Mar. 13 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 26 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Tonight was rather disappointing, as I never put together two strikes, and had some spare misses in the last game that left me only a pin over average on the night. Three single pin misses, and none were the 10.

Result: 174-171-148=493
Average (75 games): 164
Average for last 9 games: 163
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 569

Composite average (156 games): 166

Lee shot 738 tonight, but the real strength of the first game was Rachel, who had her personal best 185. Team won the first two games and hung on to win total by four pins.

Mar. 12 Brunswick Mixed standings update

After winning three points from Team 14, Seven Deadly Pins moved into a tie in points for 9th with Lost Empire 2 and Right Turn Clyde, four points behind the new leaders, Creeden’s Mustangs, who lead Lickety Splits by a point, 4 BAGA + 1 by point and a half, and Steak and Lettuce and Sweet Rolls by two points. Spare Us will be our Wednesday night opposition.

2016 NEBA lane condition note

While NEBA itself hasn’t announced the lane condition for next weekend’s event at Westgate Lanes, the bowling center announced in a Facebook event that it will be the 2007 Weber Cup Day 3 pattern, with a link to the top graph on the pattern name. If the pattern is familiar to Westgate bowlers, it’s because that was the pattern for the recently-concluded second third of the Coke league season.

Also, NEBA has recently begun streaming their championship matches live on Periscope, so it’ll pay to keep following both NEBA’s Facebook page and Twitter feed for the link to the stream; it’ll be some time after 6 PM that Sunday night.

Mar. 11 Sunday Niters standings update

After winning all eight points from Macs, Pin Pals stand in a tie in points for 5th place with Bowling Stones, 14 points behind Suzy’s Crew, who lead Where is B? by five points and The 3 Stooges (our opponents Sunday night) by eight points.

Individually, Lee had both the high game (258) and series (706) of the week in the league.

Mar. 9 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 27 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Scored better than my bowling tonight, because six of my 14 strikes were Brooklyn strikes, two of them coming together to cover my only open frame of the second game. In said second game, I also had a double on two better shots for my first deuce game in a while.

Result: 161-205-186=552
Average (81 games): 169
Average for last 9 games: 166
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 534

Composite average (153 games): 167

Barry told me he and Donald pre-bowled, but we couldn’t use them because it was a position night. The rest of the team still did enough to win the first two games by enough for total, with the third game a close loss that could have easily been a fourth point.

A new trick

Wanting to have more options for brackets available, particularly for things like the Brockton Bowling Association’s Bowler of the Year tournament, I recently splurged for Treasure Software’s Perfect Brackets, which I had seen has options for two-game brackets (needing two-gamers for the above-mentioned event), but other options opened up for the Coke league.

My original thought was a “super bracket”, which would have had 27 slots for three rounds (and needing to beat two bowlers instead of just one to advance), but having mentioned that some sweepers could be run with Perfect Brackets, and describing the sweeper options, I was told the Coke league used to run a mystery doubles, where a bowler enters and is drawn a doubles partner at random from among the other entrants. In the lead-up to last night, as I wanted to do the new events at the start of the third, some bowlers liked both options, but not really enough of them said they were interested in the 27-slot bracket, so I announced a mystery doubles sweeper that started last night.

At first, I thought I’d be able to run a sweeper that allowed bowlers to enter multiple times, but, seeing when I set the sweeper up over the weekend that the multiple entries option wasn’t available for a blind draw sweeper, I went with my original plan of a $10 sweeper paying 1 in 5 teams. When I started it last night, I thought the payout option of “1 in X” would automatically pay the correct number of teams, but soon realized that it might have meant “pay 1 in X bowlers”, which would have been wrong. I had 22 bowlers, enough for 11 teams, so I had to use the other payout option, telling it to specifically pay three places. To get the payouts in even dollars, I kicked back a small amount of money into the prize fund, as well. The final payout was $100 for the winning team, $60 for second, and $40 for third.

Another thing I like about Perfect Brackets is that, like Perfect Secretary, which I use to run the virtual league, reports can be saved to a choice of formats (notably PDF files and PNG images), so I remembered to get a PNG image of the final sweeper standings, which I present below:

First mystery doubles_page1

Linwood Cowen Jr. entered both brackets and the sweeper and had a great night compared to his average, so it was no surprise he did well in both. I actually found the standings report later in the night, so it might have been possible to let everyone in the sweeper know who they’re paired with that night, and I’ll be getting feedback on how everyone wants me to run it.

All-in-all, I’d have to say the first mystery doubles sweeper was a success, and it will probably become a staple of the Coke league’s side action as long as I’m running it.

Winter 2016 Week 8 virtual league results

Mad Blogger & Co. won five points from Team 2, and now sit in a tie for 5th place with Fantastic Four and House Hacks, 16 points behind the leaders, Pay the Lineage, who lead Little Lebowski by five points and Team 2 by 13 points. The team had the high team game of the week in the league with a 911 first game.

Special note about one of my virtual league teammates: You know a house is tough if there’s never been an 800 series in over 50 years of its history, and TimL put up a 762 last week, which is now the house record in his house in South Dakota, which opened in 1964.

Finally, wronghander, who most of you know is really my friend on the North Shore, Bill Sheehey, submitted his 4th career 300 game, but the first of his that’s counted for the virtual league. WTG Bill! 🙂

Mar. 6 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 25 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

This was my best Sunday night since early December, and I thought I bowled better than my scores. I was 82% on makeable spares tonight, with the three missed ones all coming in the second game, in which my punch-out from the “foundation” 9th saved my over-average game. I made my +1 score on the button.

Result: 167-167-192=526
Average (72 games): 164
Average for last 9 games: 159
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 567

Composite average (150 games): 166

Lee was the only one on the team with a game under his average tonight, but still had two other games in the 250s for his 700 (706). Team won all eight, with my strikes in the 10th second game coming in a fairly clutch situation (needed to go 9-out to win).

Mar. 6 Brunswick Mixed standings update

After failing to win points from Ebony & Ivories, Seven Deadly Pins moved down into a three-way tie in points for 9th with Lost Empire 2 and Striking Gentlemen, four points behind leaders Steak and Lettuce and Creeden’s Mustangs. 4 BAGA + 1 is in 3rd by a half-point, Sweet Rolls in 4th by a point, Mixed Nuts in 5th by a point and a half, and Lickety Splits in 6th by two points. The position round sorting has us facing Team 14, in 12th a point behind us, for the second time in three weeks.

Sub needed Friday night in BBIS league

John Hayes Jr. asked me to pass along that the BBIS league needs one or two subs for a bowler this coming Friday night. One of the subs must have an average between 123 and 163 to replace a sub who started last Friday night, but the other sub can have an average between 123 (20 pins less than the sub’s average) and 193 (20 pins higher than the regular bowler’s average). If you meet the above criteria and can come in to bowl Friday night, please contact John Hayes Jr. or use the contact form on this blog and I can pass along to John.

Mar. 2 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 26 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Lanes were playing tighter than usual, so I was playing my “B” game a good deal of the night, but the double 7th & 8th frames third game were pretty good shots for my “B” game. I had three single pin misses that game, including consecutive 10s, or that third game would have been better.

Result: 187-136-156=479
Average (78 games): 169
Average for last 9 games: 163
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 576

Composite average (147 games): 166

Team lost all four, but highlights for my team were a 222 game from Barry, and Si made a couple of tougher splits, a 6-7-10 and a 5-7 (lefty).

Mike Macedo wins Feb. 21 NAT at Westgate

Finalists of the Feb. 21 NAT event at Westgate Lanes: Champion Mike Macedo, runner-up Ralph Dahlgren (Photo courtesy of NAT)

In their current newsletter, the Northeast Amateur Tournament reported that Mike Macedo became just the second back-to-back NAT champion by winning the Feb. 21 event at Westgate Lanes after winning the previous event at Strikers East. Macedo defeated Ralph Dahlgren (who is a Westgate bowler) in the final match, 298-278 (with handicap).

Besides Dahlgren, other Westgate bowlers cashing were Chris Mark, Bill Briggs, AJ Voisine, Hakim Emmanuel, and Zach Thompson. Also, congrats to Mike Antonucci, who had a 300 game during qualifying in this tournament.

Lights Out wins 2015-16 Coke league second third

Congrats to Lights Out, with members Shawn Hagan, Hakim Emmanuel, Devon McGregor, and Dave Chalifoux, for wrapping up the second third of the Coke league season last night. With 481.5 points, they also start the last third in the lead for overall points (the prize fund pays out for each third of the season, as well as for overall points).

Westgate to host “BBA Madness” Apr. 10

The Brockton USBC BA will conduct its inaugural “BBA Madness” tournament on Apr. 10 at Westgate Lanes. The tournament poster is linked here, but the qualifying format may take some explaining, as it’s certainly different: Instead of pinfall, qualifying will be based on head-to-head wins in each game against the field, i.e. if there are 100 entries and you have the highest score in a game, that will be 99 wins. Bracketed single-elimination finals follow qualifying, and the association is advertising a $500 first prize with 64 entries.

UPDATE: I’ve scanned the full tournament rules and placed them in this PDF file.

The league is now halfway through the regular schedule (eight weeks left, including position round).

The RI Ladies Classic reported on their Facebook page that Tina Gannon won her second title on Feb. 27 at Alley Katz in Westerly, RI after defeating Janice Harrington 217-194 (with handicap; Tina was bowling scratch) in the title match. It was reported that Harrington needed a double to capture the title, but left a solid 7 pin.

Congrats again Tina! 🙂

Feb. 28 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 24 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I had a decent first game, but the night became too “trick or treat” after that. The last two games were punctuated by six splits, but I did manage to make a couple of the easier ones.

Result: 177-147-126=450
Average (69 games): 163
Average for last 9 games: 151
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 526

Composite average (144 games): 166

Lee started with a 258, but Rachel managed to be high on the team second game with a 155. Team split the points 4-4, but in both of the last two games, we could have secured the points with a double from me in the 10th, but I failed to deliver.

Feb. 27 Brunswick Mixed standings update

After failing to win points from Team 14, Seven Deadly Pins fell to 4th place, three points behind Steak and Lettuce, who lead 4 BAGA + 1 by a point and a half and Creeden’s Mustangs by two points. Four teams are tied in points for 5th, a point behind us. Ebony and Ivories will be Wednesday night’s opponents, with a position round coming up the following week.
