Ed Roberts impressive in tune-up for World Senior Championships

The USBC reported that Ed Roberts won four gold medals and a silver medal in his final tune-up for the inaugural WTBA World Senior Championships, the Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas at Strikers Lanes in Sunrise, FL. Roberts only failed to win gold in super senior men’s singles, which was won by Mario Boneta of Mexico. He was paired with Dave Hurtt in men’s doubles and Dana Miller-Mackie in mixed doubles, and the other member of the team, which also won gold, was Jacqueline Smith. The other gold medal was in men’s all-events.

Good luck and good bowling to Ed starting Saturday at Red Rock Lanes! 😀

Aug. 5 league standings update

After winning all eight from “Lucky Strikes”, “X Factors” closed the gap to Team 11 (in next-to-last place) to a single point. “Paul’s Carpet” and “4 Horsemen” are now tied for the lead, with “Wyld Stallyns” and “Rose and Thorns” both two points back.

The schedule for the last week before the position round finds my team against “New Beginnings”; at the top of the standings, “Paul’s Carpet” is matched against “Who Gives a Split”, “4 Horsemen” against “Shake and Bake”, “Wyld Stallyns” against “Pinheads”, and “Rose and Thorns” against “Outta Towners”.

July 31 league night recap

My Week 11 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I think I needed this night as much for my ego as anything else after my 112 game last week. I did use what I learned about the lanes that night and stayed with my Fast throughout, with my second game (my second 250 game of the summer) being the highlight game of the night.

Result: 173-250-207=630
Average (33 games): 181
Average for last 9 games: 179
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 555

Liz was the real star of the night for us, as she was threatening a 30-clean night until the 29th frame, when she left a 4-7-10 split (and came fairly close to converting it); team took all eight.

July 30 league standings update

After failing to win points from Team 20, “X Factors”, of course, remained in last place, but the deficit to the rest of the league did not change, as we now trail Team 11 by three points. We are 21 points off the lead, held by “Paul’s Carpet” by two points over “4 Horsemen” and “Wyld Stallyns” and four over “Rose and Thorns”. “X Factors” bowl against “Lucky Strikes” tomorrow night.

Alex Aguiar cashes in 2013 US Open

As reported by the PBA, Alex Aguiar, from Dartmouth, MA, finished 54th after today’s cashers qualifying round at the US Open in Columbus, OH. Elsewhere on the site, Alex was reported with a +23 score after 24 games of qualifying to make the cut in the 61st position, then was able to move up with a +6 block (6 games).

I posted on Facebook that, by coincidence, Alex finished one spot higher than Chris Barnes, and my post was a reference to the last time the PBA Tour was in Norwich, CT, for the Go RV’ing Match Play Championship in March of 2010, a week in which Aguiar knocked Barnes out in the first round of the tournament, then, later in the week, defeated Barnes again in the action match for Xtra Frame.

I’ve been following the action at the US Open all week on Xtra Frame, and the administrivia for this post will be that I’ll add a link to Xtra Frame to the sidebar, under the general “Bowling Sites” category.

July 24 league night recap

My Week 10 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I maybe have a bit of a stubborn streak and, while I’m good at moving when I’m supposed to, I tend to be more stubborn with my ball selection. Tonight, I likely could have avoided a 112 first game, my worst league game in a long time, by balling up to my Fast sooner, though I likely should have actually started with it tonight, as the other two games were more like me.

Result: 112-203-169=484
Average (30 games): 178
Average for last 9 games: 170
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 540

Team lost all eight yet again, to a low average team this time. The last game was on me, because I could have won the game if I had the second strike in the 10th, but I let my arm swing get away and left another washout (I think I had a couple of those early on).

July 23 league standings update

After failing to win points from “4 Horsemen”, “X Factors” fell into last place, three points behind “Fancy Sauce” and 27 points behind the leaders, “Wyld Stallyns”, who are four points ahead of “Paul’s Carpet” and “Rose and Thorns”. We cross lanes with Team 20 tomorrow night.

Kevin Thibeault makes first cut at 2013 Junior Gold

The USBC reported Kevin Thibeault as having made the first cut (after 15 games) at the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships this week in Detroit, the first bowler from Westgate Lanes to do so since Danny Khuu in 2008. Kevin finished 143rd after the first advancers round today, and, given more than 1,000 entries in the under-20 boys division and the fact that three WTBA lane patterns (London, Seoul, and Sydney) were used in three different bowling centers during qualifying, is quite an accomplishment.

Congrats Kev! 😀

July 17 league night recap

My Week 9 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

It was another of “those nights,” as my shoulder turn may have been worse, causing me to miss as bad as you’ll ever see me miss. On the bright side, I did correct it in time to have a clean 192, and I only missed two of 11 single pins (both 10s).

Result: 144-169-192=505
Average (27 games): 180
Average for last 9 games: 175
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 547

It’s tough to win when not one, but two, opponents shoot 700 at you even with negative handicap, and the only game that was even moderately close was the third.

Note about 2013 Youth Open pattern

I’ve noted a number of “hits” from search engines, both this year and in the past, searching on terms similar to “Youth Open oil pattern”, and I believe I get these because I post the pattern (two this year) for the USBC Open Championships, which, of course, is a tournament for adults. In years past, I’ve never found the pattern for the Youth Open, but, for those who find this blog on those search terms, I did find it this year, and I’ll link it here. I hope this also proves useful.

July 15 league standings update

After failing to win points from “Pinheads”, “X Factors” slipped to 19th place (out of 20), five points ahead of “High Rollers”. We are 19 points behind “Wyld Stallyns”, who are two points ahead of “Paul’s Carpet”, “Pinheads”, “IWorkout”, and “Rose and Thorns”. “4 Horsemen” provides the week’s opposition.

Hanging out

It should be said that, while I like bowling and the people I know from bowling, I don’t usually bowl with people I know from bowling outside of leagues and tournaments. Keeping that in mind, I got an opportunity to change that yesterday when one of my winter league mates, Missy Damas, sent out an invitation to her friends on Facebook to join her for bowling this morning. I took her up on it, and we were joined by Mary-Ellen Labelle, my former winter league treasurer.

Renting a pair of lanes for two hours, we had time for four games, and, not being a morning person, I started very slowly, actually having the low game on the pair with a 124. I did improve with each game, however, making an unconventional move after going light by actually moving in and going to my Fast after starting out with the Tropical Breeze. My last game was my best, in the 190s, but Missy had the high game each of my four games; I don’t consider that a disgrace, however, as Missy would be one of the better female bowlers in the Westgate Mixed league if she was still in that league (her real bowling friends, or at least the ones she considers her real ones, bowl in my league).

July 10 league night recap

My Week 8 bowling, frame-by-frame

My problem with the “flying shoulder” cropped up again in the first game, but I was eventually able to get my shoulder under control and bowled one pin over my average.

Result: 163-182-202=547
Average (24 games): 182
Average for last 9 games: 174
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 563

We were giving 163 pins per game to our opponents, and they caught enough of a fire that, while we beat them scratch every game, it was just not by enough to overcome the handicap difference. The net result was that we lost all eight.

Ed Roberts places 4th in TAT Summer Classic; Tyrone Thornton also cashes

True Amateur Tournaments reported Ed Roberts as the 4th place finisher overall, first in the 55 & over scratch division, of the True Amateur Tournaments Summer Classic this week at The Orleans in Las Vegas. The overall champion was Jim Martino of Niagra Falls, NY, with Alex Hoskins of Pocatello, ID finishing second. Tyrone Thornton of Mattapan, MA, who also bowls in the Coke Classic league, also cashed in the 189 & under handicap division.

May 2013 People’s Tournament results

The People’s Tournament reported Eric Durden (Westgate Lanes, 177 avg.) as the winner of the event held on May 19 at Westgate Lanes, defeating Robert Dimuccio Sr. (AMF Lang’s Lanes {RI}, 188 avg.) by a score of 288-167 (with handicap) in the final match. Other Westgate Lanes bowlers cashing were Kris Higgins (3rd, 196 avg.), Stan Lewis (195 avg.), and Brian Alleyne (175 avg.). Edward Hoefler (185 avg.) represented AMF Taunton Lanes among the other cashers.

July 4 outing with brother

People who are familiar with the history of this blog will know that my first bowling outing with my brother in 2007 took place on June 30 of that year, with the date of my post about it, the first ever made to this blog, on July 4. This year, the order reversed, though, as I made my usual anniversary post on Sunday and went bowling with my brother tonight.

As for the actual bowling, it did seem especially during the second game that I was sending a lot of shots wide, and the only way I could seem to cure it was to bring my right foot even with my left in my stance, which closed my shoulders. I left a lot of “junk” in that second game, managing only a 135, while the bookend games were at least close to my current summer league average. My brother was at least consistent, with every game around 120.

6th anniversary post

Six years have now passed since that bowling outing with my brother that started my new bowling life. I won’t say too much except that, in the past year, my purchase of a smartphone expanded what I could do in terms of content, including more video and my first “live” blog from my winter league’s rolloff. Performance-wise, it was a sort of a downer, but I still proved myself capable of a big night a couple of weeks or so ago with a 706.

By happy coincidence, another major life event happened one year ago, as my family confirmed the identity of the person I now call my big sister. I need to note that my niece, who bowls, does so in Special Olympics, due to what was found this year as a rare genetic disorder. I wish I could volunteer in her program, but, where she bowls out of Taunton, travel to her events is difficult. I do hope to support Special Olympics financially however I can.

In closing, I’ll just say thank you to everyone who has and still support me; it is you who keep me going.

June 29 league standings update

I noted in the comment to this week’s league night recap on Facebook that I thought my team split the points, and we, indeed, did, so “X Factors” have, as a result, moved up to 15th place, 13 points behind “Paul’s Carpet”, and that team is two points ahead of four other teams: “4 Horsemen”, Team 10, “Wyld Stallyns”, and “IWorkout”.

I also noted that the league voted to take Wednesday, the night before Independence Day, off, so my team will be bowling against “Pinheads” (again) when the schedule resumes on July 10.

June 26 league night recap

My Week 7 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I had a promising start, but just too many bad shots in the later two games. I missed a couple of 10s, but made three others and all of my other single pins for 80% on the night.

Result: 199-151-176=526
Average (21 games): 182
Average for last 9 games: 192
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 561

Liz and Mike were pretty steady, but whether we won two or four depended on the average of the other team’s new bowler (Some of you know him…I post about him often enough 😉 ).

Arsenal image updated

I just wanted to note here that I finally updated the animation of my arsenal in the sidebar to include the Marvel Pearl, which I had punched up some time ago. I did have to resort to an animated GIF creation site because I was having trouble getting the animation to save properly if I used GIMPShop 2.8.

Rich Fulton, Danny Khuu cash in PBA regional in Yonkers, NY

The PBA reported that Westgate Lanes bowlers Rich Fulton and Danny Khuu cashed in the PBA Homefield Bowl Eastern Open regional event held on June 22 an 23 in Yonkers, NY. Rich posted a score of +140 (eight game qualifying block) for 26th place while Danny Khuu was right behind him in 27th with a +134 score. Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, NY was reported as the winner of the tournament, posting a 300 game in the title match while defeating Anthony Pepe of Jackson Heights, NY, who had a 201. The event was contested on the Viper pattern.

2013 Mass. open state tournament results

The Greater Boston Bowling Association has posted official results of the 2013 open state tournament (in Microsoft Word format), which has concluded at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden, and, as usual, I’ll recognize the state champions below. Note: Since no geographic or association data is included in the file, I’ll note Brockton Bowling Association members known to me with an asterisk.

Scratch team: Fourth Arrow Trucking 3,430*
Handicap team: Dazed & Confused 3,823*
Scratch doubles: Corey & Dave Umbrello 1,536
Handicap doubles: Al Rue & Devon McGregor 1,694*
Scratch singles: Brian Perry 771
Handicap singles: Dan Robinson 892*
Scratch all-events: John Zawalich 2,202
Handicap all-events: Dan Robinson 2,599*

Fourth Arrow Trucking had Brockton Bowling Association members Ed Roberts and Gordon Strain, while Dazed & Confused was composed of Rob Young, Willie Crocker, Brian “Hawk” Earle, Tim Larkin, and Pat Carrara (not necessarily in lineup order).

Congrats to this year’s state champions! 😀
