Oct. 30 JBSC results

Sharon Evans of the Junior Bowling Sport Challenge provided me with the stepladder results of their event yesterday at Westgate Lanes, which I scanned and provide the PDF ofย here. In the U20 division (combined boys & girls), Tom Hankey Jr. won the final match over Hunter Kempton 215-183, and Randal Dunbar won the U15 (also combined boys & girls) division over Bradley Batbutt 175-154. Stephen Major of Westgate Lanes also finished 4th in U20 and also earned his Junior Gold spot, so his youth bowling career will end in Cleveland, OH next summer. The tournament was contested on the 2016 Junior Gold U20 girls long pattern (which was not announced before the tournament).

As an aside, this was not the only time during the weekend that Tom Hankey Jr. and Hunter Kempton tangled in a title match, as they were both in the title match in the Capital District Youth Scholarship Tour event Saturday at Broadway Lanes in Ft. Edward, NY. It was Hunter winning, and I’ve shared the match video on the Facebook page.

Steve Huntress wins 2nd Brockton BA Bowler of the Year title

2016 Bowler of the Year finalists, runner-up Brian Gaskill & champion Steve Huntress

Steve Huntress became the Brockton Bowling Association’s second two-time Bowler of the Year champion after defeating top seed Brian Gaskill 290-193 in the final match. Steve ran through the stepladder by first defeating Matt Richard 235-217, then Keith Kaestner 231-188 in the semifinal. In the final match, Brian had carry problems on the right lane while Steve took it off the sheet after a spare in the first frame.

Oct. 29 No-Tap Shootout results

With seven entries in today’s no-tap tournament, Tim Major won with an 819 and Rich Fulton was 2nd with an 809. The filing of this article under “Honor Scores” is because Tim bowled a natural 300 game in the first game today. WTG Timmy! ๐Ÿ™‚

They’re going to do a few different things for the next no-tap tournament, and there could be information before it on the Westgate Facebook page, so keep checking there.

Mike Peirce wins first official P&G event at Wonder Bowl

There is a new tournament series called the P&G Bowling Tour that has events scheduled at centers on the Massachusetts South Coast as well as at East Providence Lanes. After only running a sweeper last month at East Providence Lanes, they had their first official event Sunday at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford, and Mike Peirce from Westgate Lanes was the winner, defeating Dave Hebert 251-241 (with handicap) in the final match, as related to me by tournament director Mike Sedoma.

Congrats Mike! ๐Ÿ™‚

Oct. 15 No-Tap Shootout results

With nine entries, Hy Bao was the winner with an 898 series, with only the 6-10 preventing him from claiming the 900 jackpot, and Stan Lewis was 2nd with 875. Brian Egan remarked to me that this was probably the highest-scoring no-tap tournament he’s been in, as I think he told me he had something like an 850 and didn’t cash.

Ricky Sorn & Steven Nguyen win NAT doubles at Westgate

The Northeast Amateur Tournament site is being reworked (more on why later in the post), so I’ll have to run with this…

The Northeast Amateur Tournament reported on their Facebook page that Ricky Sorn & Steven Nguyen won the doubles event on Sept. 25 at Westgate Lanes over Sean Richard & Jim Ferguson. The score of the match wasn’t available, but I’ll add it when I have it. The NAT also reported that Sorn & Nguyen made the event back-to-back doubles titles for the first time in the tournament’s history. Also cashing from Westgate Lanes were “Mr. 900” Hakim Emmanuel & Keith Kaestner, and Tina Gannon & Bill Briggs (in Tina’s last tournament at Westgate before moving to Florida).

Jay Mantere announced during the tournament that the doubles event would be the last Northeast Amateur Tournament under the current format, but also that he is working with partner Jackie Van Buskirk on a new format, and that that tournament series, which may or may not keep the Northeast Amateur Tournament name, would debut in 2017. Jay will also be running a Scratch Classic Series tournament at Westgate Lanes on Dec. 10, which will be a six-game mini-marathon with top eight elimination finals. Jay has announced that Kegel Tower of Pisa will be the lane condition for that event.

Sept. 29 No-Tap Shootout results

Junior decided to try running the no-tap after leagues last night, and I had no adequate lead-up to put it on the calendar, but he did save the results. With 10 entries, a surprise, Wayne Andrews, won with an 841, while Mark Zimmerman was 2nd with a 790.

The jackpots for the next no-tap, on Oct. 8, are $1,126 for the no-tap strike jackpot, and $760 for the 900 jackpot.

Sept. 24 No-Tap Shootout results

With eight entries, Ed Roberts was today’s winner with an 858, taking a 900 possibility to the 5th frame of Game 3, and Sean Richard was second with 835.

The jackpots are getting big, so bowlers may want to keep checking the sidebar event list for the next No-Tap Shootout and come on down if they think they can win them.

Jason Oh wins NAT at Wamesit Lanes

The Northeast Amateur Tournament posted inย their current newsletterย that Westgate bowler Jason Oh won the event on Aug. 14 at Wamesit Lanes in Tewksbury after defeating Ernie Bourque, 224-212 (with handicap), in the final match.

Jay Mantere made a post on the NAT Facebook page about his future plans, which I’ve shared on this blog’s Facebook page.

“Mr. 900” perfect in Bay State Open

“Mr. 900” Hakim Emmanuel now has six 300 games to his credit after posting one in qualifying today for the Bay State Open event. The surprise is that this one was not on lanes 47 & 48, as the Bay State Open’s video below shows:

As a personal note, this was also Hakim’s first one that I was actually there for. ๐Ÿ™‚

Congrats again Hakim! ๐Ÿ™‚

2016 Youth Open national award follow-up

I hadn’t checked it since just after they bowled it, but the national leaderboards for bothย gameย andย seriesย in youth 17-20 doubles show that Stephen & Aaron Major have the high scores from their performance in the Youth Open. Where the national deadline for reporting team scores for the season was Sept. 1, it should be all but official that they will win the national high score awards for those categories.

Congrats again guys! ๐Ÿ™‚

2016 Mass. state senior tournaments note

I may not have entry forms available for linking right now, but I do need to note that the open senior tournament will take place Oct. 29 & 30 at Gardner Ten Pin, and the women’s senior tournament on Nov. 5 & 6 at Town Line Luxury Lanes in Malden. If I get entry form links, I’ll update the post.

Open tournament entry form update: The entry form for the open senior tournament is on the Greater Gardner association website, but they chose to post the form as an image, and, although they do have a print button on the page, I don’t really recommend it; instead, save the entry form image and print it using something else (right-clicking the file and choosing “Print” in Windows File Explorer or similar should work for desktop PCs).

John Bekish wins July 2016 NAT at Westgate

July 2016 NAT finalists
Finalists of the July Northeast Amateur Tournament at Westgate Lanes (L-R): Champion John Bekish, runner-up Paris Cook (Photo courtesy of NAT)

Inย the current web newsletter, the Northeast Amateur Tournament reported John Bekish as the winner of the event held on July 24 at Westgate Lanes, defeating Paris Cook, 253-248 (with handicap) in the title match. There were 75 entries, and, along with Paris, Keith Kaestner, Chuck Paige II, and Sean Richard were the other Westgate cashers.

Coverage of NEBA to expand on Facebook

Some of you may have already seen the post on Facebook, but I’ve decided to give NEBA expanded coverage, and will do so in the manner I’ve adopted for the IBMA Facebook group, by sharing what NEBA posts about an event on Facebook, with the winner’s photo as the main post and the final match video, prize list, qualifying scores, and match play results in the comments to that post. You may want to note I’ll usually have the video up first, and the JPEGs of the other material later. While coverage of NEBA will be primarily on the Facebook page (look for the Facebook logo in the sidebar, which is clickable), I’ll still post about NEBA on the website when it’s at Westgate Lanes, and when Westgate bowlers do well in it (usually 1st or 2nd, though I may note 3rd/4th for the NEBA majors, the Cambridge Credit Invitational and the Brunswick Tournament of Champions).

Official: Stephen & Aaron Major national boys doubles champions

I got word today from Sharon Evans of the Junior Bowling Sport Challenge that Stephen & Aaron Major are now officially the national U20 boys doubles champions, but there was something else that happened involving Stephen in Indianapolis: According toย the posted final standings (PDF), he placed 7th with his grandfather, Ray Fischer, in the 12 & over boys division of the Adult/Youth Baker doubles side event.

Congrats again! ๐Ÿ™‚

Keith Kaestner, Mark Paradis shoot 300s in NAT

Striking a compromise between timeliness and my wish to not post about a tournament until I get something official from it, I’m reporting on the honor scores from Sunday’s NAT first, which were the 300 games bowled in qualifying by Keith Kaestner and Mark Paradis. Danny Khuu got video of the last strike of Keith’s game, which I share below:

Congrats to both, particularly Keith, as he bowls in my Wednesday league. I hope to have results soon. ๐Ÿ™‚

July 25 No-Tap Shootout results (with league note)

With 13 entries in the no-tap tournament last night, Sean Richard won with an 875 score, TomTom Hedding second with an 854, and Danny Khuu third with an 847.

Also, I usually don’t mention 300 games bowled in the no-tap tournament because of the nature of the tournament, but I need to note here that Jewell Wilson managed a natural 300 game in the second game. Good going!

Mike Botelho converts 7-10 split: There may not have been many great scores tonight in the league, but Mike Botelho, who I know from the Coke and Westgate Mixed leagues, did something very notable tonight by converting the 7-10 split. I knew he was shooting the split, but looked up just in time to see the second pin fall. To my memory, it was the first time I had ever seen a 7-10 converted in person. WTG Mikey! ๐Ÿ™‚

Stephen Major makes first cut at 2016 Junior Gold

Congratulations to Stephen Major, asย the USBC has reportedย that he ended his Junior Gold tournament tied for 147th place, his best Junior Gold finish to date. He endedย qualifyingย tied for 159th with a 190+ average for 16 games, then bowled -97 (five games) today to finish with a 188+ average.

If any New England bowlers reach the match play portion of Junior Gold, there will be post(s) to come.

EDIT: The advancers round standings linked has an apparent error in average calculation. I corrected the average in this post.

Aaron Major bowls 300 in Youth Open doubles

Junior Gold week has started off well for Stephen & Aaron Major, as, according toย the current standings, they are leading U20 scratch doubles with a 1,439 score at the Bowling.com Youth Open, which runs for the next three weekends at Expo Bowl in Indianapolis, IN, the Junior Gold host city. In the last game of the event, Aaron had a 300 game (Tim Major’s video of the last strike of the game is below) and Stephen added a 279.

There’s still a lot of bowling left, but most of the best youth bowlers in the nation are in Indy for Junior Gold this week, so we have some hope that the Majors’ score holds if they can get through this weekend.
