Oct. 2012 NAT doubles results

The Northeast Amateur Tournament reported that George Jones and Mike Major (the latter a Westgate Lanes league bowler) were the champions of the doubles tournament held on Oct. 7 at Westgate Lanes. The pair defeated Jonathan Thomas and Jayme Silva by a score of 920-891 (with handicap) in the two-game championship match. Other Westgate Lanes league bowlers cashing in the event were Paul Loberman & Eric Durden, Brian Gaskill (with Louis Petrillo), Hakim Emmanuel & Devon McGregor, Alex Aguiar (with Jon Van Hees), and Tony Bennett (with Paul Smith).

Oct. 14 league standings update

After winning only one point from “The Girly Man,” “Spare Parts” sits in a four-way tie for 11th place, with “The Doables,” “The Incredibowls,” and “Heavy Metal” also involved. The logjam is seven points behind the new leaders, “Dee’s Boys III,” who lead “The Mustangs” (our opponents this week) and “There’s 3 and 2” by one point.

Oct. 10 league night recap

My Week 6 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

A bit better tonight, but I still find myself rather unable to put two strikes together, and my left side has suddenly become my “mystery” side on spares.

Result: 182-172-150=504
Average (18 games): 163
Average for last 9 games: 161
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 496

Team only won the first game, but the second game was there if I could put the second strike in the 10th up.

Oct. 9 league standings update

Splitting the points with “Deadwood” meant that “Spare Parts” remained in a tie with that team, but “Bowling Stones” joined the tie at 7th place, with the tie being seven points behind “The Mustangs,” with that team leading “There’s 3 and 2” by two points. “Spare Parts” will bowl “The Girly Man” tomorrow night.

Jimmy Fund fundraiser note

There has been a group called the “Bad-Ass Bowling Circuit” who have started a monthly bowling fundraiser at Westgate Lanes for the Jimmy Fund, and I have learned that their next event at Westgate Lanes will be held on Oct. 18, with registration at 6:30 PM and bowling beginning at 7 PM. $25/person includes two games of tenpin bowling, along with shoes, food, games, and prizes.

I will try to pass along information on these, as there’s not a set day of the month for the event, except that it’s always on a Thursday night. You may also contact Kelly Rich via email at pea2375@msn.com for more information or to be added to the mailing list (invitations to these will be sent via eVite).

Fall 2012 Week 4 virtual league results

My bad league night last week proved costly for my virtual team, “Fantastic Four,” as well, as we lost all seven to Team 10. As a result, we’re now in a tie for 9th with “Cold Turkey” and “Pocket Rockets,” seven points behind a tie for the lead between Teams 7 and 2, with Team 10 just a point behind the leaders.

Oct. 3 league night recap

My Week 5 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My worst league night in a long time. I just couldn’t find a ball and/or area of the lane to play effectively, and I was bound to leave some difficult spares; missing four single pins didn’t help matters. Ray gave me some advice afterward to try to keep my ball speed up.

Result: 143-140-145=428
Average (15 games): 162
Average for last 9 games: 158
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 490

My team was a little better, if anything, but the same thing happened this time as when we last faced the opposing team…won first two games, but lost the third by enough for total.

Sept. 30 league standings update

“Spare Parts” ended up taking only one point from “The Doables” (after the handicap adjustment), and now sit in a five-way logjam for 8th place with “Angry Birds,” “Deadwood,” “Sweet Rolls,” and “The Incredibowls,” with my team listed in 10th place due to pinfall. The tie is 6 points behind a tie between “The Mustangs” and “There’s 3 and 2,” with “Dee’s Boys III” two points behind. “Deadwood” will be my team’s opposition this week.

Sept. 26 league night recap

My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I pretty much told Ray after bowling tonight that I’d be golden if I could ever get off to consistently better starts (3 splits in the first game). There are two things I’ll take from tonight: 1) My ball choice was vindicated by my games after the first one, and 2) I only missed one single pin tonight (that on a pin I don’t usually leave); I’ve been much better on single pin spares so far, and I’ll consider the season a success in that regard if I finish in the 80% range.

Result: 148-200-174=522
Average (12 games): 168
Average for last 9 games: 167
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 519

We know we won the first game for sure, but the third game may depend on the adjusted handicap after the first game (when Berta and Brian completed their nine games), as we lost by only one pin with the handicap on the recap.

Note: The BowlingTracker.com stat sheet apparently has an error with the AVG+1, so the AVG+1 given here is taken from my Excel log; I reported the bug on the BowlingTracker.com forums.

Parker Bohn III visits Westgate Lanes

This came about pretty much 11th hour, and, indeed, I didn’t know it was happening until Rich Fulton posted about it on Facebook, but PBA and USBC Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III came to Westgate Lanes tonight for a Brunswick demo day, meaning he had Brunswick’s current offerings that you could try out. I chatted him up about the C-System Maxxed-Out, which I had seen Sean Rash post about throwing in his recent tournaments in Asia, and he did have that ball available to try out. I’ll post the two photos I got below:

Parker was a really nice guy to meet, and as I was watching the bowlers throw the balls, I could see Parker giving tips to some of them. He will likely be here again, but I did ask him for more advance notice about the next one.

I’ve been meaning also to see if DV8, a new subsidiary company of Brunswick, had a homepage, but I did find it tonight and added it to my ball company sidebar list.

Sept. 25 league standings update

After failing to win a point from “Angry Birds,” “Spare Parts” fell into an 8th place (out of 16 teams) tie with “The 5 G’s,” four points behind the leaders, “There’s 3 and 2,” who lead “The Mustangs” by a point and “Dee’s Boys III” and “Split Happens” by two points. My team’s opponents for tomorrow night will be “The Doables.”

Oct. 2012 TNBA tournament note

The Boston Bowling Senate of the TNBA will run a handicapped (100% of 220) singles tournament on Oct. 13 & 14 at Westgate Lanes, with squad times of 12 PM, 1:30 PM, and 3 PM both days. Entry fee is $25, and all bowlers must be certified by both the USBC and the TNBA (TNBA cards may be purchased at the tournament site). Entry forms are available at the desk.

Sept. 19 league night recap

My Week 3 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

The 7th frame of the first game was foretelling of the kind of night I would have, as it was a rare tenpin leave of candlepin’s “Hi-Lo-Jack” (the 1-7-10 leave). Strikes were few and far between, and, while I would make most everything on my right side (including four of five 10 pins and a conversion of the 6-7-10), I had too many errant shots otherwise.

Result: 174-144-154=472
Average (9 games): 166
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 510

It seemed the whole team was in the same malaise I was, as our opponents took all three games comfortably.

Sept. 19 league standings update

“Spare Parts” now find ourselves in a five-way tie at the top with “Bowling Stones,” “The Mustangs,” “There’s 3 and 2,” and “The Incredibowls,” with my team being listed in 4th by pinfall (and the other teams listed in pinfall order). A team was added last week to the original 14, so there will now also be a vacant team. Because of the schedule shuffling, my team is now scheduled to bowl against “Angry Birds” tonight.

As the administrivia, I now have the LeagueSecretary.com standings, so that link will be added, and the summer league links taken down (with the summer league stat sheet on BowlingTracker.com also being archived there).
