The next fundraiser at Westgate Lanes for the Jimmy Fund, which has been rescheduled from tonight (Apr. 11), will take place on Thur. May 2 with registration at 6:30 PM. I saw it noted on the Facebook event that kids are welcome to bowl, so people can make it a fun family night, as well.

Henry Webber throws 300 game in His & Hers
Henry Webber threw what may have been (and I’ll try to confirm) his first sanctioned 300 game last night while pacing in the His & Hers league. There are two parts to the full story of this game. The first is that Henry’s father passed away last week and Henry wanted to do it for him.
The other part is that Henry originally thought the game would not be sanctioned and not be eligible for awards. He didn’t that is, until I saw Henry’s photo post on Facebook and told him about USBC Rule 107d (I had to look it up to make sure I had the rule number right), which states, among other things, that scores thrown by USBC members while pacing in sanctioned leagues are eligible for all individual awards, including high score awards like the 300 game. Henry told me today that the league officials had to consult Bob Young to make sure I had the rule correct, but Bob was able to confirm it.
Congrats Henry! 😀
Apr. 10 league night recap
My Week 32 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
From a shot quality standpoint, it was one of those nights that I wished every frame was the 10th, as I seemed to make my best shots in that frame every game and not getting my leverage a lot of the time the rest of the game. As a result, I left a lot of junk, having only two single pins to shoot at all night (I made both, one in each corner.).
Result: 164-159-181=504
Average (96 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 171
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 558
Brian provided the team highlight of the night with his first deuce game, a 210 in the first game. Team also took the lion’s share of the points (three of four).
Apr. 2013 Jimmy Fund fundraiser to be rescheduled
The Jimmy Fund fundraiser originally scheduled for Thursday (Apr. 11) will be rescheduled for a later date to be announced. My apologies if you made plans to participate.
Tim Riordan fires perfecto in Coke league
Congrats to Tim Riordan on just the second 300 game of the season in the Coke Classic League last night (Alex Major had the other one). I was down the other end of the house when the final strikes were thrown, so I missed getting video, but there may be some video later from another source.
The return of PB3
Sorry if this wasn’t announced beforehand (I didn’t know his wishes on this matter.), but Parker Bohn III returned for a visit to Westgate Lanes last night. He was bowling on lanes 51 and 52 when I got there, and he had a large crowd gathered in the spectator area watching him. He was throwing a mix of good and bad shots, but, after a couple of the bad ones, I saw him convert first a 3-6-7-9 (lefty), then a 6-8, making the latter conversion look really easy. Junior also got on the PA at one point while Parker was bowling to joke that Parker would be subbing on Brian Gaskill’s team in the Coke league that night.
Afterward, some of our older youth bowlers got to meet and greet Parker, and he obliged with autographs and photo opportunities. Later, Stephen Major remarked to me about how he was talking to Parker while he was bowling and helped him get lined up; I complimented Steve, saying it showed that he had a good mind for the game in helping another bowler (even one as legendary as Parker), and that that was what team bowling is about.
Parker will be at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden on Saturday, running the Brunswick ball seminar in connection with the Next Level clinic, at which Norm Duke will be the featured pro.
Coke Classic League bowlers to appear on BowlTV
Three of the Coke league bowlers, David Chalifoux, Stephen Dale Jr., and Brian Gaskill, will get worldwide exposure Saturday night at 10 PM ET when their team makes their appearance at the USBC Open Championships. The team happens to be the companion team for Cambridge 1, one of the best teams year after year at the Open, which features Team USA’s Shannon and Bryan O’Keefe (as well as NEBA champions Bill Webb and Chris Viale), and their team event will be streamed for BowlTV, the USBC’s YouTube channel.
Be sure to watch! 😀
Rich Fulton wins 1st NEBA title; Danny Khuu throws 300 game
NEBA reported that Westgate Lanes bowler Rich Fulton won his first title today in the non-champions event held at Apple Valley Bowl in Plantsville, CT. In the final match, Fulton defeated Jim Handy by a score of 221-185.
Also, Danny Khuu threw a perfect game during qualifying en route to leading his squad. Other Westgate Lanes league bowlers cashing in the event, according to the posted match play results, were David Chalifoux and Keith Tantillo.
2013 Westgate Memorial Scholarship Tournament results
The annual scholarship tournament at Westgate Lanes took place yesterday, with the results below (scores are with handicap):
Boys
- Kyle Major 751 ($500)
- Joe Warmington 739 ($250)
Girls
- Jessie Hanning 748 ($500)
Congrats to the three of you! 😀
Apr. 7 practice
I was intending to afterward, anyway, but with my board meeting being called off this morning after only three of us showed up, I actually took a practice lane for the first time in months. Mostly, I was intending on practicing my left side spare game, and, with his wife running Tri-City’s annual membership meeting today, Steve Hamilton was able to watch me and helped me get lined up on that left side.
He also brought up some physical game points, including the usual early turn, but also including my slow ball speed. He suggested that I needed to be faster, so I did the most obvious thing to me and stood further back on the approach, which forces me to quicken my feet. I did throw better shots toward the end, but, during the session, I brought up dropping myself down in ball weight, and he told me he has had to do that himself. Ray likes me at 15 lbs. and I may not want to buy all new equipment, so I’ll see how I do making other changes first.
Apr. 7 league standings update
After splitting two and two with “Heavy Metal”, “Spare Parts” moved up to 12th place, a half point ahead of “Angry Birds” and two behind “Bowling Stones” for 11th. Our deficit to the lead, held by “The Incredibowls” is 11 points. “The Incredibowls” lead by three over “The 5 G’s” and four over six other teams, led by “Dee’s Boys III” and including “Kickin Ass”, our opponents on Wednesday night.
2013 state youth tournament note
Rosemarie Hamilton has informed me that the Westgate Lanes youth bowlers will appear in their state tournament, taking place at Ken’s Bowl in Pittsfield, on the weekend of May 4 & 5. Good luck kids! 😀
Apr. 2013 Jimmy Fund fundraiser note
There hasn’t been one in a while, but the next bowling fundraiser at Westgate Lanes for the Jimmy Fund will be held this coming Thursday (Apr. 11) with registration at 6:30 PM.
Bob Hamilton posts 298 in Westgate Mixed
I was probably well away from the action, but I did see Bob Hamilton’s daughter post on Facebook that he had an 11 in a row 298 game tonight in the Westgate Mixed league. Congrats Bob! 😀
Apr. 3 league night recap
My Week 31 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
The positives I’ll take out of this one? I closed games well enough, and put enough together in the third game for my best league game (and first deuce game) in over a month.
Result: 164-167-201=532
Average (93 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 173
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 543
Team pulled off a repeat of last week, winning the third game by enough for total for two points.
Last week, in brackets, Liz got me back for the previous week, winning the bracket I was still alive in in the third game; as usual, I got the $2 back for second in that bracket.
Apr. 2 league standings update
After splitting two and two with “Dee’s Boys III”, “Spare Parts” remanined in 13th place, but now four points ahead of “The Mustangs” and a point and a half behind “Angry Birds”. We are still 11 points behind “The Incredibowls”, who lead both “Dee’s Boys III” and “Split Happens” by three points. My team bowls against “Heavy Metal” tomorrow night.
2013 Brockton Bowling Association city tournament official results
The Brockton Bowling Association has made the results of the 51st city tournament official, and can be viewed on the PDF file linked here. Congrats to all of the cashers, particularly my cousins, Dave and Debbie Randall, who both cashed in singles, as well as Debbie also cashing in the team event (with Esdale’s Raiders). 😀
AJ Voisine posts 299 game in Sunday Niters
Congrats to AJ Voisine, with an 11 in a row 299 game in the Sunday Niters league last weekend. 😀
Winter 2013 Week 10 virtual league results
“The Four Stooges” won all seven in the position round from “The Fifth Element”, meaning our final margin of victory was 17 points, as the latter team was able to stay in second place. I remarked in my team’s thread that we “bowled” like Secretariat ran a horse race…slow out of the gate, but winning going away, like Secretariat’s famous Belmont Stakes performance.
The reason this post was delayed was that “X-Rated” posted a higher series score in the last week than “Don’t Look Ethel” did in setting the four-man series record in the league in Week 9, but did so with an “absent” bowler’s blind score figured into the total. As the previous record was “bowled” with all four bowlers submitting, I didn’t think it fair to either team to uphold one score or the other, and the USBC rule on high team score awards is that high scores bowled with an absent bowler get dropped down to the next lower class, such as four-man when the team normally bowls with five; as we’ve never had a trios league, however, this was not ideal. I eventually took “Joe Bowler’s” suggestion to keep the Week 9 score as the official record, but note the Week 10 score on our “Honor Roll” page. It is worth mentioning that the “absent” bowler would have only needed a series score of 454, or 77 pins under his average series, for his team to equal the official record.
My first bracket win
I should explain something for the non-bowlers who are reading this, first: Brackets are a form of side action in bowling in which the bowler pays a fee for each bracket he wants to enter, then is drawn into a tournament bracket randomly with seven other bowlers. The idea is to beat the bowler you’re matched up against each game, with the last two in the bracket getting money back (the others are said to have “donated”). The bracket winner, of course, gets more than the second place bowler, and the person running the brackets usually gets to keep a small amount from the brackets for his time and computer use (brackets were unheard of in bowling before computers came into wide use). Note: The USBC will allow brackets to be run in sanctioned competition because the decision is ultimately based on “merit pinfall”, even though there’s an element of chance in the bracket draw; indeed, brackets are offered at the USBC Open Championships, as well as probably most state and local association tournaments.
I had known about brackets since about the time I knew about the new tournaments in the area (particularly the People’s Tournament), but it was only last season that Shawn got bracket software and began offering $1 handicap brackets in my league. I had occasionally thrown $5 in just to make it interesting, but started entering brackets more regularly recently.
I had won $2 on a few occasions for coming in second in a bracket previously, but my breakthrough was last week, and the reader is directed to this PDF file, which shows the bracket results for last week. The key bracket is the last one in the file, in which I defeated, in order, Al Cochrane, Carol Andersen, and Liz DiBenedetto for my first ever win in a bracket. The $5 for winning the bracket meant I broke even for the week. From here on, I’ll mention any bracket winnings for the previous week in my league night recaps, and will probably post a PDF again the first time I turn a profit for a night.
Mar. 27 league night recap
My Week 30 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
I was looking decent after two games, but then the wheels fell off after a 2/2 parallel move in looked promising, but then wasn’t making it to the pocket; moving 1/1 back out found the pocket again, but it was too late by then.
Result: 180-181-143=504
Average (90 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 164
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 556
Oddly enough, the game my wheels fell off was the game my team won, and, thanks to my 10th frame recovery, it was by enough for total pins for two points on the night.
I may have a post to make related to last week soon, as it’s a first for me in my new bowling life.
2013 city tournament unofficial results posted
After experiencing computer problems at the association office, the Brockton Bowling Association has posted the unofficial results of the 51st city tournament (in PDF format). The association hopes to make the results official soon.
You will note that my team finished 15th with handicap, but, with 26 entries in the team event, I highly doubt we did well enough to cash.
Mar. 25 league standings update
After a sweep of “Sweet Rolls”, “Spare Parts” stand in 13th place, two points behind “Bowling Stones” for 12th and 11 points behind the leading “The Incredibowls”; that team leads “Heavy Metal” by two points and “Dee’s Boys III” (our opponents this week) and “Split Happens” by three points.
Mar. 17 NAT recap
(Note: The following is a recap of a tournament in which the author of this blog participated.)
The Northeast Amateur Tournament reported that Rich LeCain was the winner of the event held on Mar. 17 at Westgate Lanes. Rich defeated Todd Letourneau by a score of 254-223 (with handicap) in the final match. Cashers that I recognize as Westgate Lanes league bowlers were Gary Patten (3rd place), Keith Tantillo (4th place), Jason Sherwood, Rick Fallon, Matt Richard, Sean Richard, and Hakim Emmanuel (Eric Lam may have cashed, as well, but I am not sure if his name is spelled incorrectly on the page.).
Danny Khuu posts 11 in a row 290 in Sportsmen league
I’m usually good with checking LeagueSecretary.com for results from the Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen league, but somehow I missed the Mar. 12 results until today, and noticed in the following week’s standings sheet (from which I traced the archived sheets to get the date) that Danny Khuu had an 11 in a row 290 game that night. When I asked him about it on Facebook, Danny told me that the league was on the WTBA Los Angeles pattern that night.
Congrats Danny! 😀
Ed Roberts named to Team USA for World Senior Championships
The USBC announced today that Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Ed Roberts will be one of four men and four women who will represent the USA at the inaugural WTBA World Senior Championships, to be held Aug. 10-16 at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas. Ed will be joined on the men’s team by PBA and USBC Hall of Famer Del Ballard Jr., Ron Mohr, and Hugh Miller, as selected by the Team USA coaching staff.
Harry Thibeault throws 299 game in Westgate Mixed
During the first game, I was informed by Sean Richard that Harry Thibeault had the front nine, and, when I asked him how the game ended up at the end of the night, Harry told me he had the first 11 and a 299 game. Congrats Harry! 😀
Mar. 20 league night recap
My Week 29 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
Hoping to build on my good tournament outing on Sunday, I will accept this night. The lanes turned pretty bad quickly, and I found my adjustment on the left lane in the third game four frames too late. However, if I’m leaving six 10 pins and making them all, I can still call it a good night.
Result: 195-157-176=528
Average (87 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 164
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 541
Team took all four, including the third game handily. Carl and Berta were both over average on the night.
2013 MAUSBCYA youth leader doubles results

USBC Youth Association has released unofficial results of the annual youth leader doubles tournament, which was conducted Saturday at AMF Taunton Lanes, and the following were champions from Westgate Lanes: Cody & Shane Litchfield (11 & under boys, handicapped), Alyson Cochrane & Rylee Walsh (11 & under girls, handicapped), Aaron & Stephen Major (12 & over boys, handicapped), and Nick Sauve & Kevin Thibeault (scratch). Congrats to all of you! 😀
