Mar. 14 tournament doubleheader

If you were a spectator at Westgate Lanes today, you got “two for the price of one”, as both the Bay State Open and the Eliminator were going on (with the Brockton youth honor squad also going on, which I’ll have results for later). In the Bay State Open, Louis Petrillo came away the winner after defeating Mark Zimmerman 250-205 (with handicap) in the final match. Matt Richard and Devon McGregor were the other Westgate bowlers in the head-to-head finals.

In the Eliminator, an exciting final match came down to the last ball, with Peter Arsenault a 256-251 (with handicap) winner over AJ Voisine. Tina Gannon was eliminated in 3rd place in the second eliminator round, and Matt Richard and Jim Ferguson were eliminated in the first eliminator round. Arsenault also had a 290 game during qualifying.

Congrats everyone! 😀

Aaron Major bowls 2nd 800 of season in Junior King of the Hill

A tournament I’ve kept quiet about until now is a King of the Hill tournament youth coach Keith Kaestner has been running for the junior bowlers here, and in yesterday’s installment, Aaron Major followed up 258 and 264 qualifying games with a 279 game in his first stepladder match for an 801 series, his second 800 series of the season. WTG Aaron! 😀

Sean Richard wins first NAT title at Westgate Lanes

Congratulations to Sean Richard, who won his first Northeast Amateur Tournament title today at Westgate Lanes after defeating Mark Juliano in the two-game final match by a score (with handicap) of 563-500. Seany was really locked in today, as he also had games of 242, 258, and 300 (his 52nd) for 800 on the button in his first three games (of four) of qualifying. Devon McGregor, Bill Briggs, Matt Richard, Hakim Emmanuel, David Chalifoux, Danny Khuu, and John Hayes Jr. were the other Westgate bowlers cashing.

Scoring was high all day, as Devon McGregor also had a 299 game en route to putting up 1,041 for the four games, and Ed Brabant Jr. and David Chalifoux also had perfect games; the last strike of the latter 300 game is below:

Congrats guys! 😀

2015 USBC Open Championships oil patterns

As the usual service to my readers, I’ll link below the oil patterns in use for the 2015 USBC Open Championships, which begin Saturday in El Paso, TX:

Team: 38′ length, 26.9 ml total oil volume, 1.64:1 ratio

Doubles & singles: 39′ length, 27.05 ml total oil volume, 1.86:1 ratio

As you may note, both patterns are under a 2:1 ratio, with the least shape being on the team pattern; the flatness of the team pattern should test the teams’ cooperation in breaking down the pattern. Scores should be low in both team and in the minors, though scores will be higher in singles than doubles, particularly where the bowlers are staying on the same pair for singles.

As noted earlier, the Coke league will be using neither pattern this year, but some of our bowlers may make the trip to El Paso, so this post is directed more for them.

2015 Tri-City mixed doubles results

The official results of the Brockton/Foxvale/Tri-City mixed doubles tournament last weekend:

Congrats to all! 😀

2015 Tri-City mixed doubles Day 2 notes

Before I mention today’s high game, I must note that I missed Mark Hartley’s 269 game, which ended up being the high game of the tournament. As the highlight of today’s action, Henry Webber had the front nine before whiffing a 10 for a 267 game. It is the tournament director’s policy to not allow results (even when stated as unofficial) to be made public until they are official, so I will have those at a later date.

EDIT: I also meant to mention in a note that Devon McGregor has had to cancel Saturday’s scratch Eliminator due to a death in his family. There are currently no plans to reschedule the tournament.

  5. John Hayes Jr. 798

There were 32 entries. Sean Richard actually had a chance at a no-tap 900 series, but left the 3-5 in the 35th frame.

Congrats to all! 😀

Senior E. Mass. Bowlers Association to launch in Feb.

Ed Roberts has recently laid the groundwork for a senior bowling tournament organization in the region, the Senior Eastern Mass. Bowlers Association (SEMBA), which I will be involved with. Our plans include an inaugural tournament on Feb. 22 at Town Line in Malden, followed by a tournament at Westgate Lanes a month later (Mar. 22). Those wanting more information can find Ed at Westgate Lanes on Monday nights, but I will be updating the blog’s calendar with the March tournament.

RI Ladies Classic to make Westgate Lanes debut Jan. 24

I keep saying that anything that improves opportunities in bowling for women is good for bowling in general, and I’ve recently learned that the RI Ladies Classic, after seeing a number of Massachusetts women entering their tournaments, has chosen to host their next tournament, on Jan. 24, at Westgate Lanes for the first time. They have made a flyer available on their Facebook page, which will be added to the “Local/New England” sidebar list. Note: The entry fee, $40, is waived (free) for first-time RI Ladies Classic participants.

Westgate Lanes debut of UBA set for Jan. 4

I’ve been quiet about it until now, but some of you may have seen references in the sidebar and calendar to the Underground Bowling Association (UBA) in recent weeks. What is the UBA? It’s sort of a travel league, but a lot of urban culture influences the organization. Among other things, bowlers in the UBA are known by their nicknames, much like rappers are known by their stage names (more on this later).

Westgate Warriors logo

What this has been building up to is that the UBA is about to make its formal Westgate Lanes debut Sunday, and the center’s own UBA team, the Westgate Warriors (their logo is above), will face Pound for Pound in their first home match ever in the UBA. Paris “P-Nyce” Cook is the team’s president, and some of the better Westgate bowlers, including Seany Ka$h (with this nickname being a natural for Sean Richard to use in the UBA), are on the team. Matches consist of one scratch and two handicap match-ups of three bowlers each, with a points system determining the match winner as well as counting in the conference standings (the Westgate Warriors are in the NY/NE Conference). Note: I said formal debut because bowlers in the UBA also participate in head-to-head individual ranking matches, and some of those have already been at Westgate Lanes.

There is much administrivia for this post, including an item that has already been in the sidebar for a couple of months: The UBA’s homepage (under the “Bowling Sites” category). The Westgate Warriors also have their own page, which has been added to the “Local/New England” list. I have also started a “Westgate Warriors” post category for posts related to the team (this post being the first one in the category).

Also, I was hoping to have a special project for the Warriors off the ground by now, which was why I’ve been delaying this post, and I will be an honorary member of the team. Some of the project requirements haven’t been completed, however, and we hope to complete these after Sunday’s match.

Finally, with teams coming in from all over the Northeast, UBA events are actually weekend-long affairs, with side events taking place the Saturday before matches. The Bay State Open and the Eliminator have committed to Saturday afternoon, and in the evening, there will be the inaugural four-game Warrior Sweeper.

Dec. 28 Eliminator results

In today’s edition of The Eliminator, Zach Thompson finished first with a 271 score with handicap (and getting a messenger 10 on the fill ball for the margin of victory), John Hayes Jr. 2nd with a 270, and Dennis Scollins Jr. 3rd with a 259. Bill Polette was eliminated in 4th in the first round.

Dec. 2014 Junior Bowling Sport Challenge results

First, congrats to Kevin Thibeault, as he won the U20 division again, and Sharon Evans, the tournament director, was kind enough to give me stepladder results for both the U20 and U15 divisions, so those will be below:

Match 2: Stephen Major def. Perry 210-162
