 11 in a row in the Patriots league. WTG! 🙂
Jan. 7 league night recap
My Week 17 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
The first game had the feel of shaking the rust off after a two-week layoff, but, like the previous league night, I had to make my spares to stay in play, and the only time I strung anything together was in the last two frames. Striking out to end it did save my 500, however.
Result: 149-172-180=501
Average (51 games): 166
Average for last 9 games: 167
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 542
Barry shot the best series I’ve seen him have, a 650, to help us take three points. I’ll still have a standings update for the last week of the first half, but I did learn that “Striking Gentlemen” won the first game to clinch the first half.
In brackets from the previous week, I turned a $3 profit the hard way, by coming in second in four of the five, two to Shawn and two to Carol Andersen.
Link to Bowlers Journal International, RSS feed added
Bowlers Journal International is maybe the oldest sports periodical in the United States, and I’ve long wondered whether they had a website. The good news here is that I’ve finally found it, and of course, it has its digital edition; however, they also have an RSS feed, so I did two things with the discovery: Throw a link to the site in the sidebar (under the “Bowling Sites” category) as well as the RSS feed, which will display 10 stories. Some of the news in the RSS feed duplicates news in other feeds, of course, but I’m hoping different stories will be in the mix, too, and one story different at press time is the signing of Chris and Lynda Barnes to staff contracts by 900 Global, so I’m hoping BJI will be a source of those types of bowling stories.
Westgate Warriors win first ever home match; Shawn Hagan throws 290 game
The Westgate Warriors defeated Pound For Pound 30-10 in their first ever home match by a score of 30-10 (points are given game and series for each match, scratch and two handicap, and also for the overall team total). The effort was paced largely by Shawn Hagan’s 290 game in the second handicap match, though the scratch match, with Sean Richard, Brian Egan, and Danny Khuu competing for the Warriors, was won handily by the Warriors, as well.
Elsewhere in the building, a 300 game was posted by Jesse Pickett, a member of the New England Heat, in the second game.
Jan. 3 Eliminator results
Devon tried something different for this Eliminator and had both scratch and handicap divisions. The final results are listed below:
Scratch Division
- Brian Davis 216
- Jim Clark 191
- Tom Hansen 174
- Tim Hansen 165
Dave Chalifoux and Bob DiMuccio were eliminated in 5th and 6th, respectively, in the first elimination round.
Handicap Division
- Mallory Nutting 273
- Bill Briggs 255
- Tony Attardo 250
- Jackie Purefoy 231
- Jim Ferguson 215
- Tina Gannon 214
Hakim Emmanuel and Al Donato were eliminated in 7th and 8th in the first round, respectively.
In the Warrior Sweeper following, Danny Khuu was the winner, with Sean Richard finishing second.
It should be noted that both afternoon tournaments, both having started within the last year, had a record number of entries yesterday.
Jim Ferguson throws 300 in Walnut Hill marathon
The BBIS marathon wasn’t the only marathon tournament in the New England region today, and a Westgate bowler left his mark in one of those, as Jim Ferguson threw a 300 game in the 2nd four-game block of the 16-game marathon at Walnut Hill Bowl in Woonsocket, RI. Congrats Jim! 😀
Jan. 2015 BBIS marathon results
The results of today’s BBIS 10-game marathon tournament (scores are +/- 2000 after handicap added):
- Yat Voong +397
- Ed Roberts +301
- Rich Brignolo +253
- Louis Lam +249
There were 19 entries. Tim Major left a “fast 8” (4-7) in the first frame of Game 7, then ran the last 11 for a 290, the high game of the tournament.
Thank you to everyone who entered and congratulations to the cashers. The tournament management hopes to plan another one for May or June, after the state tournament.
2014-15 mid-season round-up
With the New Year, I devote the usual post to the high scores for both the men and women at Westgate Lanes during the season in-progress at the unofficial halfway point of the winter season. It will be based on the league standings sheets I have available at press time. High average will be for a minimum of 36 games, and youth bowlers will be included with the adult bowlers if they otherwise qualified.
Men
Average: 234.1; Sean Richard (Thursday Night Patriots, 45 games)
Series: 837; Ray Fischer (His & Hers)
Game: 300; Brian Egan (Coke Classic), Kevin Thibeault (Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen, Saturday Seniors {youth}), Chuck Gerlach, Bob Hamilton (Thursday Night Patriots)
Women
Average: 208.7; Shirley Major (Thursday Night Patriots, 39 games)
Series: 730; Sandi Litchfield (Westgate Mixed)
Game: 300; Sandi Litchfield (Westgate Mixed)
Readers interested in a particular league can check the standings sheets on BowlerExpress at http://www.bowlerexpress.com/4westgate except for the Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen and BBIS leagues, which post only on LeagueSecretary.com (LeagueSecretary.com link is to center index page).
Kevin Thibeault throws 300 in Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen
Technically, Kevin Thibeault is still a youth bowler, but, because he signed a waiver with the USBC in order to do so, could compete in the Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen league, an adult singles league (and singles leagues are the only adult leagues a youth bowler can compete in via the waiver process), and, tonight, he had his 6th career 300 game tonight in the league. Danny Khuu got video of the final two shots of the game, which I’ve uploaded to YouTube and have embedded below:
The lane condition for the league tonight was WTBA Los Angeles.
Congrats Kevin! 😀
RI Ladies Classic to make Westgate Lanes debut Jan. 24
I keep saying that anything that improves opportunities in bowling for women is good for bowling in general, and I’ve recently learned that the RI Ladies Classic, after seeing a number of Massachusetts women entering their tournaments, has chosen to host their next tournament, on Jan. 24, at Westgate Lanes for the first time. They have made a flyer available on their Facebook page, which will be added to the “Local/New England” sidebar list. Note: The entry fee, $40, is waived (free) for first-time RI Ladies Classic participants.
Westgate Lanes debut of UBA set for Jan. 4
I’ve been quiet about it until now, but some of you may have seen references in the sidebar and calendar to the Underground Bowling Association (UBA) in recent weeks. What is the UBA? It’s sort of a travel league, but a lot of urban culture influences the organization. Among other things, bowlers in the UBA are known by their nicknames, much like rappers are known by their stage names (more on this later).
What this has been building up to is that the UBA is about to make its formal Westgate Lanes debut Sunday, and the center’s own UBA team, the Westgate Warriors (their logo is above), will face Pound for Pound in their first home match ever in the UBA. Paris “P-Nyce” Cook is the team’s president, and some of the better Westgate bowlers, including Seany Ka$h (with this nickname being a natural for Sean Richard to use in the UBA), are on the team. Matches consist of one scratch and two handicap match-ups of three bowlers each, with a points system determining the match winner as well as counting in the conference standings (the Westgate Warriors are in the NY/NE Conference). Note: I said formal debut because bowlers in the UBA also participate in head-to-head individual ranking matches, and some of those have already been at Westgate Lanes.
There is much administrivia for this post, including an item that has already been in the sidebar for a couple of months: The UBA’s homepage (under the “Bowling Sites” category). The Westgate Warriors also have their own page, which has been added to the “Local/New England” list. I have also started a “Westgate Warriors” post category for posts related to the team (this post being the first one in the category).
Also, I was hoping to have a special project for the Warriors off the ground by now, which was why I’ve been delaying this post, and I will be an honorary member of the team. Some of the project requirements haven’t been completed, however, and we hope to complete these after Sunday’s match.
Finally, with teams coming in from all over the Northeast, UBA events are actually weekend-long affairs, with side events taking place the Saturday before matches. The Bay State Open and the Eliminator have committed to Saturday afternoon, and in the evening, there will be the inaugural four-game Warrior Sweeper.
Dec. 28 Eliminator results
In today’s edition of The Eliminator, Zach Thompson finished first with a 271 score with handicap (and getting a messenger 10 on the fill ball for the margin of victory), John Hayes Jr. 2nd with a 270, and Dennis Scollins Jr. 3rd with a 259. Bill Polette was eliminated in 4th in the first round.
Dec. 28 CATS note
Larry Lichstein will be at Westgate Lanes for lessons with the CATS system on Jan. 12-15 from 10 AM to 7 PM except for the 14th (10 AM to 6 PM that day). Two-hour lessons are available for $120, and appointments can be made in the pro shop.
Dec. 27 league standings update
After winning two points from “Ebony and Ivories”, “Turkey Hunters” stand in 9th place and will bowl against “Y Not Us” in the last week of the first half on Jan. 7. We could possibly climb to 6th place if the matches ahead of us break favorably. The first half will come down to “Striking Gentlemen” and “Knock Em Down”, as Team 16 is 2.5 points out of the lead in 3rd; “Striking Gentlemen” lead by one over “Knock Em Down”.
Fall 2014 Week 15 virtual league results, final standings
“Pin Seeking Missiles” won just three points from Team 7, but that was enough to prevent that team from winning the championship from 3rd place.
My team ended up tied for 4th with “DJSW”. “Probable Cause” won five of seven from “The Whole 9 Yards” to take the championship from 2nd place. “General Pounder” and “ijohn83” on that team are the league’s first three-time champions, while “bigcall” and “vdubtx” were teammates on a second championship team for the first time in the league’s history.
“Vannman”, a member of Team 7 and participating in the league for the first time, was the league’s average leader with a 233.38 for all 45 possible games.
Dec. 17 league night recap
My Week 16 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
The left lane was tough tonight, but I had a good night by keeping myself in play and making most of my spares, particularly after the first game. Second game was clean, but an ill-timed split to end the night prevented that game from being much over average.
Result: 173-205-167=545
Average (48 games): 166
Average for last 9 games: 184
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 542
Team crushed in the first game thanks to Barry’s 222, but we lost two closer games after that to split the points.
Shawn had the second page of the brackets from two weeks ago, so I can say I beat Shawn in two, Barry in a third, and finished second to Jim Andersen in the other two that week for the $14 profit. It could have been worse last week, but I got $2 back for finishing second to Carol Andersen in a bracket.
My league will be taking two weeks off for the holidays, so I’d like to wish everyone the best of the season.
Dec. 16 league standings update
After winning one point from “Oddballs”, “Turkey Hunters” now stand in 9th place, eight points behind “Knock Em Down”, who are a point ahead of “Striking Gentlemen”, 2.5 ahead of Team 16, and three ahead of “Bowling Stones”. We bowl against “Ebony and Ivories” tomorrow night; for the teams in contention for the first half, “Knock Em Down” will bowl against “Striking Gentlemen”, Team 16 against “Looking For Wood”, and “Bowling Stones” against “Spare Change”.
This is the last week before the break for the holidays, with the last position round for the first half following the break.
Fall 2014 Week 14 virtual league results
“Pin Seeking Missiles” lost all seven to “Wrecking Balls”, who had the high (scratch) team game and series of the week in the virtual league. We’ve been mathematically eliminated from title contention, being six points behind “The Whole 9 Yards”; the race is tight between the top three teams, however, as “Probable Cause” is a point behind and Team 7 a point and a half back in third.
2014 Brunswick Demo Days
Just in time for holiday shopping, the pro shop will be running its annual series of Brunswick Demo Days (Brunswick, DV8, and Radical equipment) during the following hours starting Dec. 15 through Dec. 21: Mon. 5-8 PM, Tue. 4-9 PM, Wed. 5-7 PM, Thur. 11 AM-9 PM, Fri. 6-7:30 PM, Sat. Noon-5 PM, and Sun. 10 AM-5 PM. As an incentive, $100-$200 spent in the pro shop during the week will receive $10 in rewards, $200-$300 $15. See Ray or Kevin in the shop for details.
CATS note: Ray also told me tonight that Larry Lichstein will likely be in with the CATS system Jan. 8-15, and appointments for lessons can be made with Ray.
Link to Pyramid Bowling added to sidebar
I think most of my readers know by now that, while I consider myself mostly loyal to Storm, I do try to keep an exhaustive list of ball manufacturer sites on my sidebar to allow readers to make informed equipment choices. With that in mind, a fairly new company, Pyramid, came to my attention on Facebook today, and, getting their website from their Facebook page, the website link is now in the sidebar in the “Ball sites” links list category.
BBIS marathon entry note
The directors of the BBIS marathon tournament on New Year’s Day made some changes to the rules and have updated the entry form they have at the desk, so I needed to update it in my post about the tournament and on the calendar. The PDF available on both the post and the calendar is the correct one now.
Dec. 10 league night recap
My Week 15 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
After a good week last week, it was back to “business as usual” this week. Leaving five splits in a night isn’t going to cut it, but I missed plenty of other spares, as well.
Result: 154-171-140=465
Average (45 games): 165
Average for last 9 games: 176
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 538
Team only managed to win one point on a night when all three games were won by less than 20 pins.
Shawn thought he had the brackets printed on both sides of a page, but they weren’t, so I don’t have complete results from last week, but I can tell everyone that I won three of them and finished second in the other two I was in for a $14 profit on the night.
Dec. 2014 Junior Bowling Sport Challenge results
First, congrats to Kevin Thibeault, as he won the U20 division again, and Sharon Evans, the tournament director, was kind enough to give me stepladder results for both the U20 and U15 divisions, so those will be below:
U20 Division
Match 1: Tyler Perry def. Bill Clukey 210-180
Match 2: Stephen Major def. Perry 210-162
Match 3: Major def. Andrew Hall 197-147
Semifinal: Major def. Brandon Kirby 186-175
Final: Kevin Thibeault def. Major 186-145
U15 Division
Match 1: Dakota Costa def. Sam Blanchette 176-149
Match 2: Costa def. Ethan Reyes 180-159
Semifinal: Shane Litchfield def. Costa 161-158
Final: Tom Hankey def. Litchfield 202-166
Additionally, congrats to Shane Litchfield on qualifying for Junior Gold next summer in Chicago.
The tournament was contested on the World Bowling Seoul pattern.
Dec. 9 league standings update
After winning all four points from “Mustangs”, “Turkey Hunters” are now 7th, eight points behind “Knock Em Down”, who are a point ahead of “Striking Gentlemen” and three points ahead of “Bowling Stones”. “Oddballs” provide the opposition tomorrow night.
Individually, it turned out I had the second high scratch game of the week last week, and the high handicap series; my scratch series was closer to the high than I thought, as well, as I was just 19 pins behind Brian Egan’s 665. For the year-to-date, I am back in the men’s “A” division, and the four bowlers that have a higher listed scratch series than me are likely to win average prizes, so I’d be in the running for 1st high scratch series in the division.
Fall 2014 Week 13 virtual league results
“Pin Seeking Missiles” had our best week of the season, with the high team game and series of the week, but the effort was “wasted” on the vacant instead of a “real” team. Still, the seven points we won moved us closer to the lead, three points behind “Probable Cause” in 3rd, with two weeks left. “Probable Cause” leads “The Whole 9 Yards” by two points.
Individually, I personally had the high over-average series of the week.
Dec. 6 tournament note
Junior wants to run more tournaments, and the first of those will be a no-tap (9 drop on first ball = strike) shootout on Jan. 17 at 1 PM. Your entry will also include entry for a $500 jackpot, which will be won by seven consecutive nine-drops starting from any frame in any game. Details can be had at the desk, and the tournament has been placed on the blog’s calendar.
Bob Hamilton shoots 300, Sean Richard 299 in Patriots (includes team honor)
Congratulations to Bob Hamilton on a perfect game tonight in the Patriots league; congrats also to Shirley Major, as Tim Major told me she shot 236 in that game, making the game a 536, better than the 526 game they had the week before the Thanksgiving break (and, of course, a mixed doubles honor game). 😀
Congrats also to Sean Richard, with a 299 game tonight! 😀
Henry Webber shoots 299 in Westgate Mixed
Meanwhile, down at the other end of the house, Henry Webber checked in with a 299 game tonight in the Westgate Mixed league. WTG Henry! 😀
Dec. 3 league night recap
My Week 14 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
With my weaker than usual start to the season, I needed a night like tonight to right the ship a little bit. In fact, this was one of the few times I could bowl a 185 and call it a disappointment, because my 700 may have been out there with a repeat of my second game. Still, this was my high set of the season by better than 100 pins.
Result: 225-236-185=646
Average (42 games): 165
Average for last 9 games: 178
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 505
My set was the best one on the pair by better than 120 pins, and we swept the points.
