Ed Roberts captures 2nd SEMBA title in Malden

As reported in the Facebook post below, Ed Roberts went undefeated in match play for his second SEMBA title yesterday at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden. There were 17 entries, and the tournament was contested on the Kegel Abbey Road pattern.

Sept. 11 Sunday Niters recap

Our third turned out to be Ed Godino Jr., whom I’ve crossed against for years in the Brunswick Mixed league. We decided to keep Peter’s team name, The 3 Stooges.

My Week 1 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I was forced into more loft by the lane conditions after the tournament today, and I ran into some over/under the way I was playing the lanes. Somehow, I did manage to make that work, as I was able to make a bunch of 6-10 spares, and capitalize on some Brooklyn strikes in the third game with some better shots for a 225. It did feel good to get the 600 out of the way. πŸ™‚

Result: 190-187-225=602
Average (3 games): 200
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 604

Composite average (6 games): 191

Our opponents had a new bowler who may have been averaging in, but I was told the recap was marked with all eight points for us. My 602 was high on the pair.

“Mr. 900” perfect in Bay State Open

“Mr. 900” Hakim Emmanuel now has six 300 games to his credit after posting one in qualifying today for the Bay State Open event. The surprise is that this one was not on lanes 47 & 48, as the Bay State Open’s video below shows:

As a personal note, this was also Hakim’s first one that I was actually there for. πŸ™‚

Congrats again Hakim! πŸ™‚

2016 Youth Open national award follow-up

I hadn’t checked it since just after they bowled it, but the national leaderboards for bothΒ gameΒ andΒ seriesΒ in youth 17-20 doubles show that Stephen & Aaron Major have the high scores from their performance in the Youth Open. Where the national deadline for reporting team scores for the season was Sept. 1, it should be all but official that they will win the national high score awards for those categories.

Congrats again guys! πŸ™‚

Links to Steve’s Bowling Blog, ActionBowling.com added to sidebar

I saw Steve Curless, a Facebook user apparently friends with Jeff Richgels, post an article from his blog, Steve’s Bowling Blog, as a comment to one of Riggs’ articles, and, since I’m always looking for bowling blogs to link to, I added his to the blogroll.

Steve’s blog also led to another discovery: ActionBowling.com, which is a site all about the colorful action bowling scene in New York in the 1950s and 1960s. Being a student of bowling history, I thought the site worth a link, and it’s in my “Bowling Sites” catch-all, even though a web request to just the domain redirects to the blog.

2016 Mass. state senior tournaments note

I may not have entry forms available for linking right now, but I do need to note that the open senior tournament will take place Oct. 29 & 30 at Gardner Ten Pin, and the women’s senior tournament on Nov. 5 & 6 at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden. If I get entry form links, I’ll update the post.

Open tournament entry form update: The entry form for the open senior tournament is on the Greater Gardner association website, but they chose to post the form as an image, and, although they do have a print button on the page, I don’t really recommend it; instead, save the entry form image and print it using something else (right-clicking the file and choosing “Print” in Windows File Explorer or similar should work for desktop PCs).

Sept. 7 Brunswick Mixed recap

I do have my full team, and a suggestion of Lane Ducks for a team name was made, which I liked when I heard it.

My Week 1 bowling, frame-by-frameΒ (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

My vacation from bowling paid immediate dividends, as I had my most promising first week of league in a while. I had a chance at 600 through two games, but then the strikes just weren’t coming. My spare game was a bit iffy, but I did convert my toughest chance of the night, a 4-7-10.

Result: 201-191-156=548
Average (3 games): 182
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 550

Our opponents had a couple of new bowlers who were averaging in, so we won’t know about points until the first week’s standings are posted. Barry’s night was kind of a carbon copy of mine, but with lower scores.

2016-17 Author’s links transition

While I was still bowling my summer league, I’d have to do the transition of league-related links in the “Author’s links” sidebar category, including my BowlSK league indexes and spreadsheet logs, twice a year, but, not bowling summer this year, the transition to the winter was made much easier, as I could just paste the new URLs to everything in my links settings rather than delete summer league links. The BowlSK indexes and spreadsheet logs don’t really have anything right now, but I did set them up for the new season, which begins tonight for my Wednesday night league. The bracket results log will still be the old one, and that won’t be done until brackets in my Wednesday night league start back up in Week 4 (assuming I still get in brackets). Finally, I’m assuming the links to the league standings won’t change, so that’s another way being a winter-only bowler is easier.

2016-17 Westgate house shot

Rob Lawson has released to me the Westgate Lanes house shot for this season, the PDF of which is linked below:

Westgate 2016 House Shot

It is a 45′ pattern at an 8:1 ratio, and, as you can see from the PDF, there is quite a bit of shape to it.

I do hope to get a copy of the shot to the pro shop before Wednesday, but that might depend a lot on the weather.

Update: On a second look at the pattern, I thought it looked familiar, and, checking my post with it, it did look similar to the shot of two years ago, which we’ve affectionately dubbed the “Hakim” shot (because of the 900 series on it). It is the same length, with a little less volume, and with the middle oil ending earlier downlane. The ratio is lower, so we’ll see if this shot plays a bit tougher than two years ago.

Link to Junior Bowling Sport Challenge added to sidebar

I’m very proud as a New England bowler to report that the website for the Junior Bowling Sport Challenge, Sharon Evans’ highly successful Junior Gold qualifying program, is now live and linked in the “Local/New England” sidebar list. Sharon’s still working on stuff, but most of it is functional. πŸ™‚

EDIT: Forgot to do it when first posted, but the site is also now linked in this post, for those who might be viewing the post through the Facebook share.

Links to Moxy Bowling, Bowler Store added to sidebar

I do try to have all of the USBC-approved ball manufacturer sites linked in the sidebar, and a new one added today is Moxy Bowling, which I found in a “sponsored” Facebook post by Bowlerstore.com, whose link has also been added.

I did also use the opportunity to do “housekeeping” on the equipment-related sites, removing links that appeared to be dead as well as changing those that appeared to have been moved. Part of the “housekeeping” was that the online pro shops had outgrown placement in the (newly renamed) “Other Equipment/Apparel” list, and links to online pro shops are now in their own category.

Always trying to improve the site. πŸ™‚

Links to High 5 Gear, Logo Infusion added to sidebar

I’ve wanted to do it for a while, but, finally, I got links to two of the most popular bowling shirt makers, High 5 Gear and Logo Infusion, into the sidebar. Both can do custom bowling shirts, and High 5 Gear is also the PBA’s official bowling shirt company, so you can find replica jerseys for most of the PBA’s stars there. The links are in the renamed “Other Equipment/Apparel” listing.

Fall/Winter 2016-17 ramp-up

As far as my status for the coming bowling season goes, I do hope to be in the two leagues I was in last year, but I’ll have to see if I can continue on Sunday night once Monday night gets going, as I’ll be paying for both leagues out of my bracket commissions.

I hope to have my full team back on Wednesday night, but Jeff told me he’s been having issues with his vision this summer, so I’ll have to see whether he can continue. As far as Sunday night goes, Lee and Rachel do have their third bowler this year, so I ended up on a team with Peter Michelson, whom I’d seen on Wednesday night in the past. Our third is still to be determined.

Tonight was the Brunswick Mixed meeting, with their no-tap following. It was on what will be at least close to the season’s house shot, and the return tonight was encouraging, as I had a 629 no-tap series. I did want to try the three balls I had on the premises, and I abandoned the Alpha Crux in practice. The biggest part of the night was switching to my Marvel Pearl in the third game and running up the first seven (including no-tap strikes), with a couple of splits in the 8th & 9th holding the score down to a 245. I want to say Laura Beaudet had a night in the 860s, so she probably won (the women were bowling 8 pin no-tap).

Finally, the fall virtual league starts for the bowlers on Monday (Labor Day), and my yet unnamed team has Bwlnggd, jbungard, steveA, and Stubs. I think I’ve been jbungard’s teammate before, but I believe this is my first time with the others.

New England state association links added to sidebar

I figured that now that I’m covering other New England bowling news on Facebook, I should get the New England state associations linked inΒ the sidebar (in the “Local/New England” category). I already had the ones for Massachusetts and Rhode Island, so added are Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. As an aside, it appeared that Massachusetts was the only New England state for which the women’s and youth associations aren’t merged with the men, so I will beΒ revisiting the Massachusetts links in 2018, by which time the associations will be merged, as voted on by the USBC Convention in April.

2016-17 Westgate Warriors schedule

The Westgate Warriors’ schedule for the 2016-17 UBA season tour has been released, with new team president Zach Thompson providing it in the image below:

2016-17 Westgate Warriors schedule

I’m not sure about home centers for some of the new teams, but I’m fairly certain the Warriors are opponents for the New England Heat’s home match on Oct. 8. As indicated above, the Westgate home match is Dec. 4 vs. the Mill City Mayhem (out of Lowell).

Note: I had an earlier post with the schedule, but Zach made some revisions, so this post will have the official schedule.

Sean Richard repeats as Brockton association high average

According to theΒ Brockton Bowling Association yearbook, published yesterday, Sean Richard was association high average for a second year in a row with his 234 in the Westgate Mixed league. Going by highest average only, the other Westgate bowlers in the top five were Tom Hedding (233, Thursday Night Patriots), Rob Young (233, Thursday Night Patriots), Greg Andrews (231, Westgate Mixed), and Jim Ferguson (229, Thursday Night Patriots). The high averages in the other centers in the association were a tie between James Burt and Dan Vincent at North Bowl (228, Monday Merchants), Tina Gannon in Kingston (213, Wednesday Night Mixed), a tie between Keith DeCambra and Steve Parmeggiani at Ryan Family Amusements in Raynham (208, NAAITL), and Buddy Wilt at Boston Bowl Hanover (204, Monday Mixers).

Good work everyone. πŸ™‚

John Bekish wins July 2016 NAT at Westgate

July 2016 NAT finalists
Finalists of the July Northeast Amateur Tournament at Westgate Lanes (L-R): Champion John Bekish, runner-up Paris Cook (Photo courtesy of NAT)

InΒ the current web newsletter, the Northeast Amateur Tournament reported John Bekish as the winner of the event held on July 24 at Westgate Lanes, defeating Paris Cook, 253-248 (with handicap) in the title match. There were 75 entries, and, along with Paris, Keith Kaestner, Chuck Paige II, and Sean Richard were the other Westgate cashers.

Keven Williams’ Drone Reviews added to sidebar

I’m always looking for interesting new bowling content to link to, and I came across Storm/Roto staffer Keven Williams’ YouTube channel. It’s a ball review channel, but a pretty interesting one, as he’s recently started using footage from a GoPro drone over the lanes in his videos. The different take on reviews made it worth a link in the sidebar, under the “Bowling Streaming/Videos” category.

2016-17 Westgate league meeting schedule set

The fall league meeting schedule at Westgate Lanes has been set;Β for the first time to my memory, Facebook events for the individual league meetings have been set up, and the Westgate Lanes event list can be foundΒ here. For any prospective new league members, you may wish to consultΒ the league scheduleΒ to find out when the leagues bowl (first day and time). If you’re on Facebook and interested in bowling a league, please indicate that you are “Going” on the event for the league(s) you wish to bowl in.

Of course, pre-registration is also on for the youth leagues during the month of August, with a fee of $15 and first week of bowling free if pre-registered. The Facebook event list linked in the above paragraph also has the meeting for the junior and senior age divisions, at which teams will be formed.
