Westgate Lanes to host Junior Professionals Tournament Nov. 3

Westgate Lanes will be hosting the first Junior Professionals Tournament, conceptualized by Westgate Lanes youth bowler Stephen Major and for which yours truly helped refine the format, on November 3 at 10 AM. The tournament is for bowlers of USBC youth-eligible age at least 11, and the format is similar to a PBA tournament, with qualifying and match play rounds leading up a stepladder final round. There will be two divisions, handicap and scratch, handicapped at 80% of 200 with bowlers 200 average and over bowling in the scratch division. If you have a child who may be interested in participating, you may click here for the entry document with the particulars. Entries will close on Oct. 20.

I’ve been looking to become more involved with the youth bowlers, and this tournament provides a unique opportunity for me to do so, with me liking the format due to the natural tendency of youth to want to emulate their heroes. I will be providing scoring services as well as other computer-related support (I drew up the entry document above in Microsoft Word), and I hope to see everyone there. This is not a sanctioned tournament, so you’d think I wouldn’t get involved as a member of the Brockton Bowling Association board, but I’m throwing my support behind this in the hope that future tournaments of this type will be sanctioned.

Ed Roberts, Team USA take team silver at senior worlds

The USBC reported that Ed Roberts and Team USA won the silver medal in men’s team of four at the WTBA World Senior Championships yesterday in Las Vegas. The Americans qualified second and defeated Puerto Rico in the semifinal match 860-844 before losing the gold medal to Sweden 903-816. Sweden defeated Mexico 765-696 in the other semifinal match.

Ed Roberts also qualified for the Masters by placing 15th in men’s all-events, but failed to make the cut in last night’s first round.

Ed Roberts earns doubles bronze at World Senior Championships

The USBC reported that Ed Roberts and Del Ballard Jr. won a bronze medal for Team USA yesterday at the WTBA World Senior Championships in Las Vegas. Roberts and Ballard tied for fourth in qualifying with Finland’s Timo Mäkelä and Teemu Raatikainen with a 2,512 score for six games and then won a one-ball roll-off to break the tie 20-19. In the semifinals, the pair lost to the USA’s Hugh Miller and Ron Mohr 379-349. Miller and Mohr then won the gold medal over Edgar Gomez and David Romero of Colombia, 450-387. Jack Brace and Ray Vervynck of Canada were the other bronze medalists.

Ed Roberts impressive in tune-up for World Senior Championships

The USBC reported that Ed Roberts won four gold medals and a silver medal in his final tune-up for the inaugural WTBA World Senior Championships, the Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas at Strikers Lanes in Sunrise, FL. Roberts only failed to win gold in super senior men’s singles, which was won by Mario Boneta of Mexico. He was paired with Dave Hurtt in men’s doubles and Dana Miller-Mackie in mixed doubles, and the other member of the team, which also won gold, was Jacqueline Smith. The other gold medal was in men’s all-events.

Good luck and good bowling to Ed starting Saturday at Red Rock Lanes! 😀

Alex Aguiar cashes in 2013 US Open

As reported by the PBA, Alex Aguiar, from Dartmouth, MA, finished 54th after today’s cashers qualifying round at the US Open in Columbus, OH. Elsewhere on the site, Alex was reported with a +23 score after 24 games of qualifying to make the cut in the 61st position, then was able to move up with a +6 block (6 games).

I posted on Facebook that, by coincidence, Alex finished one spot higher than Chris Barnes, and my post was a reference to the last time the PBA Tour was in Norwich, CT, for the Go RV’ing Match Play Championship in March of 2010, a week in which Aguiar knocked Barnes out in the first round of the tournament, then, later in the week, defeated Barnes again in the action match for Xtra Frame.

I’ve been following the action at the US Open all week on Xtra Frame, and the administrivia for this post will be that I’ll add a link to Xtra Frame to the sidebar, under the general “Bowling Sites” category.

Kevin Thibeault makes first cut at 2013 Junior Gold

The USBC reported Kevin Thibeault as having made the first cut (after 15 games) at the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships this week in Detroit, the first bowler from Westgate Lanes to do so since Danny Khuu in 2008. Kevin finished 143rd after the first advancers round today, and, given more than 1,000 entries in the under-20 boys division and the fact that three WTBA lane patterns (London, Seoul, and Sydney) were used in three different bowling centers during qualifying, is quite an accomplishment.

Congrats Kev! 😀

Note about 2013 Youth Open pattern

I’ve noted a number of “hits” from search engines, both this year and in the past, searching on terms similar to “Youth Open oil pattern”, and I believe I get these because I post the pattern (two this year) for the USBC Open Championships, which, of course, is a tournament for adults. In years past, I’ve never found the pattern for the Youth Open, but, for those who find this blog on those search terms, I did find it this year, and I’ll link it here. I hope this also proves useful.

The overall champion was Jim Martino of Niagra Falls, NY, with Alex Hoskins of Pocatello, ID finishing second. Tyrone Thornton of Mattapan, MA, who also bowls in the Coke Classic league, also cashed in the 189 & under handicap division.

May 28 practice (with follow-up on Aguiar)

My brother told me he’s going to be making more weekend visits once Harvard lets out of school, so, with Saturday mornings being taken out of play for practice, I needed to find a weekday suitable for morning practice, and decided that Tuesday was as good as any day and practiced this morning. While I couldn’t use the “too early” excuse because of my two Saturday mornings alone, I didn’t get my game together until the third game and shot 210, though it should be said that I had a 224 possible in the 10th frame.

Alex Aguiar follow-up: I’ve been meaning to note that Alex Aguiar lost the Regular Doubles lead at the USBC Open last week to a team from Missouri. While he won’t get his eagle, I’m sure he was very pleased with leaving Reno with the lead and knew it was out of his hands from that point. He will participate in the World Series of Bowling this fall, saying on the social media that he would if he didn’t have to defend the doubles title next year.

April 2013 People’s Tournament results

The People’s Tournament reported that Wayne Cleary (AMF Chicopee Lanes, 209 avg.) was the winner of the event held on Apr. 21 at Westgate Lanes. Cleary defeated Brent Watkins (Lanes & Games, 150 avg.) by a score (with handicap) of 207-190 in the title match. Representing Westgate Lanes, Josh Skuby (170 avg.) made the semifinals, while Kris Higgins (196 avg.), April Raines (177 avg.), Paris Cook (203 avg.), and Elliot Miller (180 avg.) also cashed.

Rai Doblmeier dominates deaf tournament in NJ

Congrats to Rai Doblmeier of the Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen league, who, according to the Eastern Association of Deaf Bowlers, won scratch doubles and all-events, along with the scratch singles/doubles combo event and the Trimarchi Masters competition in their tournament held on May 4 & 5 at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, NJ. Rai averaged 236+ in his regular events, and Ray DiSanto informed me that it was around 250 counting his scores in the Trimarchi Masters.

I haven’t mentioned Rai’s deaf status before on this blog because I just considered him a good bowler, but I’ve been told he’s literally traveled the world competing in tournaments for the deaf, and this is the first big result from one of those that I’ve heard about. Note: The link is to the EADB’s main site; navigate the site for full results.

Alex Aguiar, Brian LeClair take doubles lead at USBC Open

The USBC reported that Alex Aguiar, bowling with Brian LeClair of Albany, NY, took the Regular Doubles lead last night at the USBC Open Championships, currently in progress at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, NV. Alex posted a 780 series in the event, while LeClair added 642 for a total of 1,422. Alex had a shot at the first 800 series of the tournament when he stepped up for his final frame of doubles, but a 9 pin on the first ball ended the run. With a 676 in team and 664 in singles, Aguiar is also now in 10th place in Regular All-Events with a total of 2,120, a career best.

A couple of months of bowling yet to go, but great bowling, Double A! 😀

Mar. 2013 People’s Tournament results

The People’s Tournament reported Nicholas Roppo III (AMF Silver Lanes {CT}, 161 avg.) as the winner of the event held on Mar. 23 & 24 at Westgate Lanes, defeating Neal LeBaron (AMF Silver Lanes, 195 avg.) by a score (with handicap) of 240-228 in the final match. Westgate Lanes bowlers among the cashers were Sam Kamel (190 avg.), Reynard Epps (155 avg.), Al Rue (177 avg.), Keith Tantillo (200 avg.), Bill Kempton (185 avg.), Al Donato (195 avg.), Louis Lam (176 avg.), Alex Major (196 avg.), Brian Alleyne (175 avg.), and Dennis Johnson (183 avg.). While officially representing Town Line Ten Pin, David Chalifoux (206 avg.) from the Coke league also cashed.

The video of the title match is below.

Three of the Coke league bowlers, David Chalifoux, Stephen Dale Jr., and Brian Gaskill, will get worldwide exposure Saturday night at 10 PM ET when their team makes their appearance at the USBC Open Championships. Be sure to watch! 😀
