July 15 league night recap

My Week 8 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

The third game could only be described as the most disappointing 170 game of my life, as I almost couldn’t miss in the first five frames then couldn’t buy a spare for the rest of the game.

Result: 145-180-170=495
Average (24 games): 175
Average for last 9 games: 164
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 535

Third game was definitely winnable after my start, but then the whole team tanked, failing to avoid the sweep.

July 1 league night recap

My Week 6 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I felt I threw the ball OK tonight, but just ran out of strikes in the third game. I still missed some single pins, but that was the case in my warm-up game, too, where my only opens were missed corner pins.

Result: 187-183-156=526
Average (18 games): 181
Average for last 9 games: 173
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 563

Team took all eight, but the third game was probably not possible without a 187 from Joe, which was the best game I’ve seen him bowl.

June 22 league standings update

After winning two points from Pinheadz, Spare Us is tied for 10th with four other teams, 12 points behind the leading Team 10 and Team 15, who are two points ahead of 60 Ft. To Success and four ahead of four other teams tied for 4th. We bowl against Pin Laws Wednesday night.

June 17 league night recap

My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I was hoping for better after last week, but I was really inconsistent tonight. Probably should have made the ball change in the second game, and making the change in the third game helped me start with four strikes, but then I found myself losing my release, and that pretty much ended my scoring for the night.

Result: 148-167-186=501
Average (12 games): 183
Average for last 9 games: 185
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 562

Patrick matched my 186, which was the best game I’ve seen any of these teammates bowl, to salvage two points.

Note: I’m going to share posts on Facebook from my timeline to the blog’s new page, so that should allow me to have some content on the page before the transition is complete.

June 14 league standings update

After a sweep of all eight points against Team 8, “Spare Us” is now in a four-way tie for 11th with Team 7, Team 8, and “Has Beens”, 10 points behind “60 Ft. To Success”; that team leads Team 10 by two points and Team 15 by four points. “Pinheadz” will be our opponents Wednesday night.

June 10 league night recap

My Week 3 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

This 600 has been a while coming. I caught a few breaks, but also threw enough good shots to take advantage of the breaks, getting at least a turkey in every game.

Result: 184-211-233=628
Average (9 games): 188
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 571

I was second high on the pair tonight, but didn’t miss high on the pair by much, and because the other anchor threw a 257 at us first game. Even with that good game against us, my team won all eight.

Note: I noticed a scoring error when I got home and confirmed it with Tim at the desk, with the scorer giving me credit for eight on the fill last game when I remember only leaving the 9 on my last ball.

June 10 league standings update

After winning only two points (out of eight) to “Doesn’t Matter”, “Spare Us” is tied for 15th (out of 16 teams) with “Rack and Balls”, 12 points behind a tie for first between “60 Ft. to Success” and Team 15. Team 10 is two points behind the lead, and “Doesn’t Matter” and Team 8 (the latter being tonight’s opponents) are four behind.

2014-15 Westgate league season recap

With the Coke Classic league finally completing their season (they missed three straight weeks this winter due to the historic bad weather), I now devote my usual post to the high averages, series, and games for the men and women this season in the leagues at Westgate Lanes. Averages will be based on a minimum of 72 games in the league, and youth bowlers will be included with their gender, if applicable. Two of the highs for the men should be fairly obvious, as they were previously reported house records.

Men

Average: 237.70; Sean Richard (Thursday Night Patriots)
Series: 900; Hakim Emmanuel (Thursday Night Patriots)
Game: 300; Brian Egan, Tim Larkin (Coke Classic), Jeff Carter, Adam Johndrow, Sean Richard (His & Hers), Kevin Thibeault, John Hayes Jr. (Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen), Brian Egan (Brunswick Mixed), Mike Griffin, Bob Hamilton, Paris Cook, John Kunan, Gary Weiner (2), Ed Alfieri (Westgate Mixed), Chuck Gerlach, Bob Hamilton, John Mayo, Hakim Emmanuel (3), Danny Khuu (2) (Thursday Night Patriots), John Hayes Jr. (BBIS), Kevin Thibeault (2), Aaron Major (2), Stephen Major (Saturday Seniors), John Lawson, Mo Wideman, Sean Richard (Boston Rhythm & Bowling)

Women

Average: 207.50; Shirley Major (Thursday Night Patriots)
Series: 730; Sandi Litchfield (Westgate Mixed)
Game: 300; Sandi Litchfield (Westgate Mixed), Shirley Major (Thursday Night Patriots)

Note: Shirley Major’s average is an educated calculation based on what she told me she shot on her last night, as the standing sheets on BowlerExpress are not final sheets, for the most part. Also, I believe this is the first season that we had two women with 300 games in the same season.

Good bowling, everyone! 🙂

June 3 league standings update

“Spare Us” apparently didn’t get credit for winning the third game, as the standings on LeagueSecretary.com (linked in “Author’s links” sidebar list now) had us losing all eight to “60 Ft. To Success”, who, along with Team 6, were the teams that won all eight last week. “Doesn’t Matter” will be our opponents tonight.

May 27 league night recap (first night of Summer 2015)

My Week 1 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I liked this start better than my last winter league, certainly, second game notwithstanding. I had some tougher spares in the second game, and also had my only single-pin miss of the night in that game. I also recovered well from a first-ball gutter in the third game, closing that game with four in a row and nine on the fill.

Result: 198-140-192=530
Average (3 games): 176
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 532

My four-bagger was in a clutch situation, as the game was close, and it forced the other anchor to get the first hit in the 10th, with my team winning the points after he left a 7. Those were the only two on the night, however.

EDIT: Meant to start the post by noting that we named our team “Spare Us” after input from my teammates.

Winter 2014-15 league wrap-up and summer ramp-up

With all that was going on with state tournament, I forgot to mention that, at the banquet, and I’m not sure if this is still accurate in my memory, but my team won third high handicap series and, individually, I won second high handicap series in the men’s “A” division. I forgot which individual prize Donald won, but I definitely know Barry won third high average in men’s “B”.

For the summer, which starts tomorrow night, I’ve connected with the men from “The 508 Boys”, Mike and Patrick Doten and Joe Sullivan. I’m not sure what our name is going to be yet, but I may suggest something like “508 Plus 1”.

Live blog: 2015 Brunswick Mixed roll-off

Blogging each game of the roll-off between “Striking Gentlemen” and “Bowling Stones” as we go along:

Game 1: “Bowling Stones” won the first game 967-941 (team scores will be with handicap) after taking control in the 9th frame after all of the present “Striking Gentlemen” failed to mark. Alex Frisbie had the high game for “Bowling Stones” with a 171, while John Beliveau was high for “Striking Gentlemen” with a 176.

Game 2: This game was won by one pin by “Striking Gentlemen” 970-969 after Kevin Hart’s double in the 10th set up their finish. Kevin finished with a 154, while John Beliveau again finished high on the team with a 169. Peter Cappola was high for the “Bowling Stones” with a 197, and they still lead the match by 25 pins.

Game 3: “Bowling Stones” took control of the game in the 8th frame and didn’t look back, winning 992-931 and the match 2928-2842. Peter Cappola had a 184 and Alex Frisbie 180 to lead the winners, while Kevin Hart was high on his team with a 150 in a losing effort.

Congrats, Stones! 🙂

EDIT: As unusual, because I have it available, I’ll post the winning team’s photo here rather than wait for the banquet.

Ed Godino III throws 290 game in TNBA (with tournament note)

Congrats to Ed Godino III, who used to be in my league and whose father is still in same league, for a recent 290 game in the TNBA league. As has been mentioned, there’s been a technical problem getting standings uploaded, but we couldn’t place an exact date on this one. WTG Ed! 🙂

Deaf tournament note: Rai Doblmeier of the Tuesday scratch league let me know that he finished second to Peter Kaczmarcyk today in the Masters competition of the Eastern regional deaf tournament at Empire Lanes in Rochester, NY. Good bowling Rai! 🙂

Sean Richard bowls 832 in Patriots league, sets new Westgate record average

Sean Richard and Danny Khuu were separated by only 19 pins for 90 games in the Patriots league going into tonight, both needing a 727 series to break Jason Sherwood’s Westgate Lanes record average of 236.79 set two years ago, and the duel would take place on the same pair of lanes, 53 & 54, as their teams were matched for position round.

The first game would see Sean Richard run the first ten strikes before leaving a 4 pin for a 289, which, with Danny Khuu’s 266 left Sean just four pins ahead. A 7 pin miss in the 6th frame by Sean would lead to a 266 second game, while Danny posted the front 11 before leaving the 2-10 for a 298, leaving Danny ahead by 28 pins for the record.

Danny’s first three frames in the third game would prove to be his undoing, however, as he left the 4-6-10 split in the first frame and a 10 pin spare in the third frame, while Sean ran strikes until a 7 pin in the eighth frame, ending with a 277 for an 832 series, giving him the new record average of 237.70. Danny ended with a 225 game for a 789 series.

I’ve seen some amazing performances in my return, and Sean’s tonight would rank up there among them. He and Danny are friends off the lanes, but both competitive on them. It was good to see them both try to bring the best out of each other.

Congrats to you two on a good show tonight. 🙂

Apr. 29 league night recap

My Week 33 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I might have been able to raise my average with a better second game, but I was happy I was bowling better toward the end of the season, so I’m hoping to rebound next season.

Result: 185-139-192=516
Final average (99 games): 167
Average for last 9 games: 169

The second game was really our undoing, as none of us had a mark in the 6th and 7th frames other than what the vacants provided. Barry bowled better bookend games, as well, and those were the two points we won.

“Bowling Stones” ended up winning the second half, so they will roll off for the championship against the first half winners, “Striking Gentlemen”, next week.

Apr. 28 Coke league note

Devon McGregor posted on Facebook today that, last night, he had his first ever clean set in 31 years of bowling. I’ve been saying that 30-clean is still a feat in today’s bowling, even on a house shot, so Devon doing so on the Coke league’s more challenging conditions is rather impressive. WTG D’Von! 🙂

Winter 2015 Week 15 virtual league results (final week)

“Diamond Flush 2.0” was swept by Team 5, and fell to 7th in the final standings. There was a surprise at the top, however: Team 3 just needed to avoid being swept to win the championship, but “The Big Red One” pulled off the sweep, setting the new five-man series record in the process. Congrats to “Bavant”, “bigcall”, “Gohokies”, “ijohn83”, and “Vannman”, but I need to mention that “Chuck” was subbing for “Vannman” in the last week (“Vannman’s” league finished early), and “Bavant” couldn’t bowl because of a medical emergency and had to take his blind.

Individually, “Fin09” ended up the average leader, with 236+ for 39 games.

Youth doubles league to run Friday nights in summer

For the older youth bowlers, a Friday night doubles league will begin on June 5 and run for 12 weeks. The league will bowl four games per night on three Kegel (Recreation series) patterns (changing every four weeks) and use a modified match point system, as follows:

  • 1 point for individual game
  • 2 points for individual total
  • 2 points for team game
  • 5 points for team total

Note: The above means 25 possible points/night

Cost is $15/week for each bowler, with $7.50 going each for lineage and prizes (gift cards or sweatshirts, to be voted on).

Anyone with questions may see Stephen Major when he is at Westgate Lanes.
