2016-17 Week 21 league standings update

Updating my leagues after Week 21 of the season, with the result in the virtual league included:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning 3.5 points from Team 12, Lane Ducks are leading Sweet Rolls by a half-point, Minds in the Gutter by 1.5 points, and three teams, Eileen On Me, Livin’ on a Spare, and Has Beens, by 2.5 points. 5 Spares will be tomorrow night’s opponents. Jeff had the high scratch series (476) in the men’s “D” division last week.
  • Sunday Niters: After winning six points from Suzy’s Crew, The 3 Stooges are tied for the lead in points with Here For Beer, two points ahead of We Found “B”, and four points ahead of Suzy’s Crew, Avengers, and Broads With Balls. The league will not meet this week (Super Bowl Sunday), so next week’s update will include our opponents for the following week in this league.
  • Virtual league: Lane Rangers won all seven from Team Square Balls and are now leading by five points over Big Guns 2.0, eight points over Splits & Washouts, and nine points over The Unbowlieveables. A member of The Unbowlieveables, explorer05, submitted a 300 game last week, his first entry in the league’s honor score list.

2017 Brockton city tournament honor score wrap-up

I am taking care of all of the honor scores from the city tournament in this post because they all were bowled yesterday.

The first squad saw a pair of 800 series, one by Sean Richard, who had games of 269, 259, and 278 for an 806, and the other by Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Ryan Yelle, who had 266, 268, and 268 for an 802.

The lone 300 of the tournament was bowled by a bowler who made the trip from greater Boston, John Gravel, during the second squad, and Shawn Hagan’s video of the last strike is below:

Finally, on the same squad as Gravel’s 300, Rob Young had a 299 game.

I will post a link to the unofficial results on the Facebook page when I see them.

Update: Jon Hester told me tonight that he also had a 290 game in his singles event. Also, I forgot to mention that Sam Kamel converted the Big 4 (4-6-7-10) split during the second squad, which was the first time that split had ever been converted while I was in the building.

My Week 19 bowling, frame-by-frameย (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I had another bad night after working an association event, but this one was at least tempered by a good second game. The two splits in the third game were killer, as they kept me under 500 for the night.

Result: 137-215-147=499
Average (57 games): 177
Average for last 9 games: 170
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 542

Composite average (117 games): 175

Peter had the best night of us. Team won the first two games and almost stole the third; the two were won by enough for total and 6 points.

Shawn Coles posts 300 in Brunswick Mixed

It had been a long time coming for him, but Shawn Coles, my Wednesday league secretary, bowled his first 300 game in over a decade last night. In a first for this blog, I have video of the last shot, the first video on this blog from one of my own leagues:

Shawn had told me a long time ago that he’d never had a 300 with his wife, Jo-Ann, present, and that finally happened for him last night, as well.

WTG Shawn! ๐Ÿ™‚

Jan. 25 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 21 bowling, frame-by-frameย (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

After struggling for most of first two games, I saw, thanks to a Brooklyn strike, that I could open the lanes up, and that helped me not only finish out the second game, but start the third game strong. My spare game was spotty, and both of my single pin misses were in the first game, but I later converted a washout and a split (the 4-5).

Result: 150-193-189=532
Average (60 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 167
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 554

Composite average (114 games): 175

My 10 pin miss in the 10th meant a tied first game, and we won the other two and total.

A special post is coming tomorrow. Something happened tonight for a friend in the league that I was able to record.

2016-17 Week 20 league standings update

Updating my leagues through Week 20 of ย the season, including the result for my virtual league team:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning four forfeit points from WTF (We’re The Five), Lane Ducks are tied for the lead with Eileen On Me and Sweet Rolls, two points ahead of both Team #12 (tomorrow night’s opponents) and Minds in the Gutter.
  • Sunday Niters: After winning six points from Ball Busterz, The 3 Stooges are tied with Suzy’s Crew for first, two points ahead of four other teams; as we have Suzy’s Crew for opponents Sunday night, it’ll be basically a position week for us.
  • Virtual league: Lane Rangers won all seven from 7 Baggers and are in first by a point over Big Guns 2.0, two ahead of Team Square Balls, and three ahead of Splits & Washouts.

Shawn Hagan, Barry Muise score 300s in Coke league

It appears that the Coke shot for this quarter is playing easy, even with the modification down to 5:1, as, for the second time in as many weeks, there were two 300 games last night. The first came in the first game by Shawn Hagan, and my Facebook video is below:

The other one was bowled by Barry Muise in the second game, which, again, I have Facebook video of, below:

Well done, both of you! ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t think I’m going to get a chance to get their photo, but Lights Out, team members Sean Richard, Hakim Emmanuel, Devon McGregor, and Shawn Hagan, won the Coke league’s second quarter. Congrats, guys! ๐Ÿ™‚

Jan. 22 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 18 bowling, frame-by-frameย (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

On a night I was hoping to follow up on a good Special Olympics day by my niece, I struggled to put anything together. There were no doubles and I missed a bunch of spares, with my 7 pin more my nemesis than the 10.

Result: 160-154-145=459
Average (54 games): 178
Average for last 9 games: 182
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 564

Composite average (111 games): 175

Except for the first game, my teammates picked me up for six points, with both Peter and Ed getting over 500.

2017 Dan Hamilton Memorial Tournament results

2017-dan-hamilton-memorial
Cashers in the inaugural Dan Hamilton Memorial Tournament (L-R): Eric Derochers (1st), Chuck Gerlach (3rd), Sean Richard (2nd) (Photo courtesy of Stephanie Hamilton)

33 bowlers came out today for the inaugural Dan Hamilton Memorial Tournament, with Eric Derochers 1st with 1,068 (four games, with handicap), Sean Richard 2nd with 1,042, and Chuck Gerlach 3rd with 1,034.

I also learned a detail about Dan’s bowling career that I missed in a previous post: He was a NEBA champion, having won at age 19 at Silver Lanes in E. Hartford, CT.

The Hamilton family would like to thank everyone who came out today, whether you bowled or not.

Link to Bowling Beyond 200 added to sidebar

If you look atย Bowling Beyond 200’s URL, it appears to be another blog. In fact, it is actually serving as a landing page for the podcast of that name, and the link has been added to the sidebar in the “Bowling Streaming/Videos” category. To reiterate, however, there may be enough podcast content in the category to move bowling podcasts to their own category, but that decision will be made this summer.

Link to Track My Roll added to sidebar

I’ve come across a promising new bowling mobile app, Track My Roll, on Facebook and have added its web homepage to the sidebar in the “Bowling Software/Apps” category. What this app appears to do is something that used to take a full CATS system to do, track a ball’s path, giving laydown board, breakpoint, ball speed, launch angle, and entry angle, all using the camera in almost every smartphone and tablet. Endorsed by USBC Gold coach Ron Hatfield (whose coaching site I’ve also added, under “Coaching/Tips”), it is currently available for iOS (link to iTunes page on website) and, hopefully, soon for Android.

Jim Ferguson shoots 299 in Patriots league

Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Jim Ferguson has had a few 299 games, the latest last night in the Patriots league, and, though I usually don’t show video for anything but a 300 game, I decided to post Sean Richard’s Facebook video here for one prevailing reason: You won’t often see the kingpin (5 pin) stop a 300 game.

Maybe next time, Jim! ๐Ÿ™‚

Tina Gannon, Harry Thibeault Jr. elected to Brockton USBC BA Hall of Fame

As announced in the Facebook post above, the Brockton Bowling Association elected Tina Gannon and Harry Thibeault Jr. this week to its Hall of Fame. Tina, the second woman elected and first for Bowling Achievement, is a past association tournament champion and a many-time state women’s tournament champion, along with being a TNBA national tournament champion and holding other regional titles. Harry has also been an association tournament champion along with being Bowler of the Year champion in 2001 and a Southeastern Mass. association singles champion.

The association hopes to announce plans for the induction dinner in the near future.

Jan. 18 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 20 bowling, frame-by-frameย (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

After the first game, I never really had it, with the second game exacerbated by my inability to cover a 10 pin. I made a ball change to my Tropical Breeze late in the second game to try to hold pocket, but that ball eventually wasn’t finishing.

Result: 180-135-146=461
Average (57 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 167
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 564

Composite average (108 games): 176

In a forfeit situation, Barry bowled the best of us, with Donald and Si also picking me up after the first game for all four points.

2016-17 Week 19 league standings update

Updating my leagues after Week 19:

  • Brunswick Mixed: Lane Ducks was one of three teams winning three points in the first week of the second half, and four teams, Eileen On Me, Sweet Rolls, Minds in the Gutter, and Spear the 10 Pin, won all four to start the second half. WTF (We’re The Five) are tomorrow night’s opponents.
  • Sunday Niters: After winning two points from Here For Beer, The 3 Stooges joined Adam & Steve, Pinknockers, and Broads with Balls in a tie for second place, with Here For Beer alone in first, two points ahead. Ball Busterz are Sunday night’s opposition.
  • Virtual league: Lane Rangers (what my team named ourselves) started by winning five points (out of seven) from Teamย 6 (yet unnamed). Team 1 (yet unnamed) won all seven to start the league, and Team Square Balls was the other team winning five; Team 8 (unnamed) won four to start the league. Lane Rangers also tied with Team 1 for high team game of the week.

Gino Beniamino, Jon Hester shoot 300s in Coke league

I’d been a regular in-person observer of the Coke league for a while, but something happened last night that hadn’t happened since before that time (note about that to follow): Two 300 games on the same night. The first of the night was bowled by Gino Beniamino in the first game, and, thanks to Shawn Scales, I have video of the last strike (which Shawn originally posted on Snapchat):

Gino told me (and others) that this was actually his first 300 game ever.

It would take until the end of the night for Jon Hester to post the other one, which Zach Thompson got the video of and is shared here:

Hester figures in the note about last night, in that the only other time in my memory there were two 300 games on the same night in the Coke league, Jon’s teammate, Matt Yandek, had both of them as bookends in an 801 series.

Good work guys! ๐Ÿ™‚

Paris Cook wins NAT doubles at Town Line

jan-2017-nat-doubles
Finalists of the Jan. 2017 Northeast Amateur Tournament handicap doubles event at Town Line Luxury Lanes (L-R): Winners Paris Cook & Mike Macedo, runners-up Sean Richard & Dave Chalifoux (Photo courtesy of NAT)

The new Northeast Amateur Tournament held its first handicap event, a doubles event, yesterday at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden, and they reportedย on Facebookย (must be logged into Facebook to view link) that Westgate bowler Paris Cook teamed with Mike Macedo to win, defeating to-be-inducted Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Sean Richard, with partner Dave Chalifoux (who has bowled in the Coke league), 460-452 (with handicap), in the final match.

Jan. 15 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 17 bowling, frame-by-frameย (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I will always take a night like tonight. I didn’t really have long strings of strikes, but I made most of the spares I was supposed to, missing on only one single pin on the night (a 10 pin in the third game). My third game was good enough to get my +1 for this league on the button, and it also raised my composite average.

Result: 180-192-204=576
Average (51 games): 180
Average for last 9 games: 180
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 594

Composite average (105 games): 177

Unfortunately, Peter really struggled tonight, but the team did win the third game. Ed had the only game of my teammates that was higher than one of my games (181 first game).

Tom Hedding, Nick Grossi roll 300s in Patriots league

“TomTom” Hedding is currently leading the house in average, and he’s doing everything in his power to try to stay there, as he had a 300 game last night in the Patriots league. Sean Richard’s Facebook video of “TomTom’s” last shot in the 300 game is below.

“TomTom” wasn’t the only bowler with a 300 game last night, however, as Nick Grossi also bowled his very first one. WTG to both! ๐Ÿ™‚

2016-17 Coke league 3rd quarter lane condition

Junior has selected theย Kegel Big Benย pattern as the lane condition for the 3rd quarter of the Coke league, which starts Monday night. It is a 44′ pattern with 24.7 mL total oil at a 7.33:1 ratio. The top view graph is linked on the pattern name.

As an additional note, the flyer for the Dan Hamilton Memorial Tournament has been revised a number of times, and I’ll be updating the Google Calendar event with the latest one shortly.

Update: The Coke league pattern, as posted on the bulletin board next to the pro shop (and not the one that’s in the pro shop), is actually a modified version of Big Ben, with a ratio closer to 5:1.

Jan. 11 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 19 bowling, frame-by-frameย (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

The lanes were playing tighter than in recent weeks tonight, and it really took me a game to adjust, but I had two games over average after that. The good thing was I didn’t hurt myself by missing single pins.

Result: 161-176-179=516
Average (54 games): 174
Average for last 9 games: 168
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 560

Composite average (102 games): 176

With Jeff pre-bowling, team took three of four, with Barry high man on the pair. Si was also over average tonight.

Richard, Ferguson, & Zimmerman win Bay State Open trios

As reported to me by the Bay State Open, Sean Richard, Mark Zimmerman, and Jim Ferguson, all Westgate bowlers, won their first-ever trios event Sunday at East Providence Lanes by defeating John Gant, George Jones, and Calvin Scott by a score (with handicap) of 525-486 in the two game, Baker format final match. The Bay State open has posted a video of the final match, which is below.
