Jim Ferguson, Jason Unthank lead high scoring day at NAT

The walls around the pro shop will have many more desk printouts on them after yesterday, as it was a high-scoring day in the Northeast Amateur Tournament’s handicap singles event. The day was led by Jim Ferguson, who had 269-248-300 for an 817 on the first squad, and Jason Unthank, who posted 279-246-300 for an 825 on the second squad. Additionally, Sean Richard, Tom Hedding, Angel Hernandez, and Mike Peirce had 300 games without an 800 series, and Bill Tessier (299) and Mike Masse (298) both threw 11 in a row.

I didn’t think I had a video of my own of one of TomTom’s 300 games, so I present one below:

As usual, I will wait for the NAT to make a post before posting about the tournament’s winner.

Congrats guys! 🙂

Feb. 26 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 21 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

One of the worst nights of my bowling life, particularly in terms of pin carry and spare-making, but bowling seems to have a sense of irony, as well, as this is the first triplicate I ever remember having.

Result: 127-127-127=381
Average (63 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 154
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 583

Composite average (135 games): 174

I felt like I wasted a big night from Harry (743), but, in truth, we would have only tied the first game if I just made average.

Steve Ferraro wins NAT scratch tournament at Westgate

The Northeast Amateur Tournament, in their web newsletter, reported Steve Ferraro as the winner of the scratch event held on Feb. 5 at Westgate Lanes over Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Jim Ferguson. The final match score was lost in the reporting process and may be added later. The lane condition was the Kegel Stonehenge pattern.

Feb. 22 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 25 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

When it was clear I was pulling shots in the first game, I decided to try to combat it by actually moving my eyes right of the target, and that worked most of the rest of the night. My spare game may have benefited, as well, as I only missed one makeable spare (a 6-10, which I chopped) after the first game.

Result: 170-173-221=564
Average (72 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 174
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 549

Composite average (132 games): 175

In the first game, Donald had his best game I’d ever seen (161), but we still lost it by only three pins, and only won the second game, losing total by seven.

2016-17 Week 24 league standings update

Here are how my teams stand after Week 24 of the season; virtual league result is included:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After losing all four to Ebony & Ivories, Lane Ducks are tied for 11th with Ebony & Ivories, eight points behind Eileen On Me (tomorrow night’s opponents), who are two points ahead of Minds in the Gutter, three ahead of Sweet Rolls and Has Beens, and four ahead of Creeden’s Mustangs.
  • Sunday Niters: After winning six points from Adam & Steve, The 3 Stooges are tied for the lead with Here For Beer, two points ahead of We Found “B” (Sunday night’s opponents) and Suzy’s Crew, and eight points ahead of Avengers and Broads With Balls.
  • Virtual league: Lane Rangers won three of seven from Dream Team and are leading by four points over Splits & Washouts, six ahead of Big Guns 2.0, and 12 ahead of Dream Team and The Unbowlieveables.

Feb. 19 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 20 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I certainly was hoping for more after the first game, and, indeed, it was almost the “reverse century” in the second game, but I did save my 500 in the third game. My spare game could have been better, but I did convert both splits that I left.

Result: 222-123-169=514
Average (60 games): 177
Average for last 9 games: 163
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 562

Composite average (129 games): 175

Harry will be subbing for Peter the next few weeks, and Harry’s big first game (269) gave us a lead that was never really challenged. We did need the extra two points, and my double in the third game, along with Ed’s 206, helped decide it.

Curtis Batten bowls first 300 game in Raynham

Robbie Chappell, a bowler in the Thursday Night Mixed league at Ryan Family Amusements in Raynham, reported to me on Facebook that Curtis Batten, a member of that league, bowled a 300 second game tonight. Pending formal USBC certification, this will be the first 300 game bowled in that bowling center, which converted some of their duckpin lanes to tenpin in the summer of 2014.

Congrats Curtis! 🙂

Feb. 15 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 24 bowling, frame-by-frame

Tonight may have been one of those “turn the corner” nights because I was actually carrying most of the night, but multi-pin spares were my bane, because I didn’t make many of them. The sweetest part of the night was throwing a slow messenger at the 10 in the 3rd frame of the second game, as I haven’t thrown a messenger in quite a while.

Result: 204-179-165=548
Average (69 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 169
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 591

Composite average (126 games): 175

We were without Si, but we were bowling four against four, and the opponents that were there were all over average, with my team losing all four. Donald was over his average all three games.

2016-17 Week 23 league standings update

Updating my leagues after Week 23 of the season (including the virtual league result):

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning a half-point from Knock Em Down, Lane Ducks are in a three-way tie in points with Livin on a Spare and Creeden’s Mustangs, five points behind both Has Beens and Minds in the Gutter. The leaders are a point ahead of Eileen On Me and Sweet Rolls, and four ahead of 5 Spares. Ebony & Ivories are tomorrow night’s opponents.
  • Sunday Niters: As noted in an earlier Facebook comment to the cancellation note, our schedule picks up Sunday night vs. Adam & Steve, and the missed week will be made up at the end of the schedule.
  • Virtual league: Lane Rangers won five points from High Flush, and are leading by five points over Splits & Washouts, seven points over Big Guns 2.0, and 11 points over The Unbowlieveables.

Zach Thompson, Rich Fulton bowl 300 in Coke league

For the third time in the current segment of the Coke league, two perfect games were posted on the same night. The first of the two was in the first game by Zach Thompson, who many of you know is the tournament director of the Bay State Open. He’s sometimes said, “Always the videographer,” when he’s posted video of other bowlers’ 300s, and now we can say we have video of one of Zach’s own, below:

Zach’s 300 was followed in the second game by Rich Fulton, who has the most recent 800 series in the league (back in 2014), and the video of that is below:

Congrats to both! 🙂

Brian Egan throws 300 in NEBA at East Providence Lanes

The tournament is still in progress as I write this, but Westgate’s Brian Egan started hot in his NEBA qualifying squad today at East Providence Lanes with a 300 first game. Danny Khuu recorded the last strike, which is below:

Depending on events in the tournament, a post will be made either here or just on the Facebook page after the tournament.

WTG Brian! 🙂

Link to SCN Action Bowling added to sidebar

Rolltech has been linked in the sidebar for some time, and they now have a competitor, SCN, that is advertising their online contests this PBA television season. They offer many of the same types of contests, as well as heads-up (you vs. one opponent) and 50/50s (half of the field cashes), and others. SCN is available to bowlers whose leagues are uploaded to LeagueSecretary.com, as well as leagues in SCN partner bowling centers. Like Rolltech, the link is in the “Tournaments” sidebar list, with the SCN Action Bowling mobile apps linked on their homepage.

Link to Creating the Difference added to sidebar

I found their website from a “sponsored” post on Facebook, but I actually learned of Creating the Difference from a recuperating Brunswick Mixed bowler, Paul Felci. It is a coaching page for Ron Hickland out of Chicago, but they also sell two types of bowling products, one a cleaner and the other a product that adds length while still being USBC-approved for anytime. I anguished over whether to place the link in the “Coaching/Tips” sidebar list or “Other Equipment/Apparel” (for miscellaneous bowling products), but since you might be able to get Ron Hickland to run a clinic at your center if you can get enough bowlers to sign up, I thought the former being the best fit, especially where coach Ron Clifton also sells his “Magic Carpet” thumb inserts on his coaching site.

Link to SE Mass. Junior Scratch Travel League standings added to sidebar

I’d long suspected they existed online, but didn’t really know where to look until one of the Southeastern Mass. Junior Scratch Travel League’s current bowlers told me their standings were on LeagueSecretary.com, but listed as a Wonder Bowl league. Having found them, they’re now linked in the “Local/New England” sidebar list, and I’ll now be able to follow events in the league. Note: Two of Westgate’s teams are currently 1-2 in the standings. 🙂

Greg Andrews bowls 804, Mike Botelho 803, Sean Richard 300 in Westgate Mixed

Neither was the scoring limited to my league, as it turned out, as Greg Andrews led the way in the Westgate Mixed league last night with games of 279, 246, and 279 for an 804, followed closely by Mike Botelho, who had 266, 258, and 279 for an 803. Topping that all off, Sean Richard had the second 300 game of the night between the two leagues.

WTG! 🙂

Jake Tobin shoots 299/822, Dan Esdale 300/810 in Brunswick Mixed

There had never been an 800 series in the Brunswick Mixed league since I joined it until last night, and there are now two, as Jake Tobin led the way with games of 256, 299, and 267 for an 822, and Dan Esdale with 257, 300, and 253 for an 810. Ken Gerraughty’s video of Esdale’s last strike is below:

I had my camera going for Jake’s last shot in the second game, but, unfortunately for him, he left a 7 pin. It was still Jake’s first 800 series. Dan, of course, has had 300 games and 800 series before, but he told me this was the first time he ever put the two feats together.

Good job to both! 🙂

Feb. 8 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 23 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I felt OK about my night after the second game, but then the wheels fell off of the bus with three splits and a couple of other spare misses in the third game, including my only 10 pin miss out of five. I want to say I guessed right about the ball change in the third game, but still left two splits on the right lane.

Result: 146-181-129=456
Average (66 games): 172
Average for last 9 games: 168
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 548

Composite average (123 games): 175

I had a chance to win the second game after I doubled in the 10, but sent the shot wide for eight pins and a tie. Opponents won the other two games.

Planning a couple of posts for later.

2016-17 Week 22 league standings update

The usual league standings update (with the result in the virtual league) after Week 22 of the season:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After forfeiting to 5 Spares, Lane Ducks are now in 6th place, 1.5 points behind Has Beens and Minds in the Gutter, and a half-point behind Eileen On Me, Livin’ on a Spare, and Sweet Rolls. Knock Em Down are tomorrow night’s opponents.
  • Sunday Niters: The Sunday Niters league had the week off for the Super Bowl, and The 3 Stooges will be bowling against Adam & Steve when the league resumes Sunday night.
  • Virtual league: Lane Rangers won four points from Big Guns 2.0, enabling us to increase our lead over them to six points, with Splits & Washouts seven points behind and Dream Team 10 points back. There were two honor scores submitted last week, a 300 game by Smooth Stroker (Splits & Washouts) and a 297 game by sk8shorty01 (Dream Team).

Sean Richard shoots 300 in TNT

Although it won’t be sanctioned, Sean Richard had yet another 300 game Tuesday night in the “Tuesday Night Tournament” pot games on the Big Ben Coke shot (but it was the last week the pot games will be on that lane condition). One of the other Coke league bowlers posted a video on Facebook, but the privacy setting does not allow me to share it here.

WTG $eany! 🙂

2017 Mass. state tournament information

With my new expanded New England bowling coverage on Facebook, I’ve been posting state tournament information for the other New England states on the Facebook page, but I will always devote an actual blog post to the Massachusetts state tournaments, and I should have the information for this year’s tournaments now:

  • The state open tournament will be held at Gardner Ten Pin weekends from Apr. 15-May 7 and May 13 (not May 14, which is Mother’s Day), with the entry form available on the Greater Gardner association website (but I suggest saving and printing out the images, as the entry form appears to be a set of JPEG images). In a first for the state tournament, the Greater Gardner association is accepting online payment of entry fees; look for button on the website link above. Mail-in entries close Apr. 1, but walk-in entries are accepted cash-only on the basis of lane availability.
  • The women’s tournament will be held weekends from May 6-21 at Westgate Lanes. Entry forms are available in the state’s bowling centers, and I’ve made a PDF copy available here. Entries for the tournament also close Apr. 1.
  • The youth tournament will take place Apr. 29-30 and May 6-7 at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford, with the entry form available on the youth association website (PDF format) and closing Feb. 27. Note: Westgate Lanes is already scheduled to bowl on the first weekend.

Feb. 1 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 22 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My first game was one of my worst recent efforts, but as bad as I was in that game, I was better in my other two to save a 525. I didn’t have a game without a split, getting two 7-10s and an 8-10 during the night.

Result: 126-202-197=525
Average (63 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 168
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 551

Composite average (120 games): 175

With Barry sick (meaning no Donald, either) and Si working late, we forfeited, but I still had to bowl for virtual league, if nothing else.

2016 Brockton Holiday Doubles team score follow-up

There was the formality of the Brockton USBC BA filing the paperwork, but, with that done, three team scores from the recent Holiday Doubles tournament now sit on the national leaderboard, the 1,635 series by Brian Gaskill & Steve Dale Jr., which is currently the only qualifying series, and two games, the 577 bowled by Jim Ferguson & Danny Khuu and the 553 bowled by Gaskill & Dale. For Ferguson & Khuu, it is their second consecutive year on the national leaderboard, having bowled the only 600 doubles game in the nation last season in the state tournament in N. Adams. Also, as the high doubles series in the nation last season was a 1,638, there’s every chance Gaskill & Dale hold on for the National High Score award.
