The Bay State Open ran a dual event at Westgate Lanes Sunday, with their first youth singles event alongside an adult doubles event. The appropriate Facebook posts will be linked on the event type.

In theĀ adult doublesĀ event, Bill Briggs & Tina Gannon were the winners after defeating Roland Sandefur & Tom Hedding 495-469 (with handicap) in a match that saw Gannon answer Hedding’s opening six-bagger with one of her own and Briggs closing out with a turkey. Clayton Hill Jr., along with his brother Bill, cashed from Westgate Lanes besides the finalists (Clayton is a newer bowler in my Wednesday night league), and the other team was Lanes & Games’ Jennifer Dorrington and Ā John Litwin. 20 teams entered the event.
In qualifying, Briggs had games of 268, 290, and 258 for an 816 series, which Bill told me was his first 800 series, because he’s never bowled in a house shot league. Also, Sean Richard and John Litwin both had 300 games in qualifying.

The Bay State Open’s first everĀ youth singlesĀ event saw 10 entries, with Jacob Ostroff besting Eldon Dunbar 288-228 (with handicap) in the final match, with Eric Buxton finishing third. Ostroff received $240 in SMART scholarship funds for winning.
Video of both championship matches will be posted here at a later date.
While NEBA itself hasn’t announced the lane condition for next weekend’s event at Westgate Lanes, the bowling center announced inĀ a Facebook eventĀ that it will beĀ the 2007 Weber Cup Day 3 pattern, with a link to the top graph on the pattern name. If the pattern is familiar to Westgate bowlers, it’s because that was the pattern for the recently-concluded second third of the Coke league season.
Also, NEBA has recently begun streaming their championship matches live on Periscope, so it’ll pay to keep following both NEBA’s Facebook page and Twitter feed for the link to the stream; it’ll be some time after 6 PM that Sunday night.
With 14 entries in the no-tap tournament today, Jeff Carter placed first with an 820 score, Ed Veltri second with an 800, and Chuck Gerlach third with 765.

In their current newsletter, the Northeast Amateur Tournament reported that Mike Macedo became just the second back-to-back NAT champion by winning the Feb. 21 event at Westgate Lanes after winning the previous event at Strikers East. Macedo defeated Ralph Dahlgren (who is a Westgate bowler) in the final match, 298-278 (with handicap).
Besides Dahlgren, other Westgate bowlers cashing were Chris Mark, Bill Briggs, AJ Voisine, Hakim Emmanuel, and Zach Thompson. Also, congrats to Mike Antonucci, who had a 300 game during qualifying in this tournament.
The Brockton USBC BA will conduct its inaugural “BBA Madness” tournament on Apr. 10 at Westgate Lanes. The tournament poster is linkedĀ here, but the qualifying format may take some explaining, as it’s certainly different: Instead of pinfall, qualifying will be based on head-to-head wins in each game against the field, i.e. if there are 100 entries and you have the highest score in a game, that will be 99 wins. Bracketed single-elimination finals follow qualifying, and the association is advertising a $500 first prize with 64 entries.
UPDATE: I’ve scanned the full tournament rules and placed them in this PDF file.
The Brockton Bowling Association has posted the final official results and prize list onĀ their websiteĀ (PDF file), and I’ll recognize the champions below (with the individuals in parentheses for the team champions):
Handicap
Team: PUPU + 1 (Matt Richard, Chuck Paige II, AJ Voisine, Kevin Thibeault)
Doubles: Tina Gannon & Bill Briggs
Singles: Ralph Dahlgren
All-Events: Bill Briggs
Scratch
Team: Chris’ Crew (Chris Jolicoeur, Chris Carter, Mike Carter, James Burt)
Doubles: Jim Ferguson & Danny Khuu

All-Events: Jim Ferguson
The association would like to thank everyone who participated, and they hope to see you again next year. Congratulations to the cashers and champions. š

The Senior E. Mass. Bowling Association reported onĀ their websiteĀ that Mike Klosin was the winner of the February event held yesterday at Westgate Lanes, saving his best game for last in the match play round with a 284 for a total of 1,940. Jim Pritts was second with 1,844, and Don Fournier (1,841) and Greg Griebel (1,675) rounded out the top four. There were 26 entries.

The RI Ladies Classic reported onĀ their Facebook pageĀ that Tina Gannon won her second title on Feb. 27 at Alley Katz in Westerly, RI after defeating Janice Harrington 217-194 (with handicap; Tina was bowling scratch) in the title match. It was reported that Harrington needed a double to capture the title, but left a solid 7 pin.
Congrats again Tina! š

Congratulations to everyone! š
The USBC today released the lane conditions for this year’s Open Championships, being held starting next weekend at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno. As the usual service to readers, I link the pattern charts below:
Team eventĀ (38′ length, 26.7 mL total oil)
Doubles & singles events (39′ length, 27.6 mL total oil)
The reader will note that, unlike past years, the patterns are asymmetrical, being flatter on the left side than the right (Ratio for team pattern is 1.67:1 on the left, 1.7:1 on the right; minors pattern ratios are 1.73:1 on the left, 1.86:1 on the right). I believe this is being done to eliminate any advantage the lefties have.
As the USBC has also announced, starting next year, the lane conditions for the Open will not be published publicly until after the tournament’s run, so this is the last year, at least for the foreseeable future, I’ll be able to make this kind of post.

Stretching the local scope of this blog just a bit to recognize a bowler from the Brockton Bowling Association…
The New England Bowlers Association reported onĀ their Facebook pageĀ that Gary Erickson, a bowler out of North Bowl Lanes, won his first NEBA title Saturday in the BowlingSeriously.com Senior Open at East Providence Lanes. Gary was the high qualifier at +254 (five games) and dominated match play, starting with back-to-back 280 games and defeating Angelo Buttiri in the semifinals with a 247 for an 807 through three games of match play. Gary then wrapped the title up by defeating Russ Michaud 268-237.
Congrats Gary! š
The Southeastern Mass. USBC Youth Association posted onĀ their Facebook page (see photos with results) that Westgate bowlers Aaron Major (Div. 8 scratch all-events) and William Null (Div. 7 singles & scratch all-events) won titles in their association tournament the weekend before last at Holiday Lanes in Westport. Good work, guys! š
In today’s no-tap tournament, Ralph Marple won with an 816 score, Sensae-Michael Reed second with an 808, and Kevin Thibeault third with a 797. There were 15 entries.
As posted onĀ their Facebook page, the Bay State Open reported that Corey Hanson was the winner of their Feb. 7 event at Westgate Lanes, defeating John Litwin, 267-244 (with handicap) in the title match. The linked post above has video of the title match, but I’m able to embed it below:
The semifinals of this event provided what had to be, in my memory, the highest-scoring tournament match ever at Westgate Lanes, as John Litwin defeated Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Jim Ferguson with a scratch score of 300-299. The post linkedĀ hereĀ has the video of Litwin’s last strike.
Good bowling, guys! š
AJ “Big Country” Voisine picked a great spot to bowl his first ever perfect game, doing so to start his team event today in the city tournament. Sean Richard got video of AJ’s last strike, which I’ve uploaded to YouTube and post below.
Also, Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Dan Robinson came close to a 300 himself earlier in the day in the singles event, but had to settle for a 299.
Nice bowling guys! š
As my readers know, I try to post the information on the year’s state tournaments when they all become available, and I do so now:
I will post results as they become official.
Day 1 of the Brockton city tournament at Westgate Lanes didn’t see a huge scoring pace until the team event, when Chris Carter, Bill Briggs, and Jon Hester had 300 games in the first, second, and third games, respectively. Chris Carter, bowling out of North Bowl, is no stranger to success at Westgate, as he won the 2011 Brockton Bowling Association Bowler of the Year tournament here. I’d also like to specially acknowledge Bill Briggs at this time for his strong support of my social media effort, both here and on behalf of the association on our Facebook page.
Great bowling guys! š
EDIT: Zach Thompson got a video of Jon Hester’s last strike, and, with Zach’s permission, it’s below. š
I might not have mentioned it here if not for the fact that it was one of the NEBA majors, but,Ā as NEBA reportedĀ (PDF file), Danny Khuu made the semifinals of last Sunday’s Cambridge Credit Invitational at Hall of Fame Silver Lanes in E. Hartford, CT before losing to eventual champion Joe Novara. Nice showing, Khuulade! š
Due to the possible severe weather later, the RI Ladies Classic has decided to postpone today’s tournament at Westgate Lanes, and it has been rescheduled for Apr. 16. We hope for a good turnout on the new date.

The Northeast Amateur Tournament reported onĀ their Facebook pageĀ that Mark Zimmerman & Jim Ferguson, the latter of whom is a Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer, were the winners of the doubles event held on Jan. 10 at Westgate Lanes after defeating AJ Voisine & Danny Khuu, 1039-1010 (with handicap), in the two-game final match (the final match score was reported in the newsletter on their website, which was unavailable at press time). Other Westgate Lanes cashers were Chuck Paige II & Matt Richard, Mike Major & Sean Richard, Mike Peirce & Dan Robinson, Tim Major & Paris Cook, Tina Gannon & Bill Briggs, and Kevin Thibeault (with James Jordan).
During qualifying, Shawn Hartigan threw a 300 game, his second at Westgate in as many calendar years (having also thrown one during the state tournament last spring), and Jim Ferguson, during the head-to-head finals had the last 11 strikes for a 279 game after opening the game with a split.
Congrats to all! š

Congrats to all, and especially to Jeff, one of my Wednesday night teammates. š
This was missed when first posted, but here’s video of the final match of the Dec. 6 Bay State Open at Westgate Lanes, won by Hy Bao over Tim Major.
Most of my readers were “spoiled” when this was bowled, but I decided to follow the PBA’s lead and not post about this until they did.
The PBA reportedĀ that Jon Van Hees of Charlestown, RI, after building a 49-pin lead in the championship match against Jason Sterner of Covington, GA, hung on to win the Scorpion Championship 202-176 at the PBA World Series of Bowling at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, NV for his first PBA Tour title in his first TV appearance after 106 career tournaments. Van Hees won the semifinal match against Lonnie Waliczek of Wichita, KS in similar fashion after building a 24-pin lead through seven frames en route to a 209-191 final score. Speaking of his road to his first title, Van Hees said, “Iāve always been kind of a late bloomer, but if I put the time and effort into it, I can usually get to where I want to go.”
Jon first caught my attention whenĀ I noted that he was subbing in the Coke league at the time he cashed in the 2008 US Open, and have since seen him at Westgate many times, particularly when NEBA has made stops. As my final word, congrats Jon, you’ve done New England bowling proud. š
With only eight entries, Tim Major won today’s no-tap tournament with an 821 score, while Mike Peirce was runner-up with 798. Entries were likely held down by the UBA matches in Groton, CT.

The currentĀ Northeast Amateur Tournament newsletterĀ reports that Sean Richard was the winner of the Dec. 27 singles event at Walnut Hill Bowl in Woonsocket, RI, defeating Bert Santos, 411-331 (with handicap), in the two-game final match.
WTG again, Ka$h! š
The results of today’s third annual BBIS Marathon (scores are +/- 2,000 after handicap added):
There were 20 entries.
I acquired a copy of T-Brac fairly recently, and, while I’ve had issues with it for running brackets in the Coke league, it really made my life easier helping run this tournament, particularly because we ran sidepots, too, and scores only had to be entered once for both the tournament and sidepots without having to resort to anything like a second worksheet in Excel, which was how it was done before, and scores were sorted automatically, as well.
As a final note, some of the bowlers had suggestions on how we can improve things for next year, and we’re seriously considering them.
Thank you to everyone who participated today.
In today’s no-tap tournament, Brian Egan finished first with 839, Keith Kaestner second with 799, and Sean Richard third with 778. There were 15 entries, including notably my cousin Dave Randall, and two of my other cousins, Karen and Mark Haas, who were up from Texas for the holiday.

The Northeast Amateur Tournament reported onĀ their websiteĀ that Lance Mugford was the winner of the event on Dec. 5 at Westgate Lanes. Lance defeated Mark Juliano, 249-217 (with handicap) in the final match, which was reduced from the normal two games to one game due to time constraints. The Westgate bowlers who cashed were Hy Bao, Jim Ferguson, Sean Richard, John Hayes Jr., Matt Richard, and Stan Lewis.
Also, Mike Macedo had a 299 game during qualifying for this event.
Congrats to all! š
