June 19 league night recap

My Week 6 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Really, the difference physically between last week and this week was that I was sleep-deprived last week. You might not think you bowl well in that state, but when I asked Ray about it after bowling tonight, he told me there was something to that, because you tend to be more relaxed when you’re sleep-deprived. I don’t know if this is something I want to try to do intentionally, however, because I also know that quality of sleep is also a good indicator of one’s overall mental health; I do have a mental illness, and I’ve told some of the bowlers I know the specific one (it is being managed with medication).

Result: 165-166-169=500
Average (18 games): 183
Average for last 9 games: 195
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 559

Team won the first two games, but then the opponents won the third game comfortably for an even split of four points each.

June 17 practice

I got to practice today, and I decided not so much to work on my physical game, but, with me having left a couple of 10s in league last week, I wanted to see if my Fast would carry any better than my Tropical Breeze. I just used the first game to warm up with the Tropical Breeze, then pulled out my Fast for the second game. I did see that my carry was pretty much the same, and maybe even the Tropical Breeze was carrying slightly better, so it turned out I had the right ball in my hands at the right time.

June 15 league standings update

After winning seven of eight from “Outta Towners”, “X Factors” moved into 16th place, 17 points behind Team 10, who are two ahead of “IWorkout” and four ahead of Team 12. We bowl against “Shake and Bake” in the coming week.

Individually, I managed the second high scratch series this past week, just three pins behind Jim Young, whose third game I mentioned in the comments on my post about the past week.

One off (June 12 league night recap)

Sean Richard kind of spoiled this on Facebook for most of you…

My Week 5 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

It’s amazing what happens when you concentrate on the simple things, and all I was thinking most of the night was “Ring finger. Ring finger.” The result was a night that was my third 700, one pin off of my personal best series, and with my best league game since Apr. 20, 2011. Would have liked to have covered two of my 10s, but I had only one open in each game (the other a light 7-10 that got no messenger love). And it was a rare night in another way: All three games were over 200, and I hadn’t done that in a few years.

Result: 203-257-246=706
Average (15 games): 187
Average for last 9 games: 198
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 579

We had another strong team tonight, and with me going so well, I didn’t need my teammates much, but I still got at least one game over average from everyone. Team took seven of eight after tying the first game, and I got the tie by striking out in the 10th (and knowing I needed to to tie, which provided a shot of confidence that carried me the rest of the night).

2012-13 season recap

With the Coke league season, lengthened on the calendar by the holidays and Hurricane Sandy, now completed, I can put up my usual post acknowledging the top performers in Westgate Lanes leagues during the season. Of course, the following rules are used:

  • Average is based on a minimum of 72 games in the league.
  • Youth bowlers are included with the adults of their gender where appropriate.
  • I tried to consider the first three games of a series in the leagues that bowl four games in a series (Tue. Scratch Sportsmen and BBIS).

Men

Average: 236.79; Jason Sherwood (Thursday Night Patriots)
Series: 816; Sean Richard (Westgate Mixed)
Game: 300; Alex Major, Tim Riordan (Coke Classic), Henry Webber (His & Hers; as pacer), Harry Thibeault, Mike Johnson, Roland Sandefur, Ed Alfieri, Steve Healy (Westgate Mixed), Dana Gomes (Brunswick Mixed), Jeff Carter (Thursday Handicap Doubles), Dan Esdale (2), Sean Richard (2), Chuck Gerlach, Roy Ellis, Carl Hanson, John Benenato, Mike Trent, Jason Sherwood (Thursday Night Patriots), Kevin Thibeault, Nick Sauve (Saturday Seniors {youth})

Women

Average: 208.75; Sandi Litchfield (Westgate Mixed)
Series: 749; Sandi Litchfield (Westgate Mixed)
Game: 300; Melissa Peterson (Westgate Mixed)

Readers interested in a particular league should find the league in the index on Bowler Express (except for Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen, which only posts on LeagueSecretary.com).

Note: As mentioned previously, Jason Sherwood’s average is the new Westgate Lanes house record.

Cross-training #213

It’s been a while since I made one of these posts, but I felt I needed to make this one with the Boston area connection…

According to NESN.com, Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz and his wife Lindsay have formed the Clay Buchholz Foundation, the first event for which will be “Buchholz Bowl” on July 18 at the Lucky Strike Lanes on Landsdowne St. across from Fenway Park. The event will benefit “Pitching In For Kids”, which provides scholarships to underprivileged children, and “Christopher’s Haven”, which houses children undergoing cancer treatment. The above article has video of the Buchholzs discussing the event with NESN’s Jenny Dell.

June 5 league night recap

My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I would have felt better about my night if I didn’t butcher my single pins (only made one of five), but I did manage two games over my average and got my +2.

Result: 182-196-171=549
Average (12 games): 174
Average for last 9 games: 178
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 526

Team eked out the first game, but lost the other two, the third game handily.

Chuck Gerlach, whom I’ve never had the pleasure of crossing lanes with until tonight, subbed on the other team and had some good things to say about my game at the end of the night, but more about Chuck in my next post. 😉

May 29 league night recap

My Week 3 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I threw some poor shots in the first game, which I eventually traced to a timing issue by the second game. A promising trend so far in this league is that I’ve only missed four single pin spares in nine games.

Result: 159-191-177=527
Average (9 games): 172
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 526

As a team, we couldn’t get much going as far as running strikes, and we lost all eight. Dave had a 200 third game, and he told me he’s been in that territory before.

May 29 league standings update

After winning only two points from “Pinheads”, “X Factors” are in a five-way tie for 11th, ten points behind “Who Gives a Split”, who are the remaining unbeaten team. The leaders are two points ahead of Team 12. “X Factors” bowl against “Wyld Stallyns” tonight.

May 28 practice (with follow-up on Aguiar)

My brother told me he’s going to be making more weekend visits once Harvard lets out of school, so, with Saturday mornings being taken out of play for practice, I needed to find a weekday suitable for morning practice, and decided that Tuesday was as good as any day and practiced this morning. While I couldn’t use the “too early” excuse because of my two Saturday mornings alone, I didn’t get my game together until the third game and shot 210, though it should be said that I had a 224 possible in the 10th frame.

Alex Aguiar follow-up: I’ve been meaning to note that Alex Aguiar lost the Regular Doubles lead at the USBC Open last week to a team from Missouri. While he won’t get his eagle, I’m sure he was very pleased with leaving Reno with the lead and knew it was out of his hands from that point. He will participate in the World Series of Bowling this fall, saying on the social media that he would if he didn’t have to defend the doubles title next year.

May 25 outing with brother

With my brother in Brockton for the holiday weekend, we made some bowling time for the first time since last August. If you’ll recall, I usually treat these as a practice session, keying on my release this time around. What was the “Aha!” moment last Saturday was finally figuring out what John Jowdy really means by leading with the ring finger, and, when I do, I do get the extra revolution I need to carry the 10. Alas, though, my complete game wasn’t there, as I was falling off of many shots and throwing across my body on others. The three game score was 518-363, with me just missing my winter league average series and my brother getting a 142 high game to end it.

May 22 league night recap

My Week 2 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My big problem was not stringing strikes together tonight, but, where I only missed one spare that wasn’t a split or washout, my spare game mostly saved me. Particularly, I left seven 10 pins tonight, and didn’t miss (the easy miss was a single 7).

Result: 179-184-167=530
Average (6 games): 170
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 516

Mike joined us tonight, but two of us couldn’t repeat last week, so we were crushed in two of the games, winning only the second.

May 20 Coke league note

A bowler of some note was subbing on the Budgen Electric team in the Coke league tonight: John Gant, who I was told, and confirmed on Wikipedia, won the PBA’s Tournament of Champions in 1997 by defeating Mike Aulby by a 208-187 score (though Ray thought his win was in the 1970s). We will be seeing plenty of John in the future, as he has moved to the area for the long-term (his wife is a doctor, and her career has taken her to one of the area hospitals) and will probably at least bowl the Coke league full-time in the fall.

2013 Brunswick Mixed banquet

I was hoping to post last night, but the place where we were didn’t have wifi, and I’m kind of shy about using the 3G connection on my phone.

About the only thing different this year was that there was a large enough prize fund so that every team got a team prize apart from point money, and my team was awarded 2nd high handicap game, which we shot 1,110 for. My individual prize was men’s “B” high scratch series, which was my 648 of the “Turkey Shoot” night.

No photo of the champion team coming, as they were missing a member at the banquet, but I will recognize them by name here: Courtney Harris, Durell Gomes, Dwayne Gomes, Dana Gomes, and Ed Godino III.

May 18 practice

My practice session started slow, with a 155 game, but I really had an “Aha!” moment in the 10th frame and, while not striking out to end it, I started the next game well, went a clean 237, then ended with a 224 that might have been in the 240s if not for a couple of single-pin misses. All told, it was a 616 series, which was even better than last week. I’m happy I’ve been practicing well…just need to bring that to league now. 😀

My league’s banquet is tonight, and I will have my phone with me, so I’m hoping I can post from the site (maybe including a photo or two).

May 15 league night recap (first night of Summer 2013)

Liz and Mike DiBenedetto are bowling this summer, so it was natural for me to ask Liz (but not Mike, who was sick tonight) to have them join my team. Our fourth is Dave Currier, who bowls winter league in the ENE Systems league on Wednesday night (one of the leagues by the desk) as well as the Sunday Niters league. Both Liz and Dave liked my idea of “X Factors” for our team name.

My Week 1 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My second game was a result of distracted bowling while resolving a matter of a missing pay envelope, and I had a better third game once we knew that I did, in fact, give the envelope to Donna.

Result: 169-135-189=493
Average (3 games): 164
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 497

Both Liz and Dave were over their entering averages every game (we took the 150 vacant tonight in the absence of Mike). We were hopeful of splitting 4-4, bowling against Eileen’s team. Eileen, for her part, had her first clean game in the second game.

As the administrivia of this post, I am giving BowlingTracker.com another go, as the spam activity seems to have ebbed, putting the new stat sheet in the “Author’s links” portion of the sidebar. This will start the summer links transition.

April 2013 People’s Tournament results

The People’s Tournament reported that Wayne Cleary (AMF Chicopee Lanes, 209 avg.) was the winner of the event held on Apr. 21 at Westgate Lanes. Cleary defeated Brent Watkins (Lanes & Games, 150 avg.) by a score (with handicap) of 207-190 in the title match. Representing Westgate Lanes, Josh Skuby (170 avg.) made the semifinals, while Kris Higgins (196 avg.), April Raines (177 avg.), Paris Cook (203 avg.), and Elliot Miller (180 avg.) also cashed.
