Oct. 26 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 8 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Tonight was a memorable night in more ways than one. Not only was it the first time I’ve had back-to-back 600s in this league since Dec. 8 & 15, 2010 (618 and 689), but it was also my first time ever that I’ve had 29 clean frames out of 30. My only “hole” was the 4th frame of the 2nd game, when I hooked past a 2-4-5 cluster and had the 5 stand out of that. This might have been 29 clean and under 600, but I struck out at the end for my 601.

Result: 197-191-213=601
Average (24 games): 181
Average for last 9 games: 197
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 568

Composite average (45 games): 182

Team won first and third games and total against one of the teams ahead of us with a position round looming next week.

2016-17 Week 7 league standings update

The updated standings after Week 7, including my virtual league team’s result:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning one point from Artie’s Angels, Lane Ducks are tied for 5th with Livin’ on a Spare, a point behind a three-way tie for the lead between Sweet Rolls, Spear the 10 Pin, and Artie’s Angels, with Solid 10 (tonight’s opponents) a half-point behind in 4th.
  • Sunday Niters: After winning four points from We Found “B”, The 3 Stooges maintained a seven point lead on that team, with Ten Is Enough 11 points behind in 3rd and Suzy’s Crew 17 points behind in 4th. Adam & Steve will be Sunday night’s opponents.
  • Virtual league: 5 Kingpins won three points (second game & total) from Team 3, and are now in 3rd place, eight points behind Big Guns, who lead AmExGoGoDub by three points, with Team 6 nine points behind the lead in 4th.

Oct. 23 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 7 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I lost most of my carry after the first game, and my problems were compounded by six corner pin misses. I made a move back on the approach after leaving ringing 10s, but my only other move to try to get carry was at the end, when I made a one board parallel move in to try to avoid the 7.

Result: 195-161-171=527
Average (21 games): 184
Average for last 9 games: 188
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 570

Composite average (42 games): 181

Team won the first two games to maintain our lead on second place, but the team could have used a couple of made single pins from me in the second game to get the two for total.

Link to Junior Bowlers Tour added to sidebar

Tom Hankey bowls a lot on the Junior Bowlers Tour, which, while they’re primarily based in the rest of the Northeast, has a division in New England (primarily houses in Connecticut). With my Facebook page’s expanded focus on bowling elsewhere in New England, the JBT is suitable for linking in the sidebar, in the “Local/New England” list. The first tournament I’ll post results for on Facebook should be today’s event at Dolr Bill’s in New Milford, CT., hopefully in the coming week.

Jim Ferguson shoots 299 at Wonder Bowl

Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer Jim Ferguson told me that, last night, while subbing on Alex Aguiar’s team in the Twilight League at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford, he had a 299 game that looked like he’d get all of the breaks, squashing the rack on high hits on the 10th and 11th shots before throwing a good 12th shot, but leaving a 10 pin. WTG still, Jimmy! 🙂

Oct. 19 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 7 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I had my best night of the season to date tonight. I really was only in trouble in the 3rd frame of the second game, when I left a washout, but I made the spare, and only missed one spare in each game (but you might point to the 7 being off-spot for that miss). It was my first 600 series in this league since Dec. 3, 2014 (646) and also my highest series since then, as my only 600 series last year was the 612 on Oct. 11, 2015 in the Sunday Niters league.

Result: 194-199-222=615
Average (21 games): 178
Average for last 9 games: 190
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 551

Composite average (39 games): 181

Our opponents all pre-bowled, and they had two good games which we were hard-pressed to top. Team did win the first game.

2016-17 Week 6 league standings update

The updated league standings after Week 6, with my virtual league team’s result; as always, I reserve the right to update this post with Sunday Niters later.

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning two points from Eileen On Me, Lane Ducks are tied for the lead with Livin’ on a Spare, with Spear Game and Artie’s Angels (tomorrow night’s opponents) tied for 3rd, a point back, Eileen On Me and Solid 10 tied for 5th, a point and a half back, and Sweet Rolls two points back in 6th.
  • Virtual league: 5 Kingpins won all seven points from The Nobodys (what I named the vacant team), and are tied for 3rd with Team 6, six points behind Big Guns, who are three points ahead of AmExGoGoDub.
  • Sunday Niters (added 10/20): After winning six points from Suzy’s Crew, The 3 Stooges lead by seven points over We Found “B” and by 15 points over Here For Beer and Ten Is Enough. Sunday is a position round, so We Found “B” will be our opponents.

Mike Peirce wins first official P&G event at Wonder Bowl

There is a new tournament series called the P&G Bowling Tour that has events scheduled at centers on the Massachusetts South Coast as well as at East Providence Lanes. After only running a sweeper last month at East Providence Lanes, they had their first official event Sunday at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford, and Mike Peirce from Westgate Lanes was the winner, defeating Dave Hebert 251-241 (with handicap) in the final match, as related to me by tournament director Mike Sedoma.

Congrats Mike! 🙂

Oct. 16 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 6 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

It’s becoming more and more apparent that taking (most of) the summer off from bowling has improved my overall game, as my composite average is currently well over last year’s. Supporting this is the fact that I’ve already bowled nine games at least 200, where I had 16 between my two leagues all of last season.

Result: 217-185-169=571
Average (18 games): 185
Average for last 9 games: 187
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 563

Composite average (36 games): 179

Peter was actually our star of the night, as he had a 716 set with a 258 first game. Team won the first two games, plus total comfortably.

Links to Youth Bowling Scholarships of America et. al added to sidebar

Busy day adding to the sidebar, and I’ll describe more about the other links added below, but no link I added today may be more important than Youth Bowling Scholarships of America, which is lining up sites like Amazon, Walmart, etc. for an affiliate marketing program to provide youth bowlers scholarships. Affiliate marketing will mean, instead of going to your favorite shopping site, you’ll click the link to the site on the YBSA page so that a small commission on everything you buy goes to YBSA, at no additional cost to you. I already support BowlingFans.com this way, so I hope the YBSA does well. Be sure to check out their Facebook page, as well. The “Bowling Sites” catch-all category is where this link will be found.

The other sites I’ve added are Genesis Bowling, makers of the K-Motion kinesiology tape, which I’ve seen Brian Egan using, and the two best-known makers of bowling ball inserts, Turbo and Vise. Those links will be in the “Other Equipment/Apparel” list.

Oct. 15 No-Tap Shootout results

With nine entries, Hy Bao was the winner with an 898 series, with only the 6-10 preventing him from claiming the 900 jackpot, and Stan Lewis was 2nd with 875. Brian Egan remarked to me that this was probably the highest-scoring no-tap tournament he’s been in, as I think he told me he had something like an 850 and didn’t cash.

Link to Apparel EFX added to sidebar

Once again, Facebook has yielded another bowling shirt maker, Apparel EFX, and the link to their website has been added (in Other Equipment/Apparel) to the sidebar. Like a lot of bowling apparel companies, they offer semi-custom shirts, where you can pick a design and color, and add your name, ball brand logos, etc. Also, for those bowlers who are also golfers, Apparel EFX offers golf shirts.

Ricky Sorn & Steven Nguyen win NAT doubles at Westgate

The Northeast Amateur Tournament site is being reworked (more on why later in the post), so I’ll have to run with this…

Finalists of the NAT doubles event on Sept. 25 at Westgate Lanes (L-R): Champions Steven Nguyen & Ricky Sorn, runners-up Sean Richard & Jim Ferguson (Photo courtesy of NAT)
Finalists of the NAT doubles event on Sept. 25 at Westgate Lanes (L-R): Champions Steven Nguyen & Ricky Sorn, runners-up Sean Richard & Jim Ferguson (Photo courtesy of NAT)

The Northeast Amateur Tournament reported on their Facebook page that Ricky Sorn & Steven Nguyen won the doubles event on Sept. 25 at Westgate Lanes over Sean Richard & Jim Ferguson. The score of the match wasn’t available, but I’ll add it when I have it. The NAT also reported that Sorn & Nguyen made the event back-to-back doubles titles for the first time in the tournament’s history. Also cashing from Westgate Lanes were “Mr. 900” Hakim Emmanuel & Keith Kaestner, and Tina Gannon & Bill Briggs (in Tina’s last tournament at Westgate before moving to Florida).

Jay Mantere announced during the tournament that the doubles event would be the last Northeast Amateur Tournament under the current format, but also that he is working with partner Jackie Van Buskirk on a new format, and that that tournament series, which may or may not keep the Northeast Amateur Tournament name, would debut in 2017. Jay will also be running a Scratch Classic Series tournament at Westgate Lanes on Dec. 10, which will be a six-game mini-marathon with top eight elimination finals. Jay has announced that Kegel Tower of Pisa will be the lane condition for that event.

Oct. 12 Brunswick Mixed recap

My Week 6 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I really saved my best bowling for the end tonight, and it was a tight third game at the end. First game should have been better, as well, as all but one ball was dead in the pocket and I missed three 10 pins.

Result: 173-175-213=561
Average (18 games): 173
Average for last 9 games: 175
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 524

Composite average (33 games): 178

My run of strikes near the end of the night was only part of a team third game win, as all five of us were over average, and we were bowling a fairly stacked team. With us winning the first game, as well, we split the points 2-2, and I couldn’t help but notice that the leaders forfeited.

2016-17 Week 5 league standings update

Updating my league standings (with virtual league result); Sunday Niters will be added later:

  • Brunswick Mixed: After winning three points from Ebony & Ivories, Lane Ducks are in 2nd place, a point behind Artie’s Angels. Sweet Rolls are two points behind the lead in 3rd, Eileen On Me (tomorrow night’s opponents) 2.5 points behind the lead in 4th, and Team 12 and Lickety Splits tied for 5th, three points behind the lead.
  • Virtual league: 5 Kingpins won five points from AmExGoGoDub, and are now in 6th, 11 points behind the leading Big Guns, who lead AmExGoGoDub by eight points, with Team 6 nine points behind in 3rd, and Ballslingers and Team 3 tied for 4th, 10 points back. Fin09, a member of Big Guns, submitted an 801 series last week, which was his league record 5th 800 series.
  • Sunday Niters (added 10/15): After winning seven points from High Rollers, The 3 Stooges hold a nine point lead over We Found “B”, 11 over Ten Is Enough, and 13 over Bowling Stones. Suzy’s Crew provides the opposition tomorrow night. All three of us made high score mention on the LeagueSecretary standing sheet for last week.

Oct. 9 Sunday Niters recap

My Week 5 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

This was definitely a night I bowled better than my score. Granted there were a few Brooklyn strikes in the run, but I hadn’t had the front seven in a while, and I was thinking a 700 might be possible midway through the second game. The 7-10 ending the night cost me my 600, but you can really point to the 10 pin in the second game and the 7 pin in the third game as doing me in.

Result: 235-189-171=595
Average (15 games): 184
Average for last 9 games: 182
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 558

Composite average (30 games): 178

My 595 was still high on the pair, and the team won seven points, tying just the second game.

Brunswick Scotch Doubles league to start Jan. 10

After the New Year, a scotch doubles league (scotch = alternate shot) will take the place of the Sportsmen league on Tuesday nights starting Jan. 10 and running for 12 weeks. Completion of the league will mean the bowler will receive a Brunswick performance ball. Cost of the league is projected to be $25/week, and details can be obtained at the desk (though I believe John Hayes will be league president).

Link to McCorvey’s Bowling World added to sidebar

McCorvey’s Bowling World (the newest entry to the growing list of online pro shops on this blog), unlike a lot of online pro shops, has brick & mortar locations in Alabama, but the fact that they do business online is why their link has been added. Of course, they have a page of deals, and purchases of “Pink Ribbon” items this month will help support breast cancer research.

This was another one that I found on Facebook, if anyone’s wondering.

Link to New England Classic added to sidebar

I learned of the New England Classic tournament at Brattleboro Bowl in Vermont over the summer, and, after finding the bowling center’s page for the tournament, waited until information was available for the next tournament, which starts next month and runs through mid-December, to add it to the “Local/New England” sidebar links list. I also linked it on the Facebook page as New England bowling news, if anyone wants to look there. 🙂

Westgate Warriors defeat New England Heat at Bowl-O-Rama

As reported to me by team sources, the Westgate Warriors bounced back from a six-point effort two weekends ago vs. Mop Nation Militia with a 30-10 effort vs. the New England Heat at Callahan’s Bowl-O-Rama in Newington, CT. I may add individual scores later, but the scratch team and one of the handicap teams swept their points in the match.

Update James Bessette commented to the Facebook post of this article with the recap (which I’ll try to include below). Brian Egan, bowling on one of the handicap teams, posted a nice 761 set to lead the Warriors.
