Sean Richard shoots 300 in TNT

Although it won’t be sanctioned, Sean Richard had yet another 300 game Tuesday night in the “Tuesday Night Tournament” pot games on the Big Ben Coke shot (but it was the last week the pot games will be on that lane condition). One of the other Coke league bowlers posted a video on Facebook, but the privacy setting does not allow me to share it here.

2017 Mass. state tournament information

With my new expanded New England bowling coverage on Facebook, I’ve been posting state tournament information for the other New England states on the Facebook page, but I will always devote an actual blog post to the Massachusetts state tournaments, and I should have theĀ information for this year’s tournaments now:

  • The state open tournament will be held at Gardner Ten Pin weekends from Apr. 15-May 7 and May 13 (not May 14, which is Mother’s Day), with the entry form available onĀ the Greater Gardner association websiteĀ (but I suggest saving and printing out the images, as the entry form appears to be a set of JPEG images). In a first for the state tournament, the Greater Gardner association is accepting online payment of entry fees; look for button on the website link above. Mail-in entries close Apr. 1, but walk-in entries are accepted cash-only on the basis of lane availability.
  • The women’s tournament will be held weekends from May 6-21 at Westgate Lanes. Entry forms are available in the state’s bowling centers, and I’ve made a PDF copy available here. Entries for the tournament also close Apr. 1.
  • The youth tournament will take place Apr. 29-30 and May 6-7 at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford, with the entry form available onĀ the youth association websiteĀ (PDF format) and closing Feb. 27. Note: Westgate Lanes is already scheduled to bowl on the first weekend.

2016 Brockton Holiday Doubles team score follow-up

There was the formality of the Brockton USBC BA filing the paperwork, but, with that done, three team scores from the recent Holiday Doubles tournament now sit on the national leaderboard, theĀ 1,635 series by Brian Gaskill & Steve Dale Jr., which is currently the only qualifying series, andĀ two games, the 577 bowled by Jim Ferguson & Danny Khuu and the 553 bowled by Gaskill & Dale. For Ferguson & Khuu, it is their second consecutive year on the national leaderboard, having bowled the only 600 doubles game in the nation last season in the state tournament in N. Adams. Also, as the high doubles series in the nation last season was a 1,638, there’s every chance Gaskill & Dale hold on for the National High Score award.

2017 Brockton city tournament honor score wrap-up

I am taking care of all of the honor scores from the city tournament in this post because they all were bowled yesterday.

The first squad saw a pair of 800 series, one by Sean Richard, who had games of 269, 259, and 278 for an 806, and the other by Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Ryan Yelle, who had 266, 268, and 268 for an 802.

The lone 300 of the tournament was bowled by a bowler who made the trip from greater Boston, John Gravel, during the second squad, and Shawn Hagan’s video of the last strike is below:

Finally, on the same squad as Gravel’s 300, Rob Young had a 299 game.

I will post a link to the unofficial results on the Facebook page when I see them.

Update: Jon Hester told me tonight that he also had a 290 game in his singles event. Also, I forgot to mention that Sam Kamel converted the Big 4 (4-6-7-10) split during the second squad, which was the first time that split had ever been converted while I was in the building.

2017 Dan Hamilton Memorial Tournament results

2017-dan-hamilton-memorial

33 bowlers came out today for the inaugural Dan Hamilton Memorial Tournament, with Eric Derochers 1st with 1,068 (four games, with handicap), Sean Richard 2nd with 1,042, and Chuck Gerlach 3rd with 1,034.

I also learned a detail about Dan’s bowling career that I missed in a previous post: He was a NEBA champion, having won at age 19 at Silver Lanes in E. Hartford, CT.

The Hamilton family would like to thank everyone who came out today, whether you bowled or not.

Paris Cook wins NAT doubles at Town Line

Finalists of the Jan. 2017 Northeast Amateur Tournament handicap doubles event at Town Line Luxury Lanes (L-R): Winners Paris Cook & Mike Macedo, runners-up Sean Richard & Dave Chalifoux (Photo courtesy of NAT)

The new Northeast Amateur Tournament held its first handicap event, a doubles event, yesterday at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden, and they reportedĀ on FacebookĀ (must be logged into Facebook to view link) that Westgate bowler Paris Cook teamed with Mike Macedo to win, defeating to-be-inducted Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Sean Richard, with partner Dave Chalifoux (who has bowled in the Coke league), 460-452 (with handicap), in the final match.

2016-17 Coke league 3rd quarter lane condition

Junior has selected theĀ Kegel Big BenĀ pattern as the lane condition for the 3rd quarter of the Coke league, which starts Monday night. It is a 44′ pattern with 24.7 mL total oil at a 7.33:1 ratio. The top view graph is linked on the pattern name.

As an additional note, the flyer for the Dan Hamilton Memorial Tournament has been revised a number of times, and I’ll be updating the Google Calendar event with the latest one shortly.

Update: The Coke league pattern, as posted on the bulletin board next to the pro shop (and not the one that’s in the pro shop), is actually a modified version of Big Ben, with a ratio closer to 5:1.

Richard, Ferguson, & Zimmerman win Bay State Open trios

As reported to me by the Bay State Open, Sean Richard, Mark Zimmerman, and Jim Ferguson, all Westgate bowlers, won their first-ever trios event Sunday at East Providence Lanes by defeating John Gant, George Jones, and Calvin Scott by a score (with handicap) of 525-486 in the two game, Baker format final match. The Bay State open has posted a video of the final match, which is below.

Steve Dale Jr. wins MIST at Strikers East

According toĀ a post in the Maine Invitational Scratch Tournament’s Facebook group, Coke league bowler Steve Dale Jr. won his second MIST title, both this season, by defeating top seed John Bercier 186-171 in today’s event at Strikers East in Raymond, NH, which was the first MIST event held outside of the state of Maine. The 2015 MSBS Anvil pattern was the lane condition for the tournament, which had a MIST record 94 entries.

Update: The final match video is below.

Kevin Thibeault wins AXS title in doubles marathon

The Amateur Experience Series reported inĀ a Facebook postĀ that Scott Bourget & Billy Tessier (right two in linked photo) won their New Year’s Day Doubles Marathon at Walnut Hill Bowl in Woonsocket, RI. That wasn’t all, however, as AXS titles could also be earned by winning one of the day’s two singles sweepers, and Westgate Lanes’ Kevin Thibeault (left in linked photo) won the afternoon sweeper for his first AXS title, and believed to be the first AXS title for a Westgate bowler (Billy Tessier won the morning sweeper).

Good job, Kevin! šŸ™‚

Steve Dale Jr. & Brian Gaskill break Brockton BA doubles record

The Brockton Bowling Association held its inaugural Holiday Doubles tournament Sunday at Westgate Lanes, with the final prize list linkedĀ hereĀ (PDF file). The scratch winners, Steve Dale Jr. & Brian Gaskill, bowled sets of 866 and 769, respectively, to set what should be a new association doubles record with 1,635, just six pins short of what Gaskill found was Ed Souza & Dennis Bedard’s state doubles record, set at Holiday Lanes in Westport in the 2009-10 season.

Dale had a 300 game in his second game to go along with a 299 first game, and his 866, of course, is the second highest series ever bowled at Westgate Lanes. Other 300 games were bowled by Tom Hedding, Sean Richard, and Jim Ferguson, the latter whose was his 10th career 300. Also, according to theĀ posted final standings, Jim Ferguson & Danny Khuu, the reigning state doubles champions, posted a 279-299=578 first game, which, right now, would be good for 3rd in the nation.

As a final note, Jim Young had a wrinkle of his own for the optional “Holiday Bonus” singles event, in which the “bonus” was having the high game in doubles count twice for the derived singles event.

Update: Because this video is probably better than the one I got of Jim Ferguson’s 300 in the 2015 state tournament, here’s Tom Hedding’s video of Jim’s last shot:

Brockton BA championship tournament set for Jan. 28 & 29: The Brockton Bowling Association has also set their championship tournament for Jan. 28 & 29 at Westgate Lanes, with the entry form and rules availableĀ hereĀ (PDF file).

Sean Richard registers back-to-back No-Tap Shootout 900s

If today was the last no-tap tournament, and Junior announced today it might be for at least a while, “$eany Ka$h” is closing them out in style, as he posted a second no-tap 900 series in this one (but no jackpot to be won for the series this time). With 19 entries today, here are the five that were paid:

  1. Sean Richard 900
  2. AJ Voisine 885
  3. Brian Gaskill 880
  4. Kevin Thibeault 855
  5. Mark Zimmerman 832

If the no-tap tournaments start up again in the future, I will be sure to post.

Jimmie Pritts bests field in 2016 year-end SEMBA

As the post below will indicate, Jimmie Pritts topped a field of 23 bowlers (out of 33 eligible) in the year-end Senior E. Mass. Bowlers Association event at Westgate Lanes last Sunday with a final score of 1899 (4 games of qualifying and 4 games of match play). Jimmie earned $1,000 for the event, which, reminiscent of the 2009 National Bowling Stadium Championship on the PBA Tour, used Kegel Boardwalk on the odd lanes and Route 66 on the even lanes.

Mike Peirce wins Dec. Bay State Open at Westgate

The Bay State Open likes to have users on their Facebook page view the video to know who won each tournament, so, as the video below will show, Mike Peirce was the winner of their December event at Westgate Lanes over Kyle Egan (who will receive his 2nd place prize in his SMART account), 278-248 (with handicap). Both are bowlers at Westgate Lanes.

https://vimeo.com/195153530

As the Facebook post below shows, other Westgate bowlers cashing were Brian Egan (who lost to son Kyle in the semifinals), Jim Ferguson, Tim Woodley, and Matt Richard. The tournament had a Bay State Open record 69 entries.

Valerie Bercier wins inaugural NAT Scratch Mini-Marathon

dec-10-nat-mini-marathon-finalists

The Northeast Amateur Tournament conducted its first Scratch Mini-Marathon today at Westgate Lanes, and, as reported onĀ their Facebook page, Valerie (Calberry) Bercier, a member of Team Canada, was the winner of the final match over Danny Khuu, 237-194. Valerie was bowling well all day, as she was the high qualifier, bowling a 279 high game in the six-game block. There were 19 entries for this initial event, with Westgate bowlers Brian Egan and Ed Roberts also among the six who cashed.

The NAT’s new scratch tournaments are all going to be on challenge/sport conditions, with Kegel Tower of Pisa being today’s condition.

Ruthie Graham wins Greater Boston senior title

I’m late recognizing this, but, according toĀ the posted results, Ruthie Graham, who has long served as an officer in the His & Hers and TNBA leagues at Westgate Lanes, won the women’s division of the Greater Boston USBC BA’s senior tournament, held recently at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden. Ruthie had a 745 score with handicap in the tournament.

Congrats Ruthie! šŸ™‚

Nov. 26 No-Tap Shootout results

Sean Richard today lived up to his nickname of “$eany Ka$h”, because, as the post above indicates, he not only won today’s no-tap tournament, but hit the 900 series jackpot, worth $800. I forgot to get an entry count, but five were paid, below:

  1. Sean Richard 900
  2. Kevin Thibeault 878
  3. Rob Young 876
  4. Mark Zimmerman 866
  5. Tim Major 867

It should be noted that Seany claimed the 900 jackpot the way you originally had to do it, by bowling the last three natural strikes.

There was also a coincidence of note in the no-tap tournament today. As it turned out, the “C” bowler on lane 48 (the “Hakim” pair) had a 900 no-tap total, with the 300 games bowled by Rich Fulton, Kevin Thibeault, and Tim Major, in that order (as the bowlers moved after each game).

Amie Goodspeed wins 4th RILC title at Westgate

As the Facebook post above indicates, Amie Goodspeed (right in photo) successfully defended her Rhode Island Ladies Classic title at Westgate Lanes from last season today after defeating Shaunna Varin 194-185 (with handicap; Amie was bowling scratch) in the title match. The title was Amie’s 4th overall, with wins in three consecutive months.

Good bowling also to Westgate’s Chris Major, who was caught by Amie in the last two games of qualifying for the spot in the final match.

Nov. 12 Adult/Junior doubles results

The Adult/Junior doubles today had seven entries, so it was run as just one division. Stephen Major & Sean Richard won with a 1,428 (tournament is handicapped, but they were likely bowling scratch) and Dylan & Tim Major were second with 1,384. The bowler that struck me in the tournament today, however, was Cameron Kaestner, who had a rare conversion of the 2-8-10 split, one that, in some ways, is more difficult than the 7-10.

Good bowling everyone! šŸ™‚

2016 Mass. youth fall singles results

The Mass. USBC Youth Association has posted unofficial results of the annual fall singles tournament, which was held at Westgate Lanes Sunday, inĀ the PDF file linked here. I’ll list the presumptive champions below, with their houses and final round scores (houses were found in a post in the Junior Bowling Sport Challenge’s Facebook group; scores are with handicap except for scratch division):

100 & below: Alexis Hubert (North Bowl) 746
101-120: Dennis Goulart (Kingston Ten Pin) 799
121-140: Gabriel Wilson (Hanscom Lanes) 756
141-160: Itihaas Kommanavancha (AMF Town & Country) 805
161-180: Lexia Stolakis (AMF Auburn Lanes) 735
181 & over: Nate Clarke (North Bowl) 750
Scratch: Shane Litchfield (Westgate Lanes) 712

Congrats to all of the winners, and thank you to the Mass. youth association board and the Westgate coaches (the latter for volunteering their time for the tournament).

Steve Dale Jr. wins MIST in Brunswick, ME

steve-dale-jr-mist-yankee-lanes

As reported in their Facebook group, Coke league bowler Steve Dale Jr. won his first Maine Invitational Scratch Tournament titleĀ today at Yankee Lanes in Brunswick, ME after defeating Mike Klosin 226-193 in the final match. The tournament was contested on this year’s Danish Trios pattern.

The MIST also records video of the final match, which will be added when it’s available.

Congrats Stevie! šŸ™‚

Update: The final match is below.

No-Tap Shootout to have guaranteed 1st prize

I’ve hinted at changes coming to the no-tap tournament, and I can finally disclose them. The no-tap strike jackpot was determined to be too difficult to win. What Junior has decided is to get rid of the strike jackpot, and, instead, guarantee $300 for first place in these tournaments. It could be more, based on entries, but will now be at least $300. The $5 optional jackpot for a no-tap 900 series will remain, as there have been a couple of close approaches to it.

The first tournament with the $300 guarantee will be Nov. 19, so we hope to see you.

Al Donato, Dennis Johnson tie for Mass. state senior title

According to theĀ unofficial results of the Mass. open state senior tournament, held this past weekend at Gardner Ten Pin, the Coke league’s Al Donato was the state champion in Class C (ages 60-64). The other state champions are below:

  • Class A (ages 70 &Ā over): Terry Oullette
  • Class BĀ (ages 65-69): Bruce Durwin
  • Class D (ages 55-59): Craig Clemons
  • Class E (ages 50-54): Darryl Washington

Congrats to Al, as well as the other champions. šŸ™‚

EDIT: Rob Young alerted to me that I missed a tie for Al Donato’s division with Dennis Johnson, who is a Coke league bowler, as well. Congrats to Dennis, as well. šŸ™‚
