2013-14 Fall/Winter links transition

I’ve done a gradual transition of the “Author’s links” sidebar section between seasons in the past, but I made precedent today by taking down all of the summer league links and putting up all of the fall/winter league links at the same time. Part of the reason is that the standings pages don’t change location (there will be nothing new on those pages until my first standings update, at the earliest), but also that I’m putting up my actual spreadsheet log as a Google Docs spreadsheet, as I was thinking about doing. The log will be automatically updated as I sync the file on my Google Drive, and has two pages, the first with all of the games and most of the calculated averages, and the second with the pair averages and game and series score percentages. The more detailed spreadsheet log replaces the BowlingTracker.com sheets I’ve linked in the past.

Computer preparedness

Many of you have seen on Facebook recently that I acquired a new Windows 8 laptop, as well as a laser printer for use with it, and I said I’d divulge the reasons for the acquisitions here. That time has come. 🙂

I was at Westgate Lanes today getting my new gear set up for use there. I’ve said here that I’d be providing scoring services for the Junior Professionals Tournament in November, and the new equipment will be used for that, but there’s more. After brackets weren’t run in the Coke league the last night of their season, I made an offer to Eric Durden, the person who’s been running the brackets in that league, to fill in for him this season on nights that he can’t make it, and I bought my stuff to do just that.

I needed software to do brackets on as well as hardware, and the bracket manager I chose was Braxion. CDE had TBrac for this purpose, and the two applications were about the same price, but I was assured by the folks at Braxion that I could print out scoresheets after the brackets have been generated, so I chose that one. I’ll put up a link to their website in the sidebar, in the general “Bowling Links” category.

Alex Aguiar cashes in 2013 US Open

As reported by the PBA, Alex Aguiar, from Dartmouth, MA, finished 54th after today’s cashers qualifying round at the US Open in Columbus, OH. Elsewhere on the site, Alex was reported with a +23 score after 24 games of qualifying to make the cut in the 61st position, then was able to move up with a +6 block (6 games).

I posted on Facebook that, by coincidence, Alex finished one spot higher than Chris Barnes, and my post was a reference to the last time the PBA Tour was in Norwich, CT, for the Go RV’ing Match Play Championship in March of 2010, a week in which Aguiar knocked Barnes out in the first round of the tournament, then, later in the week, defeated Barnes again in the action match for Xtra Frame.

I’ve been following the action at the US Open all week on Xtra Frame, and the administrivia for this post will be that I’ll add a link to Xtra Frame to the sidebar, under the general “Bowling Sites” category.

Arsenal image updated

I just wanted to note here that I finally updated the animation of my arsenal in the sidebar to include the Marvel Pearl, which I had punched up some time ago. I did have to resort to an animated GIF creation site because I was having trouble getting the animation to save properly if I used GIMPShop 2.8.

May 15 league night recap (first night of Summer 2013)

Liz and Mike DiBenedetto are bowling this summer, so it was natural for me to ask Liz (but not Mike, who was sick tonight) to have them join my team. Our fourth is Dave Currier, who bowls winter league in the ENE Systems league on Wednesday night (one of the leagues by the desk) as well as the Sunday Niters league. Both Liz and Dave liked my idea of “X Factors” for our team name.

My Week 1 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My second game was a result of distracted bowling while resolving a matter of a missing pay envelope, and I had a better third game once we knew that I did, in fact, give the envelope to Donna.

Result: 169-135-189=493
Average (3 games): 164
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 497

Both Liz and Dave were over their entering averages every game (we took the 150 vacant tonight in the absence of Mike). We were hopeful of splitting 4-4, bowling against Eileen’s team. Eileen, for her part, had her first clean game in the second game.

As the administrivia of this post, I am giving BowlingTracker.com another go, as the spam activity seems to have ebbed, putting the new stat sheet in the “Author’s links” portion of the sidebar. This will start the summer links transition.

“Excel for bowlers tutorial” added to “Author’s links” sidebar

Bowling lends itself to statistics, as you’re even judged as a bowler by your average, and I know many bowlers track their scores on spreadsheets. I’ve been keeping spreadsheet logs since I returned to bowling, even tracking my early practice sessions with them, but they haven’t been in too great detail so far.

Enter 2013, and BowlingTracker.com, which I’ve been keeping stat sheets on since I started bowling in leagues again, has encountered a spam problem on their forums, which has, in turn, caused the score tracking part of the site to be slower than usual. Because of that, I’ve been forced to find a way to make my Excel logs do more, and have generated a prototype log that does everything BowlingTracker.com does, and more. Wanting to give back and help my fellow bowlers, I decided to post a tutorial thread of sorts on BowlingCommunity.com that shows you how to use Excel to do many things with your bowling scores. I have linked the thread on my blog in the “Author’s links” sidebar section, and it should be noted that I have shared my prototype log in the thread so users could see how I have things set up. FYI, if you don’t want to use any sort of standalone desktop spreadsheet application, many of the concepts I go into in the thread will also work in Google Docs spreadsheets.

You may certainly post in the thread if you have questions. 😀

Note: If you’re viewing this as a single post, just click the header to go to the front page, and the sidebar will load.

Photos added to “scrapbook”; page added

I’ve been meaning to add more photos to the “scrapbook”, and I noticed that Junior has been taking some with his new tablet for the Westgate Lanes Facebook page. I got his permission (on at least one of them; if he doesn’t want others on it, he can let me know and I’ll remove them) to repost them here. I have a photo of the Westgate 1 travel league team this year (who won the league), as well as photos of the winning teams of the first two thirds of the current Coke league season.

Also, to prevent slow-loading and possible browser crashes from pages having too many photos, I decided to cap the number of photos on each page at 20, and, having reached that number on the original page, created a second page off of the main “scrapbook” page (which has both of the Coke league teams on it).

Local association links added to sidebar

Many members of the Brockton Bowling Association are also members of other local associations, so I’ve decided to place the links to three of Brockton’s neighboring associations, Greater Boston, Southeastern Mass., and Rhode Island, in the sidebar list under the “Local/New England” category. Greater Boston will be of interest this year because they’re the host association for the state open tournament.

Factoid: Because Rhode Island is such a small state, their association is actually considered part of the Massachusetts state association.

Correction to Mass. state youth tournament note

I probably could have posted this with my blog host’s mobile app, but I wasn’t completely comfortable with it, so I decided to wait until my power and Internet connection were restored after Nemo.

Rosemarie Hamilton has informed me that they’ve changed the venue of the state youth tournament to Ken’s Bowl in Pittsfield. Since she didn’t tell me, I’ll have to assume that they’re the same dates. I’m also still trying to find out when the Westgate Lanes contingent will be bowling.

Link to “Richard Shockley Virtual Bowling Academy” added to sidebar

It’s been a while since I added something other than a post to this blog site. 🙂

I came across Richard Shockley’s site via a post on the BowlingCommunity forums about release position, which had his video tip embedded. His site has an archive of his “Tips of the Week,” but you can also, for about $50, submit video of your bowling from 3 angles (side, back, and release) and he’ll send you back a 30 minute customized lesson, much like “My Bowling Coach” does. The link to his site can now be found in the sidebar in the “Coaching/Tips” category.

Note: Shockley is a USBC-certified Gold level coach.

League recap backlog to be made up tomorrow

The standing issue of having my “old” BowlSK information transferred to my “new” Google Account (actually, the one I’ve always had that I changed the email address on) has been successfully resolved, and, as a result, I am announcing that the entire backlog of league recaps (including tonight’s) will be made up tomorrow. Each night will have a separate recap and will have the same presentation, including my averages and +1 scores after each night’s bowling.

Oct. 18 notes

I announced on Facebook that I’m waiting to post my league night recap until an issue related to the change of email address on the Google Account my BowlSK information is associated with is resolved. I hope to be able to post about last night within a few days, anyway.

There is other administrivia, as well: I noticed an error in the formula in my Excel log that calculates my average for the last 9 games; the range only specified the current three games, and was copied to all of my weeks after the fourth week, so I edited the formula, copied down, and recalculated, after which I have edited the last three league recaps for the proper floating average.

Sept. 26 league night recap

My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I pretty much told Ray after bowling tonight that I’d be golden if I could ever get off to consistently better starts (3 splits in the first game). There are two things I’ll take from tonight: 1) My ball choice was vindicated by my games after the first one, and 2) I only missed one single pin tonight (that on a pin I don’t usually leave); I’ve been much better on single pin spares so far, and I’ll consider the season a success in that regard if I finish in the 80% range.

Result: 148-200-174=522
Average (12 games): 168
Average for last 9 games: 167
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 519

We know we won the first game for sure, but the third game may depend on the adjusted handicap after the first game (when Berta and Brian completed their nine games), as we lost by only one pin with the handicap on the recap.

Note: The BowlingTracker.com stat sheet apparently has an error with the AVG+1, so the AVG+1 given here is taken from my Excel log; I reported the bug on the BowlingTracker.com forums.

Parker Bohn III visits Westgate Lanes

This came about pretty much 11th hour, and, indeed, I didn’t know it was happening until Rich Fulton posted about it on Facebook, but PBA and USBC Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III came to Westgate Lanes tonight for a Brunswick demo day, meaning he had Brunswick’s current offerings that you could try out. I chatted him up about the C-System Maxxed-Out, which I had seen Sean Rash post about throwing in his recent tournaments in Asia, and he did have that ball available to try out. I’ll post the two photos I got below:

Parker Bohn III at Westgate Lanes Brunswick demo day

Richie with Parker Bohn III at Westgate Lanes Brunswick demo day

Parker was a really nice guy to meet, and as I was watching the bowlers throw the balls, I could see Parker giving tips to some of them. He will likely be here again, but I did ask him for more advance notice about the next one.

I’ve been meaning also to see if DV8, a new subsidiary company of Brunswick, had a homepage, but I did find it tonight and added it to my ball company sidebar list.

Sept. 19 league standings update

“Spare Parts” now find ourselves in a five-way tie at the top with “Bowling Stones,” “The Mustangs,” “There’s 3 and 2,” and “The Incredibowls,” with my team being listed in 4th by pinfall (and the other teams listed in pinfall order). A team was added last week to the original 14, so there will now also be a vacant team. Because of the schedule shuffling, my team is now scheduled to bowl against “Angry Birds” tonight.

As the administrivia, I now have the LeagueSecretary.com standings, so that link will be added, and the summer league links taken down (with the summer league stat sheet on BowlingTracker.com also being archived there).

Sept. 12 league standings update

To my surprise, “Spare Parts” actually won all four points on the first night, with “Warren’s Girls” and “The 5 G’s” also doing so. My team is listed first in the standings by pinfall. “Deadwood” will be my team’s opponents tonight. Individually, Carl had the second high handicap game for the men last week.

As the administrivia, the standings on BowlerExpress have been added to the “Author’s links” list in the sidebar.

Sept. 4 practice

I felt I needed a practice session, if anything to make sure there were no surprises with the shot for tomorrow night. Without giving too much away, I had seven in a row in the second game, so what I was doing was working, for the most part. My spare game was off, but I did convert the 6-7 in the first game.

Brunswick Mixed no-tap note: Shawn emailed the results of last week’s no-tap tournament today, and I came in second, just two pins behind Juan Rosario, a newcomer to the league. Congrats Juan, and we’ll get acquainted soon.

Fall links transition: To save time both at the bowling alley and when I get home tomorrow, I set up the new league on BowlingTracker.com and BowlSK, and the links to the stat sheet and BowlSK league index are up in the sidebar, under “Author’s links,” as usual.

Link to BowlSpace profile removed

It is with some sadness that I must report that the BowlSpace website went offline sometime in the recent past, so the link to my profile on that site no longer works, forcing me to remove it. In the early days of this blog, I had BowlSpace “exclusives,” and those have now been lost. A couple of them only related to stuff that happened in my first league back, but I did tell the story of my LBT win there, so I’ll be forced to re-tell it here (but I do have added content in mind).

Link to “The Tournament Source” added to sidebar

I’m always looking for ways to promote my blog, and I found “The Tournament Source” has a good links list, but I have to give them a reciprocal link to get listed, and the way I had to do it is with an image linked to their site. Therefore, I had to add an image widget with one of their images (one that fits, as they have a couple of sizes available) with the image linked to their page. I’ll comment when I know I’m listed there.

The site is mostly a state-by-state tournament listing, so this site can be useful, too. I thought I saw you could list one event for free, so if you’re running a tournament in the future, you may want to check this site out.

Note: I can’t get the image widget to set a target for the image’s link, so it opens in the same window/tab; you may want to right-click the image to open it in a new window or tab.

Link to Lordfield site added to sidebar

Ray alerted me to a new ball company named Lordfield, which appears to be based out of Korea, but is on the list of ball companies registered with the PBA, so I’ve updated the “Ball Sites” listing to include the link to their website. While I was at it, I gave the list a cursory examination for dead links, and found I’ve had to update the one for Visionary, so the link to that company’s site works again.

Note: I am vague about whether the company’s name should be one word or two words, since the site uses both forms of it in various places.

Update on EFnet channel

My friend in Virginia, “CoachJim,” was having problems finding the channel with the webchat on EFnet’s website, so, playing around with stuff on the website (mostly the channel search), I got the URL format for a particular channel, and have figured out what the webchat URL for my bowling channel should be. I have added the link in the “Author’s links” sidebar section; just input your nickname and click the “Log In” button to join. 😀

My new project

I alluded to a new project in my 5th anniversary post, and I can finally reveal what it is. 😀

As some of you know, I hang on the BowlingFans.com chat, but the bulk of my experience on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) has been on the EFnet network, which is the oldest and largest IRC network. Since I got back into bowling, I’ve wanted a place to talk about the sport on that network, and, though #bowling exists, there are only idle bots and clients there, and, furthermore, nobody bit on my offer to take over the day-to-day operation of that channel (chat rooms are called channels on IRC). The saying being, “If you want something done right, do it yourself,” and given that I’ve needed to assume more of the administrative control of my other channels, I have started the channel #bowling! (the # and ! are part of the name), and placed a Wraith botpack there, along with my other channels, to keep the channel open. As befits a bowler, the bots all have pro bowler “names”.

To assist my readers in finding the channel, I have added a link to the “Author’s links” section of my sidebar, but, unlike the other links on my blog, the link uses the IRC protocol, and can be accessed with a compatible IRC client installed (I’ve been using the mIRC shareware application for Windows for years, but there are others for every operating system). For those who would like to check it out without installing software, a webchat is available through the network’s website; just plug in the #bowling! channel name and a nickname (no more than nine characters) into the form provided on the homepage.

Finally, just so that everyone knows, I’m not abandoning the BowlingFans.com chat, but actually hope to link the two channels in the future (it will require a scripted bot with a cross-network script). The topic on the EFnet channel also references the BowlingCommunity.com forums (in “TinyURL” form).

I hope to see some of you in the EFnet chat soon. 😀

“About” page edited

I decided to make a minor addition to my “About” page, one that notes my membership (in my mind) in “Storm Nation,” but I did add the caveat that my spare ball is not a Storm ball (Brunswick makes the T-Zones). If this ever changes, I’ll let everyone know, but I have liked every Storm ball I’ve had to this point.

GoBowling.com added to sidebar links

The site in the post title came to my attention in a comment to a recent post, which I approved, and it appears to be a good general bowling site, with a bowling center locator, tips, and a blog (though this site won’t be part of the blogroll), as well as a Twitter feed (I don’t use Twitter, but have thought about it as an adjunct to this blog because you can post via text message, but I’m not at the bowling center for leagues often enough to make a Twitter feed really useful.) and a Facebook page (which should be linked on the site). The site was added to the sidebar under the general “Bowling Sites” category.

Another change to the blog was an oversight in re-categorizing a post in the month of March of 2008 to add the “Youth” category last summer; I have done so with this post today.

May 29 league standings update

“Froot Loops” settled into 18th (out of a full 20 teams) after taking two points from “RPMM’s”, two points ahead of “The Oddballs” and four ahead of Team 20, our opposition tomorrow night. Team 19 has yet to lose points after two weeks, and they hold a two point lead on “The Avengers” and four ahead of “Red Sox”.

The administrivia for this post is that the link to the standings sheet on LeagueSecretary.com has been added and the winter league links deleted, completing the summer transition. I’ll be archiving the online log (on BowlingTracker.com) for the winter league recently completed momentarily.
