June 20 No-Tap Shootout results

Matt Richard won the no-tap shootout today with an 877 score, Tim Major second with 834, and Brian Egan third with 830. There were 14 entries.

I don’t know when the next one will be yet, but the jackpot for seven no-tap (not natural) strikes in a row in the same game is over $1,000 now, so people might want to come up for it. 🙂

Sidebar link to Bay State Games bowling added

Call this serendipity: During a check on whether the pro shop’s site still exists (it does not, sadly, so I had to remove the link), I happened to find a page on a competition that I thought had not existed for a long time, the Bay State Games tournament. This year’s Bay State Games competition took place at Greylock Bowl & Golf in North Adams in February, so, hoping the tournament is closer next year, I put a link to the info page in the sidebar under the “Local/New England” category. I also hope I can report on the Bay State Games in the future.

Links list “facelift”; link to PinPal app added

Wanting to further reduce the clutter in the “catch-all” sidebar list for general bowling sites, I created three new categories: Bowling Media (devoted to bowling media websites of a print nature; I placed the IBMA’s link there, as well), Bowling Software/Apps (devoted to bowling software and mobile apps, though some websites, like BowlSK and LeagueSecretary.com, are in there, qualifying as utility sites), and National/International organizations (devoted to bowling organizations of a national or international scope). This has probably been long overdue, but I finally convinced myself it would be useful.

One new link will be added to the “Bowling Software/Apps” list, the Google Play listing for PinPal, a popular tracking app for Android (which is what I use, but the app is also available for iOS on iTunes). If I hear of more useful (and safe) mobile apps for bowlers, I will certainly add them.

June 17 league night recap

My Week 4 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I was hoping for better after last week, but I was really inconsistent tonight. Probably should have made the ball change in the second game, and making the change in the third game helped me start with four strikes, but then I found myself losing my release, and that pretty much ended my scoring for the night.

Result: 148-167-186=501
Average (12 games): 183
Average for last 9 games: 185
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 562

Patrick matched my 186, which was the best game I’ve seen any of these teammates bowl, to salvage two points.

Note: I’m going to share posts on Facebook from my timeline to the blog’s new page, so that should allow me to have some content on the page before the transition is complete.

2015 “Summer project”

I’ve been contemplating doing this for some time, and can now announce that this blog has a Facebook page (check linked page in post), and, in the near future, everything I post to the blog will appear on the Facebook page. I had hoped to have posts appear both on my own timeline and the new page during a transition period, but I apparently can’t. Therefore, I’ll announce that the upcoming anniversary post on the 30th will be the first blog post to appear on the new page, and I’ll promote the page during the next couple of weeks.

I’m hoping that a page for the blog will not only allow for less “clutter” on my own Facebook, but also allow me to have discussion on what I post, as comments on the blog are currently not used enough. I’ll also be sharing bowling stuff that I see on Facebook on the blog’s page on occasion, so that’ll be another reason to be on the page.

Hope everyone “likes” the page. 🙂

Stephen Major wins Youth Sport Singles Challenge

Congrats to Stephen Major for winning the fourth Youth Sport Singles Challenge, held at Cove Lanes in Great Barrington, MA. The format was similar to a Masters competition at a World Championships, particularly where the lane condition is concerned, as the WTBA Paris pattern was on the left lane of a pair and Sydney on the right. Stephen defeated Andrew Hall by a score of 401-352 in the two game final match.

June 14 league standings update

After a sweep of all eight points against Team 8, “Spare Us” is now in a four-way tie for 11th with Team 7, Team 8, and “Has Beens”, 10 points behind “60 Ft. To Success”; that team leads Team 10 by two points and Team 15 by four points. “Pinheadz” will be our opponents Wednesday night.

2015 Mass. state tournament official results

The Brockton Bowling Association has posted official results on their homepage (with links to individual event results on front page), and I’ll recognize the state champions for the year below (rather than take the association of entry, I’ll try my best to determine a bowler’s home association, which will be in parentheses):

Handicap

Team: House Rats #2 (Brockton) 4,012
Doubles: Keith Tantillo & AJ Voisine (Brockton) 1,700
Singles: Pat Carrara (Brockton) 933
All-Events: Steve Travers (Brockton) 2,565

Scratch

Team: Richard’s Warrior (Brockton) 3,662
Doubles: Scott & Ken Corkhum (Greater Boston) 1,500
Singles: Tom Hedding (Brockton) 848
All-Events: Brian Boghosian (Mass. Tri-County) 2,274

I’ll also recognize the team champions individually (with the scratch champions’ lineup having been previously reported):

House Rats #2: AJ Voisine, Jay Krushas, Eric Durden, Paul Loberman, Matt Richard
Richard’s Warrior: Brian Gaskill, Jim Ferguson, Brian Egan, Bob Hamilton, Sean Richard

The final entry count was 138 teams, 374 doubles, 676 singles, and 501 all-events.

Congratulations to everyone who cashed. Thank you to everyone who participated this year, and also many thanks to Junior, Marcia, and the Westgate Lanes staff for hosting the tournament.

I do have one announcement related to the state tournament to make, but I’ll save that for a later time this month.

June 10 league night recap

My Week 3 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

This 600 has been a while coming. I caught a few breaks, but also threw enough good shots to take advantage of the breaks, getting at least a turkey in every game.

Result: 184-211-233=628
Average (9 games): 188
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 571

I was second high on the pair tonight, but didn’t miss high on the pair by much, and because the other anchor threw a 257 at us first game. Even with that good game against us, my team won all eight.

Note: I noticed a scoring error when I got home and confirmed it with Tim at the desk, with the scorer giving me credit for eight on the fill last game when I remember only leaving the 9 on my last ball.

June 10 league standings update

After winning only two points (out of eight) to “Doesn’t Matter”, “Spare Us” is tied for 15th (out of 16 teams) with “Rack and Balls”, 12 points behind a tie for first between “60 Ft. to Success” and Team 15. Team 10 is two points behind the lead, and “Doesn’t Matter” and Team 8 (the latter being tonight’s opponents) are four behind.

2014-15 Westgate league season recap

With the Coke Classic league finally completing their season (they missed three straight weeks this winter due to the historic bad weather), I now devote my usual post to the high averages, series, and games for the men and women this season in the leagues at Westgate Lanes. Averages will be based on a minimum of 72 games in the league, and youth bowlers will be included with their gender, if applicable. Two of the highs for the men should be fairly obvious, as they were previously reported house records.

Men

Average: 237.70; Sean Richard (Thursday Night Patriots)
Series: 900; Hakim Emmanuel (Thursday Night Patriots)
Game: 300; Brian Egan, Tim Larkin (Coke Classic), Jeff Carter, Adam Johndrow, Sean Richard (His & Hers), Kevin Thibeault, John Hayes Jr. (Tuesday Scratch Sportsmen), Brian Egan (Brunswick Mixed), Mike Griffin, Bob Hamilton, Paris Cook, John Kunan, Gary Weiner (2), Ed Alfieri (Westgate Mixed), Chuck Gerlach, Bob Hamilton, John Mayo, Hakim Emmanuel (3), Danny Khuu (2) (Thursday Night Patriots), John Hayes Jr. (BBIS), Kevin Thibeault (2), Aaron Major (2), Stephen Major (Saturday Seniors), John Lawson, Mo Wideman, Sean Richard (Boston Rhythm & Bowling)

Women

Average: 207.50; Shirley Major (Thursday Night Patriots)
Series: 730; Sandi Litchfield (Westgate Mixed)
Game: 300; Sandi Litchfield (Westgate Mixed), Shirley Major (Thursday Night Patriots)

Note: Shirley Major’s average is an educated calculation based on what she told me she shot on her last night, as the standing sheets on BowlerExpress are not final sheets, for the most part. Also, I believe this is the first season that we had two women with 300 games in the same season.

Good bowling, everyone! 🙂

June 6 Bay State Open Baker doubles results

The Bay State Open’s Baker doubles event, rescheduled to Westgate Lanes from another venue, was won by Jeff Havunen & Bill Sheehey when they first defeated Joe Conners & Bill Josephson 578-463 (two games, with handicap), then John Litwin & Jennifer Dorrington 437-384 (For the non-bowlers unfamiliar with the Baker doubles format, the two bowlers bowl in alternating frames for a single game rather than both bowling a complete game each.).

This is the same Bill Sheehey who I “met” on the BowlingCommunity.com forums and first met in person at a Northeast Amateur Tournament event at Westgate a couple of years ago. He has since won several tournaments in both the NAT and Bay State Open, recently becoming the latter’s Bowler of the Year by winning the season-ending event at Lanes & Games and throwing his first 300 game in the title match of that tournament in the process. For the record, congrats to Bill on his recent accomplishments. 🙂

Tina Gannon wins singles championship in TNBA national tournament

As both the scratch/actual and handicap results show, Coke league bowler Tina Gannon has won the women’s singles event in the TNBA national tournament with a 785 scratch and 816 handicap score. The doubles and singles events took place at Texas Station in North Las Vegas.

I’m not sure what the prize rule is for the TNBA tournament, but she’ll likely receive the handicap prize if the prize fund percentages favor the handicap division. Still, congrats to Tina on a great effort. 🙂

June 3 league night recap

The scoring situation from last week was clarified when it was noted I had the wrong average on the recap, as it was my Brunswick Mixed average from this year rather than last summer’s average. The change in handicap was enough to give the third game to our opponents.

My Week 2 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

Incremental improvement: This may have actually been the deepest in a series I’ve ever stayed clean, but, with better spare shooting in the third game, especially, tonight could have been better.

Result: 203-189-147=539
Average (6 games): 178
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 542

Team just won the first game; the other two games were definitely not Patrick’s fault, as he was at least ten over average in both of those games.

June 3 league standings update

“Spare Us” apparently didn’t get credit for winning the third game, as the standings on LeagueSecretary.com (linked in “Author’s links” sidebar list now) had us losing all eight to “60 Ft. To Success”, who, along with Team 6, were the teams that won all eight last week. “Doesn’t Matter” will be our opponents tonight.

Ryan Yelle wins first PBA regional title in PA

As noted in the results, Ryan Yelle of South Easton, a Brockton Bowling Association Hall of Famer, won his first PBA regional title Sunday in the Colony Park Lanes Eastern Challenge, an event for non-winners, in York, PA. Ryan qualified 6th with a +96 (seven games), eventually defeating Noel Vega of Kew Gardens, NY in the title match 220-190. The tournament was contested on the 47′ Scorpion oil pattern.

Ryan bowls at Westgate Lanes primarily in the Coke Classic league, also subbing in the Westgate Mixed league this season.

May 2015 NAT at Westgate Lanes

The Northeast Amateur Tournament held their season-ending tournament at Westgate Lanes today, with Jackson Getting defeating George Boudreau in the two-game final match by a score of 573-474 (with handicap). Westgate bowlers Jason Sherwood and Paris Cook both reached the semifinals, and Hakim Emmanuel, AJ Voisine, Sean Richard, and Danny Khuu were the other Westgate bowlers cashing.

During qualifying, Phil Hall had a 300 game, and Sean Richard a 290 game.

Congrats to all. 🙂

Westgate Warriors advance to UBA Playoffs

The Westgate Warriors, in their first season in the Underground Bowling Association, advanced to the UBA Playoffs today with a 36-4 win over Apocalypse in the NY/CT district position round at AMF Circle Lanes in East Haven, CT. Highlighting the day’s action for the Warriors were a 690 from Zach Thompson and a 688 from Charlie Unthank, both in handicap matches.

The Warriors will take on SWAT in the district semifinals on July 11 at Bowler City Lanes in Hackensack, NJ.

Summer 2015 “Author’s links” transition

For those interested in following my own bowling, I’ve begun the usual winter-to-summer transition in the “Author’s links” list by putting up links to my spreadsheet log (viewable via Google) and my BowlSK index for the league. Eventually, the league standings link(s) will also be up there. The winter links have been removed from the list, and the spreadsheet logs for that league season (including my brackets profit/loss worksheet) will be archived. Note: The spreadsheet log is less detailed (lacking such things as pair averages) for my summer league than my winter one.

May 27 league night recap (first night of Summer 2015)

My Week 1 bowling, frame-by-frame (Linked to BowlSK sheet)

I liked this start better than my last winter league, certainly, second game notwithstanding. I had some tougher spares in the second game, and also had my only single-pin miss of the night in that game. I also recovered well from a first-ball gutter in the third game, closing that game with four in a row and nine on the fill.

Result: 198-140-192=530
Average (3 games): 176
Next week’s AVG+1 score: 532

My four-bagger was in a clutch situation, as the game was close, and it forced the other anchor to get the first hit in the 10th, with my team winning the points after he left a 7. Those were the only two on the night, however.

EDIT: Meant to start the post by noting that we named our team “Spare Us” after input from my teammates.

Winter 2014-15 league wrap-up and summer ramp-up

With all that was going on with state tournament, I forgot to mention that, at the banquet, and I’m not sure if this is still accurate in my memory, but my team won third high handicap series and, individually, I won second high handicap series in the men’s “A” division. I forgot which individual prize Donald won, but I definitely know Barry won third high average in men’s “B”.

For the summer, which starts tomorrow night, I’ve connected with the men from “The 508 Boys”, Mike and Patrick Doten and Joe Sullivan. I’m not sure what our name is going to be yet, but I may suggest something like “508 Plus 1”.

2015 Mass. youth state tournament results

The Mass. USBC Youth Association has posted official results of the 50th state tournament, which concluded recently at AMF Chicopee Lanes, on their website (see separate links on front page for each event). As usual with the youth tournament, I’ll note the winners from Westgate Lanes, as a post with all of the state champions would be lengthy:

Team, 321-400 Handicap: Nasirha Andrade, Haley Demling, Anna Blyth, Joshua White
Team, 461-560 Scratch: Brandon Moore (from North Bowl), William Gerraughty, Jonathan Gerraughty, Adaisha Straughn
Team, 461-560 Handicap: Xavier Andrade, Glenn Rucker, Anthony Vieira, Christopher Zalewski
Doubles, 321-360 Scratch: Cameron Kaestner & Kyle Egan
All-Events, 161-180 Handicap: Kyle Egan
All-Events, 101-120 Scratch: Xavier Andrade
All-Events, 121-140 Scratch: William Gerraughty

Congrats to all of our bowlers who placed in the tournament. 🙂

May 23 No-Tap Shootout results

The results of today’s no-tap shootout:

  1. Rich Fulton 900
  2. Matt Richard 877
  3. Tim Major 852
  4. Stan Lewis 829

I forgot to get an entry count, but you may assume at least 20 (four prizes at 1:5 ratio). Rich told me this was the second time he’s shot a no-tap 900, and has also had an 897 no-tap series.

Congrats everyone! 🙂
