Photos added to “scrapbook”; page added

I’ve been meaning to add more photos to the “scrapbook”, and I noticed that Junior has been taking some with his new tablet for the Westgate Lanes Facebook page. I got his permission (on at least one of them; if he doesn’t want others on it, he can let me know and I’ll remove them) to repost them here. I have a photo of the Westgate 1 travel league team this year (who won the league), as well as photos of the winning teams of the first two thirds of the current Coke league season.

Also, to prevent slow-loading and possible browser crashes from pages having too many photos, I decided to cap the number of photos on each page at 20, and, having reached that number on the original page, created a second page off of the main “scrapbook” page (which has both of the Coke league teams on it).

“The Four Stooges” clinch Winter 2013 virtual league championship

“The Four Stooges” won all seven points from “Front 9”, while “The Fifth Element” won five from “Jocks Rolling Rocks”; needing only to win as many points as “The Fifth Element”, this gives “The Four Stooges” the virtual league title. Thank you to my teammates, “dgordon0408”, “mmalsed”, and “slowdown” for mostly picking me up during the league’s run. 🙂

Week 9 in the league was eventful in more ways than one, as the aforementioned “The Fifth Element” did set a new league record four-man team game; additionally, “Don’t Look Ethel” set a new league record four-man team series, and “Chuck” from “X-Rated” had his second 300 game of the winter virtual league session. The league averaged better than 209 last week, which is the highest league-at-large weekly average since I’ve started keeping track of it on the standings sheet.

My NAT debut

I’ve had this date circled on my bowling calendar since the Northeast Amateur Tournament announced their newly-acquired USBC certification, as this was their first Westgate Lanes tournament since then, and I wanted to make my debut in the NAT at “home.” I hung around the first squad (10 AM), having breakfast while doing so, then signed up about when they opened for the 1 PM squad. I knew the NAT bowls on whatever the THS (Typical House Shot) is where they’re running tournaments, but I also knew I needed to bowl much better than I have been bowling in league to have a chance.

My qualification attempt, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

All I can say is I gave my best, and scored better than I have in months in the first game, which was clean. The third game was my undoing, as I couldn’t stay off the nose, particularly on Lane 43, but, other than the five splits, my spare game was excellent, and is where I need it to be in league.

The cut in the 49-under (age) division in my squad was 751, meaning I missed by 72 pins, but I told the bowlers I knew I thought I had a respectable showing, and they largely agreed with me. I told Jay, the tournament director, that I’d definitely bowl this again. I might think about bowling the first squad, however: Fresher oil may help me stay in the pocket.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake event slated for Apr. 7

I mentioned the upcoming Gracie’s Mission event in a previous post, but Westgate Lanes will play host to another charity event on Apr. 7 with the “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” fundraiser to benefit the Old Colony YMCA’s Big Sister Big Brother mentoring program, from 10 AM to 2 PM that day. Teams of four to six are welcome, but participants are asked to raise $50 per person bowling. Teams may register by Mar. 31 by calling Allison Daley at 508-580-7786 or emailing adaley@oldcolonyymca.org. Fundraising pages may also be started by first visiting the page for the event.

Mar. 13 league night recap

My Week 28 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

The BowlSK comment says it all: It was a “feast or famine” type of night that was famine more often than not with seven splits and an overall poor spare game. I remarked to one of my opponents after bowling tonight that I’m starting to think I can bowl better on tough shots…two of my last three league nights were under the 479 I posted in the city tournament.

Result: 145-137-168=450
Average (84 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 155
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 550

As bad as I was, the team at least picked me up third game for the lone point of the night. Berta actually ended up having the high scratch series for my team.

Congratulations to all! 😀

“Pins For Pets” fundraiser set for Mar. 23

For the third straight year, Westgate Lanes will host the “Pins For Pets” cosmic bowling fundraiser for Gracie’s Mission on Mar. 23 from 8-10 PM. Gracie’s Mission aims to educate pet owners about holistic medical treatments, such as hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and Reiki, and provides financial assistance to pet owners who can’t otherwise afford treatment for them. Cost for the event is $25/person.

Winter 2013 Week 8 virtual league results

“The Four Stooges” won all seven points from “Jocks Rolling Rocks”, however, the two teams tied for second going into last week, “The Fifth Element” and “License To Strike”, opposed each other and “The Fifth Element” won all seven, so our lead remains eight points over that team. This does assure us of being in first place going into next week’s position round.

We had the high team game of the week, and “dgordon0408” and “mmalsed” were leaders individually. “MiggityMatt” will sub for “dgordon0408” this week.

Mar. 6 league night recap

My Week 27 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My optimum line was tight and outside of 10 tonight, and it seemed I forgot how to play out there (though I did get a taste of that in the tournament), but I did improve every game. I was mostly happy with my spare game, though I’d like the missed 3 pin back.

Result: 155-168-181=504
Average (81 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 164
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 565

Team lost all four, with the other team making a late run in each game. Carl and Berta both had decent nights, with Brian adding a 152 second game.

Mar. 4 league standings update

After winning one point from “The Incredibowls”, “Spare Parts” stand in 11th place, 11 points behind the aforementioned team. “The Incredibowls” lead by two points over “Sweet Rolls” and “Split Happens”. Wednesday night’s opponents will be “The 5 G’s”.

Sean Richard throws 300 game in Brockton city tournament singles

The 2012-13 bowling season at Westgate Lanes has been the year of Sean Richard, and he added to his highlights of the season today with his 41st career perfect game in the last game of his singles event in the association tournament. I knew it was only going to be a matter of time before I got video of one of his perfectos, and it’s below:

Sean told me it was his first honor score in the city tournament, so it’s safe to say he’ll remember this for a while. 😉

Congrats again, “Kash”! 😀

2013 BBA Championships Saturday

Rob Dickens had to back out of bowling doubles and singles with me because of wrist soreness when he tried bowling a week or so ago, so I ended up only bowling the team event, and this is how I did:

My appearance in team event, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

As I said in the BowlSK comment, I don’t think I disgraced myself on a tough lane condition. My spare game was essentially saving me first game, and I thought I had something going in the third game, but faltered. The comical moment came in the 3rd frame of Game 2, when I wound up picking the Greek Church split out of the full rack; I did make the spare after that. The team scored 2,500+ with handicap, but I didn’t think that would be good enough to cash.

I mentioned the tough lane condition, and nobody was really killing the shot, with Alex Aguiar having the closest approach to an honor score with a 289 game in singles; he finished with a 767 scratch series in the event.

2013 Tri-City mixed doubles results

The official results of last weekend’s mixed doubles tournament, conducted by the Tri-City Women’s Bowling Association:

Handicap

  1. Melissa Peterson & Eric Derochers 1,480
  2. Eric Buckman & Mary Altemese 1,431
  3. Paul Kenney & Debra Freed 1,413

Scratch

  1. Sandi Litchfield & Sean Richard 1,283
  2. Danielle Barros & Barry Muise 1,267

Congrats to all of the cashers. 😀

2013 USBC Open Championships oil patterns

The USBC decided months ago that two patterns, one for the team event and one for doubles and singles, would be used in this year’s national tournament, and, as the usual service to my readers, they are linked below (they will open in a new window/tab):

Pattern for team event

Specs: 41′ in length, 26.05 mL total oil, 2.57:1 ratio

Pattern for doubles & singles

Specs: 39′ in length, 24.4 mL total oil, 2.37:1 ratio

I’ll be running down hard copies to Westgate Lanes tonight for the pro shop and Junior. Junior will be choosing one of these patterns for the last third of the Coke league season.

Feb. 27 league night recap

My Week 26 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I had a good first game, but things went downhill from there, with “speed kills” being the theme of the night: When I was too fast, the ball never turned the corner. I also don’t want to use it as an excuse, but my mood was quite down due to finding out of the passing of an old Internet friend yesterday.

Result: 182-138-124=444
Average (78 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 166
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 547

The team generally followed my lead, meaning only one point on the night, though Berta and Pat had over-average nights.
