I finally got around to updating this blog’s “About” page, primarily to note recent developments, including my 290 open bowling game and my recent election to the Brockton Bowling Association Board of Directors. I also noted some of my other bowling-related activities online in the update.

Alex Aguiar scores big in Las Vegas Mini-Eliminator
BowlingDigital.com reported that the Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen’s own Alex Aguiar was the winner of the Summer Mini-Eliminator at the Sunset Station Strike Zone in Las Vegas, rolling a 258 game in the final match. Aguiar pocketed a check for $20,000 as the event champion. Congrats Alex! 😀
July 16 league standings update
The Wednesday Summer Mixed League ladder got tighter this week, as Team 3 lost six points, enabling “3 Old Farts Plus 1” to move into the lead by two points over the former team. “Ebony And Ivory” was the only team near the top to win all eight points this week, so we now stand four points out of the lead in 4th place. One of the teams two points behind us, “Rockland Golf Course,” virtually circled on my schedule because my former teammates Brian and Ralph are on that team, will be our opponents next week.
July 16 outing with brother
With my brother and I due to go to a family birthday party later in the day, we found time to bowl this morning. This one was fairly far from being the horror show for me that the last outing was, though I did give my brother an opening in the first game by missing easy spares; he was only around 100, however, after I posted a 139. The other two games were more the norm for me, capped off by barely getting the deuce to end the session. I used my Fast the whole way, and it had returned to having a normal reaction after the cleaning last week.
AWBA national tournament results
The following are the results from the American Wheelchair Bowling Association national tournament that was held from June 20 to June 25 at Westgate Lanes. For the sake of brevity, I’ll only list the champions; where total score decided an event, the score is given, and where match play was involved, the result of the title match is given.
Up and Down No-Tap (1 wheelchair, 2 standing): Henry Walters (Georgia), Ed Miller (Brockton), Tyrone Thornton (Brockton?) 2401
Nelson Welker Scratch Doubles (pins over average): Keith Douglas & George Holscher (Virginia) +21
Gene Ramus National Handicap Team: Wayne Webber (Florida), Dave Roberts (Florida), Al Uttecht (California) 1972
Scratch Singles: Walt Roy (California) def. Al Uttecht (California) 207-199
Division A Handicap Singles: Mike Destasio (Delaware) def. David Spotts (Colorado) 242-241
Division B Handicap Singles: Michael Cannizzaro (Florida) def. Joel Hodel (Wisconsin) 221-187
Tournament of Champions, Handicap: Tom Walthall (Virginia)
Tournament of Champions, Scratch: George Holscher (Virginia) & Walt Roy (California) tied
In addition, Richard Spizzirri of Westwood, MA had the high scratch game in the B Division singles competition. Congratulations to all of the champions. Also, thank you to Maureen Morrison for getting me the week’s results. 😀
July 13 league night recap
My Week 7 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
All things considered, I had a decent night. Three of my five splits came in the second game, and I could have salvaged something by going to my Tropical Breeze late in the game, but I was hoping to get as much as I could from my Fast, which was being used for the first time since a cleaning last week.
Result: 198-148-195=541
Average (21 games): 185
Average for last 9 games: 181
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 561
We might have lost the second game points with my bad game, but Rob picked me up in a big way in that game, with 9 in a row after a first-frame spare for a 278, and the game turned out to be our most comfortably-won of the night; we took all eight points.
Dan Esdale posts 809 set in Wednesday Summer Mixed
One other item from the week’s standings update, but this one deserves its own post: Dan Esdale had a 279 high game in an 809 series this past week…congrats Dan! 😀
July 10 league standings update
“Ebony And Ivory” took 6 points last week, but were unable to close ground on Team 3 in first place, and stand in a tie in points for 5th with “Rockland Golf Course” (with my former teammates, Brian and Ralph) eight points off of the pace. Team 3’s lead is two points to “3 Old Farts Plus 1” and 3 to “Shake & Bake” at the midway point of the season. Team 2 will be my team’s opponents this week.
July 6 league night recap
My Week 6 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
Overall, I had a pretty good bounce-back night. The corner pin misses were troublesome, but I was making my 10 pin at the end when I paid more attention to my spare ball release, anyway.
Result: 201-160-225=586
Average (18 games): 186
Average for last 9 games: 180
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 565
The team bounced back, in big part thanks to Lou’s 714, which he finished out with a nice 269 game. Team would’ve swept if either Eileen or myself bowled average in the second game, but we still took 6 of the 8 points.
Cross-training #185
The Modesto Bee noted that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith threw a few shots to open up the pro-am for a PBA West regional event at Yosemite Lanes this past weekend. Smith is expected to re-sign with the 49ers once the NFL lockout ends.
July 3 outing with best friend
Today provided another opportunity to bowl, as my best friend Ed’s sister-in-law had a Groupon for Westgate Lanes that she wanted to use today. Ed’s wife rounded out the foursome, but, as the Groupon was only for one hour, we couldn’t get much bowling in. We completed one game each before it was over, with me scoring a 174 in that completed game, but I was making better shots in the partial second game, even walking out a couple of them to show the women in the party how many boards I’m now crossing since the last time they saw me bowl. It had a laid-back feel to it, so I was just out to enjoy myself and my company rather than actually trying to practice.
July 3 league standings update
The failure by “Ebony And Ivory” to win points against Team 3 meant that my team fell into a tie in points for 6th with “Lizzard Slayers” and “Wyld Stallyns,” eight points behind the aforementioned Team 3 and “3 Old Farts Plus 1,” with “Shake & Bake” five points off of the pace. “The Legend Killers” will be my team’s opposition on Wednesday night.
Fourth anniversary post
I just realized today that June 30 had come and passed, and it passed without me making my usual anniversary post. It has been that kind of year for me, because the last one was certainly a landmark one in my bowling time. The big moment came on September 22 of the last calendar year, in the third week of the past season’s Brunswick Mixed League, in which I had the front 10 in a 288 second game on the way to my first 700 series (anyone who wants to revisit that moment can click here for the BowlSK sheet from that night). The night was special for me, because it meant that I had finally eclipsed all of my pre-injury personal bests. Before the calendar turned to 2011, I also had an open bowling session to remember by having a run of 18 of 19 strikes consisting of the last 4 in the first game, a weak 10 to start the second game, followed by 14 in a row, closing out the second game with a 290 thanks to the last 11. As I noted in the post about it, it’s no longer a question of if I’m capable of putting up an honor score, but of putting the strikes together at the right time. I also had my personal best tournament game during the year (a 227 in the December People’s Tournament), as well as my first 200 game on a true sport condition (though I wish that was in the tournament instead of in practice for it). More recently, I’ve become more involved with my local association by setting up and keeping a Facebook page updated, an effort that was partially responsible for my election to the Brockton Bowling Association Board of Directors last weekend.
About the only person I want to thank in this post other than the “usual suspects” is Tony Attardo. As I noted in my post about the 700 series, if it wasn’t for him spotting a timing problem during my practice session on the Monday morning before the 700 night, I might not have had it at all. I don’t know what his past bowling resume looks like, but he’s certainly helped enough bowlers at Westgate Lanes to hope he gets association Hall of Fame consideration in the future. I should also thank my association manager, Bob Young, and the Brockton Bowling Association officers and directors for the trust they have placed in me for the coming year.
“Charlie Brown” finally wins one: With my brother in the area for the holiday weekend, we found time to bowl this morning. As a nod to a recent passing, and noting that my brother has used “Capt. Lou” on the scorer before, I put him in as “Macho Man” (a reference to wrestler Randy Savage). The session began innocently enough, with me shooting in the 180s and 190s for the first two games, but my game fell completely apart after that. After a spare to start the third game, I whiffed on a “picket fence” (the 1-2-4-7), missed a couple of single pins, then had three splits in a row, two of them 2-8-10 type splits, during which my Fast seemed to lose all reaction. I knew my brother was probably going to break through when he followed spares in the 2nd and 3rd frames with a double, which put me in a big hole. By the end of the game, I changed to my Tropical Breeze, and that was making it back to the pocket where my Fast wasn’t, even though the former ball is supposed to be weaker than the latter one. The end result was a 103, easily my worst game since the period when I was getting my bowling legs back under me four years ago. My brother got a photo of the overhead monitor after the game to put on Facebook as a “trophy.” Congrats to my brother today…I’d say it was bound to happen sometime, because “that’s bowling.” 😀

SanDiego.com noted that the next event for Padres second baseman Orlando Hudson’s C.A.T.C.H. (Curing Autism Through Change and Hope) Foundation will be the Strike Out! Autism Bowling Fundraiser on July 28 at East Village Tavern and Bowl.
June 2011 People’s Tournament results
(Note: The following is a recap of an event in which the author of this blog was a participant.)
The People’s Tournament reported Eugenio Mauro (North Bowl, 150 avg.) was the winner of the event held on June 12 at Westgate Lanes. Mauro defeated Bill Kempton (Westgate Lanes, 180 avg.) by a score of 234-215 (with handicaps) in the title match. Also, for Westgate Lanes, Michael Reed (175 avg.) was a semifinalist, and April Raines (169 avg.) was also in the round of eight.
June 29 league night recap
My Week 5 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
There was one bright side to this night: I was smart enough to make an axis rotation adjustment after some lightish hits to get more in the pocket without having to move. It was just an off night in general, however, with my deuce saving 500.
Result: 137-172-200=509
Average (15 games): 184
Average for last 9 games: 176
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 572
Lou wasn’t with us tonight, and Eileen was the only one who put together two decent games for us. We left some points with our opponents, as we failed to pick up any with two fairly close games (the first two).
June 28 practice
In dire need of a practice session after over a week of not bowling and not having had an actual practice session in some time, I hit the practice lane today with two things in mind: tightening up my line, as suggested by “CoachJim,” and to work on lining up on my right side spares using a tip I saw from Pete Weber on the summer PBA telecasts over the weekend. As for the latter, I missed a couple of spares on that side early, but made all of them afterward as I got used to trying to point my toes toward the pins (I didn’t realize I often pointed my left foot away from the pins) and walking toward them as I deliver the ball. I also resigned myself to the thought of having to hook at some of my spares in the middle, particularly those involving the 2 pin, and made the two “makeable” leaves I had involving the 2: a double wood and a single 2 later. With the former, I didn’t always execute, but I started the last game with four strikes and found myself having to make spares until the 10th, when a “Big 4” ruined a clean game; I ended up with a 206.

The Fox affiliate in Orlando noted that some lucky kids bowled with Magic center Dwight Howard as he kicked off his D12 Foundation at the No Pin Left Behind Bowling Tournament at AMF Altamonte Lanes this past Saturday.
A new role
I’ve been wrangling since I got home yesterday with whether I wanted to mention what’s to follow or spare the post out of a wish to avoid self-promotion in the matter, but I decided that I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least make a brief note about it.
I attended the Brockton Bowling Association’s annual open meeting yesterday with the intention of giving a report on the Facebook page. After the reports were taken care of, Bob Young mentioned that with our 50th association tournament coming up next year, and with the Brockton Bowling Association hosting the state open tournament again in the not too distant future, he would need more people to help with tournaments and such, and since I’ve already displayed the willingness to assist the association, suggested I be placed on the board of directors. There was some discussion about how to fit me onto the current board, since I did not want to take the vacant Taunton spot on the board because I don’t bowl there. Eventually, the board was reorganized (I’ll spare the details) and I was elected to a one-year term on the board.
I was able to contribute immediately, as there was discussion on how we could recognize non-members who have assisted the association and bowling in the area in general. I moved (which was seconded and voted on in the affirmative) to exempt Meritorious Service nominees for the association Hall of Fame from the bowling requirements. Some of the people we can now recognize are area bowling writers (who may not necessarily be bowlers themselves) and people who are not Brockton Bowling Association members who have done stuff like assist with the youth bowling programs in the area. I hope this change proves a positive step for the association.
I am looking forward to fulfilling my increased responsibility, perhaps beginning with the Bowler of the Year tournament in September.
Women and Youth post categories added
I completed my other summer blog project today by adding post categories, as follows:
Women: Posts about honor scores bowled by female bowlers, and about women’s leagues and tournaments
Youth: Posts about honor scores bowled by youth bowlers, and about youth leagues and tournaments
I also went into the archives and added the categories to posts where appropriate. I hope this accomplishes something similar to what I did for the sidebar links list. Note: I may not necessarily add the women’s category to posts about mixed leagues and tournaments, but I absolutely will set the youth category for posts about youth bowlers bowling with adult bowlers.
June 24 league standings update
As my league had this week off for the national wheelchair tournament, the following will reflect the standings after the bowling on June 15.
“Ebony And Ivory”, despite a split of the points with “Wild Samoans” (Team 7 finally deciding on one of their old names), made it back to a three-way tie in points with Team 3 (our opponents next week) and “3 Old Farts Plus 1,” with my team having the best handicap pinfall of the three. The lead by the teams at the top is two points over “Wyld Stallyns.” With the schedule having been reduced by a week, we are now already one-third of the way through the schedule.
Cross-training #182
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel noted that Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder was the host of the team’s bowl-a-thon last night at the Pinstrikes Bowling Center at IPic Entertainment at the Bayshore Town Center in Glendale, WI. Proceeds from the event went toward building a library for the Young Leaders Academy at the Northside YMCA.
Up and Down no-tap tournament
I treated the night like a regular league night, so I arrived about the time I usually would for winter league. Before bowling, I caught up with someone from my bowling past: Wayne Webber, who is now AWBA president. Wayne was working in the pro shop at the time I first broke into league bowling and had drilled my first bowling balls, so it really was a pleasure for me to see him again.
For the tournament, I was teamed with the Spotts, Dan and Lorretta, from Colorado Springs. Dan was the wheelchair bowler on the team, and it turned out he was a former national champion, having won the A division handicap championship in 2004, the cloth for which was proudly displayed on the back of his wheelchair. The team didn’t do so well, and I had started out slowly, changing to my Tropical Breeze for the second game, which I had to run into the pro shop between frames to address a fit issue. I found a good line near the end looking around 15; part of my problem is usually trying to swing the ball too much and getting the ball to the dry on the outside too soon. Dan was consistently in the 170s and 180s, and Lorretta, after a poor start, was in the 200s in her other two games; I contributed a 588 no-tap scratch score for a 2060 score with handicap, which I didn’t think would cash, so I left early.
While I was bowling, I was observing the wheelchair bowlers around me, and noticed that many of them could hook it at least a little, which has given me new appreciation for disabled athletes. If I get results for the no-tap event, I will post them. Also, although the AWBA has a website, it hasn’t been updated for a while, so I may have to rely on on-site results for the national tournament, which started today.
Good luck to all of the wheelchair bowlers this week. 😀

Had to get this in…
A Native American-focused website noted that the Boston Bruins had part of the celebration of the franchise’s first Stanley Cup championship in nearly 40 years at the High Rollers Luxury Lanes & Lounge at Foxwoods Resort & Casino (owned in part by the Mashantucket Pequot tribe). Part of the celebration was the consumption of a $100K bottle of Ace of Spades “Midas” champagne, the empty bottle of which the players autographed and is now on display inside the bowling lounge.

The Maryland Gazette noted that Usama Young of the New Orleans Saints, a graduate of Largo High School outside of Washington, DC, would hold a bowling event at an area center last night to benefit his youth foundation. The event was part of a community service weekend, something many NFL players do in their hometowns in the offseason.
Feeling the “Breeze” (includes June 15 league recap)
Posting this late again…
Before league tonight, I had Ray punch up a new Tropical Breeze. I got the black/teal color combination, which is a polished solid cover. Solid coverstocks tend to be good control balls, which is what I felt I needed when the house shot burns up from play. I kept the cover polished (keeping the ball’s length) and the layout turned out to be 5 5/8″ X 4″, which puts the pin above bridge with the CG (Center of Gravity) position kicked out (more to the side of the ball), which gives me length with a tamer backend than the Fast. I bowled most of a game with it before putting the ball away for the start of my league session.
My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
My two games with the Fast weren’t great, but the third game was an opportunity to use the Breeze, and, when I didn’t get strikes in that game, I got single pins, for the most part, with only a split filling the 10th frame ruining things. I like the new ball so far on the burnt shot, so I hope I get better at throwing it under that condition.
Result: 151-178-204=533
Average (12 games): 188
Average for last 9 games: 186
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 568
Team lost the first game largely due to the opposing anchor bowling a personal best game; we won the other two games, but couldn’t make up the first-game deficit, so the result was a 4-4 draw. Eileen, not wanting to miss the Bruins’ Game 7 win last night, pre-bowled, and I can say if she didn’t do well in her last two games, we might not have had any points on the night.
Note: My summer league will not be meeting next week because of the national wheelchair tournament. I will, however, be participating in the “Up and Down” no-tap event on Monday, and will post about that when the time comes.

MLB.com reported that the Chicago White Sox held their annual celebrity bowling tournament at the Chicago Lucky Strike Lanes just hours after wrapping up a ten-game homestand. The event, as usual, benefited the pediatric oncology departments at two area hospitals.
Brunswick Mixed champions, 2011
I may not have been able to get a photo of my league’s champions at the banquet, but Alex Frisbie let me have this still from his video, so I now present to you my 2010-11 league champions, “The Incredibowls”:

June 12 league standings update
With last week’s net win, “Ebony And Ivory” are just two points out of first place in sole possession of second after three weeks, with Team 3 being the team in the lead. Team 7 provides the opposition this week.
My day at June 2011 People’s Tournament
My qualification attempt, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)
I could definitely say I bowled better today on the “Dead Man” than I have been. My spare game was actually what was holding me in good stead, but it deserted me in the last game, particularly in the middle of it, when I missed three very makeable spares in a row. I figure I make the cut (639) if I stay clean and add the fill strike in the 10th, but I’ll definitely take this effort, particularly the first two games (of course).
